EXCERPT ONE:

“Will you be careful with the sheriff too?” Mac asked.

“Why? Dane isn’t dangerous.”

“How do you know?”

“Because he protects everyone else.”

“That’s different,” Mac argued.

“How?”

“He’s after you. Who protects you from him?” he asked, growing indignant.

“Dane’s not after me,” she teased, trying to lighten the atmosphere sparking between them.

“Right, and Bunny’s not after me.”

That restoked Cory’s ire. “It’s a free country. If Bunny’s after you, you’re welcome to her.”

“And you’re welcome to Tyler, is that it?” he growled.

No, that wasn’t it, but he’d brought up Bunny and touched off Cory’s temper all over again. The two of them were arguing like a boyfriend and girlfriend, but the gorgeous man trifling with her was a complete stranger. Almost. So why did he feel like anything but a stranger? She had no answer for that.

Distance. That’s what she needed. Time to think this through before she made another disastrous mistake. One in her life had been enough.

“Sure. Why not?” she answered him, trying to sound nonchalant. “Like I said, it’s a free—”

His lips silenced hers. The moment his mouth touched hers, she was lost in the irresistible scent and taste of him once again. He devoured her mouth as though he wanted to become part of her. No gentle kiss this.

Her hands roamed up his broad chest and caressed his hard, roughened muscles. She felt him shudder. Amazed she held the power to create such a reaction in this strong unyielding man, she fisted her hands into the curls at his nape. The low growl deep in his throat rewarded her efforts, and he crushed her tighter still, his arms banded around her back as though he intended to squeeze all thoughts of Dane from her mind.

She leaned back only enough for much-needed air, and the sensual fog retreated. Coherent thought tried to regain purchase. Enough so, she felt the need to explain her . . . desire.

“I don’t usually . . . I mean, I barely know . . .” She took a deep breath and tried again. “I’m not sure why . . .”

“I know why.” He smiled against her lips. “I feel it too.”

Dropping all pretense of playfulness to the wayside, he took her mouth hungrily, like a starving man pouncing on the chief entrée at Sunday brunch buffet.

Need, hot and hard, spiked through her, and Cory reveled in the tingles buzzing up and down her spine. Tingles she hadn’t experienced in years. Tingles she had feared no other man’s kiss would ever give her. She rejoiced in their reappearance, previously buried with long-repressed emotions, and she wrapped her arms around Mac to center herself, fearful she’d fly off into the atmosphere so charged were all her nerve endings.

Even on that fateful night on this same lakeshore so many years ago, when she’d crossed an invisible line with a different guy, she had never been kissed like this. This was a man’s kiss. A hungry man, a powerful man.

Petie spent a large part of her career working at Walt Disney World—"The Most Magical Place on Earth"—where she enjoyed working in the land of fairy tales by day and creating her own romantic fairy tales by night, including her new series, The Cinderella Romances. She eventually said good-bye to her "day" job to write her stories full-time. These days Petie spends her time writing sequels to her regency time-travel series, Lords in Time, and her cozy-mystery-with-romantic-suspense series, the Mystery Angel Romances.

EXCERPT TWO:

“The Modeling Session”

“Now, if you’ll sit on the couch and hand me your robe, we can get started.”

Walker continued in that manner, directing her in a calm, dispassionate voice. She, on the other hand, was positively humming inside, titillated beyond belief that he was fully clothed and she was completely naked. What did he think of her? He had to be comparing her to the photos of her grandmother. Was she measuring up? She shivered involuntarily.

“Would you like me to turn up the heat?” he asked.

It can’t get much hotter than this, can it? Except if maybe you were naked, too. “No, I’m warm enough,” she managed… He captured several poses and then, as he’d done with the first stone, took the camera off its stand and took a series of hand-held shots from various angles. As he moved, he’d call out a running patter of gentle commands and comments like, “Look here,” “Turn quickly,” “That’s it” and “Give me sultry.”

Reggie thought back to the facial expressions her grandmother had used as a young model and tried to emulate them. A chuckle burst out instead.

Walker lowered his camera. “What’s so funny?”

“I was trying for ‘sultry’ like grandmama, but I can’t do it. I wouldn’t know how to do it.”

He paused with his camera by his side. “You really have no idea, do you?” His voice held a touch of wonder and he murmured, almost to himself, “No idea at all.”

Strong Heroines Don’t Have to be Wonder Women….They Don’t Even Have to be Right:

We’ve come a long way from the days of reading about “damsels in distress.” Those characters (it’s hard to even call them “heroines”) were usually known for their physical beauty and even if they were “spunky,” they still relied heavily on being rescued by the hero of the tale. Let’s face it – most of us grew up on healthy doses of Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, and Belle. Even the iconic Elizabeth Bennett of Pride and Prejudice fame, intelligent and witty as she was, still had to rely on wealthy Mr. Darcy for her happy ending. Lizzie’s predicament reflected the limitations on women of the time; fortunately, those times have changed.

Today, women are free to pursue any type of career and lifestyle they desire, and that’s reflected in nearly all of the current fiction we read—at least in American culture. That’s a good thing.

But I worry that in our zeal to show all that modern women can do, we risk making their fictional counterparts caricatures of another sort: the type of ball-busting “feminist” (in the worst sense of that label) who is so strong and self-reliant that she doesn’t need anybody, much less a man, to complete her … a woman who, like her male counterpart of old, is simply too cool to make mistakes. A case in point: reports are that the next 007 will be a woman.

There’s got to be a middle ground—at least that’s what I have tried to present in The Jade Hunters. The lead female character, Regina Firestone, is a smart, talented, and successful jewelry designer, but she would be the first to tell you she hasn’t had much luck in the romance department. It actually took a relative who did some background checking to point out the fatal flaws of a man Reggie had talked herself into getting engaged to. When she realizes a crime has been committed related to her grandmother’s multi-million-dollar jewelry collection, she is hell bent on ferreting out the perpetrators, all on her own. She says she doesn’t need anybody, and she has legitimate reasons for wanting to go it alone. Her colleague, photographer Walker Banks, doesn’t buy it, however. He thinks it’s a really dangerous idea and they butt heads about it. But here’s the key: Walker doesn’t take over and make the decisions for Reggie. He doesn’t force her to do what he thinks is right. He doesn’t “rescue” her. Instead, even though he strongly disagrees with her, he chooses to support her. And she, in turn, is grateful for his support. Conversely, a subplot of the novel involves Walker’s missteps as he tries to be a real father to the son he’s seen only casually over the years. Reggie disagrees with his (at times) high-handed approach and states her case; over the course of the story he learns that she’s worth listening to.

I take this sense of balance to the physical realm by having each of them suffer from a phobia (one fears heights, the other fears close spaces) that they must deal with in order to get out of a dangerous situation. Once again, he isn’t simply saving her, nor she him; they help each other through some really frightening scenarios.

The ability to listen to another’s point of view and respectfully disagree with it … to support someone even if you don’t agree with them … to provide help when you can, and ask for help when you need it—those should be the qualities we look for in all of our modern heroes – male and female alike.

And then into her misery had come the letter.

The first letter he’d ever written her, with her name, ‘Helen Clack’, and her address in his neat sloping writing. Inside, a single sheet of writing paper. And his words, telling her how sorry he was about Dad, how much he’d liked him, that he wished he could have been at the funeral. That he hoped she was all right. That it was something, that Dad hadn’t had to suffer through a long illness, that his death had been so sudden, at home at the Parks rather than in an anonymous hospital ward.

And then the words that she’d never forget as long as she lived: I’ve been thinking a lot about you –’

Well, you and your mother. But still.

She’d carried the letter around for days. Suzanne had found her staring at it, and snatched it away and read it, and then perched on the kitchen table and said, ‘So. Have you replied?’

And when Helen had said she hadn’t, Suzanne had offered to help.

‘They don’t think like us. They don’t spend – how many days have you been mooning over this? – six days analysing and pulling apart and putting back together every little thing we say. You have to treat them like they’re simpler forms of life. Stimulus–response.’

‘Hector’s not a “simpler form of life”. That’s the whole problem.’

Falling in Love with the Main Characters:

I love to fall in love... Doesn’t everyone? And the great thing about fictional crushes is that they are guilt-free – you can be a real hussy and fall in love half a dozen times a week!

I’m not going to talk here about ‘falling in love’ with a character as in empathising with them and relating to what they’re experiencing, although of course that’s crucial. (I hope readers will have that sort of love for Helen, the only character in The Sweetest Poison whose head we get to be inside.) No, I’m talking about having an all-out crush on a character.

I write mysteries, not romances, but one of my main goals with the Pitfourie Series was to create a charismatic, edgy, somewhat enigmatic character with whom the reader can fall in love. I ended up with two of them: two aristocratic brothers, Hector and Damian Forbes, who are quite different but both embody the traits I personally find are necessary for a good-going crush.

They’re both intelligent. That’s a must. They both have a dark side. They’re both irritatingly capable and strong-minded. (All the best heroes are irritating.) They value their privacy, so the reader gets to know them only slowly over the course of the series. Most of all, they have what I can only call ‘spark’: a sharp wit, a redeeming sense of humour, a well-developed sense of the ridiculous.

Here’s a short extract from The Sweetest Poison showing Hector at his worst. He’s just beaten up a couple of villains and chucked them into the back of a van. Helen is freaking out about the casual way he used violence against them.

‘You’re not taking them to the police?’

He raised his eyebrows.

‘Hector –’

‘The police... All right, yes, we could take them to the police. But to what purpose? This way, their assets are seized, they’re, um, disincentivised... and all at no cost to the taxpayer.’

‘How can you – It’s not funny. They could have killed you. Or you might have killed them.’

‘Could try harder?’ His hand was back on her arm. ‘It’s okay. I’m sorry you had to see it. Shh. It’s okay.’

He pulled her against him, and she breathed the familiar clean, sharp smell of his shirt, his skin. She put her hands on his back; felt the slight movement of his ribs as he breathed. He wasn’t gulping air like she was; he was breathing perfectly normally.

He wasn’t sorry about what had happened. He was sorry she’d had to see it.

Reading this extract has reminded me that characters like Hector somehow take on a life of their own, as if they really are real and you’re not quite in control of them! I’m shaking my head in despair and reflecting that Hector can be quite a bastard. I call him ‘dubiously charismatic’ in my blurb, and I think, for me, that pretty much sums up the characteristics of a ‘crush-able’ hero. I hope that my readers will feel the same way, and maybe enjoy a little harmless love affair...

EXCERPT TWO:

“You must need glasses.”

He lowered his drink and tapped the bow of his frame. “Got them on. The eye doctor says I’m twenty-twenty now.”

“I must carry all my weight in the part you didn’t see then.”

He laughed.

It was naughty.

It was sex in the afternoon.

It was making out in the dark.

It was 69 on the bed at six a.m.

“Oh, but I saw it all.”

I shook those thoughts away in order to stay sharp as we sparred. “I’m three-dimensional, last time I checked.” I took a long swallow of the spiked pop and waited.

“Most definitely,” he agreed, leaning on the small island in the kitchen. “The last time I checked, you had a mirror on the dresser in that room at the end of the hall.”

I thought about what he said in the context of that night. My chin fell slowly to my chest. “You were checking out my ass in the mirror? When I was giving you a full frontal?”

He tipped his head and lowered his glass, the ice cubes clinking against the side. “Not to worry, I took in the full frontal, every last inch of it, actually. But, truth be told, nothing excites me more than a nice ass.”

“Me too, but the one I’m looking at isn’t doing it for me.”
