Crossed Fire
by Kim Baccellia

GENRE: YA Paranormal

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Stephanie Stewart is a typical sixteen-year-old girl—she loves hanging out with her friends, going to concerts, and sipping mocha lattes. Yup. Just your average teenager . . . Except for one difference—she can see and talk to the dead. In fact, Stephanie helps dead girls who who’ve been murdered or killed, cross over. Just as Stephanie is getting used to her unique “gift”, her mom stumbles into some dangerous witchcraft that backfires and triggers similar abilities in Stephanie’s best friend Cura, and nemesis Hillary. Stephanie already has enough trouble trying to maintain a “normal” life between school and her cute boyfriend Dylan, who happens to have a supernatural talent all his own. But now she has to help her friend Cura and her “frenemy” Hillary cope with their new-found powers as well as cross over two murdered cheerleaders and battle an evil demon who wants to use Stephanie’s supernatural strengths as a free pass to The Other Side. And she needs to do it all while still getting her term papers in on time. She’s definitely going to need an extra-large mocha latte for this.
EXCERPT TWO:
A sudden breeze picked up the trash and leaves that were strewn about, making them dance over the patchwork of dirt and grass. And then I felt it. The itch on the back of my legs that warned me a dead girl was approaching.
A flash of intense light erupted across the darkened sky. Dylan pressed the cold water bottle to his forehead, probably to soothe his headache. Under his breath I heard him mumble about a freaky aura.
At first I couldn’t make her out, but little by little she materialized out of the fog. She looked older than me, maybe college age?
“Is that the girl?” I asked Dr. Anthony. Sure, he’d shown me a newspaper photo, but seeing the ghost in front of your eyes was always different from seeing a picture of someone when they were alive.
“Yes,” he said. “Her name is Morgan. Morgan Waters.”
Although I hadn’t had a vision of her death the strong impression of daisies resurfaced. I swear I could smell the sweet, fresh scent.
Morgan made her way over to us in a weird sort of half-floating-half-walking way, crossing the Sacramento River. Moonlight shone all around, lighting up the freeway behind her.
The water bottle fell from Dylan’s grasp, but he made no effort to pick it up. He stared at the spirt, and then rubbed his eyes.
REVIEW:
This book was a fun, interesting, intriguing, adventurous read!
This book really reminded me of TV Shows, “Tru Calling” and “Medium.”  As Stephanie can see and talk to the dead and helps them cross over like Tru does in Tru Calling and Allison does in Medium.
I really liked the main and supporting characters, Stephanie, Dylan, Cura, Hillary, and Dr. A.  They all played well off each other and kept the story entertaining.
I liked the teen drama and angst that played throughout the book.  No matter where you live or what school you’re at you’re bound to find cliques and the school hierarchy pyramid.  This was absolutely true here, with Hillary calling the shots and making sure everyone knew she was the Queen B.  This was even more fun when certain things happen to Hillary and scores get even – but no spoiler alerts here lol.
There is a lot of drama in this book!  Whether it is between Stephanie and her frenemy, Hillary; Stephanie and her boyfriend, Dylan; Stephanie and her BFF, Cura; or Stephanie and her mom – Stephanie seems to have a bit of a case of teenage irritability lol.  Stephanie also tends to be a tad reckless in her decisions and tactics.  I’m not sure if it’s due to her age or the fact that she goes out of her way to not ask for help, but she makes some risky calls that clearly show her negligence and ignorance and land her in some hot water.  Clearly a YA book, with all the drama between BFs, BFFs, frenemies, and parentals.  Not to mention the indestructible/invincible feeling that many teenagers feel by taking daring chances, not realizing the consequences or dangers lurking.
I found it interesting how all the teen’s gifts each brought something to the table and am excited to hopefully see future books in this series of them all working together.
The writing style is fluid, well developed, and at a steady pace.
The storyline is quite creative and imaginative – and it totally works!  I think the character’s personalities and the fact that they act like real teenagers really sells it.
This book is written from Stephanie’s POV.  I liked that this book is written in a light hearted, funny, sometimes sarcastic tone – hence teenager POV lol.  It gives humor to the story and the characters.  Even during some of the more serious, wild, dark, gruesome scenes; the writing continues to be on the lighter side.
This book is the second book in the Crossed Book Series.  I had not read the first book before reading this book.  I did not get lost or confused, so this book can be read as a standalone.  However, there are many references to the previous book and the characters seem to overlap.  However, since I liked this book, I would suggest getting in from the beginning and starting with book one, so you don’t miss anything.
All in all, I enjoyed reading this book and would absolutely recommend this book to anyone interested in a YA paranormal book.
Cloaked
by Taylor Hobbs
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Historical Fantasy Romance

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
As the Cloaked Shadow, Fawkes has made his career breaking into prisons for any contract with a large enough purse. He takes advantage of the kingdom's impending revolution by playing both sides of the conflict. Each rescue contract he fulfills turns a tidy profit until he angers the wrong duke.
Charlotte is a criminal-in-training who yearns to crack her mentor’s guarded façade, but is unprepared to confront the depths of his dark past. As her sense of right and wrong blurs, Charlotte discovers just how far she will go for the Cloaked Shadow and the sacrifices he requires.
Now hunted throughout the land, Fawkes must face long-buried secrets in order to survive, but they could destroy him. Charlotte risks everything, including her heart, to set Fawkes on the path to redemption.
Will Charlotte have the strength to pull Fawkes into the light, or will she follow him into the shadows?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT TWO:

Fawkes’ attack pressed Charlotte backward, and soon they were outside. As Charlotte’s feet slipped in the mud, she realized she had lost her size advantage. Lightning cracked across the sky, illuminating her surroundings long enough to blind her, and she failed to anticipate the next punch. It landed hard on her right shoulder and spun her around.

Before she could steady herself to counter, her arm was wrenched behind her back. Fawkes had a grip on it with one hand, the other around her throat. She stood flush against him, feeling his harsh breath and pounding heart as it beat against her back. They stood like statues, neither one of them wanting to the first to break the spell.

The roar of thunder made her jump and brought them back to reality. “I’ve gotten better, haven’t I?” Charlotte couldn’t help asking. She’d meant it as a quip, but it came out too hopeful.

She felt Fawkes sigh, tensing his hold on her before dropping his grip. With her back still to him, she waited for his answer. Instead, his hand brushed wet hair back from her face before a finger traveled down and traced her jawline. Charlotte leaned into the touch, but then it was gone. She turned to see only darkness, and then a flash of lightning showed his tall frame heading back to the cave.

GUEST POST:

Five Reasons You Should Read My Book

1.     Secret identities. The classic way to make a studly hero with a tragic past even more captivating and swoon-worthy. Even more walls for our heroine, Charlotte, to tear down. Plus, lots of lawbreaking can occur, which is tons of fun.

2.     A training montage. This may have resulted from watching too many 80s movies, but who doesn't love a montage scene? Read Cloaked to see how Charlotte transforms herself into a woman who kicks some serious butt.

3.     A sidekick animal. Confession: I am not a horse person, I am a dog person. But if there was ever a horse that I wouldn't be terrified to ride, it would be Ghost. He is loyal, sturdy, and smart, and will melt the hearts of animal lovers everywhere.

4.     To figure out what is on the cover. Is it a bird? A bomb? Someone's head exploding in the crown? It is all open for interpretation, but once you read the book, your best guess is probably right.

5.     My mom and dad give it a gold star. If you ask them, they swear Cloaked will hit the New York Times Bestseller List and movie producers will be knocking down my door. Take their opinion with a grain of salt, though, because these are the same parents who put smiley faces in the margins next to parts of the book they liked. If you would like to contribute a less biased review, I would be forever grateful for readers willing to take a chance on a debut author.

Thank you for having me!

EXCERPT TWO:

The rebels came out of hiding and stalked toward the good guys.

But fifty feet behind them, rolled black cleaning bots in a solid phalanx from one side of the lane to the other. More were emerging from doors to fall in behind the first line.

Tal’s chest felt light. His fists clenched and unclenched rapidly. This was more cleaning bots than had ever been assembled. “Hurry up,” he said to his army even though they couldn’t hear him. “Faster.”

The line rolled toward the rebels’ rear, charging like phalanx of vengeful cockroaches determined to advance no matter what stood in their way.

Maybe because of the gunshots, the rebels didn’t hear the miniature army. Two guys and a woman in the rear yelped when bots hit their feet. Dropping their weapons, the men fell backward; there were so many bots that they carried them and their guns along for a bumpy, jarring ride. The woman was faster. She dashed into a nearby house—but came right back out again, pushed by a battalion of cleaning machines.

Scores of bots flooded into the lane, driving rebels out of buildings and into the churning flood of small metal soldiers. Some tried to crawl over the flood, but they found nothing stable enough to walk on. They fell and bots crawled over them. A rebel emptied his pistol at the swarm, but for every one he shot, another took its place.

One young rebel, smarter than the rest, rode atop the bots without struggling. At an intersection he rolled once, twice, three times until he reached the edge of the swarm. Then he popped to his feet. His escape didn’t matter, though: he left his gun and ran.
