A Hundred Promises of Love
by Aidee Ladnier

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Contemporary, Holiday
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

For Ethan and Nico, a broken millefiori ornament is more than a few shards of glass−it’s a chance at finding love at Christmas.

Ethan Carson wants to treat his mother to the perfect Christmas while she’s visiting over the holidays. He’s spent all his savings on presents and bought an enormous tree that takes up half his living room. But when he starts to trim the tree with the family heirloom decorations, he finds her favorite ornament, the one his late father bought on their honeymoon, is broken.

Glassblower Nico Kazan doesn’t celebrate Christmas—unless you count trying to sell the art glass in his gallery to holiday shoppers. When Ethan, the object of his secret crush, asks him to recreate a broken Murano ball, he knows it will take more than his skill and time. Can he risk his heart to give Ethan back a symbol of love and family for Christmas?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT ONE:
On the Christmas card, two fluffy Persian cats sporting felt antlers stared at Ethan in disgust. Behind them a miniature sleigh sat empty. A thought balloon rose above one cat with the words, “Pull your own sleigh, fat man.” Ha. Ethan tried to smother the chuckle, but it escaped.
“Are you laughing at your Cousin Emmylou’s lumbago?”  His mom’s disapproving question snapped Ethan back to the conversation on his phone. He shoved the card back in the rack and lined them up from where the last customer picked through them.
“What? No. What is lumbago, anyway?” His Cousin Emmylou always had some ailment discussed ad nauseam by the family. A pang of regret thrummed in his chest as Ethan realized he wouldn’t see Cousin Emmylou or any of the extended family this Christmas.
At least his mom would be here to celebrate.
“It’s a three-dollar word for back pain.” Ethan’s mom sighed. “Last month it was impetigo. I swear that woman is a walking health hazard.”
“Well, you’ll get a week off from Cousin Emmylou. I’m looking forward to your visit, Mom.” And he was. His mom traveled little, and he wanted to pamper her this Christmas. He’d spent his cash, extra savings, and maxed out his puny credit card to buy spa day gift certificates, theatre tickets, and a special weekend stay at the Opryland hotel.  He’d even sprung for passes to see his mom’s favorite performer in concert. He’d need to watch his budget through January to make sure he didn’t overdraw his checking account, but she deserved it. Christmas was always hard, now that Dad had passed. And with her move out of the family home this year... He wanted her new memories to be just as special.
“I can’t wait to spend quality time with my baby boy again.”
“Well, it will be a whole new experience to see Nashville at Christmas. Don’t forget to bring a warm coat.”
His mom’s laughter sparkled through the phone’s speaker. “No shorts for Christmas?”
“I’m hoping for snow.” Ethan chuckled at his mom’s exaggerated “brrr” noise in response.
“There’s something else I—” She began but movement beyond the coffee shop’s plate glass window caught his eye.
Ethan recognized the tall, delicious figure in purple lens sunglasses striding toward him. He interrupted her mid-sentence. “Oops. Gotta go, Mom. Love you.”
“Love you too, baby boy.”
Ethan rammed the phone back in his pocket and ducked behind the counter a minute before the bell over the door jingled.
One Too
by Sherrie Cronin
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Sci-fi/Fantasy

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Telepathy creates as many problems as it solves, as most of the members of the secret organization x0 would admit. When new member Lola discovers another group of telepaths with a completely different approach, those problems multiply at the speed of thought.
Soon, Lola’s family and friends are in danger. Lucky for her, she’s not your average budding psychic. Each person with whom she is close has a special gift of their own. That’s good, because it’s going to take every power they possess to keep this other group from succeeding with their plan to eradicate x0.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT:

The invitation for this TV appearance had been presented to her as chance to explain her views and defend her ideas against these attackers. Yet now that she was in New York about to go on air, every instinct was telling her this was a huge mistake.

She looked off stage at the well dressed, tall Latina with shiny, long, black hair who had greeted her and appeared to be the producer of this segment. In spite of an otherwise strong, almost regal, body, the woman walked with a cane. A small amount of underlying pain was evident in her eyes. The rest of her mind was a gauzy grey of unreadableness. Very odd.

Lola’s misgivings were so strong that she considered simply walking back off the stage, perhaps feigning sudden illness. But then the words “on in five” blared, and the chirpy host she had met briefly a few minutes ago walked to his seat. The next thing Lola knew, he was saying, “Meet today’s guest, Lola Zeitman, a quiet geophysicist from Houston who has stirred some people up with her little article called ‘Face Painting for World Peace.’”

As he said the words, Lola was finally able to pick up a clear thought from him. Unfortunately, the thought was that this interview had no other purpose but to make her look like an absolute dimwit.

Telepathy is not always as useful as you’d think, she thought. Do your best to make it through this with your dignity intact.

AUTHOR BIO:

Sherrie grew up in Western Kansas thinking that there was no place in the universe more fascinating than outer space. After her mother vetoed astronaut as a career ambition, she went on to study journalism and physics in hopes of becoming a science writer.

She published her first science fiction short story long ago, and then waited a lot of tables while she looked for inspiration for the next story. When it finally came, it declared to her that it had to be whole book, nothing less. One night, while digesting this disturbing piece of news, she drank way too many shots of ouzo with her boyfriend. She woke up thirty-one years later demanding to know what was going on.

The boyfriend, who she had apparently long since married, asked her to calm down and explained that in a fit of practicality she had gone back to school and gotten a degree in geophysics and had spent the last 28 years interpreting seismic data in the oil industry. The good news, according to Mr. Cronin, was that she had found it at least mildly entertaining and ridiculously well-paying. The bad news was that the two of them had still managed to spend almost all of the money.

Apparently she was now Mrs. Cronin, and the further good news was that they had produced three wonderful children whom they loved dearly, even though to be honest that is where a lot of the money had gone. Even better news was that Mr. Cronin turned out to be a warm-hearted, encouraging sort who was happy to see her awake and ready to write. "It's about time," were his exact words.

Sherrie Cronin discovered that over the ensuing decades Sally Ride had already managed to become the first woman in space and apparently had done a fine job of it. No one, however, had written the book that had been in Sherrie's head for decades. The only problem was, the book informed her sternly that it had now grown into a six book collection. Sherrie decided that she better start writing it before it got any longer. She's been wide awake ever since, and writing away.

Birthday Presents
by Dianne Hartsock

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: M/M Erotic Romance, Crime Drama
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

For Tracey, life has become a nightmare. Kidnapped from a nightclub in Boulder, Colorado, brutalized and raped by the killer known as Crimson, he's held captive alongside Kyle, a young man Crimson keeps chained to his bed and is slowly torturing to death. Though Tracey manages to escape with Kyle's help, he is forced to leave Kyle behind.

Gene has never stopped looking for his brother Kyle, abducted from a nightclub seven months previously. The case breaks open when Tracey comes forward, claiming to have knowledge of the whereabouts of Crimson's hideout.

A manhunt begins, but Crimson's birthday has come and gone, and he will kill again.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT TWO:
Gene knuckled his tired eyes and yawned audibly in the large room crammed with desks and files and very few detectives. No one came in on a Sunday unless absolutely necessary, or in his case, unable to stay away. His gaze wandered again to the closed door of the office on the far end of the room. Craig was in there with the rest of the Target Crime Team. He'd gotten a call a short time ago saying an eyewitness over in Pine Bluff had seen Kyle alive no less than two days ago. God.
Hope trembled in Gene's chest despite Craig's cautionary words that Kyle hadn't been found yet. But this was the closest they'd come since Kyle's disappearance last November. And Gene had the bastard's knife. Hopefully forensics could get something off it, fingerprints or a serial number, anything to link it to a name so they could track him.
He rubbed the back of his neck. Craig had been furious with him when he found out Gene had been prowling nightclubs again. But what was he to do? No one else was looking for Kyle. Craig claimed Gene jeopardized his investigation. Fuck that. Kyle was his brother and he wasn't about to give up on him. And Gene was careful, only going on his nights off. If he happened to stumble on the kidnapper…
The front entrance thumped open and he glanced in that direction, then dropped his gaze to the papers on his desk, scowling. Just what he needed… A low whistle from one of the detectives walking in made his blood boil.
GUEST POST:
Who Inspired Your Love for Books?
My love for reading and writing books comes from many sources, beginning when I was as young as four or five years old. My sister Sharon used to read bedtime stories to us, or make up wonderful tales of her own. I’d sit spellbound while she wove tales of elves and wizards and goblins and encouraged us to make up stories of our own as well.
Once I learned to read and write, I started writing down my stories. I remember once in first grade my teacher pinned the story I’d written about an elephant at the zoo to the board. Oh gosh! My story was there for everyone to read. I loved it! And have never gotten over the thrill of having a story out there for strangers as well as friends to enjoy.
I fell in love with reading when I was twelve, devouring everything by Ray Bradbury, my favorite author, by the way! I adored Louisa May Alcott and Gene Stratton-Porter and the Bronte sisters. I’m still a romantic sap! And of course the epic fantasy Lord of the Rings. Frodo ran away with my heart. I’m still a voracious reader, squeezing in time every day for my favorite authors.
In seventh grade I had a terrific creative writing teacher. I think she was pivotal in my writing career. She seemed to love my stories and encouraged me to submit a story to the local newspaper who was running a writing contest. I won! There was my story printed in the paper for everyone to see. I was hooked! It fueled my passion and need to have my stories published and out there in the world.
I wrote and submitted stories from then on. Yep. I had an electric typewriter and liquid whiteout and got to work, mailing off chapters and waiting months to half a year for a reply. I have a stack of rejection letters you wouldn’t believe.
But six years ago my first novel was published. Yay! That really jumpstarted my writing career and with each acceptance I’m more and more inspired to keep writing. Nowadays I split my time between my day job and writing and reading and my family/friends. Sometimes there doesn’t seem to be enough time in the day to do all I want, but I have a great life and wouldn’t have it any other way.
Dianne is the author of paranormal/suspense, fantasy adventure, m/m romance, the occasional thriller, and anything else that comes to mind. She lives in the beautiful Willamette Valley of Oregon with her incredibly patient husband, who puts up with the endless hours she spends hunched over the keyboard letting her characters play. She says Oregon’s raindrops are the perfect setting in which to write. There’s something about being cooped up in the house with a fire crackling on the hearth and a cup of hot coffee warming her hands, which kindles her imagination.
Currently, Dianne works as a floral designer in a locally-owned gift shop. Which is the perfect job for her. When not writing, she can express herself through the rich colors and textures of flowers and foliage.
You Taste Like Whiskey and Sunshine
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Non-Fiction/Memoir

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
There's an evil queen, a demented father, some amateur boxing and a trailer park story. Even a silver fox makes an appearance. Why wouldn't that entice you?
If you are looking for something different from the rest of the books out there, something that might make you question your sanity then you will love this book.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT ONE:

Mom? Are you reading this? Maybe you should have a drink first. Can we get a rum and coke over here? She’s gonna need it...

A lot of people have asked me throughout this process, why I would want to write this book. There are a few reasons why I decided to completely expose myself for the world to see, but certainly one particular moment comes to mind. During a heated argument with my ex-husband, post-divorce, he blurted out that he thought I was incapable of loving another human being. It’s one of those things you hear that is so shocking to you that the argument just ceases. I was speechless, I didn’t know what to say. Normally I would have chalked it up to the fact that he was in fact a disgruntled ex because it wouldn’t be the first time we got down and dirty in an argument, but this time I didn’t. I never forgot that comment, mainly because I wondered for years if it was true. There was just something about the way he said it that made me wonder if I was really that irrevocably screwed up. So, I decided to delve into my past, for my sake as well as my daughters, to find out why I walked out on a relationship that everyone thought was perfect.

GUEST POST:

Who Inspired Your Love for Books?

My mother inspired my love for books, she was always reading and that’s something we saw when we were growing up. I started reading adult books while I was still in middle school because I started reading from a young age, and my taste in books went beyond what was available for middle-grade books, especially some 20 years ago.

She definitely gave me a love of reading because she loved it so much and encouraged us to read. I had a very troubling childhood due to abuse from another family member, so I often looked for a place to hide. Books were a means of escape for me and I’ve often heard other people say the same thing. As a child, you can often feel trapped in your world and books can offer you a different world to step into where you can be awesome and not have to worry about what is going on back home. I was able to heal my own heart through books and I’m so happy that I was one of those people that were raised on books.

From there I moved into creating my own stories and I was able to create things that I hope other people will use to make their lives happier as well. It’s an easy transition from a reader to a writer. It was for me anyway. Now, I’ve passed on my love of reading to my own daughter and I smile when I see her curled up in bed with her own favorite books.
