BLURBS:

Spy for a Dead Empire
(Adventures of Grant Scotland, Book One)

AELFA, THE GRAND CAPITAL of the once mighty Aelfan Empire, has fallen. Barbarian war parties and nomadic tribes harass the retreating and broken legions that once overawed them. All that stands against them now is the city of Zyren, the last bastion of Aelfan rule.

Acting as a spy for Zyren is Grant Scotland, a man leading a double life because his own had been taken away from him by the very people he serves. An unwilling recruit into the business of clandestine missions and deceit, he searches for anything real to cling to as the world around him devolves into insanity. And when an old friend shows up asking him to help save his family by delivering a mysterious book to a shadowy figure, Grant's two lives collide and he is thrust into an even stranger world than he had known; one where ancient magic is wielded by deadly players who compete against one another for a prize greater than simply the rotting carcass of a dead empire.

Spy for a Troubled King
(Adventures of Grant Scotland, Book Two)

AMONG THE ASHES of the mighty Aelfan Empire, the House of Gregyan seeks to forge a new kingdom—one where both Huthan and Aelfan alike can prosper. But old prejudices and ancient traditions and an exiled enemy threaten the peace. Caught between compassion for his home and allegiance to his fallen empire, Grant Scotland finds himself trapped in the turbulent machinations of enemies and friends. As he works to uncover mysteries about his father’s treachery and confront new threats to his future, he moves perilously close to revealing his identity and losing everything.

Spy for a Wayward Daughter
(Adventures of Grant Scotland, Book Three)

AS THE GREGYANS MARCH TO WAR and his handler takes a trip to Zyren, Grant Scotland, spy errant of the Aelfan Empire, gets ready to pursue a lead on finding a man who might be able to tell him the truth about his father's treason. Old friends, new enemies and hidden dangers soon confront him on his quest, but when he enters the dark world of another family's intrigue, he finds that not even the frontiers of the Aelfan Empire are far enough away to escape the dangers of fortune and fate.

The Unlikely Spy
(Adventures of Grant Scotland, Volume One)

The Adventures of Grant Scotland series is an entertaining mix of fantasy, mystery and espionage featuring a hero whose many faults provide almost as much challenge to him as the formidable obstacles he must face as he attempts to impose sanity upon a world rapidly descending into chaos. Collected in this volume are the first three books in the series: Spy for a Dead Empire, Spy for a Troubled King and Spy for a Wayward Daughter.

Spy for a Greedy Villain
(Adventures of Grant Scotland, Book Four)

RACIAL TENSIONS IN AELFA simmer and threaten to boil over when the harbormaster is found dead and the Huthan oppressors threaten to crack down in the Lower Docks. As Grant Scotland finds more questions than answers in the journals of Berthul Magnussen about his father’s treachery, he is drawn into a murder investigation, a kidnapping plot and the nefarious machinations of the city’s biggest crime lord—Mr. Quinn. In order to stop Quinn’s plans and save the city from being thrown into open revolt, Grant prepares to take his biggest gamble yet.

EXCERPT FOUR:

Spy for a Greedy Villain
(Adventures of Grant Scotland, Book Four)

I gave him a brief recap of my espionage activities over the past few months, which included reports on the growth and temperament of the One God followers, the coming and going of any Huthan notables and the operations of Doogan and Quinn. At last I followed up with a summary of the harbormaster investigation and finished with the discovery of a ghost in the Lower Docks.

“There’s no such things as ghosts, Scotland.”

“I know, but I haven’t worked up a better nickname for him yet.”

“I’m sure you’ll think of something. I have every confidence in your ability to accomplish inane tasks of trivial importance.”

“Everybody has to be good at something.”

“And while your limited mental capabilities will no doubt be severely taxed in that endeavor, I’ll do some checking into what could make a man entirely concealed in plain sight.”

“You mean invisible. You can just say invisible.”

“Were I interested in being as lacking in attention to details as you, I could use the word invisible, but luckily for the both of us I am not. Complete invisibility is impossible. Not even the greatest Aelfan wizards were ever able to accomplish such a feat. But, there are several ways a man can remain unnoticed. Take me for instance. For the eleventh time in a row you failed to spot me before I spotted you.”

“How am I not surprised you’ve been keeping score? At any rate, he didn’t sneak up on me, I’m telling you I looked right through him.”

“Except his boots. Unless in addition to invisibility you also believe in the existence of a sentient pair of boots?”

GUEST POST:

Regarding Grant Scotland

First let me say that I have no idea where story ideas come from or what inspires me to write. I can’t speak for every author out there, but I know I’ve heard others say the same thing. We have no clue why or how characters and dialog and plots creep into our heads, even when we’re doing things as mundane as making some eggs, but they do. That being said, I can tell you exactly where I get my ideas from.

Bear with me. As with life, hopefully everything will make sense by the end, but probably not.

The origin of the name is pretty simple, although the exact eureka moment wasn’t saved for posterity. Maybe it doesn’t stick in my memory because it came together fairly simply. My middle name is Grant. I knew I wanted to use that either as my nom de plume or as a character name. I was leaning in the direction of the latter, but at some point in time while I was thinking about USA’s Burn Notice, I remembered Bruce Campbell once had a show called “The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr.” After that, the character’s name and the series name just locked into place.

As near as I can tell, the actual character traits of Grant Scotland first began forming in my mind somewhere in 2009 and 2010. The first thing I knew about him was that he would be a Philip Marlowe kind of character, except one with more problems and less talent. I was at a pretty low point in my life and it’s possible I wanted my protagonist to be just as hard-luck as me. It’s romantic to think that I wanted to write my way out of my own situation, but that isn’t how it happened at all.

Over the next couple of years, I kept wondering about him and started focusing my reading habits around the kind of man I was imagining. I spent a lot of time with Dashiell Hammet’s Miles Archer, Robert Parker’s Spenser, Glen Cook’s Garrett and, of course, Raymond Chandler’s Marlowe. The noir detective motif isn’t an uncommon one, so there was some other source material as well, but those were the biggies.

At some point in time I realized just how overdone such characters are and decided mine wouldn’t be a detective – well, not a professional, anyway. I think it was about that time that I decided I’d throw a spin on the noir detective theme and make him a spy. I wasn’t up on my espionage reading, so I began digging into some LeCarre and Fleming and… meh. Wasn’t too impressed. I wanted gadgets and disguises, not drawn-out suspense. I wanted Sydney Bristow from Alias. I wanted movie-theatre James Bond or TV Michael Westen. The last one especially appealed to me because of the theme in Burn Notice of a spy with no country, no organization and almost no friends. You couldn’t get much more hard luck than that!

If you look carefully, you’ll notice I pay homage to Burn Notice with an occasional “When you’re a spy…” opening to a paragraph describing something Grant’s doing or planning. I couldn’t resist.

So I had Grant fleshed out pretty nicely. This was somewhere in 2011 or 2012, maybe? All in my head, at this point, by the way. There wasn’t anything to write. How could there be? I still had no world for Grant to inhabit. No plot for him to unravel. I knew I wanted to write fantasy, because it’s a very flexible genre for a new writer and it’s always been one of my favorites. That was when I decided to re-read Glen Cook’s Garrett, P.I. novels. The best way for a writer to start is to imitate the writers he admires. So, I treated it like an exercise and began taking notes on Cook’s books as if I was intending to write them myself. As I did that, I also began to sort out the things I liked and the things I didn’t.

I’ll cover Grant Scotland’s world in another post, because I have a fair number of thoughts about fantasy world building, as do most fantasy writers, I’m sure. For now, I’ll just say I wanted his world to be as close to our own Dark Ages as possible, to emphasize the hard-luck theme. Once that was decided and once I had diagramed a couple of Cook’s plots – which I definitely recommend doing for any aspiring author – then I knew I was ready to start writing stories of my own.

So did I make it clear at all about the where and how of inspiration? Does it make sense? Probably not, right? It doesn’t make sense to me, either. All I can say is, there’s some kind of thing that started banging around in my head one day. I don’t know what to call it and I don’t know how it does what it does. I just know that it’s still going. I hope it never stops, because it seems like the longer it bangs around, the more ideas it picks up and sticks together. Or maybe it just knocks them into a place where I can stick them together. I don’t know. That’s about the best I can come up with.

BLURB:

Tracy Price has a documentary-style life until rockstar Jesse Elliot rewrites her script and takes the wheel to drive her crazy.

In her quest to find a writer missing since the 1930's, Tracy thinks she has discovered exactly how to handle her new relationship. But she may be listening to the wrong voice.

Then Tracy and Jesse find out they've both been keeping some big secrets, and the truth may ruin everything.

Will sharing the missing writer's story open both their hearts?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT TWO:
Jesse lunged toward me. It was too late. I had already launched. He reached out but didn’t connect. Instead, I broke the trajectory of my upper body by grabbing him at chest level and sliding down. He was pushed backward into the table, which stabilized our ungainly host-parasite tableau. He softened my landing so that physically I was fine, but my pride was ready for intensive care.
Heaped at his feet, like a demented penitent, I hugged his knees, my face pressed flat into his thighs. I might as well stay down. What’s worse? To stand up and face you, or remain here, nestled between your legs? What do you think? Then, the finishing touch: I erupted into nervous, snorting laughter. He guessed there was no serious injury.
“It’s nice to see you, too. You are okay, aren’t you? Can you stand?” He reached for my arms to unwrap them from his legs and help me up. I jammed my eyelids together to conjure up a do-over, but no such luck.
I would have to deal with it.
He held my elbows in his hands. “I guess we were both in a hurry to see each other.”
I do appreciate your attempt to lighten the mood, but you are standing SO close. I can feel your body heat. Or is that mine? By the way, you smell tart and fresh, like a lime.
I stared at his shoulder. My dignity meter was stuck on empty.
“Enthusiastic greeting. Thanks for that.” He was blatantly amused.
“It was nothing.” I stepped backward to regain a semblance of independence. Don’t mock me. But, you did go to all the trouble to bring your hair. And your eyes. I might forgive you for witnessing my disgrace. That hair.
GUEST POST:
The Voice, Literary Style. Why not?
By Accident of Birth, I’ve Written a Book by a Woman
I wish there was a show called, “The Voice, Literary Version:  What’s Your Genre?”  -- that popular game show where you read a few lines of your unpublished novel and four award-winning authors judge you on the spot and offer to coach you if they like your ‘voice’.
Can I just wait until one of the experts turns a chair around and smiles encouragement?  Because I have no idea what to call the book I’ve been working on for the past two years.
I do have a published collection of 91,000 words about a woman investigating a 75-year-old literary mystery while she cyber-stalks a musician who is the world's best-known, least-known semi-rock star. It's not a romance.  It's not a mystery.  It's a comedy.  And I shouldn't be afraid to call it that. It’s called “Exit Signs,” and it was published in September by Soul Mate.
Is it bragging to say it's funny?  Doesn’t somebody else have to say that first? Probably.  It's hard to claim humor as your genre -- because what if someone doesn't think it's funny?  I have to face it... if someone doesn't think it's funny, they're not going to like it anyway.   (Logically, then, doesn't that mean they don't like me?  How can I bear that? Doesn't everyone have to think it's funny – and think I’m charming?  Perhaps I could be satisfied with only a 99 percent approval rating on Amazon.  But, no, I'd worry about that one percent and I'd read their comments over and over.  I’d be like a tongue worrying an aching tooth.)
Just wait before you judge me.  I’m NOT overly sensitive, though I would toss and turn if there was a pea under my mattress.  I would stay up wondering who broke into my house and put a pea under my mattress.  And exactly what they meant by it.  That would definitely keep me awake.  Also, should I change my locks?
I digress.  The question is: Should I announce that my second novel is funny?  It's tempting to call it something else and count on someone else to mention the humor.   That's really not fair.  People don't write cowboy stories and wait for someone to point out all the horses and cows before they admit that they have written a western.
So far, my new word child is called Ghostsitter, kind of like a babysitter, but for otherworldly creatures that may or may not exist. I’m in the market for a title, though I understand anything with ghost in the name is a likely best seller.
Title isn’t the only problem. I have the added burden of sex -- I don't mean I’ve written an erotic novel, but I did write a book by a woman – I had to by accident of my birth.   And, woman writer plus humor plus a man/woman relationship -- bingo.  You don't have to say it out loud; I can hear the cold dismissal in your silence.  You think I've written CHICK LIT.  The only thing worse is ROMANCE – and there’s some of that in there too.  I resent that dismissal! I know, who do I think I am being proud of my word-child?  But I am.  Resolutely.  Proud.
AUTHOR BIO:
As a journalist, Patrice Locke wrote a lot of stories with unhappy and even tragic endings. Facts are facts, and a writer doesn't mess with facts.
But fiction is another world. Patrice began writing novels, where she could control the endings and make them as happy as she wants. The best thing about fiction, she says, is having time to think before her characters speak, so they can say the things most of us only come up with after the perfect moment has passed.
She loves to write, read, and watch romantic comedies where life always turns out the way it should. Her only obsessive relationships are with semicolons and Oxford commas.
Though she doesn't like to brag, Patrice is an award-winning artist. She won a gold and diamond watch when she was 13 for decorating a turkey drumstick bone to look like Batman. Alas, that was her last recognition in the fine arts.
Patrice lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where the blue sky is brilliant, the air is thin, and the vistas are breathtaking. She is none of those things, which is one reason she enjoys living among them.
Crave Her Touch
by A.K. Leigh
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE:  Romantic Suspense

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Jennifer “Jenny” Abrahams has three goals: to teach women about mixed martial arts, become North Carolina’s first female mixed martial arts champion, and find true love. Two things stand in her way: the stalker intent on claiming her for himself and her emotional insecurities.
At a crossroads in his career as a witnesses protection minder, Peter “Pete” Gandry, is given the opportunity to return to the scene of his only failure––Smithfield, North Carolina. The assignment is familiar: he must keep an eye on Diana King. He agrees, hoping it will help him find redemption and ease the guilt he feels.
Odd things begin to happen to Jenny. At first, she dismisses them as over-reacting to memories of a stalker from her past. Until, she receives an unsettling note. Four words stand out: I crave your touch...
Increasingly, the evidence points to someone she knows. Who can she trust? And, who is this mysterious newcomer who has ignited long buried passion within her?
When the sister of an old nemesis arrives in Smithfield, Pete is forced to expose his true identity. The town quickly turn against him and Jenny refuses to see him. Just when he thinks it can’t get worse, the stalking evidence begins to point to him.
Can he clear his name and save Jenny from the real stalker in time?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT THREE:

Jenny adjusted the black plastic trash bag in her hand. As she stomped down the front steps, she glanced up at the sky. The sun was making its daily trip back to the horizon. In an hour or so it would be dark. She reached the aluminum trash can at the side of her house and dumped the bag inside it. Before she could take a step away, she overheard Mrs. Montgomery, her silver-haired, widowed neighbor, talking.

“He moved into the trailer park yesterday.”

Another woman, she didn’t recognize the voice, asked, “Is he single?”

“Don’t know.”

Jenny laughed to herself––the Smithfield rumor mill was in its usual fine form. She shook her head. The poor thing. If he’d wanted a quiet escape, he’d chosen the wrong place. Val Robinson at the trailer park was the heart of Smithfield gossip. Everybody would know his business come sundown.

As she strolled back inside her home, the thought of the stranger in town lingered in her mind. Was it the man she’d literally run into that morning? She’d been so focused on getting away from her mother she hadn’t been paying attention to where she was going. The way he’d stared at her––with penetrating green eyes––had sent a storm of butterflies through her stomach.

Why hadn’t she thought to introduce herself and ask his name?

The adrenaline caused by her mother’s arrival, mixed with the confusion at the reaction to the stranger, had urged her to get away. Now that she was calm, questions came: how long was he staying? Why was he there? Was he single? And . . . how many people in town were asking the same questions?

REVIEW:

This book is exciting, intriguing, and suspenseful!  This book is full of love, romance, hope, forgiveness, redemption, and second chances.

As a victim of stalking, I do enjoy reading these types of books as it brings light to this heinous crime.  Many people don’t understand how serious stalking is and how far it can go.  Books like this one, highlight how important this is and how it can easily and quickly escalate.

I think this book was well written and thoroughly researched.

Some things were easy to see coming, but this book is a romantic suspense and there are a few things that will surprise you.

This book was jam packed with action and suspense that will keep you at the edge of your seat.

This book was so fast paced and there was a lot going on.  It definitely didn’t drag, but so much was happening you kind have had to be like, “Wait, what just happened?!” and possibly re-read that last paragraph again.

This book featured multiple POVs which I love; because it helps you really understand and connect with the characters on a deeper level.

Both main characters, Jenny and Pete were well developed, honest, and relatable.

I really liked Jenny as she was intelligent, strong, independent, and a fighter.  After being a victim of stalking she didn’t hide – she took back her life.  Jenny took mixed martial arts and self-defense classes.  She even went a step further by teaching other women about MMA, and helping them become brave, tough, and prepared for worst case scenarios.

I also liked Pete as he was genuine and always wanting and trying to be a better man.  Pete Gandry works in Witness Protection.  He is sent on assignment back to Smithfield, a small town he has a negative and complicated history with.  Pete works hard to recover from his mistakes and start over with a clean slate.  It isn’t long before he meets Jenny and they quickly fall in love with each other.  However, Jenny is still dealing with past and more recent issues that keep her distracted.  Both bring heavy baggage into this complicated relationship and they are faced with many challenges individually and as a couple.  They say love can conquer all right?  This book is sure worth reading to see if that’s true!

This book is book two in the Smithfield Series.  Although this book can be read as a standalone, there are so many references to the first book that I think it would have been better to have read book one first.  Book two still made sense on its own, however, if I had read book one first I think book two would have been more enjoyable and easier to follow along.  Reading book one would have allowed for a better understanding of the characters backgrounds and the story-line.

There is a love story – as this book is labeled a romance.  However, I thought the love story took more of a secondary backseat role with the main focus of a suspense/thriller.  I didn’t mind that, as I am more interested in being intrigued and captivated – which I was while reading this book.

This book is full of excitement, intrigue, suspense, love, romance, forgiveness, redemption, and second chances.  This book does have some surprises and twists that you won’t see coming.  I do recommend this book, however, I highly suggest reading book one first.

**Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.**

BLURB:

When Autumn Stiles lands the advertising job of her dreams, she feels it's the happiest day of her life. She doesn't count on the tall, handsome, dreamy-eyed Stuart Tanner doing his best to get her to quit.

When Tanner learns that he has a new socialite employee at the advertising agency where he works, he is determined to get rid of her. She is obviously just trying out for a hard-working job that she thinks is glamorous.

But soon the heat sizzles between them and he determines he will never give in to his desires.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT TWO:
The Clio Award was like the Academy Award for advertising. It was awarded for creative excellence in all forms of communication.
Autumn rushed into her office breathless. Stuart looked up from his computer monitor.
“Who died and left you a bundle?”
“Money? Who cares about money? This is way better than money, and definitely something money can’t buy.”
“Really?”
Autumn rolled her eyes. “Look, do you want to hear the great news or not?”
“Sure, humor me.”
“We’re up for a Clio!”
Stuart stared gaped-mouth at Autumn as the words she had just spoken filtered through his shocked brain. Suddenly, he jumped up and grabbed her as they did an impromptu happy dance around the room. It took approximately thirty seconds before they both stopped dancing and locked eyes for several moments. Then their lips met. Though they broke apart quickly after realizing what they’d done, Autumn still felt its sweetness flow through her, her heart wanting more—much, much more.
