“Don’t worry, I’m the biggest predator in this ocean,” he grinned and flashed his fangs.

It should have scared her she supposed, but all it did was make her tingle with anticipation. What was wrong with her?

He pushed the boat back toward land, then pulled her in for a kiss, seeming to have no trouble staying afloat. She felt a rise of panic as the boat drifted away.

“Katherine, I will always keep you safe,” he promised and took her hand. “Now, follow me, we will swim fast and hard, straight down. The vortex will start to pull and when it does, things will go fast.”

“You won’t let go of me?”

“Of course not,” he promised. “Now, take a deep breath.”

She did, and then they were underwater and against every instinct, she was letting him drag her down toward the bottom. Soon her lungs began to burn, and panic swelled and just when she thought the panic might be too much, she felt a pull all over her body, a push behind her and a sucking in front. She was thrown through the water so fast she couldn’t have stopped it if she’d wanted to. She stopped swimming and clung to Ian’s arm with both hands. Her mind started to fuzz, she was desperate for air, and she was sure he was wrong.

How to Get Over Rejection

I was born on July 8 so I am a Cancer but I have Sagittarius as a rising sign so I can be feisty. I have two beautiful unique children. Both named with a K like the Kardashians lol. And though I am a dog person I have a cat named Persephone. She is a Siamese cat. I love Huskies.

Rejection in the world of writing is a double-edged sword. It's an inevitable part of the journey, and while dealing with it is necessary, the emotional toll it takes can be profound. The mere mention of rejection can stir feelings of dread, anxiety, sadness, and sometimes even plunge writers into deep bouts of depression. The statistics can be disheartening, with only a mere 3 percent of writers achieving traditional publication through agents. Agents play a crucial role in the industry, but their availability is limited, and their preferences can be highly selective. This reality can be frustrating for many writers who are deeply connected to their work, firmly believing it defies conventional genre boundaries and requires no further improvement. I've been in that position myself.

Rejection is not a reflection of your worth as a writer. Understand that even the most celebrated authors faced rejection early in their careers. Use each rejection as a chance to learn and improve. Take the feedback provided by editors, agents, or readers seriously, and view it as a stepping stone to enhance your writing skills. Sometimes this works and sometimes it doesn’t. In my case a lot of the overworked agents didn’t provide reasoning. That didn’t help. But I submitted to a small production company, and they gave me details about what was missing and what worked. It helped me improve and boy did I. You can improve your work with critique partners or beta readers.

Rejection can be disheartening, but it's essential to remain resilient. Remember that writing is a journey, and every "no" brings you closer to a "yes." Stay persistent and committed to your craft. Set writing goals, keep a daily writing routine, and use rejection as fuel to keep moving forward. Persistence is something I wear on a daily basis as if I didn’t, I would have never put out my first book. I’d held onto my book for 20 years and I still am not completely satisfied but if I nitpicked forever, I would not be celebrating it now. I would be in the endless place of rewriting Hell.

Receiving critiques can initially feel like getting graded in school, potentially triggering past memories of red marks symbolizing errors. I, too, experienced this feeling of inadequacy. However, it's important to remember that your unique voice and perspective set your writing apart. Each writer has their distinct way of expressing ideas, their individual turn of phrase, and their own experiences that shape their writing. Just as Yasmine Galenorn doesn't write like J.K. Rowling or Stephen King, every author brings something unique to the table. While it's crucial to refine your work, what makes it truly yours is your individuality. Embrace your uniqueness and use it to your advantage, as it's the diversity of voices and styles that enrich the world of literature.

If you're consistently receiving rejections from a particular publication or agent, don't let it dishearten you. Instead, consider diversifying your submission strategy. Submit your work to multiple outlets, publications, or agents simultaneously. Explore different genres and markets for your writing to increase your chances of finding the right fit and ultimately getting published.

In addition to this, building a network of fellow writers is invaluable. Platforms like Twitter, where you can share stories of rejection, and Facebook, where you can find writing groups, can be excellent places to connect with your peers. My first writing friend was discovered through a Facebook group, and we became critique partners. I can't imagine a day without talking to her. Another dear friend was found during a writing course. Surrounding yourself with a supportive writing community is crucial. Share your experiences and frustrations with fellow writers who have likely encountered rejection themselves. Attend writing workshops, conferences, and local writing groups to network and learn from others. This community can offer you the encouragement, advice, and motivation needed to persist in your writing journey.

Addressing mental health is a crucial aspect of your writing journey. Your well-being is at the core of your ability to create. It's essential to take care of yourself, and there's no "you" without good mental health. When it comes to breaks, don't hesitate to take as many as you need. While deadlines are a reality, burnout is just as real. I, too, recently found myself overwhelmed by self-imposed deadlines, and it resulted in writer's block that left me stagnant for a week. This was unusual for me, as I'm accustomed to writing tirelessly every day. However, when I returned, it was as though I'd wiped the canvas clean. I regained my focus, could see errors clearly, and work more effectively. Rest is not merely a suggestion; it's a necessity, much like sleep. To maintain your mental well-being, engage in activities that help you relax and recharge. Whether it's through reading, meditation, or spending time in nature, these moments of respite are vital for a clear mind and emotional stability. They play a significant role in preserving your motivation and nurturing your creativity.

EXCERPT ONE:

His foot reached out to blur the circle and the ghost changed. Agony forced every other emotion aside. He couldn’t breathe, a heavy weight settled on his chest. Panic set in as he wheezed, his heart racing the way hers had raced. Was he experiencing her last minutes or just panicking at the emotions? Could he trust himself? Darkness started to crowd the edges of his vision. Not enough air. Sweat broke out along his back. Somewhere, Cloak was saying something, but he couldn’t hear it over the pounding of blood in his ears. He was going to die here. The blackness got closer.

“No.” The flood of emotions stopped immediately, as Drake stepped in front of him. “That’s not how this works. You don’t get to scream at him.”

His head throbbed, stinging like acid dripping down his face, but he could breathe again. The darkness receded. The first thing he saw was Drake moving into the center of the stain, acting as if the blood wasn’t there.

“I’ll give you enough energy to manifest, but start screaming again and I will end you, even if we haven’t heard a damn thing you’ve got to say. Understand?” She paused, then reached her hand out. A shaft of sunlight came in through the window and her hand seemed to glow. Then the end of it disappeared, replaced with a chest. The shape grew outward, a filmy light turning into a woman. The process took less than a minute, and he heard the sheriff whisper to God.

“Dr. Chen, she can talk to you now.” Drake said it with a very deliberate emphasis on the word talk. Whatever the ghost intended, it wasn’t going to stand up to her. A deep surge of gratitude coursed through him.

Word Crimes, a Writing Vice That Haunts Me and My Cure

I confess: words get stuck in my head, and I end up using them to death. In this book it was trinket. I needed a way to refer to magical objects and jewelry that wasn’t jewelry. Baubles and decorations never seemed to work. When I tried to describe a ballroom filled with rich people wearing expensive magical ornaments, it conjured up bizarre Christmas decorations as necklaces. After I stopped laughing, I realized that was not the way to describe heavy gemstone encrusted necklaces, earrings, hair clips, tie tacks, and other accessories.

So, trinkets. In roughly 125,000 words, I used trinkets 13 times. In early edits, I convinced myself that one word being .0001% of the words used in the book wouldn’t matter. But as I went through my final reads, it felt like trinkets was printed in a size thirty-font in rainbow colors.

I got rid of all but one.

I’ve got a similar story about a line of dialog that starts off with “Ick!” and then goes on to talk about the thing. If you’ve held a conversation with me, in text or in person, you’d know that “ick” is my go-to response for a lot of, well, icky situations. That makes sense for me, but for my three Harvard trained PhD’s to all say ick the same way I do? Nope. It had to go.

Writing dialog can be difficult. I generally write the way I speak, but my speech is influenced by so many things: my family, my education, the situation I’m in. I have none of those things in common with my characters so we shouldn’t have a lot of words in common. Being aware of it helps, but there are also a couple of tricks I use. The easiest is imaging someone I know saying the dialog out loud. It helps if it’s someone with a strong accent or that you identify strongly with a place or situation. If your dog walker sounds wrong saying something or you can’t picture your coworker reading it, should your character be saying it?

Another way to spot my word crimes, is to use a word cloud generator to visually see the words that pop out. For this book the most often used words included magic, ghost, blood, Raven, Ian, Cloak, and mother. That’s not a bad summary of big themes in the story, so I’m content.

My favorite trick? Picking someone I talk to on a regular basis and steal their speech pattern. One of the folks in my favorite coffee shop has a sweet as syrup Alabama accent and peppers her speech with phrases like ‘sweating like a sinner in church’. I’d never give a character all of her verbal quirks, but spread out over the course of a book her metaphors are real winners.

And last, but not least, don’t forget the value of Find/Replace in your favorite writing program. If you let it count up the number of times you’ve used a word, you’ll probably end up shocked enough to get rid of it. Or decide that it’s not nearly as icky as you imagined.

Arrogant men stood different, carried themselves different, and smirked when they should smile. The redhead clearly enjoyed his own company and Ana dug people who loved themselves—narcissists. Her therapist would say that was a problem, but she wasn’t here, so who cared?

Tilting his head in a question and looking directly at her, the redhead arched an eyebrow; she’d been staring at him. A normal person would have smiled, maybe even waved, but Ana rolled her eyes and turned back to the bar. Because I have no game.

“Here, girl,” said the bartender, and her drink appeared. When Ana exchanged her card for the bourbon, he asked, “Open tab?”

“Nah, I’m about to be out of here.”

“Aight girl.”

“Hey, how old is the kid over there? The redhead on the terrace, six o’clock,” asked Ana. She lived alone and had no dignity, so why not?

The bartender stared behind Ana, squinting. “I carded him already.” Yeah, because Ana looked like she was from the liquor license revoking… agency?

“I’ve seen him in here before. He’s all right,” said the bartender answering the question Ana hadn’t asked. “The blonde is hot, though,” he continued.

“Is he looking at me?” Ana asked.

“Nope, he’s looking at the blonde.” With that, he took her card and turned.

Ana threw a glance over her shoulder—carefully. He was talking to a blonde wearing an off-the-shoulder black dress. The woman’s face was turned away from Ana but the snooty attire said ‘not a college kid’.  Perhaps he liked older women, which was good, because Ana wasn’t eighteen or nineteen… or however old he was. At twenty-seven, she was already trying to rob cradles—she would need more than one therapist soon.

Falling in Love with the Main Characters

Silver to the Heart, Book 1 of the Light of Adua series; therefore the entire series, is written with multiple point of view characters. So I have a handful of main characters, not just one, and I love them all. Even the side characters and the villains, I love them. Because if I don’t, why would a reader?

Whenever I give voice to a character, it comes from a place of empathy. Everyone, even villains, think they are doing the right thing— which I think is how real people are.

Set in modern-day New Orleans (most of the time), Light of Adua is a dark fantasy series with vampires who are all centuries old, and at the end of ‘Silver to the Heart’, they are at war with the supernatural. So, I have to fathom, how a diverse cast of characters, some of whom are actual warlords from Japan’s era of Warring States, would behave in such a situation, and I see a lot of grey area for morals and ethics. 

For example, one of my main characters is a 318-year-old Russian telekinetic vampire who’s lived in New Orleans since the founding days of the city— so, he’s southern. At the beginning of ‘Silver to the Heart’, he’s kind, funny, nice, and lives worry-free frequenting bars and courting human women. Whilst on a mission, he falls in love with Ana, a twenty-seven-year-old human girl from Maine. But when the dark war begins his supposed ethics, as well as love for Ana, will be tested.

Vampires in this story are escaped souls from a realm of magic that had fallen to eternal night, and when Drake’s memory of former life awakens, he remembers he loves another. Throughout the series, he has an intense and obsessive relationship with another character whom he claims is like a father to him— a five-hundred-year-old telepathic Japanese warlord vampire. The telepath’s name is Sasuke, and Drake is more protective of him than he is of Ana because he’s known him for over three centuries. And this is how all my characters are: they are complex, have past wounds, and when push comes to shove, they have dark tendencies and compromising morals.

I don’t try to make my characters lovable by forcing black and white good vs evil on them, but I do write them as who they are, so (hopefully) a reader can understand why they do what they do— even if they don’t agree with them. None of my characters meander through the story, they all have strong wills and wants that make them collide with one another.

Even my main villain, a templar knight who’s gone mad, thinks he’s saving the world by ridding it of humans— because he believes humans are evil. This is not in Book 1 by the way, in Book 1, he’s long dead. How does that work? Well, let me show you… Book 1 is perma-free, please give it a shot.

So in short, I don’t set out trying to make characters lovable, but I do hope you fall in love with them as I have, despite their many, many flaws. Because we are all flawed and isn’t that beautiful?

EXCERPT ONE:

Melrose sat on the bed across from someone with bouncy, blonde hair that flowed down her back. When the girl turned and flashed a smile at Lucas, goosebumps rose from his feet to his face. He did a little head jerk to move the hair out of his eyes, but yeah, Star, the hottest girl at Tangleforest High, was in his house, casual, like his sister’s room was a normal place to hang out.

Be cool, he told himself. “What’s up?” He looked to see what homework they had, thinking a tutoring session was the only sane explanation for Star’s visit. But instead of books or paper, a few oversized cards were laid out on the bed. A second ticked by before he realized what type of cards. Tarot. Immediately, the tension he’d felt earlier returned. “What are y’all doing?”

“Playing a fortune telling game,” Melrose said innocently.

Lucas’ adrenaline started to pump, and suddenly his ears buzzed, the details from the past erupting through his head in a concentrated instant: swirls of color, lost in the trees, gingerbread house of horror, the witch, the cage, the curse. “The hell you are.” He stormed across the room and with one quick whoosh, the cards went flying off the bed.
