GENRE:  Women's Fiction/Romance

BLURB:

Constellations follows Tess Lee and Jack Miller after three years of marriage as they navigate the meaning of love and family over a series of holidays. Tess is a wildly successful and world-famous novelist. Her inspirational books explore our innermost struggles and the human need to believe that there is light at the end of the tunnel. Jack is a former federal agent. After spending decades immersed in a violent world, a residue remains. Both healing from past trauma, together they have finally built the life they wish to live. What will happen to their blissful union when Jack’s childhood family resurfaces? When Tess and Jack visit the Millers for Christmas, how will insecurity, a sense of missed opportunities, and the need for redemption test their relationship? When a terrible accident threatens everything in an instant, will they learn the true meaning of unconditional love? Their loved ones are along for the ride: Omar, Tess’s sarcastic best friend who calls her Butterfly; the female president of the United States, with whom Tess talks politics and bakes cookies; Joe, Jack’s friend from the Bureau who understands the sacrifices he’s made; Bobby and Gina, their younger friends who never fail to lighten the mood; and the Miller family. Constellations is a novel about family – those into which we’re born and those we create – the human desire to belong and feel connected, the true nature of intimacy, and the power of love to heal and redeem. Written as unfolding action, Constellations is a poignant novel that moves fluidly between melancholy, humor, and joy.

EXCERPT ONE:

        Tess clung to Jack as they sped along the cliffside road on their Harley, winding around the last curve as they approached their house. When they arrived home, Jack carefully took off Tess’s helmet, kissed her, and grabbed the bag of fruit they’d bought at the farmers market. She pulled the scrunchie out of her hair, releasing dirty blonde locks down to her waist. They headed inside. “You thirsty, baby?” he asked.

        She nodded.

        He quickly tapped a coconut, stuck a paper straw in, and handed it to her.

        “You’ve gotten so good at that,” she said, taking a sip.

        “Yeah, just in time to go back to DC. I can’t believe we have to leave our Hawaiian paradise tomorrow morning. We’re crazy to leave Maui this time of year.”

        “I know, baby. But we’ll be back in less than three months to throw Omar and Clay the tropical Valentine’s Day wedding of their dreams. Besides, it’ll be fun to see our friends.”

        He smiled and kissed her forehead.

        “Here, have some,” she said, handing him the coconut. “Let’s leave the pineapple out. We can grill it tonight for our Thanksgiving feast while we sit on the lanai and watch the sunset.” She kicked her shoes off, slipped her T-shirt over her head, and shimmied out of her shorts, revealing a hot pink string bikini. “Bet I can beat you to the ocean,” she teased, darting off.

        Soon, they were splashing around in the warm water, the sun beating down on them. Jack wrapped his tanned arms around Tess and kissed her. They stared at each other, the energy between them electric.

        “I could get lost in your big, brown eyes,” he said.

        She smiled and said, “Come on, let’s dry off.” They walked to their pool and lay together on a chaise lounge.

        “Jack?” Tess whispered.

        “Yeah, baby.”

        “I know you hold back sometimes, but you don’t need to.”

        “Tess…”

        “Baby, I know you do. There’s nothing that could ever happen between us that I wouldn’t want.”

        He caressed the side of her face. “You’re so beautiful and delicate. I just want you to feel safe and loved.”

        “I do and I always will.”

        “You’ve been through so much. It wasn’t that long ago that Ray was stalking you; I know that brought up memories of your childhood abuse. I don’t ever want to be the cause of your pain or remind you of the ways you have suffered.”

        “You couldn’t. You only push those thoughts further away. I trust you, Jack. Nothing could ever change that. I want to share everything with you. I’ve never felt as close to another human being as I do to you.” She ran her fingers through his wet, salty hair and said, “I still remember the first time we came here, before we owned this place. You took me in the shower and we were so free.”

        He grazed his fingers along her cheek.

        “I’m gonna rinse off,” she said. She untied her bikini top, let it fall to the floor, and headed for the outdoor shower.

        Jack hustled out of his swim trunks and followed her. She flipped the water on, turned toward him, and smiled. He cupped her face in his hands, kissed her softly, and with one swift movement, swung her around and pulled her bathing suit bottom down. “Don’t let me hurt you,” he whispered. He pushed her against the wall and they made love passionately.

        With his quivering body pressed tightly against hers, Jack kissed Tess’s neck and nibbled on her ear. Finally satiated, he turned the shower off and wrapped towels around each of them. He picked her up and cradled her in his arms as he carried her to a lounge chair. They resumed their tender kisses, Jack caressing the side of her face. He looked at her with unadulterated adoration.

        “I love you so much,” he said.

        “I love you too. More than anything.”

GUEST POST:

My Favorite Scene in Constellations

Ok, so my true favorite scene in this book is actually the epilogue, and I don’t want to spoil that for readers. There are many moments in this book that I love. One of my favorite scenes is when Tess helps Jack reconnect with his family. Jack has been estranged from his family for fifteen years. His family has no idea why he was out of touch for so long. Jack worked for the FBI as a field agent doing deep undercover work in counterterrorism. Not wanting to endanger his family, he let them go for their own protection. Retired now and happily married to Tess, when his mother Marry calls to invite the couple to Christmas, Tess convinces Jack to go so he can have the family he deserves. Things are tense from the outset. Jack’s father, John, is harsh. When he learns that Jack isn’t employed, and “living off” his wealthy wife, he admonishes his son. He also has harsh judgements toward Tess for amassing so much wealth, which he finds “immoral.” Things continue to spiral. What I love about the following scene, is that Tess becomes a bridge for her husband to reconnect with his family. She does this simply by being herself. This is a turning point.

Here’s the scene:

        That afternoon, the kitchen in the Miller house was bustling with noise. Tess, Julie, and Mikey were making Christmas ornaments with the boys at the table. Mary was washing dishes and John was drying them. Jack came into the room holding his cell phone. “Tess, Omar is on the phone for you. He couldn’t reach you on yours.”

        She looked up, glitter on her face. “I turned the ringer off when we got here. Is everything okay?”

        “He said it’s a work thing,” Jack replied.

        “Well, I’m a little busy. Can I call him back?” she asked.

        “He said it’s urgent but he’ll make it quick.”

        “My hands are a mess. Please set the phone on the table and put it on speaker.” She looked at the boys and said, “I’m sorry, this will only take a minute.”

        Mary turned off the faucet so Tess would have quiet for her call, and Julie put a finger to her lips to hush the boys.

        “Hi, Omar. You’re on speakerphone. I have glue all over my hands,” she said.

        “Of course you do,” Omar said with a laugh.

        “I’m making Christmas ornaments with my nephews.”

        “Butterfly, Crystal and I have been trying to get in touch with you since yesterday. I need your final approval on the streaming deal for the limited series.”

        “I turned my phone off. I told you, no work until after the holidays.”

        “I know and I’m sorry, but they want the write-off on the books for this calendar year. Everyone will be out of the office from tomorrow until after the new year, so we have to get it done today. I know this donation is important to you. I can sign the paperwork; I just need the green light.”

        She sighed. “Fine.”

        “You were right,” Omar said. “We were able to get them up to three point four million, and they’ll make the donations directly. Is it a deal?”

        “Yes, that’s fine,” Tess replied.

        “I also need to confirm that you want to donate one hundred percent. Barry’s still hoping you’ll have a change of heart and keep some of it, but you know how accountants are.”

        “Well, he can keep hoping. Have them donate the whole thing.”

        “You still want half to go to veterans and half to that children’s wish organization?” Omar asked.

        “Yes,” Tess replied. “Is that it?”

        “I’m afraid there’s one last question, and I’m bracing myself for your response. Don’t kill the messenger, Butterfly, but your publisher wanted me to ask if you’d reconsider your insistence on keeping the donation anonymous. They’d love to get some publicity out of it. Eliza Elkington could do a profile in her magazine, or you could do a TV spot with Diane.”

        “Absolutely not. That offends me to the core. You can tell Claire that if I see anything in the media about this, even so much as a whisper, I’ll assume they leaked the story and I’ll be publishing my next book with someone else.”

        “I’m sorry, I had to ask.”

        “Please wish everyone happy holidays and tell Claire I hope her son has recovered well from his injury. Are we done?”

        “Yes, Butterfly. I’m sorry to disturb you. I hope you and Jack are having a good trip.”

        “I love you to pieces, but if you call me about work again, you’re fired.”

        “From your business or your life?”

        “Both.”

        Omar laughed. “If it’s any consolation, Butterfly, you’re doing a good thing that will help a lot of people.”

        “Nice attempt at redemption. I’ll talk to you when we’re back in DC. Give my love to Clay.”

        She gestured at Jack to hang up. There was complete silence in the room. Mikey and Julie looked up at Jack, their mouths agape. John and Mary looked at each other with shocked expressions and then back at Jack and Tess.

        Noticing everyone staring, Tess softly said, “I’m sorry for the interruption.”

        John cleared his throat. “Tess, I’m a vet.”

        Tess smiled kindly. “I know. Jack told me. Your service was what inspired him to enlist. Since leaving his full-time job with the Bureau, he’s done a lot of wonderful volunteer work to support vets.”

        John looked at Jack and then at Mary.

        “What John’s trying to say is that was a very generous thing you did,” Mary said.

        Tess smiled and turned to the boys. “So, I think the snowflake needs more silver glitter. What do you think? Maybe we can convince your Uncle Jack to sit down and help.” She picked up an ornament and began sprinkling sparkling flakes on it. Jack sat down next to her and squeezed her thigh. Mikey looked at him and smiled. Jack craned his neck to look at his parents, and they smiled too. Mary turned the faucet on and went back to washing the dishes. Jack leaned over and kissed Tess on the cheek. “Here,” she said, handing him a star ornament. “Why don’t you start with this one?”

The Road to Delano
by John DeSimone

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Historical Fiction
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

It’s 1968, and a strike by field workers in the grape fields has ripped an otherwise quiet central California town down the middle. Jack Duncan is a Delano high school senior who is on his way to earning a baseball scholarship, hoping to escape the turmoil infesting his town. His mother has kept from him the real cause of his father’s death, who was a prominent grower. But when an old friend hands Jack evidence indicating his father was murdered, he is compelled to dig deeper. This throws him and his best friend and teammate, Adrian Sanchez, whose father is a striking field worker, into the labor conflict led by Cesar Chavez. Road to Delano is the path Jack and Adrian must take to find their strength, their duty, and their destiny.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT TWO:
1968
The voices from the fields woke Jack early on Saturday. The musky odor of grapes sifted into his bedroom even though his closed window was shut to the morning cold. He pulled back the drape and row upon row of trellised vines emerged from the gauzy twilight. They stretched to the horizon on three sides of his house. He thrust the window up and leaned out, and a biting wind chilled his face. Thick dark clouds filled the sky, and the voices of workers trimming and bundling echoed in the morning stillness. In these quiet moments, he imagined the land calling to him. Did it matter anymore that all of it was gone?
“Jack, you up?” his mother called from downstairs.
Off to the east, a red bruise ran across the rugged spine of the Sierra peaks. The air heavy with moisture, it was time to get on the road before a storm rolled in.
Jack slipped into his jeans and plaid shirt, tall and sinewy, hardened from work and sports. Ella, his girlfriend, always told him he never fought his clothes like some guys; they moved with him. He didn’t know what to say when she said things like that. He brushed back his blond crew cut and stooped to tie his boots, then he snatched his sheepskin coat off the hook by the door. His mother called again.
The day was already half gone from the tone of her voice.
In the kitchen, he grabbed a piece of toast, slurped some coffee, and bolted outside.
He mounted the cab of his father’s dirt-splattered combine parked by the rickety porch of the Victorian, now tired and sagging. Jack fired it up and the engine idled under his throttle foot. The strong pulses surprised him after all those years of sitting idle. He revved it up, ready to make its last run into Delano.
The cab of the boxy, once-bright yellow combine, now the peeling paint, was pocked with rust, perched over the rotary thresher blade in front, raised for road travel. The square separation box that stripped the stalks of their grain pods hunched behind him. Most of the gauges worked—fuel, oil, temp, volts. He flicked on the headlights in the gray morning, two above on the cab’s roof and two below, illuminating the rusting threshing blade.
GUEST POST:
Everyone loves a hero! Tell us all about this genuine character and the inspiration behind their development.
Recently, I read a story of an ex-football player who sprinted across a parking lot to catch a child dropped out of a fourth-floor window. The apartment building was engulfed in flames, and the desperate mother couldn't escape. Out of other options, she dropped her child out the window, hoping someone would save him. And that someone was an ex-marine and a college receiver. He snared the child on a flat-out run. He was an ordinary person who rose to the moment in a heroic act. In my estimation, he's an everyday hero.
Look, I enjoy a superman or batman movie like most folks, but heroic exploits are expected of them. If they don't do something utterly dramatic, I'm bored. But it's the everyday heroes, those who we have no expectations of going beyond what they do day in and day out, who stir my imagination. The lunch pail guy who snares a plunging child out of the air. The waitress who performs the Heimlich on a choking patron.
Our neighborhoods are filled with quiet heroes if we looked around. So is our culture at large. Where does the courage to act in the moment come from when others stand by and watch? That's what intrigues me about the everyday hero.
It was nearly a decade ago I read a series of essays on Civil Disobedience that included a biography of Cesar Chavez. I knew of him at the time, but I didn't know what he had accomplished. In reading about his life, I was impressed by how he used nonviolent action. He identified with the poorest of the poor in California's grape fields and led them on a successful mission to improve their wages and working conditions. He did it through the practice of nonviolence. Chavez had an eighth-grade education, he was a devout Catholic, and he had the gift and experience of organizing people to stand up for their rights. These fieldworkers were Americans, but they were not treated like other Americans in their workplaces. Chavez just wanted fairness and justice for the farmworkers. He refused to stand by and watch his fellow farmworkers treated like chattel. So he learned what to do and how to do it, and he acted.
What made him heroic in building a farmworkers union? He never tore down his community to get what he wanted. He never led a riot. He only wanted mutual success--for his union members and the growers. They needed each other.
It seemed so simple. But it wasn't. Farmworkers had been agitating for better wages and working conditions in the Central Valley for most of the twentieth century to no avail. That is until Chavez came along and followed the example of Gandhi and others to use nonviolence as an organizing principle in a labor struggle.
No one had ever done that before.
That's what inspired me to write a story set in the grape fields that surround the Ag town of Delano, California. It's a hot place in the summer and freezing in winter—the perfect climate to grow delicious table grapes. And I wondered what the kids in high school thought of his stand on nonviolence. The strike split the town down the middle, and kids tend to take sides. I had two characters in mind. One the son of a grower, the other the son of a farmworker. So I asked myself, "What side were these characters on?"
And that's the story of the Road to Delano. Two high school students who must confront their prejudices, their inclinations, and their plans.
The Road to Delano is the path Jack and Adrian must take to find their strength, their duty, and their destinies.
It's a literal road, yes. But it is also a path of moral choices that shape their futures. I often wonder, what would I have done in similar circumstances? What would you have done?
I hope you enjoy reading the Road to Delano.
Stranded in Love
GENRE: Contemporary Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

If a gold medal was awarded for Worst Day Ever, Laney Calderone would win it today, hands down. She’s just discovered she's pregnant, her fiancé abruptly dumps her when she tells him, and her new car refuses to start as a brutal snowstorm hits Toronto.

Good Samaritan Tyler Hammond offers to take her home; however, with the heavy snow falling and his patience dwindling, Laney’s gold medal day isn’t over yet.

Storms intensify both outside and in as Laney finds herself inexplicably attracted to this tall, dark and very handsome but infuriating stranger.

Can Laney fight her unwanted yet increasing desire for this man long enough to get through the relentless storm? And will Tyler let her walk out of his life as easily as she came into it?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT FOUR:
Tyler took Laney into his arms and pulled her close. The music changed to that unforgettable jazz melody she knew so well, and out of the corner of her eye she noticed Stephen on the balcony with the band leader, a devilish grin on his face. Up to his old tricks again.
“You look ravishing tonight, Ginger.” Tyler whispered in her ear. “Did I ever tell you red is my favourite colour?”
Laney tried to move to the rhythm except her feet would not obey. She felt clumsy and self-conscious dancing with Tyler with so many people watching, especially her family.
“You feel a little tense, my love. Relax and enjoy.”
She closed her eyes wishing she could walk away, but that wasn’t going to happen. Tyler held her tight and guided her effortlessly around the floor. The mesmerizing scent of his cologne reverberated through her senses and she surprised herself when she realized she was smiling. The Tyler Trap, she thought. You’ve gotten stuck in it again, you idiot!
With a deep sigh, she let herself surrender and leaned into him. He smiled and pulled her even closer. It didn’t matter to her anymore who saw them, who noticed they were so close; she didn’t care.
As she floated around the hall Laney became immersed in her surroundings. The Christmas tree lights twinkling, the distant chatter and laughter of the guests, the captivating tune, and the wonderful feel of this amazing man in her arms.
Laney wanted to freeze time again. This man, this music, this moment. She rested her chin on his shoulder and let him take complete control. They moved as one, oblivious to every eye on them as they soared in the clouds, leaving all the other guests back on Earth.
GUEST POST:
Who Inspired Your Love for Books?
Thanks so much for letting me share my words with you today, Ally. It’s such a pleasure to be here.
My parents inspired my love of books. They always read to me and my sisters at bedtime, we’d visit the library as a family every couple of weeks, and we were always reading – in winter cuddled in a blanket by the fire, and in summer sprawled on that same blanket underneath the huge maple tree on our front lawn. I loved it.  Some of my favourite books from my childhood were The Wind in the Willows, anything by Beatrix Potter, and I loved the Nancy Drew series.  I even volunteered in the school library when I was in Grades 5 and 6, I just loved being around books, and still do.
I began writing stories as a child, and that love grew as I did. My compositions always earned top marks and several teachers suggested I seek out a career that would involve writing.  My creative writing teacher in high school told me my dialogue ‘sizzles’ and that I should become a playwright.  I haven’t yet penned a play, but you never know!
My love of writing romance novels began years ago. I’m a girly girl and just love the thought of meeting that handsome prince and living happily ever after.  It sounds like a fairy tale, but it does happen. I know, because it happened to me!  I met Larry in 1995, we were married in 1997 and, if it hadn’t been for his on-the-job injury, we would’ve lived out our happily ever after until we were old and grey. Sadly, he passed away in 2017, but not before leaving me with many wonderful memories and some fabulous ideas for new romance novels.
I will always write. It’s exciting, comforting, and an escape from this everyday world that can be so brutal and unforgiving.  It’s nice to open the pages of a book and know that you’re welcome in a whole new world.  So I invite your followers to open up Stranded in Love and get lost in the exciting world of Laney Calderone and her family.  It’s Book #1 in the series, Book #2 will be available early next year.
~Thanks!~
AUTHOR BIO:
Born in England to a Monty Python-loving dad and a Lawrence Welk-loving mum - tea drinkers all - we moved to Canada when I was seven. "Say book, say look" my new classmates would hound me just so they could have a good chuckle at my accent. But being incredibly shy, this was a great way for me to make friends.
My love of words and a creative imagination prompted English teachers to urge me to write for a living, especially after I got a letter from the Prime Minister who thanked me for writing to him!  So cool for a twelve-year-old!
Through the years, I wrote while I earned a living as an Administrative Assistant in various companies; then I owned a Wedding Coordination business for six years (talk about romance!), all the while being happily married to the love of my life.
These interesting jobs plus wedded bliss gave me oodles of ideas for romantic plot lines, tall, dark and handsome heroes and feisty, beautiful heroines, and, of course, the happily ever afters.
I currently live in Mississauga and spend time with family and friends, and struggle daily with the wine and chocolate that somehow magically appear in my house...
And, amidst the endless cups of strong tea, while the dead parrot sketch and Cole Porter songs whirl around in my brain, I write. I will always write romances because I love creating fascinating characters whose lives I can make completely miserable before I give them their happily ever after.
