EXCERPT TWO:

You’re supposed to forgive and forget.

If you asked most people, you do the hard work of forgiving to get rewarded with peace of mind. Forgiving them makes you a better person, helps set you free, yada yada.

I stopped fighting with the blasted wool that kept shredding under my twitchy fingers, throwing my current therapy project away from me with disgust. Counting stitches this morning to finish the crocheted afghan I’d promised my sister Rose had proved impossible. Normally, I enjoyed applying the skill my grandmother had taught me as a child, finding it relaxing. Not today.

What was going on across the street?

I lived in a small cul-de-sac of only a handful of homes, a much-coveted location with great neighbors and an even better view. I’d bought Riverbend, my dream home, when I first made it big in the gaming software industry. The spacious lot and acres of riverfront were hard to come by in a city, even a small city, a relic of another age when elegance won out over greed.

Riverbend was my sanctuary, especially since I’d become a single divorced woman living alone. The manor-style limestone house was so huge even the helpful real estate agent had tried to talk me out of buying it, what with its six bedrooms, five bathrooms, and a swimming pool. Most people would think it far too large, but I loved it. One day every bedroom would be filled, they could mark my words. I’d been trying to get my sister Rose to move in with her children, but so far, no dice.

A ping on my cell phone riveted my attention away from the worry about the new neighbors and Rose’s situation, but spotting the number of my ex made me groan out loud.

Brad Bennett: Decided to take Andy on vaycay so you’re off the hook.

The happy face added at the end of the text was too much and I had to bite back the tears. The bastard. I had been counting on two weeks alone with my furry baby. The border cross collie had stolen my heart during our short-lived marriage. I missed Andy’s presence in my life more than my ex, ten to one.

Alex by Dianne Hartsock - Book Tour - Exclusive Excerpt - Giveaway - Enter Daily!

Alex
by Dianne Hartsock

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:    Psychological Thriller
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BOOK BLURB:

Alex is twenty and confused. He always is. The world presses on him with its horrors and pain, with scintillating auras that bewilder his eyes and drive the migraines deeper. He hears the cries of the children, sees the brutal images of tortured victims. He feels out of control and his mind slips…

Severely abused as a child, he is left with horrible scars on his body and even worse scars within his mind. Even though it puts him in danger, he’s compelled to help those who call to him. He’s driven, motivated by his visions to rescue them and hopefully uncover the killer. When he can, he helps the police; yet some detectives suspect he’s involved. Often, Alex finds himself alone and afraid in a world he doesn’t always understand.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT:
Ben drew up a chair beside him. “These are the people who have gone missing in the past four months.” He selected a photo of a man in his early thirties. “This is Robert Holmes. He’s the exception, disappearing last year in late July. But we have reason to believe his case is related.”
Alex studied the picture. He heard an anguished voice in his mind and knew Robert Holmes was the person he’d seen reflected in his own eyes last summer.
“Mary Sanderlin and Karen Ottoman went missing this spring,” Ben continued. “Stay-at-home moms who disappeared within hours of each other from the same park. Then there’s Kerry Franklyn, a high school math teacher.” He motioned to the picture of a young man with a pleasant smile. “You know about Mariam Kramer,” he went on at the last one, sounding tired. “She was walking home from the park but never made it.”
Alex picked up the girl’s picture. She was beautiful, with the same chestnut hair and gray eyes as her sister.
Helen gasped. “That’s how I see her in my dreams. Who could do this? She’s only eleven years old.”
“What are your dreams about?” Ben asked.
“It’s evening and Mariam’s running down an empty street. A man’s chasing her. It’s Alex.” she swallowed. “Only now I remember something else. A blackness looms over both of them.” Her voice dropped lower. “I think it means Alex will disappear next.”
Brad cleared his throat for attention. “Isn’t it just a dream?”
“Maybe. My sister and I are very close, and I almost always know when she’s in trouble. It’s a gift we share. Alex must have some of this same gift.”
She stared at him with a strange glitter in the depths of her eyes that was almost hypnotic. Unexpectedly, she reached over and grabbed his hands. He tried to jerk away, but she wouldn’t let go. He moaned as brutal images flooded his mind once again.
***
The man had been there with his groping hands, hurting her in the dark. She was lonely and frightened.
He was with the other one now.
She could hear the screams.
He was coming!
***
Alex yanked his hands away from Helen’s, scrambling to his feet. He backed against the nearest wall in terror, covering his eyes against the blood and despair on the tortured girl’s face. The odor of wet earth filled his nostrils even as it sealed Mariam’s mouth and crushed her still beating heart. He slipped into the darkness with her.
He came to himself with Jane’s arms around him, on the floor, dazed. Taking a desperate breath, he winced at the stab of pain in his chest. He sat up and rubbed his face, sick and dizzy.
Doctor Beckett let go of his wrist. “Take it easy. You fainted, but your pulse is strong.”
“Convenient,” Kramer muttered from where he leaned against the wall.
Ben crouched beside Alex. “Did you see them?”
AUTHOR BIO:
Dianne grew up in one of the older homes in the middle of Los Angeles, a place of hardwood floors and secret closets and back staircases. A house where ghosts lurk in the basement and the faces in the paintings watch you walk up the front stairs. Rooms where you keep the closet doors closed tight at night. It’s where her love of the mysterious and wonderful came from. Dianne is the author of m/m romance, paranormal/suspense, fantasy adventure, the occasional thriller, and anything else that comes to mind.
She now lives in the beautiful Willamette Valley of Oregon with her incredibly patient husband, who puts up with the endless hours she spends hunched over the keyboard letting her characters play. Dianne says Oregon’s raindrops are the perfect setting in which to write. There’s something about being cooped up in the house with a fire crackling on the hearth and a cup of hot coffee in her hands, which kindles her imagination.
Currently, Dianne works as a floral designer in a locally-owned gift shop. Which is the perfect job for her. When not writing, she can express herself through the rich colors and textures of flowers and foliage.
GENRE:   Psychological Thriller
BLURB:
Some Family Trees Should Be Burned. . .
Greer Girls are special. Greer Girls are rare. Greer Girls are central to the secret Order of Belial.
Sophie Greer knows none of this. All she knows is that her now ex-boyfriend cheated on her, she’s alone working in Paris, and her mysterious billionaire boss, Edward Hughes, is way too interested in her life.
But when Sophie is kidnapped in Moscow while on a business trip, she’s plunged into the dark underbelly of the global elite and a sinister secret society with deep ties to her family; ties that lead to revelations darker than anything Sophie could have imagined.
Betrayed by the man who raised her, and targeted by the illustrious Hughes family, only one thing is certain—family history can be deadly. If Sophie is to survive, she must decide who to trust and what to believe, or risk being crushed beneath the weight of the all-powerful secret Order of Belial.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT TWO:

After removing his weapons, the men bind Wyatt’s hands behind his back using a zip tie before gagging him. They’ve barely glanced in my direction, so focused are they on subduing Wyatt. Subtly, I attempt to take a few steps away from the group when, of course, Mr. Leader Guy decides to switch his attention to me.

“Where do ya think you’re going, little lady?” he asks.

I freeze but don’t respond. Seems like a rhetorical question, anyway. I look to Wyatt for support. He’s backed into the wall of the tunnel with the other two men guarding his flanks. Slipping Wyatt’s gun into the back of his waistband, the asshole in charge approaches me.

His breath, a sickly sweet halitosis, poorly masked with hints of spearmint, wafts into my nostrils when he speaks. “Don’t worry, sweetheart,” he says, coming closer, “the big, bad man can’t hurt you anymore.”

“Who are you?”

“Dante Pierce,” he says, holding out a gloved hand for me to shake, “pleased to meet ya.”

I refrain from taking his hand. This miffs him. Rolling his eyes, he addresses his men, “Seems to me our fair maiden isn’t feeling too appreciative about being rescued.” His men laugh awkwardly, exchanging nervous glances.

Dante Pierce doesn’t seem to notice. Returning his attention to me, he slowly removes his helmet and gloves. Never breaking eye contact, he drops them to his feet along with his rifle, and steps so close to me our noses practically touch. My bones rattle in their sockets as he looks me up and down in a predatory manner. By the time he completes his visual perusal of my body, I could take a hundred showers and it still wouldn’t be enough to wash off the scum from his gaze.

GUEST POST:

Fun & Fab Playlist for Daughter of Belial

A lot of writers enjoy listening to music when they write, but as an intuitive writer, I need silence. Occasionally I can listen to something instrumental, but for the most part, it’s necessary for me to focus all of my attention inward without any exterior distractions. Therefore, no one was more surprised than I when, toward the end of writing Book I of DAUGHTER OF BELIAL, I began creating a playlist to accompany it.

It started organically, with one song: Regina Spektor’s Après Moi, that felt like the major theme song for the main character, Sophie Greer. In Aprés Moi, Regina sings some of the lyrics in Russian and French—each of which are languages employed at various times in my novel! She also puts into musical form an old French proverb, “Après moi le déluge” which means, “After me comes the flood”.

I listened to this song on repeat as I was gearing up to write the final climax of the novel. I kept having visions of Sophie Greer storming across this massive expanse of lawn, a large manor in the background, with the wind whipping her hair into a frenzy and a fury of powerful energy surrounding her. It’s the moment in the story where all the bridges have been burned. The protagonist is completely alone and she must face what’s next or perish. She may perish anyway, but she’s determined to not only survive but conquer the secret patriarchal order that’s targeted her and so many others.

The lyrics “I must go on standing. You can’t break that which isn’t yours. I must go on standing. I’m not my own, it’s not my choice,” so perfectly encapsulated the feelings I sensed in the character in those final scenes. Feelings of being cornered between a rock and a hard place with no good choices available, surrounded by predators and liars. The feeling of having no one to rely on but yourself. It’s that do or die moment in the story that so many of us have perhaps experienced in our own lives.

I thought that might be it, one theme song for the book and done, but very quickly a second song appeared and then a third, and before I knew it I had thirteen songs to accompany the book. An auspicious number considering the significance in the story!

So, without further ado, I present to you the official playlist of Book I of my debut thriller, DAUGHTER OF BELIAL. The link above the list is to my Spotify playlist for the book. For your convenience, if you don’t have access to Spotify I’ve linked each individual song to its corresponding video on YouTube.

I highly recommend listening to the songs in order. I created the playlist as I was finishing the writing process whereby each song came to me intuitively and is listed in the order it was received.

Every one of these songs speaks to my heart and soul in some aspect or another. I hope you enjoy the playlist and that they’ll speak to you as well. I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!

EXCERPT ONE:

Smoke from the other vehicle’s engine fills the back seat. Coughing, I cover my nose and mouth as I desperately search for a solution. The whole right side of the vehicle is smashed in. There’s no getting out that way. I’m considering trying to break the back left window when I spy the dividing curtain swinging in the cool fall breeze.

Tugging the makeshift divider aside, I peek into the front to see the driver hunched over the steering wheel, unconscious. If I move carefully, I might be able to climb around him to get out the driver’s side. I’m about to make my move when the back door squawks open. A large gust of fresh air rushes into the banged-up vehicle. My head swivels to assess the new arrival.

No. It can’t be. A trillion queries rise and fall as I look upon my assailant—my savior? It’s too much. Between the plane ride, the abduction, and being left alone to rot for a week in a gaudy prison then carted out like a virgin for sacrifice, I’m spent. Where does it end?

There’s a popping sound as my mouth forms a tiny O in stunned surprise. Edward, looking like James Bond in a classic European-cut suit (probably Armani) and a light-grey dress shirt, unbuttoned at the top, is standing in the open doorway, hand outstretched in a gesture of chivalry as if these were the most natural circumstances under the Russian moon. I give him a blank stare.

“I told you I’d find you.” His silky voice floats past my ears, rattles around in my brain and down to my chest, where it nuzzles itself snugly into my heart.

If She Dies

by Erik Therme

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   Psychological Thriller
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Nine months ago, Tess’s five-year-old daughter was killed in a car accident. The driver, Brady Becker, was sentenced to two years in prison. It didn't make Tess’s pain go away.

Brady also has a daughter: A twelve-year-old named Eve who walks to Chandler Middle School every day. Tess knows this because she's been watching Eve for the last three weeks. It isn’t fair that Brady’s daughter gets to live, while Tess’s daughter does not.

When Eve goes missing, all eyes turn to Tess, who doesn’t have an alibi. But Tess isn’t guilty.

Or so she believes.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT ONE:
I slouch further into the driver’s seat as Eve exits her apartment complex across the street. Today, she’s wearing jean shorts, sandals, and a blue tank top; blonde hair pulled into a crooked ponytail, her electric-pink backpack secured firmly over both shoulders. Eve turned twelve a few weeks ago, and since that day, she walks the six blocks to and from Chandler Middle School alone. She’s a few minutes later today than yesterday, but last Friday she was so early I almost missed her leaving. That won’t happen again.
Eve stops just outside the complex doors and tilts her head upward. Her mother, Meg, is raining down an angry stream of words from the screen-less window one story above. I can’t make out what’s being said, but I do manage to catch a single word riding the mild May breeze: ungrateful. There was clearly an argument this morning, maybe about laundry that wasn’t folded, or unfinished homework, or a dishwasher that wasn’t unloaded, or one of a thousand other things a mother raising a twelve-year-old daughter alone can stress over.
But Eve is a trooper.
She patiently listens to every word with her head raised, not talking back, not crossing her arms, not reflecting her mother’s anger. I think to myself: what if today’s the day? What if something unthinkable happens to Eve this very morning and she’s never seen again? What would Meg do with that guilt? How would she live with herself, knowing her final words to her daughter were angry and bitter over something trivial and inconsequential?
