Swipe Right for Murder

GENRE:  New Adult Thriller

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
DATING IS TOUGH. ESPECIALLY IF THE GUY YOU LIKE MIGHT BE A SERIAL KILLER.
After a devastating heartbreak and a string of short-lived, failed relationships, college student Georgie Itoyama has now decided to approach dating in the same way that she approaches everything else: methodically, logically, and efficiently.
Georgie downloads countless dating apps, determined to find the love of her life as easily as she orders jeans online. And while her love-at-first-sight aspirations don’t exactly come true, she does find someone she likes. Quite a lot.
There’s only one problem. Girls are going missing at Georgie’s university, and all the signs are pointing to . . . him?
But that’s ridiculous. What are the chances that she’s dating an actual serial killer?
Then she matches with Nate. Mysterious, intelligent, and oddly fixated on solving the local disappearances. As Georgie’s relationships deepen with each of her guys, she unwittingly finds herself caught up in the mess that is murder, intrigue, and the nightmare of online dating.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT TWO:

“They found her body in a ditch. She’d been there for a couple days or so.” Shannon almost drops her precariously tall pile of books upon delivering this news to me. She shakes her head and starts shelving.

“That’s awful,” I say from a few shelves away where I’m trying to alphabetize the children’s section. Kids are not very good at putting books back from where they found them.

I’d heard the news this morning back at the dorms. I’d been in the bathroom doing my makeup with a few of the other girls on my hall, when the RA had come in and told us about it. Gossip spreads like wildfire at a small school, especially when it involves murder. I’d had a surprisingly numb reaction to it. Much like my reaction now. I keep expecting it to hit me. For me to feel sad, upset, afraid—anything. I actually only feel relief. Horrifyingly enough.

Relief that it wasn’t me who found her. That someone else gets to carry that trauma and not me.

“That’s your school, isn’t it?” Shannon asks.

“Yeah.” I think back to finding Whitney in the stairwell. The image is strangely void in my mind—I remember walking down the stairs, discussing bacon flavored cupcakes with Olivia, I remember the heels of my sneakers squeaking against the linoleum. And then it’s blank. I do remember the feeling though. The denial. The blood rushing in my eardrums, my heartrate accelerating before I even understood why.

“So creepy,” Shannon comments, almost to herself.

With a jolt, I remember what Miles had said at the froyo place a few nights ago. How some girl from Altmar had gone missing. He didn’t mention a name, probably didn’t know it, but I have the feeling it’s this same girl.

A part of me wants to think like Amelia did when Miles first mentioned it. This girl was probably caught up in the wrong crowd. She probably knew some nasty people, was maybe even involved in something illegal. Anything to curb the nagging fear that’s rising up inside of me. The fear that this could happen to anyone. That I could be next.

But I think back to Shannon’s ramblings from a few minutes ago. She’d been such a sweetheart. Her parents said she never partied, never did drugs, was a perfect student. Who would murder such a girl? This perfect, sweet girl.

But none of us are actually as good as we seem, I think.

GUEST POST:

Tell Us About Your Book Cover

I’m absolutely in love with my book cover, so I thought I’d talk a bit about how it came to be!

I’ve had so many compliments on the cover, and I’ve already recommended my designer to a few author friends who wanted something similar (her username is mitxeran on Fiverr, by the way).

I’m completely obsessed with the illustration-style book covers that are trendy right now. I think they are the cutest thing, and I knew I wanted something similar. The tough thing was meshing that cute, romantic style with thriller. I knew I wanted illustration, but I also knew I wanted it to convey the book in the best way possible—including all the creepy elements that come with it. I mean, the story is about a girl dating a potential serial killer, after all.

I had the hardest time finding a designer who could pull it off. There are tons of rom-com book designers out there, and tons of thriller book designers. But I wanted something in the middle, which felt hard to achieve.

Most of mitxeran’s previous designs were romance and contemporary books, but she was still willing to take on the challenge.

We went through a few different versions, including different illustrations, different colors, and different fonts. I always knew a phone had to be front and center somewhere on the cover. We started with a version where we saw more of the main character (Georgie) and less of the phone, but eventually settled with the phone screen as the focal point. It was actually my designer’s idea to come up with the two-faced dating app profile and the suggested right swipe icon. I think that and the muted colors really convey the murder mystery angle, while still keeping it light and very tongue-and-cheek.

I’m so happy with how it turned out, and I feel like it really exemplifies the story. I hope it translates to readers as well! And if you’re an author in need of a great designer, now you know where to go!

BLURB:

Breanna Casey has only ever wanted two things in life: to race and to get the hell out of Arkadia, Texas. Stifled beneath her family's turbo-charged reputation, she's got her thumb firmly on the self-destruct button. A night of hyper-driven racing and rebellion leads to a one night stand with the one guy who knows how to press all her buttons: Noah McKay.

Torn apart by the toll of his high-intensity enlistment in the Marines and guilt-ridden by what he's seen, Noah McKay left the military to find peace. A chance encounter sends him working for the parents of a raven-haired Amazon goddess with a tongue that cuts sharper than any knife. Quiet is the last thing he'll get.

Finally, she gets her chance. Calloway Racing wants her to drive for them. But that's not all they want. A good friend of her father's, Calloway insists she take Noah along for the ride. Suddenly, her dreams are feeling more like a nightmare. Will they be able to help each other, maybe even find love, when living life full tilt boogie?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT ONE:
“We had a job. We did it. It’s done,” he said with a gravelly undercurrent in his voice.
It wasn’t done. Whatever had been there had left a visible, emotional mark on Noah. How had I missed it before?
“That doesn’t change who you are, what makes you a good person. In fact, I’m betting some of the reasons you signed up was what makes you that guy.”
“You sound like my mom. When I couldn’t stand being at home, she understood. I left, quit taking all the pills, and drove until I couldn’t anymore. I stopped at a gas station and saw a delivery girl dropping off parts to the exhaust shop in the back.”
“Jessup’s?” There was only one exhaust shop that Dad did custom welding for.
“Yeah.”
And only one delivery girl. “Me?”
“Yup.”
He was full of surprises.
Come a Little Closer
by Chrissy Brown
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: New Adult Romance

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Sophie was the love of my life. Okay, we were twelve the last time I saw her but still. I've tried everything to move on—whiskey, women, weed. Nothing seemed to fill the void. Now, ten years later, she shows up out of the blue. The problem, I'm not the boy she used to know. I have a reputation that could ruin everything. Still, I have to try. Even if nothing happens between us, having Sophie in my life as a friend is better than not having her at all. Come A Little Closer is the second installment in the Georgia Boys Series. It can be read as a standalone novel.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT THREE:

I blush and shake my head. “We should get started on the bedroom.”

Kevin follows behind me, fiddling with his phone. I refill the paint tray and set it on the bedroom floor. Maroon 5’s “Girls Like You” starts playing. Kevin comes up behind me, puts his hands on my hips and begins to move them to the music. He presses against my back. My hands fall to my sides, and I tilt my head against his chest.

“This is not helping my walls get painted,” I whine.

“Come on, dance with me.” he pleads.

I turn around and stare into his eyes. It would be so easy to get lost in them but I can’t. I won’t. My hips stop moving, but Kevin’s still dancing. I raise the paintbrush that’s in my hand and slap him in the face with it. Slap sounds violent. It was more like I grazed him with cream colored paint while my hand slowly moved in front of his face. Kevin stops dancing. His jaw hangs open.

“Game on babe.”

That Guy and That Girl
by Natalia Albrite

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: New Adult Contemporary Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Olivia Meadows is excited to finish her senior year of college as a volleyball national champion beside her teammates and best friends. A complication arrives in the form of John Hunter, that guy, her brother’s best friend whom she has had a secret crush on since she was eleven years old. Effortlessly charming and handsome, with a body honed by years of playing football, John initiates his charm offensive and Olivia finds herself unable to resist him.

John Hunter is pumped to finish his senior year of college as a football national champion beside his teammate and best friend. The only thing missing is that girl, Olivia Meadows, his best friend’s little sister. He needed to sow some wild oats before settling down with Olivia but now he is ready for something serious with the girl he has always admired.

Be careful what you wish for. John and Olivia find themselves dealing with adult consequences very quickly and wondering if their young love can endure the pressures of adulthood. Will they find deeper love or implode from the pressures of their own making?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT TWO:
It feels like a secret magical place. No one else is around and I can’t even hear the usual sounds of campus from here. I jump in, “Can I go first?”
I’m really proud of what I’ve written and knowing how great Olivia is with words, I don’t want to follow her. “Of course,” she answers. I face her, take out my folded paper, and grab one of her hands. I take a moment to look at her. No rush. Everything else has been so fast that I’ve barely gotten to take it in. This, I want to remember and feel.
She squeezes my hand which reassures me that I’m not alone here. We are in this together. I take a deep breath and begin. “Olivia Meadows, I didn’t know it at the time but I’ve loved you since I was sixteen years old. You generously helped me with an English paper about The Age of Innocence and that was it for me.”
She jumps in, “I remember that.” I smile back.
“My turn here,” I remind her with a grin. She holds up her hands in surrender. We hold one hand again and I return to my paper, “As I was saying…what that study session did was create a need in me that could only be filled by you. I saw the book’s world through your eyes and realized that I had been missing so much. It also showed me that, through your eyes, everything is brighter, deeper, and more. I was a little too wild then to want to slow down but I’m not now.”
GUEST POST:
Six Photos of the Real Life Places Included in That Guy and That Girl
Hey there! I’m Natalia Albrite, first time romance author of That Guy and That Girl. It’s a new adult sports romance and if you’ve followed any of my previous posts you’ve already heard that the experiences of Olivia Meadows are very closely related to my own experiences. Close your eyes for the next paragraph if you’re already aware of this but pop back in for the paragraph after.
Like Olivia, I am biracial and struggled to make decisions about my future when I was a senior in college. Our obstacles were quite different but the inner struggles were very similar. Also, That Guy and That Girl is my gift to my twenty-two year old self whom I believe would have really loved bingeing this book all those years ago—waaayyy back in the 90s.
I want to share some behind the scenes stuff that I hope intrigues you and makes you want to check it out. I also hope by including some fun visuals, you’ll be that much more drawn in.
1.)  I protected the names of the innocent but I wasn’t too cryptic. In the book, Olivia and John’s university was called Texas University but I really based it on the home of the Longhorns—the one and only University of Texas at Austin, my own alma mater. Hook ‘em!
2.)  Olivia and her close friends, Tish and Laney, shared a great love for ice cream and they bonded repeatedly over consuming it. Amelia’s Ice Cream in the book is based on Amy’s Ice Creams, a locally famous spot. It definitely fits the whole “Keep Austin weird” vibe. My kids and I love a great Amy’s treat.
3.)  John and Marcus eat Philly cheesesteaks from their favorite joint, Philly Tex. This was based on the real-life Texadelphia from which I consumed more cheesesteaks than could ever be healthy. Back in the 90s, it was a much smaller spot but it has been franchised so you might have one in your hometown by now.
4.)  In the opening scenes of the book, Olivia and John lived in the dorm, Kippington. In real life, I was a resident advisor for three years at the all-girls dorm called Kinsolving. It was the perfect college job!
5.)  Until making this list, I’d forgotten that I didn’t ever change the name of Mount Bonnell! Oops, but I think I can get away with it. It’s a beautiful spot, I remember my first visit and it was very similar to what Olivia describes as her first feelings about it. It’s so magical and beautiful!
6.)  UT is a school that highly values its football legacy! I have to admit that I still get a thrill when I go to games and a shout-out to my uncle Rob who passes along his season tickets when he can’t make a game. Our football stadium holds over 100,000 fans and it gets exciting! Hook ‘em!
I hope you find all of this behind-the-scenes stuff intriguing and consider giving That Guy and That Girl a read. And, if you ever visit Austin, Texas, you’ve got some great, classic sites to check out!
Thanks for having me! I’ve had a blast sharing my memories and pictures of some of my favorite spots!
