What Remains After by Pauline J. Grabia - Book Tour - Book Blast - Giveaway - Enter Daily!

SOME STORIES DO NOT END WHEN THE DANGER PASSES.

Beth Clark has not returned to her hometown in decades, since the childhood she survived there nearly destroyed her.

When her estranged mother dies, Beth comes back to rural Alberta for a funeral that feels carefully rewritten. The eulogies are tidy. The past is sanitized. But inside the abandoned bungalow where she and her brother once lived, Beth finds objects that shatter the illusion—and awaken memories of abuse, neglect, and the systems that failed to protect her.

When Beth's younger brother is critically injured in a sudden accident, the present collides with the past. Keeping vigil at his hospital bedside, Beth is drawn back into the summer that changed everything: the violence in their home, the silence of those who should have intervened, and the foster family whose quiet faith offered the first real safety either child had known.

Told across dual timelines, What Remains After is a literary psychological suspense novel about trauma and memory, belief and betrayal, and the long, unfinished work of survival. It asks what it truly means to forgive—and what remains when the truth is finally spoken.

EXCERPT ONE:

Coverville Baptist Church smelled musty and old, like the memories trying to escape the recesses of Beth’s mind. That’s all that remained now of her mother. Like her life, nothing at the church had changed in over forty years. It had simply aged, with splintered oak pews and grubby carpets that had been there when she was growing up.

It was unnaturally quiet in the church, which she remembered used to almost roar after a service with the lively voices of congregants discussing the sermon or what was coming up in their week. Children used to run around, shrieking and squealing in both joy and frustration. Now, it was still. Eerily so.

Beth ignored the stares from the other mourners who had arrived early for the service. When she tried to meet their gazes to say hello, they looked briefly, with pity, before looking away. She stopped looking at people. She had only arrived when she had to so she could find Otto and talk to him before it started. He wasn’t in the lobby. Maybe he was in the sanctuary.

She waited in line at the guest registry, attended to by one of the funeral directors. When it was Beth’s turn, her hand trembled as she picked up the ridiculous feathered pen and hesitated before writing down her name. Should she use her married name or her maiden name? Her ex would have a conniption if she wrote down his, and she was changing her name back anyway, so she entered “Elizabeth Clark.”

When Beth had seen her mother’s obituary on Facebook, she’d realized that, despite her hesitation, she would go to the funeral. The only other attendees were townsfolk—mostly members of Virgie’s church—and family. She suspected that most came out of curiosity rather than grief. Beth’s reasons were less clear. Her hatred for her mother had lessened over the years, but had never completely gone; still, she felt an odd urge, almost a duty, to attend. She told herself it was just an excuse to see her brother, Otto, not the urn.

Padlocked by p.m. terrell - Book Tour - Guest Post - Giveaway - Enter Daily!

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. p.m. terrell will be awarding a $25 Amazon OR Barnes and Noble Gift Card (Winner's Choice!!!) to a randomly drawn winner. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Padlocked is an epic historical and visionary novel that follows the lives of a group of ordinary people who find themselves in extraordinary, life-altering circumstances as Nazi Germany invades Poland in 1939.

Two foreign photojournalists, an American and a Spaniard, are trapped between armies at Festungsfront Oder-Warthe-Bogen, along Poland’s western border with Germany. It is Hank’s last overseas assignment, and he’s been counting the days until he can go home to North Carolina to be with his family. Rafe fled Spain after the dictator, Francisco Franco, targeted his family. The experience changed him, and he now sees the rise of fascism in Europe as a battle between good and evil. They will find themselves embedded with the Polish, Nazi, and Soviet forces at varying times, forcing them to face moral and ethical decisions in their struggles to survive.

A young woman is separated from her sister in Warsaw as the Nazis encircle it. Agata made a vow that she would return to take Elsa to safety, but soldiers and barbed wire prevent her from entering the newly established Jewish sector. She is consumed with guilt over their separation, and when she discovers her sister was taken by train to a work camp near Krakow, she navigates her dangerous, war-torn country in search of her. Her quest will force her to confront a Hell on Earth to find her.

A young man joins the Jungdeutsche Partei, or the Young German Party. Once bullied as a child, Max’s new affiliations promote him to a position where he can dictate life or death and settle scores. In order to thrive under Nazi occupation, he makes daily choices that legitimize brutality and erode humanitarian principles and scruples.

While they don’t know one another at the start of their journeys, each will make decisions that have the power to transform them and place them on paths that ultimately converge on January 27, 1945, as the 60th Army of the First Ukrainian Front opened the gates to Auschwitz-Birkenau for all the world to witness.

This is ultimately a story about the strength of love, courage, faith, and resilience in the face of unimaginable hatred and obsession with power, and how every decision we make places us further along specific paths.
EXCERPT ONE:

Max was unprepared for the pandemonium as he stepped outside the building. He supposed it made sense as he could hear the voices from his office even if he hadn’t been able to make out the words. Still, it was jarring to see people who would normally walk with controlled purpose now rushing this way and that, as though the sky were falling. It made him hasten his steps, his heartbeat quickening as he joined the throngs. Many stopped along the way to cheer on the passing army vehicles, but he dodged around them, eager to get his book and get back to work. He didn’t want the soldiers to give his office to anyone else in his absence.

“Max! Max!”

At the sound of his name, he almost hid, thinking his ruse was discovered, but he quickly realized the voice was female. His eyes darted around the crowded faces. After a moment, the horde parted, and Stella rushed through to him.

“They’re on our doorstep!” she shouted excitedly. Her face was aglow, and he wanted nothing more than to scoop her into his arms and kiss her.

But, as others glanced their way, he grabbed her hand and led her to a quieter area. “Stop smiling,” he directed, swinging her around to face him.

“Why?” she demanded.

“They are not here yet. Do you want the Polish Army to pick you up?”

“Why would they? I have done nothing wrong.”

“Oh? Now that they are here and we are locked in a battle with them, you and I are collaborators.”

“Huh! That is not true.”

“Isn’t it?”

“It is not. We knew nothing of their plans to invade. We only know that we like their system of government.”

“And you don’t think they are here to change our system of government to their own?”

“Isn’t it exciting?”

“Stop it, I say. Stop it!” Max wiped his forehead. “What are you doing here, anyway?”

“The shop where I worked closed.”

“Closed? Why?”

Stella shrugged. “Excitement. Fear. Maybe a little of both.” She peered at him, her eyes narrowing. “Why are you here and not in the mayor’s office? I would have thought you’d be very busy there.”

“I am very busy.” He pulled at his suit jacket as if straightening it. “I have been promoted.”

“Promoted! To what?”

“I am now a liaison to the military.”

“The Polish military?”

“Do you see another here?” He waved his hand toward the tanks passing by them.

“What are you doing for them?” she breathed, her brow furrowing.

“English translation.”

“You don’t speak English!”

“How do you know that? I do, actually. And I am on a mission, and you are delaying me.”

“Be that way, then.” She pouted briefly before adding, “What will you do when the Nazis arrive in Będzin?”

“How do you know that they will?”

She shrugged. “I am hedging my bets.”

“For right this moment, today, I am a military liaison. That is all I know for now.” He waved as though pushing her away. “Now, go.”

As she started to leave him, he pulled her back into an embrace and kissed her. Startled, he thought she might pull away, but she didn’t. She leaned into him, her tongue flicking inside his mouth and her body pressing against him. She smelled of flowers and musk, and he held her more tightly as he inhaled her essence. Then she abruptly stepped back. “Call on me later,” she said, “when you are no longer working your military liaison shift.”

Then she was gone, as if she had never been there; her petite figure disappeared among the taller men and women crowding the sidewalk. He stared in the direction she’d gone, but when he didn’t spot her among the cluster of people, he turned back in the direction of home.

GUEST POST:

Describe Your Book Cover and How It Came About

Thank you so much for hosting me here today, and thank you for asking about my book cover!

In a world increasingly run by AI, I’m thrilled that my book cover is an actual, unretouched photograph taken by my favorite photographer, Willie Forde, of Ireland. The Northern Lights were particularly spectacular when he came across the Smiling Bess Gate, and he captured the lights beneath the arch and surrounding it.

It was exactly the otherworldly effect I needed for Padlocked. Padlocked is literary fiction blending elements of visionary and historical fiction, and the gate is significant because it represents the entrance to other dimensions. As some of the characters encounter it, it takes on different energy depending on how they lived their lives. The angel who appears beside the gate also varies, from a kind and supportive Celeste to Abaddon, the dark angel you never want to meet.

When each character reaches the gate, they discover their souls unlock the padlock. To pass through, they must revisit decisions they made from the perspective of those they affected. It makes us ponder whether we might make the same choices if we knew we would face our past in the afterlife.

BLURB:

What happens when your entire identity revolves around a way of life that is becoming obsolete?

In the 1920s, as Canada progresses through the Industrial Revolution, horses are still the rural engines of survival. As a child Adam lives this reality on his family's farm in the Ottawa Valley, planning to take over one day and have a family of his own. When his parents die during the Great Depression, nineteen-year-old Adam is disinherited in favour of his brother and is forced to move to the city to find work. Without a formal education his choices are few, yet he finds a place to use his horsemanship skills in the dwindling forces of the Canadian cavalry based near Montreal. There he finds pride in being a mounted soldier, and friendship with his fellow dragoons. But the cavalry units are mechanized by the beginning of World War Two, and when Adam is sent to Europe, he must abandon his equine partners for trucks and tanks. In the catastrophic experience of war, he will lose everything once again.

Broken in body and spirit, he returns to Canada where he must confront the question of survival in a world that doesn't seem to have a place for an injured soldier. Full of poetic reflections on what it means to work with horses, horse/man is a powerful story about a man searching for dignity and connection in the face of a rapidly shifting world.

EXCERPT ONE:

“Trot on, Jack! Git up, Pete! Git UP! Good.”

The driver called out orders and sounded gruff, even in praise. The reins slapped the broad chestnut backs lightly, then loosened. It was the end of May, and planting had finished. Today, they were going to town. Freed from their heavy collars and the deep wet soil, the horses danced down the dirt road, shaking their heads as they pushed through the harnesses. Their efforts were rewarded with an easy silence.

Seven-year-old Adam sat in the back of the wagon, his skinny legs anchoring the sacks and baskets his mother had given him for dry goods. He was small for his age but wiry and strong. His face was still childish, heart-shaped and snub-nosed, with sandy brown hair and eyes. His father, Ciaran, was alone on the front seat, driving the horses with his back to Adam. Adam was grateful for the rest.

The horses picked up speed, and Adam bounced from side to side on the planks. The percussion of the horses’ hooves and the squeak of the wagon on its struts was all he could hear. The wind from the wagon’s movement had a chill. He turned his head to face it, letting the tears from his watering eyes stream along his cheeks. He inhaled the sharpness of spring, undercut by the heaviness of soil and vegetation that was not quite yet alive. Travelling along, further details unfurled — the patches of mud in the potholes, the freshly tilled soil in the fields, the shades of green emerging from the ditches and the trees.

GUEST POST:

Describe the Book Cover for horse/man

The process of putting together the cover for my first novel was exciting and anxiety-provoking! The cover is the first point of contact for readers, and it gives them clues about what the novel is about, and whether they might like it. As a self-published novelist, I was very conscious of creating a cover that was attractive, even to the point of the reader not being able to tell that it wasn’t produced by a traditional publishing house.

However, I wasn’t all on my own. I worked with a self-publishing assist company named Tellwell, and they had a graphic designer who would put all the pieces together and help me with the vision. I did start with a fairly strong vision for the cover: something that would be elegant and clean, and contained a very specific image.

The imagery on the cover is a figure taken from ancient history: the Uffington White Horse. The Uffington White Horse is what’s called a prehistoric hill figure. The earth vas been carved out in the stylized figure of a horse and the trenches filled with white chalk. It’s at least three thousand years old and has been cared for ever since by the local community. It is a perfect symbol of the ancient world, and pulls out the historical setting. The pictographic nature of the horse, as opposed to a drawing or a photo, dials down some of the sentiment or romanticism that is often associated with horse-related novels.

The designer took my ideas and did a fantastic job, especially with the font and the colour scheme. In my head I had imagined the cover to be black and white, to bring out the Uffington White Horse and keep the contrast bold and sharp. The designer came back with the stunning marbled grey, with hints of blue in the text and imagery. It has the same contrast and clarity I had been envisioning, with the added depth of the marbling.

The font does a wonderful job of capturing the spirit of the manuscript: the serif font is a very classic style, but there are bumps and ridges on it, which mimic the lines of the Uffington White Horse, creating synergy between the text and image. The title itself is slightly unusual, without capital letters and with the forward slash in the middle. That presented some challenges with arranging the text around the image of the horse but seemed to resolve with a bit of time. That was actually one of the key parts of making sure the design was just right  - making sure that there was lots of time in-between revisions so that the eye could forget about the design and come to it with a fresh perspective each time.

Altogether, the cover came together beautifully. The responses from readers have been very positive and I’m so pleased to have it represent the novel.

BLURB:

Folks know 14-year-old Clare isn't normal, even for a tomboy. She runs too much, talks too little, carries a gun too often, and holds a grudge forever. Only her papa's job at the bank keeps gossip quiet. It's unwise to risk the cold anger of the man who knows everyone's secrets.

Clare feels prepared for everything from fire, to flood, to what her momma calls demon attacks. When her neighbor Esther kisses her, though, Clare has no ready script. Maybe she could write one, given time she doesn't have. At the moment of that first kiss, Esther's mom is bleeding out from a gunshot wound.

Clare can read the signs everyone else is determined to ignore. A murder was only the beginning. Esther needs protection, whether she wants it or not, and Clare won't abandon her friend just because things are hard.

Maybe one day she'll be forgiven for doing what's needed.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT TWO:
Instead of the library, I went to the local graveyard. There were older graveyards outside the city. I liked to run to them sometimes, when things were too noisy, but the one out back of the library was my favorite. There seemed like worse places to wait for the call to serve in the army of the Lord.
I went first to where Esther’s mom was buried. It wasn’t marked yet, but she was the only one who’d been buried in the last couple weeks so unless folks were digging up the graveyard for giggles, the spot where the grass was fresh laid and you could still see the turf lines must be hers. Esther didn’t seem to be hanging around, though. Probably it would have been suspicious if she had been haunting her mom’s grave.
That had been my only idea, but momma wasn’t expecting me back for a couple of hours, so I wandered around the graveyard reading the graves.
A few times, we’d gone to one of the worker graveyards, momma and me, and done some rubbings of the few gravestones there. Mostly those were just old stone bricks set on the ground. You couldn’t avoid stepping on people in that yard, so I wasn’t shy now about tramping on graves or anything, but I was trying to show some respect. Here, at least, there was a pretty good chance you could avoid stepping on a body’s grave if you followed the neat rows of stones and metal vases.
GUEST POST:
Bring on the boo’s!  Everyone loves to hate the villain!  Tell us all about this truly loathed character and the inspiration behind their development.
Not My Ruckus is a book that lives by its villains, and they’ve generated a lot of discussion among readers. Clare is our narrator, and readers are spoiled for choice of villain: Clare’s father, “Papa,” is so monstrous he never gets a name; her neighbor Gunnar is violent; her mother Iris is alternately violent and passive.
And readers absolutely loathe Iris. She’s far and away the most hated character. Without getting into spoiler territory (but do either read the content notes or heed the warning of one reader that “this book will mess you up”), what Iris does is objectively not as bad as either of the men.
The thing that makes Iris a great (that is, terrible) villain is that she’s not trying to be a villain. Her actions can’t be justified, but they can be understood as originating from Iris’s own weakness and bad judgement, rather than from any benefit that she obtains from them. Readers won’t forgive Papa or Gunnar, but they know that early. There’s never a sense that either of those characters will be better, nor that they have the capacity to be reformed. Iris, though, becomes sympathetic to some readers after they have grown to hate her. Or, as one reader wrote to me, “Damn you for making me care about Iris.”
I based Iris on my own mother (who died more than 30 years ago, so no mom’s feelings were harmed in the writing of this novel), with some elements highlighted and others ignored. Ultimately, many readers feel about Iris what Clare does: betrayed. The monstrosity is personal, and the personal is powerful. There’s a reason Dante reserved the deepest level of Hell not for murderers but for traitors.
The Girl from the Lighthouse
GENRE: Historical Literary Romance
BLURB:
The Girl From the Lighthouse tells the compelling story of Emma Dobbins.
Abandoned by her mother at an early age, she was raised by her father, a lighthouse keeper at Point Conception in California, where early on she discovers her artistic talent.  At the age of 17, Emma travels to Paris with a chaperone, to attend art school but is separated from the chaperone when the woman becomes ill. Emma arrives alone in Paris with no money, no language skills, and no friends. A chance meeting with a young working girl in the train station becomes her first Parisian friend.
The setting is Paris in the 1860s-70s, the start of the Belle Èpoque. France soon is involved in the Franco/Prussian War and the Commune Uprising; difficult times for Emma and all Frenchmen. Initially rejected by art schools, her determination keeps her moving toward her goal in the art world, where the Impressionists are starting to change the world. Frenchmen fall in love with her beautiful face and lustrous dark hair. Some wanted to paint her, others to court her, but either way, she does not abide by the rules they try to impose on her because she never learned them. She grows into an accomplished artist but never gives up her own principles... even when someone steals something precious to her and she fights to get it back.
The story is told in the first person, present tense, allowing the reader to enter the story and feel a part of it as it unfolds, sharing with Emma her highs and lows, loves and rejections, all focused in the art world of Paris.  The novel is filled with vivid characters, both fictional and real people, and the story unfolds gracefully from the 1870s until 1912, just prior to the start of WWI.
EXCERPT THREE:
The next morning, I go to the orchard with my easel and a canvas to capture the early light and the dew on the leaves of the apple trees. I set up the easel midway between two rows and concentrate on getting the perspective just right, as the trees appear to merge in the distance. It is delicate, tedious work, but the charcoal pencil I sketch with comes alive in my fingers, eagerly welcoming the challenge. In my mind's eye, I see myself in solitude on the bluff looking out at the headlands of the rugged California coastline merging into the mist.
"That is a very brilliant thing you have done to capture the complexity of the apple orchard fading into the distance," the voice over my shoulder says around mid-day.
When I look up, I see Lamar scrutinizing my morning's work. "The flowers are so delicate," I tell him, "So hard to get right. Tomorrow my challenge will be to reproduce in oil what I've sketched." I pause then ask, "How has your morning been, mon cher?" I wait for his reaction.
"Well enough, I suppose. I've read my mail and a couple of newspapers that came with it. What do you say we drive into the village for lunch? I'm ready."
"Can you wait just a few more minutes?"
"Ah, but Emma, I am hungry now."
GUEST POST:
My Favorite Scene in the Book
Emma Dobbin is a young American girl studying art in Paris, France in 1870, and trying to find her way in the Victorian era society. She regularly goes to the Lourve Museum to study and copy the masterpieces there and is befriended by Impressionist artist Berthe Morisot. They go to lunch together. Here are the scene and the picture Emma is studying:
Sitting on a bench in the Louvre Museum a month later, hunched over my sketching pad, I’m focusing on the masterpiece in front of me, oblivious to people walking up and down the marble-walled Grand Gallery. A Jacque-Louis David portrait of a reclining woman is in front of me, so elegant in its simplicity, yet so beguiling and mysterious, I can only stare at her, trying to imagine the thoughts going through her mind. I can’t help wonder if Madame Récamier had any of the same feelings I do while she was being painted.
I set pencil and pad down, after adding a final few strokes and turn to a friend who has just come by. “Ah, Bonjour, Mademoiselle Morisot. Pardonne-moi. I was lost and didn’t notice your approach.”
Bonjour Emma. I would be pleased to have you call me Berthe. I saw you and wanted to ask if you would join me for lunch.”
“Yes,” I tell her. “Yes, I would like that. I have done enough for today. Some days—like today—the work seems hard, and I get distracted. I haven’t seen you for some time, Berthe. It will be pleasant to catch up.”
Oui I have been with my family. If you are finished...”
Together we leave the museum, cross rue de Rivoli, and walk along the stone-canopied sidewalk to a café on the corner of rue Royale, across from the Place de la Concorde. We take an outdoor table. Berthe orders a meat and cheese plate, with a glass of wine, and a mushroom omelet for me.
“How is your work progressing?” She asks as we settle in.
“It’s been several months, and I still copy with pad and pencil, sometimes I try watercolors—I think I have learned a great deal, but I’m still not ready to try oils.”
“You should,” she encourages me. “David is a good artist for you to copy. His portraits are beautifully executed, especially the one of Madame Recamier you are working on. Portraits like that are the kind of commissions you are likely to get when you are ready.”
“How so?”
        “There is always demand for portraits of wives and children, and other women that are best done by women artists. You should also study some of Vigee Le Brun’s portraits.”
I study the wine in my glass, using the pause to consider Berthe’s recommendation. “I hope to paint landscapes one day,” I tell her.
“Difficult for a woman,” she replies. “Traveling alone to paint a landscape is often...” She pauses, “how do I say, looked down upon. There are not many buyers for the work of a woman landscape artist.”
“I want to be free to paint whatever I want.”
Berthe cuts a slice of cheese from the wedge on her plate and adds it to a piece of baguette before taking a sip from her glass. She looks at me with her doleful dark eyes the whole time. “That can be difficult,” she says at last. “Consider your decision carefully. It is easier for us to paint in a boudoir than side-by-side in a world with men.” She pauses again and picks at a piece of ham.
Feeling frustrated, and looking for a response that won’t offend my friend, I stab my fork at a mushroom. “It seems to me women in Paris have only limited freedom. Do you find it that way, Berthe?”
“I have never thought much about it, but yes, I do. It’s just the way life is for women. Both of my older sisters are married. I think they have more freedom than I do, but they still obey their husbands.” Setting her glass down, she adds quietly, “I hope to marry one day. Do you? But for now, marriage can wait.”
“I don’t know. I find some men quite charming, but others seem brutish and demanding. I want my freedom.” As I set my fork down, thinking about Leo and Frederic, my gaze wanders off to the Place de la Concorde, where there is a bustle of activity. “What is going on there, Berthe?”
“Tents. For the National Guard. Did you know the Emperor has declared war on Prussia?”
I’m stunned. “No, I did not. You say the National Guard has been called up?” I strain to see the activity across the boulevard.
“Louis Napoleon has mobilized the army and the National Guard. The Guard is camping over there for now. My father says they will all march off to the Rhine in the next day or two.”
“All of them?”
Oui. My father says Louis Napoleon has made a big mistake starting a war.”
“I have a friend in the Guard. Perhaps he is over there. Will you walk with me to look for him?”
“Oh no, Emma! It would not be proper for two young women to go walking alone among all those men.”
