Malketh and the Undead:

Raven, Romda and Ravai

Vol. II

by Dave Maruszewski

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   Middle Grade, Fantasy
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BOOK BLURB:

Raven, Romda and Ravai are settling into their new knightly duties well. With the Dark Beast defeated, their normal tasks almost seem mundane.

Amidst the boredom, Ravai asks, “Why does no one talk about villains from the past?”

Romda reasons, “What would be the point?”

There is a point. Even though villains may have been defeated in the past, they may still be around, waiting in the background ready to resurface once again.

Malketh has returned to the kingdom, but something is different about him this time. He is back with an entire army … an entire army of undead soldiers!

“Whether you want to read this aloud to your little one or let them explore this magical world on their own, parents can rest assured that this second installment in the Raven, Romda, and Ravai series will be a playful, whimsical addition to their bookshelves.”

~ The Book Review Directory

“… the squires are appealing characters, as is their comical banter.”

~ Blue Ink Review

A great story for the fantasy loving youth, this adventure will appeal to those who like action and humor in an easy reading environment.

EXCERPT ONE:

They keep going until they hear a large rumble.  A small mass of rocks fall to the ground.  The three look up and see a gigantic figurine of a man holding a giant emerald.  Romda puts her lantern up to the emerald, and the light refracts and bounces off the many faces such that the whole room is lit.  This brings relief to the three.

Unfortunately, they notice something else.  When the room comes up from the dark, Raven, Romda and Ravai notice all these eyes staring at them.  The undead are here.  The three are surrounded.

Perplexed, Raven, Romda and Ravai freeze.  They are scared.  However, the entire horde of undead does not approach them.  What is wrong with them?  What do they want?

At last, the undead begin to slowly stir.  They begin to walk slowly.  At first they seem to move in random directions.  Then, a pattern to their motion becomes apparent.  They move about, revealing an opening in their numbers in the shape of a small circle.  That opening reveals a hooded figure.  The hooded figure says…

GUEST POST:

Satisfying Ending?

I’m becoming outdated.  It’s true.  I like a happy ending.  However, with what you watch and read, it is clear that the industry does not favor that.  I think they feel that it has milieu of naiveté.

I get it.  Gray characters can be intriguing.  They can produce unexpected results.  They allow for plot twists to occur easier and with more surprise.

The problem that I have with gray characters is that they often become inconsistent.  A seeming villain turns into a hero.  Then, I wonder how it happened.  Didn’t this person kill someone on page thirty-seven?  Is it now justified, or do we just overlook it?  Many times it is hard to truly explain away the bad behavior of the past chapters.

The other problem comes from an occurrence I’d observed when I used to teach video game design.  In an open sandbox games, players have the freedom to do almost whatever they want.  It can be very inviting and give an atmosphere of creativity.  The problem is that there is no one to guide them.  So, left with their own devices, they meander.  No real conclusions happen.  Hence, a feeling of boredom would often overtake the players.

That is where I worry about today’s story telling.  Without an easy measuring stick to see who is good, bad or ugly, we might meander into making no judgments about how we feel about the ending situation. A book can be exquisitely written, with riveting character interaction and no knockout punch.  Many times, I can even be left with the feeling of “What just happened here?”  I shrug my shoulders and then move on to the next book.

by Jonathan J. Michael

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:  Epic Fantasy
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BOOK SERIES BLURB – BLOOD OF AZURE SERIES:

Four races with powers dictated by the seasons seek balance and prosperity. However, life instinctively primes itself for survival, and when one race commands the touch of death, all others fall in line. Tyranny plagues Azure as an immortal ruler governs the knowledge of the seasons and those wielding its power.

Four young protagonists, Stone, Jaymes, Goose, and Astor, each navigate their way to escape his shadow and reclaim their freedom. Simple ambitions for young souls. But little did they know, they would uncover the secrets the realm is built upon, and the unique talents they each carry. Their ignorance allows the knowledge of the seasons to escape into the world around them little by little, and with it, a power loosing anarchy upon the realm. A power most aren’t worthy of wielding. It is up to Stone and his companions to tame that power and reclaim the balance.

Four seasons to balance the land. Four sages to balance the life.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BOOK BLURB – SEASON OF SACRIFICE – BOOK ONE:
Courage is for the bold. It is not for Stone McLarin. He’s been in hiding for four seasons after being orphaned by the Taoiseach. He doesn’t care for the heroic antics of avenging his parent’s death or securing his freedom. He only desires one thing—to protect his sister’s life.
This proves challenging when his sister, Jaymes, possesses a rivaling power of decay to that of the tyrant ruler’s. She’s a threat to his dominance, and there will be no escaping his shadow.
When the Taoiseach manipulates his way into Jaymes’s life and steals her away, Stone has no choice but to follow. He must venture into the heart of the tyrant’s domain and figure out how to penetrate the impenetrable. And if he succeeds there, he will have to slay the most powerful man in Azure.
In a world ruled by decay, what chance does life stand?
Season of Sacrifice is part one of the Blood of Azure series—an epic fantasy full of grim encounters, heroic adventures, unique magic, and a captivating world to explore.
Author’s Note: Contains explicit language and some graphic descriptions.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BOOK BLURB – SEASON OF SUFFERING – BOOK TWO:

A villain in his own mind, Stone McLarin is labeled the hero for murdering a man.

Not only is Stone weighted down as a hero, but he’s idolized by the dominant religion, and he’s the sole protector of the knowledge of the ages. The pressure of the entire realm is on his shoulders.

Carib Reign, a shapeshifter building an army of immortals, plans to purge the Crimson Capital to find this hidden knowledge. His motive, to give the people of Azure the freedom they deserve.

With many adventures along the way, Stone will lead the charge to defend the Crimson Capital against the Immortal Army. Should he fail, anarchy is inevitable. Death for all Azure, a possibility.

Where there is life, death anticipates. But what if death is abandoned? Life will rebel.

Season of Suffering is part two of the Blood of Azure series—an epic fantasy with both light and dark hearts. You’ll experience many fantasy tropes, clashing swords, unique magic, fantastical beasts, and a wide range of Azure’s scenic terrain.

Author’s Note: Contains explicit language and some graphic descriptions.

EXCERPT ONE:

FROM SEASON OF SACRIFICE – BOOK ONE:

GOOSE

My heart beats heavier. I inhale and, with the back of my hand, brush a drop of sweat that has found its way down my forehead. I know what these tracks be-long to. But why now? Am I projecting my ambitions—to slay a Creature of the Night? I grab a handful of Everweed from the ground and reluctantly head in the direction of the trampled vegetation.

My experience with these beasts is nonexistent, but then again, there isn’t another who can claim otherwise. They’re the type of animal man stays far away from, which was the primary reason for choosing this location as a refuge. We chose to risk being mauled by the Creatures of the Night over the public execution we would have inevitably encountered by hiding in a small village. Some would consider us the biggest halfwits in all of Vedora, all of Azure even, for making the decision we made, but I know Harris Martelli personally, and the fact he is capable of persuading a strong-willed and morally sound man like my father to do what he did is far more threatening than any beast living in the wood.

GUEST POST:

Exploring the World of Azure

Azure is a realm of fantasy, dawned from a world of science. What does this mean? Let’s head to the flight chamber to take a ride on one of the raptors to find out.

Large ironwood doors swing outward as we step through the portal into the flight chamber. The ceiling is as high as ten buildings. Redwood pillars hold it up with large, open arches at the top, and a touch of foliage around the perches. A flag is raised, and in swoops a golden eagle more massive than a bison. A powerful gust of wind nearly knocks us to the ground as it touches down next to us. It will have to be a quick flight. Only a glimpse to see it all. We ride.

The Terrain

The raptor beats its wings as we climb to the open arches and out into the world of Azure. Ancient redwoods larger than a house dominate the forest surrounding the Crimson Capital. We climb for an eternity to get above them, and head south where we soar above a forest that is a collage of life—the Broken Forest. Rivers flow beneath us like a diluted red wine except where commerce is most abundant, in which the waters have garnished an opaque tint. Oceans are nonexistent. None can be seen. Only mountain ranges on all sides with great and small meandering rivers throughout the vast countryside. In the distance to the west, dark and ominous clouds rage with flashes of light and crashing booms. We refrain from getting too close and head north. An incredible plateau taller than the wood giants is portside with an immense red lake in the center—quite possibly the largest in Azure. To our right, crops are as far and wide as they’re needed to feed the land. Further to the north, snowcapped mountains devour the horizon. And looking up, Azure’s mother-terra hangs in the sky offering a red ambiance to the twilit sky.

The Science

We soar above the northern portion of the Scarlet River where it cuts through the Great Oak Forest and the Garnet Plains. Time—not measured by years, but by seasons—flows by at a rapid pace for the sake of this journey. The oaks below change from a vibrant green to an array of oranges and reds before they go dormant. Seasons rule the land.

Each race is determined by the season in which they were born. Not by color, stature, culture, or anything of the physical sense. And each of the four races harness a power of the seasonal sciences.

We drop down to get a closer look at the Garnet Plains. Wind presses into our cheeks. Lahyf—those born in Spring with the ability to heal—are seen sowing the fields. Sprhowt—those born in Summer with the gift of growth—follow behind the Lahyf to enhance growth of the crops. Famine is nonexistent in Azure because of these talents. Our golden eagle banks left, nearly tossing us, and circles around a giant oak in the field. Dihkai—those born in Autumn with the power of decay—hollow out the inside of the massive tree. And Hiberneyt—those born in Winter with the skill of dormancy—work by their side to reinforce and petrify the hollowed structure. The races of Azure wield the talents of the seasons and work together to manipulate the world around them. Crops flourish. Shelter is grown from wood giants. With the power of the seasons at their fingertips, their culture is prosperous and indefinite. Life on Azure lives in harmony. That is, until human nature steps over itself.

The Culture

Our golden eagle, named Ifera, heads east to the Crimson Capital. We dive between the large organic structures to witness the culture in the streets. Like an iron-age, the structures are massive, some reaching as tall as the trees, but they do so without iron. We fly past a unique building crafted from oak trees and topped with colorful wisps spewing from four towers and a central dome. Like the art of the renaissance era, except crafted from trees, flowers, and blown glass. It is the House of Seasons where they worship the deity, Susy. Zipping past the market and to the port where industry thrives, at the end of the piers arborcranes are rooted deep into the river. These living cranes transport goods from ship to land, powered by the talent of the Sprhowt race. We head back to the Academy where the flight chamber is housed, swiftly dive between the arches, and come to an abrupt, yet delicate landing. The golden eagle lowers itself and we stumble down its outstretched wing, back to where our feet belong.

There isn’t one era in human history to relate Azure to because, as you’ve witnessed, the people harness their own era. Azure thrives by and through the seasons. But at the helm of this culture is a tyrant. The knowledge of the world and its seasonal sciences are governed by the Taoiseach, a man of science who holds the power close. In a way, Azure is a dystopian world in disguise. The Taoiseach intentionally removed them from the height of civilization to gain control of their potential. The people are oppressed without realizing it, controlled by fear of the Dihkai, the most powerful race exploiting their touch of death.

And where they’re headed, an age of discovery and enlightenment, as a few rebels push to uncover Azure’s secrets. Welcome to Azure.

When I drive down the freeway, I often want to veer onto the backroads and head for the mountains. When I'm at an evening gathering, I'm eager to step outside and gaze at the stars. When I'm on a ferry, I'm at the guardrail staring into the depths wondering what kind of leviathans lurk below. I'm an explorer, and since I'm not on the next Crew Dragon headed for the ISS, fantasy novels let me have what I seek. I write to explore a world of wonder.

The Prince

The Prince Theo Saga Book Series

Book One

by Antony Soehner

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:  General / Epic Fantasy
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Destiny will always test the greatest of leaders.

Theo never imagined life outside the king’s castle. But when the queen’s funeral reveals the king’s true colors, Theo must rely on his sister, her allies, and his friends to get him to safety. With the help of mercenaries and the native tribes of the plains, Theo must learn to face his destiny and open his mind to the diverse world he’s been thrown into.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT TWO:
“There’s no time for this,” Alice clipped, “you two are leaving the castle and then you’re leaving the kingdom. Ashti will get you to your first waypoint. From there she’ll explain the rest.”
“Your Highness—”
Alice placed a hand on Oli’s cheek. “In another life—” she choked on her words and tried to smile through the tears pooling in her eyes. “In another life, maybe I could have kept you by my side. But our destinies now lie in different directions.”
Oli swallowed hard. “I will see you again, cross my heart,” he promised her.
“I will count the days until we see each other again,” Alice said through the knot in her throat. “Your duty is to my brother and your friend,” She shook her head and swallowed hard. “You need to go. Get him out of—”
Oli leaned over and planted a kiss on Alice’s lips. It was quick and subtle. As Oli pulled away, Alice followed, trying to hold the moment as it vanished too quickly.
“When I return, my princess,” Oli began as he started shuffling the prince towards Ashti, “we will finish this moment.”
Without another glance, Oli, Theo, and Ashti ducked into the other room and vanished.
Alice turned towards the door where the banging persisted. She raised her hand and the iron trimming glowed white once again. The doors burst open and four Knights tumbled onto the floor.
Alice dropped to her knees and began to weep.
GUEST POST:
My Favorite Scene in This Book…
My favorite scene comes during the third act of the book when everything that was once peaceful is shattered in a fiery battle. Theo and Rhan are returning from a private moment away from the celebrations only to find the camp asunder and in flames. The moment comes when Rhan is reunited with her father, Chief Ta’goda, in the heat of an intense battle.
It's a small and brief moment between bouts of chaos that I always felt really captured Ta’goda’s biggest strength. Not just his physical prowess but his ability to care and love those he holds closest to him while his own life is in danger. This scene drastically contrasts the early moments in act one between Theo and his own father. Ta’goda is meant to shatter Theo’s reality and open his eyes to the fact paternal love should come without conditions.
When creating and listening to the audiobook version, I always get a chill down my spine when my friend, narrator, and fellow author, Russell Archey, reads the line where Ta’goda begs his daughter to flee to safety. The drop and inflection he puts into that single line carries me and inspires me to write more heartfelt scenes that make readers feel.
Chapter 17: Man in the Mask
“You have a new duty,” Ta’goda swallowed. The chief’s eyes peered over his daughter’s shoulders and locked onto Theo. “I cannot leave our people and get the prince to the rivers—”
“I’m not leaving you here—”
“Rhan’takono, this is not the time to argue—”
“There is nothing to argue over! I’m fighting beside you—”
“I can’t—”
“I am to be chief one day! How can I stand before my people after running from this?”
“If you don’t go now, there won’t be a tribe for you to be chief of!” Ta’goda snapped. “This is not a command as your chief. I am begging you, as your father—” the words caught in the back of his throat, “please.”
EXCERPT TWO:
“We go.” Teibera padded to the mouth of the cave. “Meet cubs.”
He raised his head, ears back, closed his eyes and howled a message into the hills. Two white shapes flashed in the distance. The first to arrive shuddered to a halt on sight of the stranger. He was larger than she had ever imagined a wolf could be. Tall and strong, he panted from the race and sized her up with eyes of chestnut brown. His nose twitched to catch her scent.
“Ice, eldest son.”
With a flurry of leaves, a second snow-wolf appeared. Salazai’s heart stopped.
“Wow, you’re beautiful,” she whispered.
“Smallest daughter, Sapphire,” Teibera said proudly. Amber eyes, tipped with snow-white lashes, stared at Salazai. The young wolf’s face was as delicate as the seed puffs that floated in the air around her, her nose black and shiny with health. Her fur was white, only the ears laced with a fringe of gray.
She stared at Salazai and asked, “Our pack?” Salazai glanced at Teibera, who gave a short bark of acknowledgement.
“Yes, Sapphire, your pack,” Salazai said.
The snow-wolf padded forward and licked her legs. Salazai put out her hand, and Sapphire held it gently between her jaws. Salazai stayed calm. It seemed easy to give this animal the trust she begrudged her own people. The wolf released her hand, sniffed her clothes, and licked her face. With her finger, Salazai touched a mark that hung like a black teardrop beneath the snow-wolf‘s eye.
Teibera barked. “Sapphire small, pack rough. Teach fight. Heart of lion.”
GUEST POST:
Bring on the boo’s! Everyone loves to hate the villain!
There are three main villains in Lumina but the one who fascinates me the most is Jaldeen, Lord Cantrek, who is scribe to the Kuhlan King. Ostensibly a gentle man, his magic strips away the veneer of weakness to reveal the powerful sorcerer he truly is.
He is a complex man with a sarcastic bent. We know from the start he is a bit of a coward, not only terrified of the demon who owns him – which is fair enough – but also of Xeralith, the Black Dragon, and his master, the Kuhlan King.  Yet when the vampire bats attack in the desert he stands alone against them, though all around him are cringing in fear.
He’s a sneaky villain and a cynical one. He likes to hide who he really is or what he’s thinking. So he fools Salazai into believing he is her friend, and he even cons the king, hiding from him a death threat from the demon.
What makes him so evil? It’s not just that he sets his assassin to kill innocents or befriends Salazai knowing he will later murder her. The sheer nastiness of the man becomes clear when he forces Naldan to slice off a guard’s tongue. Then we have him torturing the kidnapped Chrystala, deceiving the bronzites, and finally setting out to massacre them with his army of monsters.
Despite this, he is one of my favourite characters to write. I have always enjoyed the dryness of a villain like Alan Rickman in Die Hard. Not that Jaldeen is quite so sexy! I also wanted to show the weakness that often underlies badness. It makes a contrast to the evilness of the king who never doubts himself or his right to do what he wants. Jaldeen is both victim and villain, trying in vain to control his masters while ruthlessly destroying any pawns in the game.
AUTHOR BIO:
I was raised in Kent, the garden of England, and lived in an Oast House whose round rooms were once used for drying hops. Must be why I’ve enjoyed a drink ever since!
At university, I fell in love with medieval French writing, discovered The Gormenghast Trilogy, and became hooked on fantasy.
I have sailed down the Yangste, survived an earthquake in Cairo, and picnicked in the Serengeti. My travels for work and pleasure have inspired my fantasy world. I now live in France with a naughty Australian Labradoodle, a jealous cat and a squash mad husband. Our two huskies, Ice and Sapphire, are sadly now gone but are transformed into wolves and immortalised in my book. Lumina is my debut novel and the first in a trilogy.
