Cargo of Bones by Z. Lindsey - Book Tour - Guest Post - Giveaway - Enter Daily!

Cargo of Bones
by Z. Lindsey

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   Fantasy
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BOOK BLURB:

Devil bureaucrat Essie Darkenchyl and her friends barely survived the jungle, but now they're going straight to Hell--AKA her hometown!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT ONE:
“What’s happening now?” Two Rabbit shouted.
“Looks like some kind of sheep,” Merritt said.
Essie’s eyes shot open.
“Sheep?” Two Rabbit asked.
She still couldn’t move. She was staring at the sky again. Purple storm clouds.
“Essie?” the doctor asked. “Are you awake? You hear me? You’re bleeding to death! For Aro’s sake, let down that shield or aura or whatever you’re projecting.”
He was just out of sight. They were all out of sight. Essie desperately tried to sit, but it only made the storm clouds choke in on her faster.
“Whoa!” Connie said. “Those are some mean sheep.”
“Sand sheep?” Boon asked.
Their voices made her head throb. She tried to follow, but couldn’t. It sounded like nonsense.
“By Aro—the sheep stepped on that guy’s crotch!” Merritt shouted. “Please don’t say we’re being rescued by sheep.”
“That’s if they don’t attack us, too,” Boon said.
“Holy Mother,” Two Rabbit said. “I’ve never seen a sheep spit like that.”
“Ohhhh.” Essie smiled as much as she could. “Llamas.”
Then she passed out.
GUEST POST:
When it comes to worldbuilding in fantasy novels, I often hear folks say they don’t know where to start. They’re not sure how to connect the neat ideas they have in their mind into a tangible world. As an anthropologist and a lover of the complexities of human cultures, I’ve thought a lot about how to create fictional cultures, and my answer may be surprising: Don’t start with the culture.
Instead, start with the characters. Understanding the story, you want to tell will help build the world. Understanding your character will help you understand your world better. If your character is a cynical young warrior who has seen too much bloodshed in her short life, what were the power structures like that allowed her to be so hurt? If your character is an immigrant gnome trying to start a shop in a bustling elf city, how do folks in the city view immigrants, and not just how do they view them, but what events led to them viewing immigrants that way?
If you build your world in relation to your characters, you’ll be less likely to fall into the trap of info-dumping. Character-focused worldbuilding means you understand the world close to your character better than the world far away. In turn, when you explore your world for your readers, you’ll reveal details that are relevant for the story and the character.
I always focus on my characters’ opinions about places they’re visiting. Answering these questions helps to build an organic world that doesn’t seem like a copy-pasted version of Middle-Earth or that sort of thing.
I also tend to shy away from too much research for my book. Organic knowledge is better. If you happen to be reading a neat book about, say, the ancient Egyptians, feel free to drop aspects of it into your fantasy novel. But researching ancient Egypt for your novel doesn’t always work out. That’s because the depth of information out there about subjects like ancient Egypt is far bigger than what you’ll ever need for a fantasy book. You won’t be an expert but a novice, and that will show up in your worldbuilding.
Rather, pluck from things you already know. Today, some folks critique the adage “write what you know” because fantasy is outlandish and unreal by its very nature. But don’t just write what you’ve experienced, but use all the knowledge you already have while writing. If you’ve read original Middle Ages Robin Hood stories, you haven’t met Robin Hood, but you sure know him, so he’d be a great candidate for your fiction.
My current novel, Cargo of Bones, takes place in an age of exploration-style world, with big sailing ships and shady quasi-governmental mercantile organizations. I picked that because that’s an era I’m familiar with. I wrote about the colonization of Yucatan for school, and while I do live in the area, a lot of what I know of that era is what I’ve read about. There aren’t a lot of pirates in Mexico today, but that doesn’t mean I don’t know a thing or two about pirates--enough to put them in my book, for sure.
Cargo of Bones finds the heroes in the desert. They have to go to the hometown of the main character, who’s based on my wife. So naturally, there are some elements of Laredo, Texas in there. I’ll spoil a big joke: Many people think Laredo is dangerous, thanks to false media narratives. But if you’ve lived there, especially before the recent arts explosion, you’d probably be more likely to call it boring. The city of devils in this book is similar. Despite their magical tasks, their daily life is fairly mundane.
But it is a fantasy book, right? I can do whatever I want, so there are also llamas. There are no llamas in Laredo, or at least not naturally. I’m sure one weird rancher has some llamas. But I was studying childhood in ancient Andean cultures while working on the book, and looking at cute llama sculptures. I wasn’t living in the Andes or anything, but I was already familiar enough with those cultures to imbue my fictional culture with some traits like chicha beer and pillowed stones without having to do outside research.
This doesn’t mean I never do research for my books. My Google search history is the typical author search history: “What do you call the bottom of a ship? What causes bioluminescence? How big is a Brigantine? Is an arrow in the lung fatal? What cute animals live in the desert?” But I don’t do comprehensive research for my books.
While writing, you might think, as I did, “Hey, the mountains these people live by feel pretty similar to the Andes; why don’t I stick some llamas here?” And once you’ve thought that, you might have to Google, “How far can a llama spit?” And I’m fine with that.
But if you decide to have an Incan-style fantasy world, so you watch a Nat Geo documentary about Andean people for reference, you may end up inserting harmful stereotypes or foolish-sounding misunderstandings into your work. I know the rallying cry of a certain type of fantasy writer is, “I can write what I want!” What they don’t realize is that stereotypes aren’t just offensive--they’re eye-rollingly dumb to the folks who recognize the stereotypes. Dumb is something writers typically don’t want to be called.
If you’re thinking, but I haven’t studied ancient cultures! What can I do? I’d say if you want to be a fantasy author, study some ancient cultures! Not because you need to, but because if you like reading fantasy, you’ll probably find info about ancient people interesting.
Even if you haven’t studied ancient cultures or visited ancient ruins, you’ve probably got some similar knowledge you can use. If you like to cook, make up the food culture you want to see. If you row, drop your characters in a city of canals. If you like to do makeup, describe how your main character’s makeup fits in with or defies cultural expectations. These are all examples of “writing what you know” in worldbuilding.
Red Kingdom by Rachel L. Demeter - Book Tour - Book Blast - Giveaway - Enter Daily!
This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Rachel Demeter will award a copy of the eBook for Beauty of the Beast, the first book of the series, to a randomly drawn winner. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.
Little Red Riding Hood reimagined with a dark and realistic twist.
Princess Blanchette’s world shatters when the Black Wolf tears apart her castle and everything she holds dear. All she clings to is the vow she made to her grandmother on her deathbed.
Hailed as the people’s champion, Sir Rowan Dietrich liberates the capital in a quest for vengeance. He takes Winslowe Castle with an army at his back and his wolf, Smoke, at his side.
United by a shared cause and powerful attraction, Rowan and Blanchette embark on a journey of self-discovery and redemption—a path filled with loss, transformation, and ultimately, the healing power of love.
Can Norland’s resplendent princess, with her captivating beauty and spirit, tame the fabled Black Wolf?
Inspired by the fairy tale Little Red Riding Hood, Red Kingdom is a passionate historical romance about the enduring quest for love and the longing for a world at harmony. It is a standalone novel.
EXCERPT TWO:
Rowan Dietrich, the Black Wolf of Norland, withdrew his sword from the back of the man’s head. The six other brigands slunk backward and fumbled for their weapons. The horses were going crazy at the sight and scent of the wolf Smoke—stomping their hooves, rearing up on powerful hind legs. Except for Sunbeam. He remained silent and still, blending into the dark canopy of trees.
From the corner of his eye, Rowan glanced at Blanchette; her dress was torn and dirty, and she fumbled in the dirt, struggling to rise to her feet.
Anger twisted inside him, red and hot.
I shall kill them all for this.
One brigand, greasy-haired and pockmarked, dashed at him from the left. Rowan swept his sword in an arc and felt the satisfying squelch of steel sliding through flesh, muscle, and tendon.
Movement from his peripheral vision. Blanchette rushed forward and retrieved the fallen axe. Rowan ran toward another brigand. The man staggered back, nocked an arrow, and let it fly.
It took Rowan in the forearm. Several moments passed before the pain struck him. Then he strode forward, a growl in his throat, as the bowman withdrew a second arrow from his quiver and nocked it again.
He raised to shoot—but Blanchette was there, bless the little idiot, both of her hands wielding the axe. She gave a war cry and swiped at the man’s midsection. The metal sank in deep, and then she pulled it free with another gut-wrenching cry.
The man crumpled and fell. Blanchette locked Rowan’s gaze. Dirt and blood speckled her face.
There were five more brigands. Smoke leaped at one of them, his snarl a thunderclap, his dagger-like teeth tearing into the man’s throat. Blood pumped from the gash and soaked Smoke’s muzzle. Then the wolf squared himself in front of Rowan and Blanchette, his fierce growl rising in the darkness.
The last three men backed away slowly, their eyes riveted on the wolf and his gore-stained snout. They turned and ran like bats escaping hell. Smoke pounced and wrapped his jaws around one of the men’s napes. He dug his fingers into the dirt and leaves, screaming for his mother, blood and flesh coming loose as Smoke worked at his neck until he was silent.
Rowan and Blanchette finished off the last two men.
Then she wandered into the clearing like a woman wading through a dream. The red riding cloak streamed behind her.
She stood like that for a long stretch of silence. Tears and blood and dirt covered her face.
She looked fierce. Primal. Breathtaking.
That tragic vision took his breath away.
Smoke threw back his blood-soaked muzzle and howled at the full moon. The eerie sound shivered through the night.
“I wouldn’t linger long, Your Grace,” Rowan spat as he glanced at the arrow sticking out of his forearm and the seven dead bodies. “There are wolves in these woods, and worse.”
EXCERPT ONE:
Loving You
Loving you is easy.
Your heart beats like
The midnight breeze,
Caressing the strings of my essence.
Loving you is easy.
Your smile tenderly
Invites reveries,
Exposing the chords of my mind.
Loving you is easy.
Your voice is like
Music to my inner ear,
And honey to my soul.
Loving you means completeness.
You answer the questions
Of my inner interactions.
You bless the seasons
Of my secret divinity.
God sent you to enlighten
The epiphany of my pen,
So that I can describe beauty
In words and thoughts,
And open the door to invisible realities.
Loving you makes me aware
Of my purpose in life.
Loving you brings me peace.
Loving you…
Loving you…
Is easy.
Skate Cute
A Sacreola Sweethearts Novel
Book One
by Melissa J. Roche
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE:  Contemporary Romance

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Kriss heads home to her small prairie town with 98% of an astrophysics PhD, a load of memories she’d rather not think about, and a survival plan: skate and graduate. Her plan doesn’t include the attention of a familiar admirer from the nearby fire station, one with an impressive physique, a hidden singing talent, and a smile dazzling enough to sweep her off her skates. Before she knows it, she’s falling for him—hard.
Chase has settled into the rhythms of his small-town firefighter routine, but he remembers Kriss from high school: the starry-eyed skater girl on her way out the door of his life. Now she’s back, just as gorgeous as ever, spinning around the next-door rink without a care in the world. Or so he thinks, until Kriss is targeted with mysterious acts of vandalism designed to derail her dreams. Can he help Kriss find the courage to stand up under the attacks and trust herself to love again?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT ONE:

He rounded the first corner at the far end of the field and snuck a glance back toward the rink just in time to watch Kriss’s long ponytail sail out behind her helmet with another tight spin. That one must not have gone quite as planned, because she stumbled a little and lurched sideways. But she recovered gracefully enough with a quick laugh a moment later, as if she enjoyed the thrill of almost wiping out on the concrete.

Yup. Gotta fall to get better. His ass knew as well as anyone else’s, after too many falls on that very same rink, shuffling his own inline skates and hockey stick around one of the goals in his spare time.

Too much of his spare time. But he wasn’t so bad on wheels himself, these days—MVP on the fire department’s informal team, crushing the police department’s lousy attempts at rivalry in the yearly Battle of the Badges tournament.

His high school self would die a thousand deaths before admitting it, but young Chase had taken up street hockey for a very… specific reason. Kriss had been just as badass on her skates all those years ago as a senior at Sacreola High, three years ahead of him. Hot, smart, and senior—and totally out of his league.

She had graduated and moved on without giving him so much as a second glance. But his newfound love for skating had stuck around long enough to turn him into a decent hockey player on the side. No harm done.

GUEST POST:

Science or Fiction? How Passion Brought My Career Full Circle

Ten-year-old me lay on my back on my water bed staring up at the speckled drop ceiling and dreaming of galaxies far, far away. Someday, I promised, I’ll learn as much about the stars as I possibly can.

What I really wanted was to take my lightsaber to a cantina somewhere and ride off into the double sunset, but, not seeing any such options and being a practical-minded girl, I chose the next best thing: a career as an astrophysicist. Nobody told me I couldn’t, so I went for it.

My passion for astronomy carried me through college and grad school, launching me along research paths toward a bright future. I blithely walked through doors I didn’t realize weren’t open for others, or hadn’t even existed decades before. I wasn’t blind to the challenges of life as a female scientist, but neither did I pay them much mind unless they got in my way.

What I did ignore, however, was that tiny voice inside my head. The one that hadn’t forgotten the original inspiration behind my academic frenzy. The one telling me to put away my targeting computer and focus on my feelings, study the curious urge that had catapulted me on the science track to begin with.

When I finally stopped to listen to that voice, I recognized it—the storyteller inside me.

I have always loved stories. As a child, my bookcases were packed with adventures (again, a treasure trove I didn’t realize wasn’t available to everyone), and my next imaginative journey was always just a few shelves away. My hunger for story is what brought me to the brink of my life decision in the first place, that fateful moment on my bed when I swung toward science without a second thought… forgetting that it was the fiction that had brought me there.

And now I come to the bittersweet moment in my current tale. The moment when my science research future fell through, and I landed, hard, on what was left of my career. Science ditched me, and it sucked. The academic train rattled on without a backward glance, dropping a PhD out the back window as a consolation prize, leaving this newly minted “doctor” in the dust.

But all was not lost. Along came Fiction, chuckling a little at my misfortune, picking me up and dusting me off and taking me home again. Home to a little moisture farm in the desert, where it all began.

You can write again, Fiction promised, and set about showing me how. And so I took my doctorate in one hand and my imagination in the other, and schemed and scribbled my way back into the world of science fiction.

How did I end up writing a contemporary small-town sweet romance? That’s a story for another day. But if you peek between the pages of Skate Cute, you might just find another whimsical astronomer girl chasing her imagination and her dreams, wherever they may take her.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
AUTHOR BIO:
Melissa received her first pair of black-and-hot-pink inline skates in fourth grade, a couple of years before she swore her life to the study of the stars (in a fit of sci-fi inspired passion). Two decades later, she has acquired several larger pairs of skates and an astronomy PhD, both of which tend to slip out from under her at the most inopportune moments. She enjoys skating and singing at the neighborhood rink in her small town in Colorado, where she lives with her husband, two boys, and a cozy lap cat. Only one of which is allowed to read her writing over her shoulder.
They kept to the shadows so no one would know they existed, and preyed on the nameless who no one would miss. Where did they come from, and who was protecting them? In a city that had seen every kind of savagery, they were something new, something more than murderous. And one woman, who had thought she had lost everything there was to lose in life, would soon find that nothing could possibly prepare her for what would come when she entered their world.
EXCERPT THREE:
The youngster nodded, looking somewhat relieved, though it was clear that he wouldn’t be sleeping well for a few nights.
“Do you think . . .” This one seemed to have a real issue with finishing sentences. “Do you think I’ll be called to testify?”
“Testify?”
“Yes, sir. If you catch the guy who . . .”
“I think you’ve missed something here, son. That old fellow wasn’t murdered.”
“He wasn’t? But what about all the . . .”
“Relax, kid. He obviously ran afoul of a wild dog who tore into him.”
Tony looked at them for a second, a panoply of emotions crossing that young face, disbelief first and foremost.
“Are you sure about that, sir? I mean, I grew up on a farm, and I’ve never seen any dog attack that looked like that.”
Gleason’s partner reached over and patted the kid on the shoulder.
“Don’t worry about it, son. We don’t get them often, but every now and then a stray animal makes its way in and does a number like this.”
“No, sir. I don’t think you followed me. I used to hunt all the time back home. And what I mean is I’ve never seen a single dog, or even a coyote, attack that looked that way.”
“Come again?”
The kid took a breath, obviously feeling a bit more sure of himself.
“What I meant was, whatever animal attacked that old man, it wasn’t only one. I’d lay money he was attacked by a pack.”
AUTHOR BIO:
Addiction to Poetry
GENRE: Poetry
BLURB:
This book is a compilation of all the poems I have written in my life. Each one comes from a very personal place within me. Some of the poems truly show me at my most fearful, sad, and lonely moments in my life, and others are examples of how I was feeling at a time when I was desperate and lost all hope.
Some are of love, hope, a general wonder or curiosity, and accomplishment, and others came from the experiences of people closest to me.
I have added a page that briefly describes where the inspiration for the poem(s) came from, to help better tell the story. For me, poems and writing became a personal outlet. They have given me a safe way to express my thoughts and feelings.
I hope you enjoy them. If they are at all relatable than that’s even better. I hope that those who read these, and identify with them, will see that no matter how rough life may seem at any given time, it can get better if you just keep going.
Although the poems within these pages may be a bit random and unorganized, as is my life sometimes, they are raw and real. They are as I wrote them at that time.
I want to thank everyone who has taken the time to read any or all of them, and I hope you enjoy them as much as I am sure my Mom will.
EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT:
Promise to my baby
I wrote the one below along time ago. We had just bought a new house, and in what became our workout room, there was a very small handprint on one of the walls. It wasn’t very noticeable, but I saw it while running on the treadmill one day. Anyway… this is what came to me. – Trev
I see your tiny fingers, and I see your little toes.
Your eyes are shut so tightly, but I see your little nose.
I see your little arms and hands, your little legs and feet.
I cannot see your heart, but I can feel it beat.
I see your little ears and lips, the
sparse hair on your head.
I cannot see your love, but I can feel it instead.
I watch you little baby, ‘cause you’re very special, see?
You’re a perfect little package that God has gifted me.
So I promise I will nurture you and give you all my love,
And I’ll care for you on earth for our Father up above.
