EXCERPT THREE:
Sebastian
caught Annaleah neatly in his arms, and encircled her in his wings, holding her
so close she felt she could melt right into him and together they would burn as
one being. Tears came to her then, spilling down her cheeks and falling onto
her breasts, a silver light coming from them as they fell. Sebastian opened his
wings then and placed a finger under her chin, tilting her head up to look into
his mirror eyes. As she saw herself in them, glowing and alive and beautiful,
it felt so very right. Sebastian wiped the tears from her eyes, slowly, gently
and with great care. His eyes never left hers as he bent his head down, until
right before the moment when he caught her lips with his, and everything in the
world ceased to exist but their kiss. In that sacred, glorious moment, as their
lips pressed together, she was pierced to her heart with all-consuming
adoration, and from behind her she felt a great motion, as if she had moved
something with a great weight on her back. Confused, and a bit shocked, she
broke the kiss, turning to see what was happening behind her.
Sebastian
laughed despite her apparent confusion and said, "Oh Annaleah my darling,
did you forget?"
Feeling
a bit betrayed by his laughter when he could plainly see her distress, Annaleah
asked, "Did I forget what?"
At
this Sebastian outstretched his magnificent wings to their full height and
length, blocking out the sky and the moon hanging therein.
"Your
wings Annaleah; you forgot you had wings."

Five Things to Do Before You Start Writing
Writing is serious business, and takes some preparation to
ensure that you can have an uninterrupted, productive session. For me, that
means I have a quiet space, and that I am not interrupted. Being a mother and a wife, as well as being a
mother to 4 indoor cats, means that the best I can do is to write when my
husband is at work, and my daughter is at school. I do my morning routine
first, so I don’t have to worry about having to stop because the drier has gone
off, or because the cats are crying to be fed.
I also make sure that I have a tall cup of sugared coffee
with my favorite flavored creamer of the moment at the ready. This to me, is essential. It prepares me
mentally to begin the process of writing, and helps to loosen my mind, and to
get ideas flowing. I find that having a routine helps to prepare me for when I
sit down and begin.
Once my routine is complete, and I am at my computer staring
at the blinking cursor on a blank page, I like to let my mind run free. This
means thinking of anything related to the subject I am trying to write about,
or anything that could possibly be tied to it. Sometimes I just write, even if
it has nothing to do with any assignment I have, as an exercise.
If I get stuck, which of course I will at some point, I find
that writing an email to a friend or family member, or journal entry helps me
immensely. Journals help me the most, because no one is going to read what I
write in the safety of my own personal writing space. I can write whatever pops
into my head, or I can write my deepest emotions and thoughts in their
entirety. Not only does this help awaken a sleepy or lazy muse, but it is also
highly cathartic. I suggest keeping a journal of some sort to every writer.
Dream journals too, are also amazingly helpful. Not only do they provide rich
fodder for stories, but the more you write in one, the more you find yourself
being able to not only recall your dreams easier, but also to be able to
control them. Lucid dreams are an amazing experience.
I also find researching whatever I am writing about can help
ideas to come as well. Some of my best ideas have come from doing this. I like
to keep notes about the more interesting aspects, and to ask an important
question about how it can be used in my story. The most important question to
ask yourself is “What if?” take that thought as far as it can go. If it works,
use it. If it is a little too farfetched, maybe sue the information you have
learned later on in the storyline.
This is what works for me, though I think every writer has a
method that works best for them. I hope every one of you who are aspiring
writers, find something that works well for you.

Heather was born into a military family, and has lived everywhere
from Mountain Home, Idaho, to a small town in England called Bloxham. She
eventually settled down In LaGrange, Georgia with her partner of 15 years,
Billy, her 7 year old daughter Makaylah, and her 4 indoor cats. She considers
herself first and foremost, a mother. She enjoys being a writer, a jeweler, a
glass artist, a painter, and avid crafter. It has been her life long dream to
publish a book, and she has lovingly worked on “The Otherling” in its various
stages for almost 3 years. Heather loves to read, mostly horror, fantasy and
