EXCERPT TWO:

Veronica

“Do you like to fly?” I ask him.

“I do now.”

My back is to his front so he doesn’t see my smile. I ask Rob if we can take a photo together and he agrees. I hold my phone out and snap a selfie of the two of us. Even without it, this is a moment I will always remember.

As the sun makes a slow descent the sky turns breathtaking shades of pink and gold.

“If only I had a glass of wine to accompany this relaxing ride my night would be complete,” I joke.

“Champagne toast is after we land.”

“Oh, I was kidding.”

“All part of the package,” Glenn says. As we soar with the clouds I glance over at Rob’s profile. He still wears the same serious expression but his posture seems relaxed. I wonder if he ever takes a moment to enjoy simple pleasures. My guess is no. He surprised me with this plan because it seems out of character. He doesn’t strike me as the type of man who makes large gestures or plans elaborate romantic evenings. It makes me realize I don’t know him at all. Or else he’s painting a picture of who he wants me to see: a workaholic who doesn’t have time for love. But it seems there is more to the man than he’s let on. For someone who claims not be a romantic, this is by far the most romantic date I’ve ever been on. And I suspect no date will be able to top this night—ever. Rob has set the bar high, which means there is that much further to fall.

Writing This Book Has Taught Me…

To be more open to trying new things. I’ve reached the point where I feel like I’ve been there, done that. I’ve become comfortable with the familiar. Nowadays that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Isn’t everyone trying to grasp onto the nostalgia of happier times? If you haven’t heard, 2021 is the year of the TV reboot. Saved by the Bell and Punky Brewster, anyone? And it’s no surprise people want to surround themselves with the comfort of a simpler time. But after writing this novel, I wonder if I’ve grown too complacent. I’ve never been an adventurous person. I’m the cautious one, the middle child who plays it, well, in the middle. Perhaps that’s why I love writing: it allows me to create characters who do things I wouldn’t normally do. They can push the boundaries I can’t.

In my newest release, Into the Fire, Veronica Clayton goes on a journey of self-discovery. As the daughter of a senator, she’s always been conscious about how her actions affect her family. Since a young age, her life has revolved around putting her father’s needs first. She could never make a decision without thinking about how it would appear to others. How it would impact him or his campaign. She perfected the art of small talk, being gracious, polite and poised. She knows how to evade a question she doesn’t want to answer, not to let her emotions reveal her true feelings, and to put aside her desires. Because the one time she pushed the boundaries it backfired, badly, and almost cost her family everything.

She hides—from herself and others. She doesn’t let anyone get to know the real Veronica—she’s not even certain who that is anymore. At twenty-nine years old, she’s never made a decision for herself. And she was OK with that. Until he came along. Rob Ashford is the one man who challenges her. Who stirs up memories of the adventurous girl she used to be who yearned for more. As they dive deeper into their relationship, Rob awakens parts of Veronica she had long since buried. He makes her realize her past doesn’t have to define her.

Veronica comes into her own because she’s willing to push past the fear. She tries new things, tests her boundaries, and listens to the inner voice she had silenced. She learns to put her trust in others, but more importantly, herself. I admire that about Veronica. She’s inspired me to be more open and less risk adverse. I’m starting small. I finally gave in and got a puppy, which is actually is a big thing in my book. It never seemed practical and I didn’t want the mess. The very idea pushed my comfort zone. But Daisy’s been a great addition to the family. And now I can’t imagine life without her. While there’s nothing wrong with playing it safe, as Rob reminded Veronica, “Without risk there is no reward. And I promise you, the reward will be well worth it.” In this case, it certainly is. 😊

“Dr. Whyte,” a guttural voice greeted her.

Her blood turned frigid and her stomach lurched as her heart thudded against her ribcage. As long as she lived, she would never forget that deep German accent—the voice of one of her captors nine years ago in Kenya.

The one that got away.

She was fairly certain Ivan Kleist would have only one reason for tracking her down: revenge.

Springing from the bench seat, she lashed a leg out into his gut. She saw a brief look of surprise on his pale face before she took off in a sprint.

Why now? Nine years he had waited.

The calculating killer had waited until she was out of the United States and away from Sean to corner her. She dashed in the direction of her hotel. Would she be safe in the lobby? In her room?

She slung her purse over her shoulder. Her phone was in the outer pocket, but she would have to slow down to make a call. Not happening. She would not slow until she reached the hotel.

Could she beat him to the hotel? His legs were longer, but she was ten years younger. But he probably hadn’t already logged twenty-six thousand steps for the day, as she had.

From her peripheral vision, Lillian saw an enormous object barreling toward her like a freight train. She barely had time to brace herself before Ivan plowed into her. She felt like she had been tackled by a linebacker. His large arms encircled her as she sailed to the ground. They rolled through the grass, her body encased by his.

He was so large he could probably crush the life out of her with his arms. She gasped for air. He wasn’t crushing her, but his grip was immobilizing.

Grunting, he hauled her to her feet. “Settle down, hase. Little white rabbit.”

Lillian, still dazed and sucking wind after her sprint, hardly put up a fight as he dragged her into an alley. Looking around frantically, her eyes couldn’t focus long enough to see anyone within shouting distance. She clawed at his large hand blocking her mouth from screaming.

Five Reasons You Should Read My Book

1. Perfectly timed thriller. In a world where nuclear weapons are wide spread and Korea is bomb testing (there's only one reason to test bombs), Gray Horizon fits right in. Have you seen the latest Mission Impossible? Yep. Small, portable nuclear weapons ... they can happen. Did you see Amazon Prime's Jack Ryan series? Not only were the character and script brilliant (loved the female infectious disease doctor), but biomedical warfare is a scary reality ... and I covered that ground in the Whyte Knight (2017).

2. We want heroines. Wonder Woman took the box office by storm. It was great entertainment and fed our craving for strong women in fiction. Aidan hurriedly finished his sandwich and chips, anxious to get back to the clinic to check on Casey, Frank’s warning notwithstanding.

Frank got the message. They swiftly locked up, climbed into the truck, and hustled back to the clinic. Oddly, the back of Aidan’s neck prickled like it always did when danger lurked nearby. He glanced over at Frank, but the man just looked grim again, seemingly as anxious to get back to Casey as Aidan was. He tossed off the weird prickling sensation as leftover adrenaline and nerves. Until he and Frank stepped into the clinic.

A barrel-chested, gray-haired law officer stood in the middle of the waiting room. The embroidered stitching over his pocket read, Sheriff Sam Watson. “You Aidan?” he asked.

He nodded, the neck-prickling expanded to full danger mode.

“What’s your last name?”

“Why?”

“I need to see some identification.”

“Why?” Aidan asked again.

He probably wouldn’t have been difficult if he didn’t have a crack team of lawyers in his back pocket, which was all his back pocket held at the moment since he’d gone and left his ID and wallet on the yacht.

“Because I asked,” Watson snarled.

Aidan didn’t care for the belligerent attitude. “It’s Doe,” he said, just to be stubborn.

The sheriff glowered. “Aidan . . . Doe, you’re under arrest for assault.”

Watson handcuffed him, read him his rights, and then marched him straight out the door to the waiting cruiser.

Aidan didn’t know which felt worse. Being arrested for the first time in his life or the look of anger and betrayal on Frank’s face.

BOOK REVIEW:

This book was such a fun, exciting, entertaining, enjoyable read!

This book was such a fantastic modern day take on the classic Cinderella fairytale story!

This book keeps you totally engaged from page one through the very last page! I honestly had a hard time putting this book down!

I really liked the main characters, Casey and Aidan. They were genuine, kind, and realistic. Casey was fierce and sassy, but also sweet, and kind-hearted. She was smart, beautiful, and caring. She had big dreams about getting to the big city, but put her Uncle, the man who raised her, first, by returning to Cypress Key after college to help him run his failing business. Aidan was handsome, rich, famous, and in need of a break from his regular crazy, busy – but glamourous lifestyle. Aidan just wanted to be a regular guy for once. He was charming, intelligent, charismatic, athletic, and accomplished. Yep - totally book boyfriend material and I fell hard for him lol!!

I really liked Casey and Aidan together! They were so adorable! Their silly, witty banter was beyond entertaining and led to many real LOL’s!! Plus, their chemistry was just off the charts!!! You could feel the passion leap off the pages!! It was obvious these two were meant to be together, whether they knew it or not lol!!

Unfortunately, Casey does not know about Aidan’s big financial status secret and the fact that he’s been lying to her everyday since they’ve met. This is definitely going to lead to some drama when she finally finds out. And can she forgive him??

I really enjoyed reading this book and totally had a smile on most of the time I was reading it! Furthermore, this book will definitely have you laughing-out-loud so probably not a good idea to read it at a library or class or work lol!

I loved that this book was a sports romance book! Two of my favorite things in a book! I loved all the sports excerpts which were fun and entertaining. Even if you’re not a golf fan, it’s not overwhelming or difficult to follow the sports references.

This book has a great storyline that flows, terrific writing style with detailed scenes, well-developed characters, is steady paced, and keeps you completely entertained through the last page.

There are a few exciting twists and turns and unexpected moments that will keep you guessing! But this book shouldn’t really be considered as a suspense/thriller book. However, it isn’t just a romance book either as this book deals with corruption, drug smuggling, vandalism, arson, suicide, murder, drug cartels, and so much more! This book has a lot to offer its readers and will totally keep you engaged!

I like that this book touches on many topics such as love, romance, friendship, hard life lessons, second chances, change, dedication, perseverance, growth, humor, deceit, deception, corruption, compassion, empathy, integrity, unity, determination, devotion, faith, hope, forgiveness, moving on, starting over, new beginnings, overcoming obstacles, and so much more!

This book is the third book in the Cinderella Romances Book Series. I had not read either of the books in this series before reading this book. I did not get lost or confused, so this book can be read as a standalone. However, there are many references to the previous book and the characters seem to overlap. However, since I liked this book, I would suggest getting in from the beginning and starting with book one, so you don’t miss anything.

All in all, I really enjoyed reading this book and would absolutely recommend this book to all contemporary romance readers!

EXCERPT THREE:

As I faded between my thoughts and Michael’s words, I noticed something different about him. You know how there are those scenes in movies where someone is talking, and you see their mouth moving, but you don’t hear the words? Only the thoughts in the protagonist’s head?

This was like that. “Why does he look so calm?” I asked myself. There was a peace about him I hadn’t seen before. He looked rested, he spoke vibrantly, and he had a certain tranquility about him. Maybe he only looked extra peaceful in contrast to my own worn-down spirit that day. I couldn’t help feeling, however, that between the two of us, Michael was the one who was truly living.

All of our society’s values and ideals screamed, “that can’t be!” How was it that in a time when Michael was broke, working at McDonald’s, and living with his parents, he seemed less anxious than I was? I was the one leading a growing company with plenty of access to cash and investors; I drove a car and he walked; I picked up our dinner tab; I was going to sleep in a nice downtown loft while he was headed to sleep in his childhood bedroom. By all measures, I was the one who should have felt inner peace. At the same time, as I watched him, I knew those things didn’t matter. The storm stirring inside me, juxtaposed against Michael’s calm, said so.
