EXCERPT TWO:

Mira

After throwing the fresh meat into the fenced compound, I plunked the bucket down on the cement. Though my job as the newest hire as a zoologist at the Vegas Zoo called for more administration duties than feeding ones, I liked to get out and stay in touch with the animals at least once a week To see if their habitat needed improving the old-fashioned way by observing them.

It was important to stay in touch with all aspects of running a zoo, not just fund raising, budgeting and public relations. My cell phone rang as the big cats began to prowl across the ground, headed for the chunks of food I’d tossed. They looked magnificent in the dying light, all sinew and tawny fur, casting long shadows. Animals I understood and respected, their nature controlled by instinct. No crime in that. But people—don’t even get me started.

I didn’t recognize the number when I tugged my phone out of my shorts and hoped it wasn’t another one of those calls, demanding repayment of my brother Evan’s drug debts. I didn’t have any more spare cash this month than last. And no way to contact him since he’d done a vanishing act a month ago, just like our father did before he was born.

My mother, who’d died last year and Deadbeat, the name I’d given to the guy I unfortunately shared DNA with, hadn’t even bothered to make it legal. I missed my mom terribly, but it was my brother I worried about, angry as I was at him for drop-kicking me under the bus…notwithstanding his note to say he would be back when the heat died down.

Funny, but drug dealers, much like loan sharks and other nefarious characters, don’t take no for an answer. The thought of more taint being added to our family name made me even more determined to make a name for myself. The dream of being listed in the hallowed halls of scientific discovery loomed large in my mind, pulled a little closer due to recent developments. No, make those incredible recent developments.

EXCERPT TWO:

The audience burst into huge applause, cheering and whistling. I hadn’t even recovered from the shock of watching all that pumping man flesh exhibiting the kind of strength that makes a woman’s knees weak when he changed direction. This guy really could bear a person away to the ends of the earth if he wanted to.

“I’ve been entranced by the magic of snow falling at midnight on the moors of the Highlands since I was a lad learning magic at the knee of my great-grandfather.” The stage lighting changed, revealing a starry Van Gogh sky with swirling stars and a pregnant moonscape. The mystical backdrop set off a sense of otherworldliness to his skin, anointing it with a bluish glow. The moment of ancient timelessness caused the audience to fall into rapt silence, their faces keen with interest.

“Let winter come.” He lifted his hands to the sky, standing in front of the mystical moon backdrop, as if praying. From his palms, crystals of pure white snow began to flow upward then slowly drift down to the stage, turning into a shower of golden stars around his feet. But instead of stopping in a couple of seconds like I’d seen other illusionists’ work do, it continued to flow from his hands until the air began to almost vibrate with an infinity of snowflakes glowing like diamonds in the haze of the bluish light. It collected around his feet until a flurry of glittery stars anointed the stage.

Ohs and ahs escaped the audience’s rounded mouths as the man directed the weather. How in the hell is he doing that? Before I could figure it out, he started a new trick.

“For my next act I need a volunteer.” He prowled to the side of the stage and looked down at the row I was sitting in, right up front and center. Don’t. You. Dare.

“Would the bonny lass with the lovely blonde hair and wee frown in the enchanting red dress please join me up on stage?” He gave a wicked smile that demonstrated his excellent dentistry and held out one huge hand with the super-bulging biceps toward me, beckoning me with his mesmerizing green eyes. I hesitated. “Or are you afraid of being hypnotized, thasgaidh?”

Hell no. Game on. And touché for the use of another Gaelic endearment term.

I smiled sweetly and rose, taking his hand. He swept me onto the stage in one graceful movement, my feet leaving the ground, his touch coursing through me like an electrical current.

“A chair for the lovely Esme Luceres,” he called out. An assistant scurried to do his bidding, bringing one forward.

“How did you know my name?” I asked with a scowl, tugging my hand free of his.

“Magic, Esme. Magic is in the air tonight. Trust me, and the world will offer up its riches.”

I snorted. “Yeah, right.”

Not to be dissuaded, he gestured at the chair and I plunked myself down. This could prove interesting. Like anyone could hypnotize me. Spookier entities than Lachlan had tried and failed in my Ghoststompers, Inc. business. All duly recorded for posterity.

“This is a special pendulum made from the golden mask of a long dead deity that was purported to live in Atlantis, the fabled isle, before it sank into the sea never to be seen again. It has hidden powers that open a channel into the brain, promising enlightenment and ancient wisdom.” He held the large golden disk up for the audience to observe, the odd marks that were engraved into the surface looking like rune symbols. “Do you like to dance?”

Ah-ha. “No.” I shook my head so hard I nearly gave myself a concussion. “I never dance, no time for it. And I’ve got two left feet,” I admitted.

“Keep your eye on the coin as it flows back and forth, Esme. See the past…let it come forward and bring forth its power. Back and forth, back and forth. Relax, relax…”

I duly tracked the gleaming coin with my eyes, finding it rather soothing. Something to focus on while this charlatan played his silly game.

“That’s right. Back and forth…”

Alan faces the biggest challenge of his life which Hana sums up with one decisive question:

EXCERPT ONE:

Alan stepped out of the hotel onto the still-busy street. The night air cooled his flushed skin. He took a deep breath and looked around. It was in a nondescript city neighborhood made up of multi-story buildings with commercial fronts. He didn’t recognize anything. Where am I?

He checked Hana’s phone for GPS or a map, but the display showed Enter your password. He had to find somebody to give him directions.

Spotting the illuminated sign of a convenience store, he headed down the street. In the light of the store window, he fished out the wallet and scanned the driver’s license again.

A man walked by, and Alan called out, “Hey, buddy!”

The man continued until he looked at him and stopped. “Hey, baby. What are you doing out so late? As if I need to ask.”

“Do you know where Charlton Street is?”

“If you invite me over, I may be able to help you.” The man grinned.

Alan frowned. What the hell had gotten into this guy? “Charlton Street. Tell me where Charlton Street is.”

The man ambled over and stood close. “Come on, sugar. How about being nice to a guy?” He reeked of alcohol.

“Oh, Christ,” Alan said. He stomped into the store. Behind the counter, a teenage boy flipped through a magazine. “Do you know where Charlton Street is?” Alan asked.

The boy raised his head and stared mesmerized. Alan snapped his fingers in front of the boy’s eyes. “Hey, you there. Where’s Charlton Street?”

The boy stammered, “This is Varick. Go out the door, turn right, and go down five blocks.” He stretched out his arm to point.

“Where’s East Seventy-Eighth Street?”

“That’s the Upper East Side. It’s miles from here.”

“Thanks.”

Alan started for the door, then stopped and gaped at the hand he had used to snap at the boy. He curled his fingers, then splayed them, looking at the long fingernails lacquered in bright red with little blue stars by the cuticles. He assumed the nails were fake, but he couldn’t tell. Then a surprising thought came to him: They were his fingernails.

He glanced up and saw a security mirror over the door. The teenage boy leaned over the counter to stare at his backside. He looked down. The skirt he wore was short, so he showed a lot of leg. No wonder the boy was checking him out. Checking him out? If he knew the truth, he would run for the hills. This was pushing cross-dressing to the limit.

AUTHOR BIO:

William Quincy Belle is just a guy. Nobody famous; nobody rich; just some guy who likes to periodically add his two cents worth with the hope, accounting for inflation, that $0.02 is not over evaluating his contribution. He claims that at the heart of the writing process is some sort of (psychotic) urge to put it down on paper and likes to recite the following, which so far he hasn't been able to attribute to anyone: "A writer is an egomaniac with low self-esteem." You will find Mr. Belle's unbridled stream of consciousness floating around in cyberspace.

An unknown assassin, working from within the system, attempts to seize control and declare himself dictator by methodically removing all rivals. Detective Matthew Heart of the Metropolitan Police must deal with his partner, a cyborg policewoman, his unofficial family, a transgender woman and her one-legged daughter, and a mysterious assailant bent on taking over the world by killing anyone who stands in his way.

EXCERPT TWO:

Alan and Terry were skinny enough to slip through the security perimeter into the antigravity zone. Already, they heard the pounding of the AG machines. Workers in the area often wore ear protection, as the constant noise could damage their hearing, but when one is young and foolish, protection is for wimps. They climbed down to the lowest scaffolding and looked out over the panorama below. The ground was a good kilometer down, speckled with the twinkling lights of the settlement. Each light was a potential target for a jump-and-grab, so tonight looked to be an excellent opportunity.

Rumors had been circulating around the high school for over a year about thrill seekers doing the unthinkable: bungee jumping from the metrofloat. Alan and Terry had pooled their money and bought the latest in equipment, including a controllable elasticized cable, a double-safety ankle harness, and a precision-positioning system with automatic height detection. The flexible anchor allowed them to set up the bungee in any location in record time, so they could get in, jump, and get out before the authorities knew they were violating restricted areas.

Alan would make the first attempt. He had decked himself with various tools attached to his belt and a helmet with a lamp. He had double-checked his ankle connectors and made sure the safety harness was in place. Terry gave him the once-over, enumerating each item out loud so they both knew they had checked everything. Alan climbed over the railing and held on as Terry fed out the cable so it was free and clear of the scaffolding.

Quivering with excitement, Alan looked over at his friend. Terry grinned and gave him a thumbs-up. Alan turned back to the open space, took a deep breath, and spread his arms out. He bent his knees and pushed off into a swan dive.

Alan had ten seconds of free fall before the cable slowed his descent — ten seconds of weightlessness as the wind whistled by his head. It was peaceful. And surreal. It wasn’t every day somebody jumped from a height of a thousand meters.

Looking toward the ground when he jumped, Alan twisted as he now fell, upside down, and brought his head up to look off into the distance. The light from his helmet flashed on something. He swept his head back and forth until the object was visible again. There was a human body three meters from him, free-falling at the same rate. It tumbled in the air. Judging by the looseness of the limbs, Alan guessed the person was unconscious. Or dead. Wouldn’t somebody falling to their death be thrashing about?
