Playing Rough
Perfection Saga Series
Book Three
by Beth Pellino-Dudzic

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BOOK BLURB:

Love. Lies. And the Road to Redemption.

After five months in rehab, Trevor McNaughton is finally sober—and ready to rebuild his life with Gina, the woman who never stopped believing in him. A road trip is meant to be their fresh start, but their plans are quickly derailed when their former publicist, Paul Ryan, emerges with explosive claims: an affair with Gina, dark secrets about their band Perfection, and vicious speculation about their marriage.

As the couple races to contain the fallout, the pressure mounts. Trevor must protect his fragile sobriety while defending the truth. Gina, fierce and unshakable, refuses to let their love be hijacked by lies. All the while, Gina’s cousin and bandmate Rio begs them to return home and help shape the next album—while wannabe rock star Brian Mayfield looms as another potential threat to the narrow threshold they already straddle.

With careers and reputations on the line, Trevor and Gina must confront the ghosts of their past and the chaos of their present. Can love outlast betrayal, and can anything silence a man set on destruction?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT THREE:
They pulled away from their Montecito home when Gina had a realization. “Trev, we know nothing about camping. The closest I can relate is the time my family had to stay at the Hyatt because the Ritz was full. We should stop at one of those huge camping and hunting stores and buy whatever we need.” Trevor agreed. They did some research and then drove to the nearest outdoor supply store.
A salesperson named Jonas recognized them. “What can I assist you with, McNaughtons?”
Gina stared at Jonas, then threw her hands up. “Everything ... We have no idea what is needed for an RV trip.” The knowledgeable employee gave them a checklist of necessities and camping equipment. Trevor and Gina trusted him to compile what was needed.
Jonas asked, “How long of a trip are you planning on taking?”
Trevor simply said, “Probably a month, maybe longer.” Jonas also asked if they had an itinerary and RV locations picked out and reserved. The two rockers looked at each other— who knew they needed to reserve a spot? He told them there was a book on RV parks that should help design their plan.
Trevor didn’t vocalize what the exact plan was.
So, Gina suggested hers. “Trevor, I would enjoy driving up the coast, California, Oregon, Washington. We can take in beautiful sights on the way and continue to Vancouver. We can explore a bit of British Columbia and visit your father … and I would like to drive to Boise.”
The Mark of the Unseen God by Benjamin Patterson - Book Tour - Guest Post - Giveaway - Enter Daily!
The Mark of the Unseen God
The Markulian Prophecies
Book Three
by Benjamin Patterson
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE:   Fantasy

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BOOK BLURB:
Look to the hills with dread: Salmmonaksa has arrived. His armies swarm like a plague of locusts. As the emperor prepares for his final assault, the Home City trembles. Overrun by desperate refugees, the monarchs have gathered to plot their defence. High King Eldilin is back at the helm, but there's no food and no answers.
Princess Kathryn has not given up hope. Lying on a cot in her room is the man destined to save the realm. They desperately need him, and for the prophecies to prove themselves true, but he will not wake no matter how much she prays. Even if he did, he cannot do it alone. Many more will die, that is certain.
The Mark of the Unseen God is the final instalment of the Markulian Prophecies, a refreshingly original tale set in a breathtaking medieval world. To rid realm of evil, everything will be required. There is no peace without sacrifice, and no love without loss. May who they are and what they have be enough.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT THREE:

The matching dark cloaks of these young risk-takers looked impressive but were a childish indulgence. They caught the eye, marked them as rebels. It would be better to dress plainly than to advertise how organised they were. If anyone saw them gathered so, they would know immediately they were more than a few disobedient scallywags out for a midnight adventure, but the ambassador kept his judgements to himself. Their fate was not his concern.

Instead, he turned, pretending he was hesitant to be split from his men. The truth was he was counting on it. After a pause, ensuring the youths noticed his reticence, he nodded. Taking their cue, his crew pushed the dandy back into the water and floated away. Six black-cloaked rebels led the ambassador up the beach, three in front, three behind. From there, a winding path appeared, cut into the mountainside. Stray fronds flicked against his ears. Loose rocks skittered over stone. As they ascended, the coastal air lost its heaviness, but the bugs became more relentless about his ears. The ambassador flicked them away. Such discomforts were familiar to Andreans, particularly those from Mourilyan.

At the top of the hill, he looked back. His boat was a darkened shadow amidst darker waters. If he did not know the boat was there, he would not have been able to make it out. All was quiet in the bay, for now.

‘Your dark clothing is a good choice. It will help conceal you as we traverse the ridges.’ The youth nearest him pointed to the ambassador’s cowl. ‘Is that how officials dress where you are from?’

The ambassador glanced his way to acknowledge the question but did not reply. Idle conversation would not benefit his cause. The less he said, the better.

Making the Story Believable: How to Write Realistic Fantasy

Fantasy is fantastical, which means many of the story elements are far-fetched, but that does not mean the story should be unbelievable. The key to writing realistic fantasy does not lie in explaining all the mechanics of your complex magic system, or providing comprehensive histories for every race, place and creature. Believability is found in your characters. If they behave reasonably, then your story will be believable. Let me explain using an illustration from the Matix Trilogy.

The first Matrix movie is an all-time great. Many incredible and unbelievable things happen and so much of the science fiction world is unexplained, but it does not matter. Why only three agents? How is the ship Nebuchadnezzar powered? How do the sentinels work? We could ask questions all day. In the end, the answers are inconsequential. The reason the story is so compelling is because the character reactions and behaviours are reasonable, given the situation they’re in. When Neo is found by Morpheus, he’s skeptical. When a bug comes out of his stomach, he’s freaked out. When the entire crew is chased by agents, they are scared. It’s all reasonable. Their reactions draw us in and we forget that most of the world’s backstory and mechanics are unexplained. Sure, the writers give us a basic outline. Guess what? It turns out a basic outline is enough. Because the characters feel real, the fantasy feels real.

The second Matrix movie is the complete opposite. It is set in the same world as the first one, yet nothing feels authentic even though there are no obvious plot holes and nothing about the world’s mechanics or backstory has changed. So why the deterioration in believability? Answer: the characters stop behaving and reacting reasonably. When Morpheus and Niobe survive a crash, they’re not freaked out (heck, they’re not even breathing hard), they crack jokes instead. Neo loses his eyes of wonder and confusion. He becomes weirdly quiet and difficult to understand. The whole move feels more like a corny action flick with slick one-liners and cliché reactions. None of the characters are believable anymore, therefore the fantasy is not believable anymore.
So, when writing, make your world as imaginative and crazy as you want. If there’s flying giraffes, that’s cool. Time goes backwards? Sure, why not. The audience will go with it if your characters behave reasonably. Explain their motivations. Reveal their thought process. Characters are the heart of realistic fantasy.

Benjamin Patterson lives in North Queensland, Australia with his wife and four children. When not writing, arguing with pilots or volunteering, he's battling a life-controlling addiction to sport, an addiction his poor wife has discovered is easily passed from father to sons.

The Mark of the Unseen God completes his first fantasy trilogy. He hopes you enjoyed reading it as much as he enjoyed writing it. Writing is not easy. Without the encouragement of friends and family, the series would never have made it to print.

Though the series has sold well, Benjamin remains about one million book sales short of his goal. Blood Prophecy: Queen's Ascension
by Barb Jones

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Paranormal
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

When the darkness was compelling and the heart knew no bounds, was there really a right choice? With Michael's life hanging in the balance, Amber had a choice: save her star-fated love or keep on the crusade to unite the magical community. For Amber, her fate was sealed even before her birth and it was her destiny to fight the great battle ahead of her. But, when it came to her heart — her friends, her great love — Amber's torn. Not only was she the Queen, but she was a human in every sense of the word. She was vulnerable. And so the very people — Chloe and Michael — that gave her strength, quickly became her weakness. It wasn't her fault she loved too much, was it?

Nevertheless, the Tall Dark Man had set a plan in motion that could threaten the very existence of the Blood Prophecy. Would he gather his dark forces and succeed in destroying Amber once and for all? Or, would she assemble her powerful friends and save the world?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT TWO:
One night when he was making his rounds in the forest to see if he could find any scraps tourists left behind when camping, he heard a soft whisper.
“Briar….”
He stilled at the sound of his name, and turned around to see no one or nothing in sight.
He was alone.
In the dark.
So, he crouched down and continued to shine the flashlight.
“…Hexham.”
He stopped once more and looked over his shoulder. His forehead crinkled with lines of confusion. “Hexham? Who the hell is Hexham?” His voice was thick with an English accent.
The bodiless voice laughed, and the closer he listened, the more definite the voice became. A woman’s voice spoke to him loud and clear, as if she were standing right in front having a conversation with him.
Briar’s voice quivered, partly from fear and partly from fascination. “Who are you? Where are you?”  He shined the flashlight but saw nothing. Complete darkness and trees, that was it.
The woman’s voice laughed mockingly in return. “Who I am is not important—for now. But I am everywhere and nowhere, all the same.”
As the voice spoke, Briar felt a sense of ease overwhelm his body. The fear and anxiety dissipated. For the first time in his life, he felt like he belonged, truly and deeply, just by the sound of her voice.
“You do belong. We are family, a family of witches. The most powerful to have walked the earth. We lost you, but now you are found.”
He looked out to no one in particular, but his shock was evident. “Witches? That’s ludicrous.”
GUEST POST:
Bring on the boo’s!  Everyone loves to hate the villain!  Tell us all about this truly loathed character and the inspiration behind their development.
I can’t believe I get to talk about the villains for once!  I am excited to talk about The Tall Dark Man (for once, it’s not about the heroes).  When I first began to write about the Evil forces in Queen’s Destiny, I wanted to find a way to make him a person that people would admire.  Knowing that sounds weird, let me explain a little about his role in the series. He needed to create a following of demons, hunters, witches and more that would battle Amber, Michael, Chloe and Marcus.  He needed charisma, appeal, a sexiness that would make him very attractive to those that would come under his power.  Since the first book, he became more and more integrated into the series a strong adversary.  But, how can I make him as such?
Simple.  I went back to my roots.  My Hawaiian Heritage.  I don’t get to talk about that side too much, probably because the other half of me is German/Jewish and that is just as fascinating to me due to World War II.  Let’s just say, it’s a fascinating family tree.  Anyway, one of the Hawaiian Gods is Milu.  I loved hearing his story as well as Madame Pele’s growing up.  But with Milu, he was the God of the Dead.  He could command spirit chasers who would trap ghosts and bring them to his afterlife world.  Because I was already fascinated with the supernatural world, I knew I could make the Tall Dark Man into one of my characters that would fit in with the series.  Milu also had a charisma about him and I created a charisma for The Tall Dark Man that would draw characters to be on his side.
When it comes to creating him, the real inspiration was going back to my roots.  My childhood memories of hearing the Hawaiian Legends and Myths.  I tried to honor that by creating the Tall Dark Man into something that everyone can relate to.  Milu, for example, is similar to Hades and we are all familiar with the story of Hades.  I wanted him to be someone we can relate to, whether we like him or hate him (because after all, he’s the villain!)
AUTHOR BIO:
I was born in Hawaii, a place rich with culture and storytellers. As a little girl, scary tales about vampires, werewolves, angels, demons, and witches were my favorite kind — much to my mother's dismay.
The scarier, the better.
My love for the supernatural never went away, even after moving to Seattle, far from Hawaii's majestic beaches with unusual colors. Nothing compares to the landscapes of Maui, Lanai, or Oahu. But somehow, Seattle stole my heart anyway. It became the place where my love for stories took on a new form, in a book of my own: The Adventures of Little Arthur and Merlin the Magnificent. This book is for kids who love stories, just like I did.
Then I had an idea while sleeping.
One night, my mind began to work overtime. In a dream, I saw a unique storyline involving all the races and an epic battle of good versus evil. It was a modern day plot with a three thousand year old prophecy, The Blood Prophecy. I finished the first book in 2014, The Queen's Destiny. Two years later, I released The Queen's Enemy. The last book in the series, The Queen's Ascension, released on August 17, 2020.
Today, I live in Florida with its beaches and sunshine. But I'm still a Seattle girl at heart. And so all my stories take place in the Northwest.
I always keep to my roots when I write.
Liar Liar
by Nancy Boyarsky
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Mystery

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Nicole Graves finds herself in the crosshairs when she reluctantly agrees to babysit a witness in a high-profile rape trial. Mary Ellen Barnes is suing her university’s star quarterback for rape when the authorities won’t act. In the court of public opinion, Mary Ellen appears to be the quintessential, pious, good girl. But her lies and mysterious comings and goings lead Nicole to suspect that she’s not what she seems.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT TWO:

Nicole heard a sound and came in from the balcony in time to see Mary Ellen, now fully dressed, slip out the front door. Nicole ran after her. She couldn’t allow the girl to run off after what she’d said about the hopelessness of her predicament. By the time Nicole got to the elevator bank, it was empty. The girl was already on her way down.

Nicole couldn’t take the stairs; she was on the tenth floor. But the elevator bank had four cars, and luck was with her. Moments later, the door to another elevator opened. When she reached the lobby, she caught sight of Mary Ellen through the window. She had just left the building and was jaywalking across Ocean Avenue toward the beach.

Nicole rushed after her. The wind was picking up, blowing through her jacket. She was halfway across the street, when a car heading south skidded to a stop a few feet away. The driver leaned on his horn and opened his window to scream at her. She ignored him, trying to keep Mary Ellen in sight. The girl seemed to be headed toward the shoreline. When Nicole reached the sand, she started running. She was in good shape, but running on the beach was completely different from a morning jog around the neighborhood. Her shoes sank into the soft surface, making it impossible to gain momentum. Meanwhile, sand leaked into her shoes, chafing her sockless feet.

The beach near the waterline was dark, and Mary Ellen was no longer in sight. Nicole looked desperately around, trying to figure out which way the girl had gone. All at once she stumbled over something lying in her path. As she hit the sand, the figure she’d tripped over slowly sat up, like a zombie in a horror film.

Deep End
by Kathleen Duhamel

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Contemporary Women's Fiction
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

After years of struggle and harsh criticism, happily married rock star wife Claire Martin has finally achieved the career success of her dreams. As the featured artist in an international traveling exhibit, she looks forward to her best year ever, while her husband, singer Robert Silver of the legendary band Deep Blue, contemplates a return to touring.

Things are also looking up for Claire’s best friend, Denise Hrivnak, who’s planning her wedding to Robert’s musical partner, Art Hoffman. However, what should have been most joyful day of Denise’s life turns to tragedy when an unexpected event forces both woman to contemplate the terrifying possibility of life without the men they love.

Besieged by the paparazzi and sick with worry, Claire waits for answers in a Las Vegas hotel room, thinking over her improbable relationship with Rob and praying that love alone is strong enough to bring her beloved husband back from the brink.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT THREE:
As we entered the room, Artie handed Rob a non-alcoholic beer and asked me, “What do you think?”
His pool table and pinball machines were gone. The area we were standing in, formerly known as Artie’s “toy room,” had been transformed into a dining space furnished with a sleek new table and seating for eight. A contemporary chandelier in a brushed silver finish hung overhead. A row of flickering votive candles marched down the length of the table, which was set for a party of four.
The only reminder of the room’s previous function was a display of seven vintage electric guitars hung on an exposed brick wall. Its centerpiece was a rare 1954 Fender Stratocaster with a sunburst finish. I was the one who suggested that Artie turn his collection into an art installation, now the apartment’s focal point.
“I think the room looks great,” I told him. “And I’m glad you kept the guitars on the wall. They say so much about who lives here.”
Artie ran one forefinger along the Strat’s distinctive curves.
“Well, I couldn’t bear to put the old girl back in her case,” he said.
Old girl? Uh-oh. Denise strolled into the kitchen, retrieved the unlit kitchen torch, returned, and pointed it in Artie’s direction, while struggling to keep a serious face.
“You realize 1954 was the year Claire and I were born, don’t you? Are you calling us old?”
“Rule of thumb, Artie,” I chimed in. “Don’t insult a woman who has the ability to burn you alive.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GUEST POST:

The character of Artie Hoffman-guitarist, songwriter, and half of the rock duo Deep Blue-didn’t even appear in the rough draft of my first book. He was an afterthought, created primarily as a wise-cracker who could bring some comic relief to the book. His character emerged almost immediately, though, and before long he was playing a prominent role in the plot. Who knew?

Being around Artie might get a little weird, but it would never be dull. I once described him as the male equivalent of me (except I’m not rich). He is unrelentingly sarcastic, completely uncensored, and unconcerned with what others think of him. He says provocative things that we’d all like to say at some point, and because he’s a rock star, he gets away with it.

 For instance, after Deep Blue performed at a marriage equality rally, he was asked by a CNN reporter if the band was becoming political.

“Oh, no,” he quipped. “We’ve always been pro-marriage. In fact, I’ve been married several times myself.”

His take on today’s pop stars: “Talent doesn’t matter. As long as you’ve got Auto Tune, a body that looks good naked and the willingness to whore yourself out, you can make money in the music business.”

He also made news after muttering “Funk this, America!” into his mic during a live, televised performance. His ad-libbed comment earned him the wrath of a certain loud-mouthed radio talk show host who said his words represented “another rip in the moral fabric of society.”

Artie found it all hilarious.

What I like most about Artie, however, is his willingness to change and adapt. Orphaned at a young age, he grew up as a lonely, distrustful foster child who was saved by his talent and love of music. Until he met Denise, an accomplished woman close to his own age, he’d been through a number of unsuccessful relationships. At first, Artie is dismayed when Denise doesn’t fall at his feet. They become friends, a new experience for him, and don’t get romantically involved until almost two years later.

In Deep End, he comes face to face with his own mortality, as well as his legacy as a musical artist, and emerges as a more compassionate person, something many of us aspire to be.
