EXCERPT ONE:

Sept 5

Well!  That was interesting.  My roommate invited me along to this frat party she was going to.  She went through something called rush week, and she is now pledged to a sorority.  She said the frats are less formal than the sororities, and even though I wasn’t a pledge I could go with her.  I figured, why not, it should be fun, right?

I got to meet the guy she’s chasing.  I couldn’t blame her for being interested.  He’s cute, and sweet, and considerate, and a total people-pleaser.  One of his parents must be the demanding sort who is never happy.

He introduced us to his friend… whose name is Darcy Fitzwilliam!  I wasn’t sure at first that the guy wasn’t just pulling our legs.

“Your mother obviously loves Jane Austen,” I laughed.

“Obviously,” he answered.  Not much to go by.

“I love Pride and Prejudice,” I continued.

“I hate Pride and Prejudice,” I can only describe the look he was giving me as hostile.

“I think you will find yourself very much in a minority,” I answered, returning his look with one of my own.

We didn’t talk any more that night.  Talk about getting off on the wrong foot!

Inspired by Headlines: How to Put Your Spin on Real Life Events

I absolutely adore fitting current events into my stories!

Usually, my books are historical fiction. Wealth and Privilege and Brains and Beauty are set in Pittsburgh between 1875 and 1889, I relied heavily on newspapers in the process of researching both books, and I use the current events I found to tell my readers where in time we are.

For example, the railroad riots of 1877 started in Pittsburgh on July 21. Garfield’s assassination in 1881. (July is clearly a good month for bad things happening. In January of 1885, the Liberty Bell really did pass through Pittsburgh on its way to the World’s Fair in New Orleans. When I needed to kill off a character, why just have some random fake accident, when there was the Washburn A mill explosion in Minneapolis? And of course I talk about the Johnstown flood.

These are all real events, in real time, and they tell my readers precisely what the date is, besides being the most awesome world-building. I learned this from Margaret Mitchell and Gone With the Wind: why make things up when my characters can be perpetually running for their lives through hair-raising real historical events?

I expanded this in Brains and Beauty to include events beyond the headlines: the heroine sings music from the latest Gilbert and Sullivan operetta. In both books, I frequently use clothing. What would a man’s reaction have been the first time he sees the radical change in women’s fashion in 1877, and for the first time in 50 years, skirts hugged along a woman’s hips and thighs?

My other modern novel, A Woman’s Persuasion, is sent in 2007. I chose the dates specifically because of current events. I used the crash of 2007 is a catalyst for the story, to mirror the financial troubles of the characters in Jane Austen’s Persuasion.

For Jane Lied to Me I had to very consciously make the opposite choices. Jane Austen’s stories are very timeless, in order to embrace that I wanted to say as little as possible about time and place, even as I emulated her trick of saying as little as possible about each character’s appearance. (What color ARE “fine eyes?”)

The story is about the all-American girl, set on an undefined college campus.

Is this campus in the Midwest? In the south? New York state? In Colorado? Arizona? Minnesota? I never discuss the landscape, or describe the buildings. This could be an Ivy League school, a little private school, or a big university sprawling across miles. I wanted people to be able to see their own college in their mind’s eye as they are reading.

This also applies to the time. All the markers I usually use to tell everyone when this is, I carefully avoided. I tried to stay as vague as I could about the clothing although I am taking a gamble of high heeled shoes are not going to go away anytime soon. When the characters go to concerts, it’s to hear Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, or a group with a long-running history (Metallica). My heroine has jobs at the school library and McDonald’s.

I do not bring up any current events. There are no news stories, no references to any events going on at all. I was trying to uncouple the story from a specific place in history.

I like to think, for the most part, I succeeded. The thing that is going to date most rapidly, and set it within a timeframe, is the technology. Phones and laptops change. At least, for now, people still use their phones to text back-and-forth, although I have had any number of conversations entirely over Snapchat, or Discord, or Messenger, or Marco Polo. So plain ol’ text may already be in danger of feeling dated. At least, for now, students still get online to register for classes, right?

As a lifelong book lover, I have an instinctive yen for libraries. As a child of the ‘60s and ‘70s, I grew up at a time when things were a little less restrictive for young people than they are these days. In my youth it was quite common, even in my town of two hundred thousand people, for kids to run around all over the place with minimal to no supervision.

For example, on Saturdays during good weather, we would often leave the house right after Saturday morning cartoons, have no idea where we were going or who we would hook up with and come back home in time for lunch before heading out again. Our parents didn’t know from hour to hour where we were, and everyone was basically fine with that.

In my case, although I lived in a residential neighborhood we had something that resembled a small strip mall about seven blocks away. And that little mall had a local library branch. From the time I was around six or seven, it was no big deal for me to tell my mother I was “going to the library” and out the door I went. Sometimes I would browse around in there for something to check out and take home, while other times I would snag a table and sit down to read for hours, especially on the weekend or during the summer.

At the time, to my young eyes, this little branch looked marvelously big with an unlimited number of books. In hindsight, it was only a little larger than a normal two-bedroom apartment. At the time, though, it was more than ample enough for me.

Immodest as it may sound, I was an early and prolific reader, and my mother often became exasperated with my going to the library. At first, she naturally assumed I would stick to the kids’ section, but that didn’t happen. When I was in second grade, I came home with 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne, for sure not a kid’s book. One day in third grade, I sauntered in the door with The Boy’s Sherlock Holmes, a two-inch thick hardback with a scarlet cover that contained all four of Doyle’s Holmes novels and a selection of the short stories.

At the time, I didn’t see the big deal with either of those. Looking back, I can understand her consternation.

One major discovery I made at our branch library, when I was around the age of twelve, occurred when I stumbled on a couple hardback copies of Saint books by Leslie Charteris. To say I was astonished is an understatement. From around six years old or so, I often watched The Saint TV show in the afternoons, often with my grandpa when I stayed over at his house. But I’d had no idea there were actually books about The Saint. To my twelve-year old mind, this was a major revelation, and one I dived into right away.

I moved away from our neighborhood when I was twenty-one and have only been back a few times since. The most recent was a few months ago, when I was back in my hometown taking care of things after my mother’s passing. I drove over to the little mall, which is still there, though of course none of the stores or businesses are the same. After all, almost forty years is a long time. The branch library is long gone as well with a small second-hand clothing store in its place, but even if it were still there, I’m sure it would look nothing like it did when I was a kid. The whole thing neither good nor bad, simply the way things are.

All is not lost, however. After all memories, sometimes, have more permanence than reality.

As I was about to glance back at the voices, a light flickered in my peripheral vision, drawing my gaze upward to the night sky. A soft white glow, high up in the dark. At first it was indistinguishable from the airway lights. But it persisted, the size of a small disk at first, before shifting to red-orange, getting larger. At that point I realized it definitely couldn’t be a hover car. This was farther up, probably low Earth orbit, which explained the initial white. But the shift in coloration—that meant a detonation, producing nitrogen dioxide, which turned deep orange when mixed with air. A gaseous cloud has reached the atmosphere, I thought. I was witnessing a chemical explosion in space large enough to be visible to the naked eye. But what was exploding?

As I continued looking up, the orange grew in intensity until it flared across the skyline, illuminating the entire landscape around me with an eerie red-orange. It was only then that I became aware of the newly hushed silence of the drunken revelers nearby. And the silhouettes of other people too, who had also stopped and peppered the pedestrian corridor. We were all now strange red creatures, watching transfixed in rapt silence as the night sky was on fire. And just as suddenly as it had appeared, it was gone; the orange light faded back into a deep well of pitch black.

Clarisse heard the creak of her door opening slightly and unaided. She had no way of knowing who was behind the door, as the room was dark, and only a speck of light filtered through the window from a solitary lamppost outside, barely enough to recognize the possible intruder.

She heard the moans from the breath of death as though someone was suffocating. She had heard it all before and knew what the end of life sounded like.

An unwelcoming sound of a dead spirit roamed the guesthouse corridors that had not crossed over—not an uncommon encounter in haunted places frequented with the souls of those long gone.

As the spirit raised the tempo of its moaning repertoire, she heard rapid footsteps outside the room, as though someone was running up and down the hallway, chasing shadows. A child perhaps? It made her think there was more than one spirit wanting to contact her.

While the evil chasm was invading her private space, the wind blew outside as a storm ravaged the monastic village. Rain droplets, the size of golf balls, pelted her window as the gust of wind tried to force its way inside. The clap of thunder in the distance only added to the surreal ambiance.

Although most people would have been terrified, Clarisse was not. She had seen it all before. It was how demons announced themselves, thinking they could get your attention through fear and take the upper hand. But not Clarisse; she knew their tactics and didn’t overreact to any spiritual encounter.

There was a scratching sound on the door, of metal and fingernails, which she considered unusual for a wooden frame. It was followed by the breath of the dark spirit forming its words. It echoed throughout her room, followed by a sigh. The spirit entity was trying to communicate with her.

Clarisse sat upright in bed, placing the European-style pillow on the bedside frame, and said, “I hear you, demon. What is it you want?”

“Your catharsis awaits you,” the demon replied. It took a deep shallow breath then repeated, “Catharsis ….”

The narrator has a strong, professional, confident voice and tells the story with an engaging tone.  The narrator’s voice is clear, concise, easy to understand and follow along with.  The narrator’s voice brought the story to life as she effortlessly transitioned between the different characters, the story line, and even across multiple languages.  The narration lasts six hours and forty minutes and is broken up across nineteen chapters plus a prologue.

I think my favorite thing about this book series and Norm Harris’s writing style is his cleverly crafted story lines filled with engaging plot points and surprising twists and turns!!

I truly appreciated the author’s well-researched and knowledgeable legal military writing style that felt authentic and accurate.

This audio book is Book Three of Five in the "Spider Green Mystery Book Series."  This book can be listened to as a standalone, however readers will gain a deeper appreciation and understanding of this book series if they read them in order.

All in all, I really enjoyed listening to this book and would absolutely recommend it!!  I think all mystery, suspense, thriller audio book readers, and legal military audio book fans will like this book too!!  So, add it to your TBR List and get to reading – you won’t be disappointed!!
