One I bought is titled The Golden Belt, and it was published by Beadle and Company in 1866. What a treasure! I can’t believe it’s held up this long. So I hope you enjoy Sheri and Brand, the half-breed scout, in Renegade’s Lady!

EXCERPT ONE:

Arizona Territory, 1878

“Hello,” Sherri said as a shiver of anticipation went up her spine. Brand was a magnificent specimen of manhood. Dressed in a loose-fitting shirt, buckskin breeches and moccasins, he was everything she’d imagined an untamed scout to be. She knew instantly he was going to be the man who saved her career.

Brand had thought it was going to be difficult dealing with a writer when he’d believed Sheridan St. John was a man, but now…a woman. His gaze raked over her insolently, missing nothing. She was beautiful and he felt a stirring of pure animal attraction for her, but he quickly dismissed it. She was an Eastern lady who didn’t know one end of a horse from another. She had no business being there. His job was to track renegades. He was going to look forward to putting her on a stage heading back East.

The look in his eyes was cold as he addressed her. “Miss St. John.”

Sherri saw the iciness in his regard and knew Brand wasn’t pleased to see her. Still, she wasn’t about to give up. Her career depended on it.

“I’ve been looking forward to meeting you. It isn’t often I get to meet a real live hero.”

“What can I do for you?” he asked, ignoring her remark. He’d been ordered to cooperate, but he didn’t have to like doing it.

“Well, first, I have to interview you. I need to learn everything there is to know about you and scouting.” Sheri’s mind was racing as she imagined Brand as the hero in her book. He was going to be magnificent – fighting, winning and rescuing damsels in distress.

EXCERPT ONE:

It was a hot late-August afternoon. Young Casey Turner had been out working with some hands from her family’s ranch, checking for strays since early morning. She’d ridden away from the men to look for stock along the river that marked the property line between the Bar T and the Donovan ranch, the Circle D.

Casey was hot and tired, and the water looking mighty inviting, but she couldn’t allow herself the luxury of taking a break. Times were hard on the Bar T. Money was tight. She had work to do. When she heard splashing around the bend just up ahead, she expected to find cattle. She rode quietly closer, not wanting to spook the strays.

Then she rounded the bend.

Casey’s eyes widened in shock and amazement at the scene before her, and she quickly reined in.

There, standing in the waist-deep water with his back to her, was none other than the Donovans’ son Michael, and he was—as best she could tell—skinny-dipping.

Michael hadn’t heard her approach, and she was glad. She’d never seen a naked man before. As embarrassed as she was curious, she took her time looking him over. His shoulders were broad and strongly muscled, and his waist was lean. Casey was grateful he was staying put, though, for she’d seen all of Michael Donovan she wanted to see.

Then she had a thought… The Donovans and the Turners had been feuding for years, and suddenly Casey realized this was the perfect time to take a little revenge on Michael.

The thought of getting even with him made Casey smile. The last time she’d seen him in town, he’d made fun of the way she was dressed. She hadn’t wanted to admit it at the time, but his comments had hurt her. Arrogant and rich Donovan that he was, he deserved what he was about to get as a payback for being so mean.

She smiled. Michael was unaware of her presence. She looked around to make sure he was alone. Her grin broadened when she saw his horse tied up nearby and his clothes hanging over a low tree limb. True, the clothes were on the Donovan side of the river, but that wasn’t going to stop her today…

EXCERPT TWO:

Chance didn’t know what had awakened him. He glanced around and noticed nothing out of order. It seemed Burr and Rori were both still asleep across the campsite. Relaxing his guard, he closed his eyes again, and it was then he heard something in the direction of the creek.

Chance knew he hadn’t imagined it. He slid his gun out of his holster and got up to make his way down to the water’s edge. He moved quietly, staying hidden in the brush. He could hear a slight splashing in the water. He wasn’t sure what he’d been expecting, but the sight of Rori taking a bath was the last thing he would have imagined. The whole situation would have been funny, if it didn’t make him feel like such a fool. He’d been ready to shoot whatever intruder he found there, and the intruder turned out to be the obstinate boy!

Chance wanted to throttle him. What the hell was he doing taking a bath?! The temptation to embarrass him was too great to pass up. The scrawny kid was standing totally naked with his back to him in waist-deep water. Chance knew if he moved quickly, he could take him by surprise and give him the scrubbing he well deserved.

Without another thought, he laid his gun aside and charged into the water, grabbing the boy by his shoulders. It occurred to him that the boy felt awfully soft and fragile, but he didn’t stop to think about it. He just picked him up and dunked him good.

Rori gave a small shriek of outrage as someone grabbed her from behind and pushed her underwater. For a moment she actually feared for her life, but the powerful hands that held her quickly released her and she surfaced sputtering mad.

“What the—?” she spat out in furious indignation as she came up and faced her attacker. She forgot she was naked. “YOU!”

“You’re lucky I didn’t shoot you!” Chase began laughing, but his laughter stopped abruptly as his gaze dropped from Rori’s outraged expression to the perfection of her breasts, bared now to his gaze in all their feminine glory. He froze.
