Shadowslayers: The Chronicles of the Charon by Colin Sephton - Book Tour - Guest Post - Giveaway - Enter Daily!

Shadowslayers:
The Chronicles of the Charon
by Colin Sephton

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   Steampunk Fantasy
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BOOK BLURB:

When doppelgangers start appearing in Oxford, Union Jack agents Ignatius and Indigo find themselves on another cosmic quest, one they didn’t set out to investigate.

Drawn into the search for the elusive and dangerous Book of Shadows, they find themselves traveling across the cosmos once again, racing against other versions of themselves, and visiting the Oracle to be given prophecies of terrible destruction that will engulf the cosmos in darkness. Only these two heroes—or their doubles—can open the book, which would lead to dreadful consequences for themselves, the world and the whole of creation.

The agents must outwit their own mirror souls and invade the impregnable Administorium, which holds the answers they need but also fearsome enemies of both the Union Jacks and the entire cosmos. In this quest, Ignatius and Indigo must protect not only England and the Empire, but the world and the cosmos.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT ONE:
As the shadowy figure moved from shelf to shelf, ornate gilt decoration caught what dim light there was on his grey-turquoise armour. Carvings of ancient scribes and tomes written to record the passing of aeons on many worlds across many planes. The books he tended were part of the vast repository of information that he had collected through his long lifetime. Books here took the form of sacred texts carved in clay, or written on scrolls of vellum, or even human skin. Enormous tooled leather-bound volumes with gilt pages or with golden clasps, some were chained and bound, their knowledge too dangerous to be shared or accessed by mere mortals. The shelves had been arranged by subject and ordered in a timeline for each category. There wasn’t any index system. The Librarian worked using only his memory, knowing each and every volume, regardless of when it was written or when it was obtained. Nothing was forgotten, his memory was a storehouse of wisdom and knowledge from across the cosmos.
With his brother and sister, they had probably gathered the entire history of the cosmos. From time to time, they would travel the astral planes in search of new knowledge and rendezvous every millennium to discuss and compare notes to set quests for each of them to fulfil in the search of even more ancient texts. Legend had it the three siblings were born of the Goddess of Wisdom and their father was a High Priest of the Ti-Botta.
Where Do You Find Inspiration?
I get my inspiration from a myriad of sources. I am never short of inspiration and ideas. I put this down to my wide range of interests. Since I was a teenager, I have always been interested in the unknown. Mysteries, strange phenomena, astronomy and mythology is what drives me to continue. I can write anywhere because I do a lot of my writing either on an iPad or by hand in a notebook. The notebook is also where I keep a lot of my ideas and research. I am able to do this anywhere, in coffee shops, hotels, even the beach or around a pool. I then edit all of this on a laptop in my study. This is where most of my inspiration lies. I am surrounded by bookshelves of fantasy books; my favourite authors being Michael Moorcock and Robert E Howard. These shelves also contain lots of Marvel graphic novels, science / astronomy books, art books, philosophy books, lots of notebooks and sketchbooks, and lots of curios gathered over a long time. I have prayer wheels, singing bowls, comic figurines, meteorites, Buddhist and Hindu statues. I draw all my ideas from these. I find it really relaxing to thumb through my books, especially the art books. These are for traditional artists like Monet, Turner, Constable or Da Vinci, but I also have fantasy art books by Frank Frazetta, Boris Vallejo, Roger Dean, and others. I use these for my own art and sometimes find it easier to paint a character before I use him / her in my writing. My artwork helps me to visualise a character so I can describe them in detail in my novels. I am a very visual person and I think that probably comes across in my writing.
The Chronicles of the Charon Series
by Colin Sephton
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE:   Steampunk Adventure Mystery

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BOOK BLURB:
In a Steampunk Oxford, Ignatius and Indigo are both agents for the Union Jacks, a secret organisation. The role of the Union is to protect the British Empire, which is at the height of its powers, and help in its technological advances. They have discovered the existence of the mystical Book of Consciousness written by the creator of the cosmos, the genderless Omnisoul. The book is the history of everything that is, that has been and that will be. The agents are aided by Skye, who accidentally calls forth seven merciless immortals called the Charon.
Known as the Beautiful and the Damned, the Charon are the Infernal Dukes of Hell, created to carry out the will of the Omisoul. But they are tired of their immortality and want to end their existence. Elsewhere, the sorcerer Ragnar of Roc has conjured a hole in spacetime, allowing the draconic Elder God Calabi Ya to re-enter the cosmos from the Ghost Worlds. He is as old as the Omnisoul and wants the book to learn his destiny. The two Union Jacks leave Oxford and are taken on a journey across the cosmos in the great ship Taraka, which sails through space and time. Ignatius and Indigo are mere pawns in the cosmic ocean of fate, carried to fabled places, witness to bloody massacres, and half-willing conspirators in the Charon’s plot to thwart the Omnisoul’s plan and defeat the protectors of the Well at the Centre of Time.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT TWO:

Glancing around cautiously, Ignatius could see that nobody else in the library had moved, gestured or even looked. He looked back at the book he was reading. He had to concentrate on the unfamiliar text to translate with any accuracy. Its author, Enoch Slipnot, had an unsteady hand, and the inks was faded in places. As he read the next section, his right hand began to tingle, a slight burning sensation.

It came through the Land of the Duranki. Those trained in the art of Al Kimiya brought forth sentient life, the fiery whirlwind that passes like lightning through the fiery clouds, believing they could master this Unholy Great One.

I have read of the great horrors the Unholy One brought forth, seeking the emerald tablet thought to have been hidden in the library of the Mystorium by the Order of the Ti-Botta. If this great red shadow should discover the sword of great power, he will wreak destruction on a cosmic scale and the whole cosmos shall tremble at his feet. The great runesword has been forged with an edge keen enough that it may even cut through the aether. Only a being in harmony with the cosmos can make use of such a weapon and with the Great Book, Turiya and the power of the Charon, summoned by the High Priest, stop the Unholy One.

I am unswerving in my task as the last remaining warrior-priest of the Charon – the Dragon- slayers of the Ecclesiarchy…

GUEST POST:

My Favorite Memories Spent at the Local Library

I have very fond memories of my time spent alone at the library. It was just around the corner from my gran’s house. Maybe I lived my early years with my head in the clouds, I don’t know, but all of what I read helped shape my young mind and gave me an escape and a means to create my own worlds in my head. I was always interested in the stars and planets. I do recall that for some time I wanted to be an astronaut when I grew up and changed my mind at the age of seven for fear of crashing my spaceship. Maybe subconsciously this was because I was brought up at the time of the Space Race. The Seventies saw missions to the Moon, to Mars and later to the outer planets. The Universe offered more for my mind to get to grips with and to use my imagination with, than anything else I had ever encountered. Put yourself into the mind of a nine-year-old boy, when in 1973, NASA was looking for signs of life on Mars. What would the implications be if they had found it? Right from this early age I was keen to know what it was all about – life, the universe and everything.

I remember that at the age of about nine, in the third year of Junior school we studied the Egyptians - their gods and a sample of hieroglyphics. I was fascinated. When I was not in school, I spent much of my time, particularly during the summer school holidays, at my elderly grandmothers. It was here I really began to be interested in ancient history.

To occupy myself I would compile projects, using my gran’s books which she later gave to me - Odhams Illustrated Encyclopaedia (1953) and Odhams Modern Educator, supplementing this with more information from the local library. I was thirteen and this was my first library card. I must have spent several hours in that library, every day of the week during the holidays. It was here I first discovered the mysteries of the universe, both natural and fantastical. I remember reading books about the creation of the universe and the solar system. I compiled an entire folder explaining the universe, from its creation to the various types of galaxies and stars, to maps of the moon and Mars.

But it was in that library my mind was awakened to all the unexplained phenomena. I had notes on the Loch Ness Monster, Bigfoot, the Yeti, UFO's and had read books on the alleged finding of Noahs Ark, books on Atlantis, Mu and Lemuria, the Bermuda Triangle, Stonehenge and other neolithic monuments. I read about the Mayans, Egyptians, the Greeks and Norse mythology. I studied rocket propulsion systems, ram jets, solar wind sails and the science of blackholes and particle. But more and more I began to veer towards the possibility of ancient contact sometime in prehistory. I obtained my own copy of 'Chariot of the Gods, all about the possible visitation by extraterrestrials in our ancient past.

I was also reading the usual American monthly output from Marvel Comics - Thor, The Avengers, Silver Surfer and Galactus, and Captain Marvel. My imagination used to run amok! Later I began to concentrate solely on the sagas of Conan the Barbarian - reading both the comics and paperback books by Robert E Howard. When I was sixteen a friend introduced me to the Michael Moorcock stories about Elric the albino, an incarnation of the Eternal Champion. My world would never be the same again. It became a quest to purchase and read as many Elric novels as I could get.

All of this shaped who I am today and what I am interested in. I seem to have an in-built urge to try and discover answers to life’s greatest mysteries. I can’t help it. Whether that trait existed before, I don’t know, but my time spent at the library certainly helped to shape it. I think the power of a book can never be underestimated. I can still smell the library I used to visit, I have such a fond memory of it, and I am grateful I discovered it. I would not be the person I am today without it!

The Assassin's Legacy

by D. Lieber

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   Urban Fantasy, Fantasy Romance, Steampunk
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

He hasn’t been Aleksandr Sergeyevich Volonov, legendary monster-hunting assassin for ten years. Now, he is only Sasha, charming deckhand on a merchant airship so recently destroyed by pirates.

All he wants is to find another job and keep moving. But that simple plan is thwarted when his sister sends an assassin to murder him. His only choice is to return to Saint Petersburg and renounce his claim to his family’s title.

Trapped by his late father’s machinations, Sasha finds himself surrounded by death threats, engaged to a brutal villainess, shadowed by his cheeky assassin, and forced to lead the organization bent on eliminating all supernatural creatures from the Russian Empire.

As he struggles to keep hold on the man he is, Sasha must face who he used to be in this modern steampunk fantasy adventure full of folklore, banter, and artifice.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT THREE:
As I unlocked and opened it, I met Liza’s grey eyes. Her gaze traveled over my body, taking in my bare feet, my only recently replaced trousers, my still unbuttoned shirt. Are her eyes lingering on my exposed abdomen? Finally, she took in my grin. I knew she was only there to make sure she knew where I was, but that didn’t stop me from provoking her.
“Did you miss me, Kisa? Could not bear the thought of not seeing me until morning?” I opened the door wider and added heat to my tone. “You could join me if you like.”
Her face flushed, and her eyes sparked like sharpened steel as she squinted at me. “I just came to see if you needed anything before I went to bed.”
I tilted my head at her. “Are you certain that is all?”
She stood up straighter and sucked in air, her nostrils flaring in irritation. It took a great deal of effort on my part not to laugh.
“What else could I possibly want from you, Aleksandr Sergeyevich?”
I shrugged lightly. “Women have wanted a great many things from me. How will I know if you do not tell me, Kisa? Tell me what you desire, and I will give it to you. I am very accommodating.”
She just stared at me for a few silent moments. “Goodnight, Aleksandr,” she stated firmly before turning on her heel and stomping to the door beside mine.
“Goodnight, Kisa,” I called sweetly, chuckling under my breath.
D. Lieber has a wanderlust that would make a butterfly envious. When she isn’t planning her next physical adventure, she’s recklessly jumping from one fictional world to another. Her love of reading led her to earn a Bachelor’s in English from Wright State University.
Beyond her skeptic and slightly pessimistic mind, Lieber wants to believe. She has been many places—from Canada to England, France to Italy, Germany to Russia—believing that a better world comes from putting a face on “other.” She is a romantic idealist at heart, always fighting to keep her feet on the ground and her head in the clouds.
Lieber lives in Wisconsin with her husband (John) and cats (Yin and Nox).
by L. T. Getty
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Steampunk-Horror

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Every decade, Marie must leave her home and everything she loves to start anew. She can’t risk the locals learning the truth of her immortality, much less her vampiric need of feeding off fear. Fortunately for Marie, fear comes easily and she spends her endless days mourning the loss of her beloved.
When she is summoned to the leaders of the masquerade, she is persuaded to assist them in uncovering a mystery of powers possibly more ancient then their own order.
As a rare daywalker of exquisite beauty, there is no society Marie cannot infiltrate. Having spent the last few centuries growing into her abilities, she expects to learn of the old powers, and return to her lonely eternity of mourning.
She doesn’t expect to fall in love.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT TWO:

I could smell the inside of the building as being more than simply old and in need of a maid. It smelled of old earth and iron. I sensed nothing out of the ordinary, which told me the devious one likely had means of cloaking. Curious, as most old houses at least had hints of hauntings.

He led me past a set of stairs and into what was probably once a receiving parlor, but he had many dusty tomes and tall bookshelves, and a ladder besides to get to the highest levels. One could not easily get to the furniture, which was draped in ugly fabric. Boxes and crates littered the floor. The cad hadn’t the sense to tidy up and make an effort when he knew he was having a lady visitor.

“How many of your kind are there in town?” Septimus asked. “More than a dozen?”

I laughed, looking up at the ghostly pale portraits. He had strange tastes in art, preferring a more stylized appropriation than realistic or idealized beauty. I saw a reference to ancient gods, destroying towns and descending upon mortal women to force upon them their demi-god offspring. Half-naked women in chains being molested was his true artistic preference, it seemed. I should have brought Rosa. Even if he only dabbled in finger-paints, she needed only half an excuse to show skin, and perhaps I could have rooted around and discovered what he was up to without his condescension.

“As…we like to keep to ourselves and go without detection, it is more like half that.” I didn’t bore him of the needs of the lesser of my kin. “Have you had many run-ins with my kind?”

“I was curious about how you go about feeding without being detected.” He turned his back on me and lit the fire almost too easily.

GUEST POST:

5 Healthy Snacks for Beating Writer’s Block

Not gonna lie – this is more of a reflection on my lifestyle than what I do differently when I write. Writing is very sedentary, so besides making healthy choices it’s not a bad idea to put a timer on when you write and not forget to get up and stretch or go for a little walk. Here’s several foods I like to make ahead of time, so it makes picking healthy choices easier.

1.)  Home Made Chia Pudding: I prefer a small/medium size mason jar, that way I can take them on the go. Flavors can be whatever you like – featured here was one made out of a spirulina powder that was designed to make a latte, so I didn’t need to add sugar but if you make yours with matcha or acai powder you can control the sweetness. The main problem with the mason jars is that, as seen, the chia seeds can some times not mix well at the bottom, so be sure to look them over from the bottom and mix thoroughly. The dog, by the way, is my pal Dodger.

2.)  Smoothie Bowl: I was super skeptical when I discovered smoothie bowls. I’d already be on the green smoothie kick for quite some time, and I thought few things were easier than mindlessly drinking a smoothie on the go. Sometimes, eating needs to be mindful and besides switching the recipe, putting toppings on it can change the experience, as well if you’re eating with a spoon you’re not just letting a half-drank smoothie ferment on the table because you’re writing a scene you’re into.

3.)  Carrots and Celery: Yeah yeah, what’s so innovative about this? For me, if I come in after a busy shift I’m usually ravenous, and will reach for the first thing I see. I used to prep mangos and strawberries so I didn’t toss three cookies down my gullet when I was making supper. I was watching a video on healthy eating and prepping and the suggestion was to prep carrots and celery. I did it, thinking it would be for work and now I want a jar at home and another one for the work fridge. Not only are the carrots peeled and ready to go, the water makes the celery crispy! I like to have them with hummus, but they’re nice on their own, too. Anyone got a good homemade hummus recipe?

4.)  Energy Balls: So what are you going to do with those leftover bits from trying to make your home made cashew milk? I hate wasting food and although I will toss the almost and cashew ‘flour’ into oatmeal and other baking I wanted an alternative for the summer months. I first encountered energy balls, made of nut butters and essentially trail mix up in a little place called Onanole, Manitoba where they called them “Owl Balls”. I usually make them with whatever I have on hand: leftover almond flour, chia seeds, honey, tahini, basically if it goes in a trail mix and I can roll it into a little ball, it’s a possibility.

5.)  Skip the Starbucks: Okay, I like writing in coffee shops, but can we all admit that the drinks can get a little sugary? Making them at home saves you time and cash, but really lets you dial in the sugar. Plus, does Starbucks have hilarious chicken glasses? I made an iced matcha latte, and although I’m not a huge coffee drinker I’ve been experimenting with freezing coffee into ice cubes and serving with homemade hemp milk and a little bit of caramel or vanilla flavouring. I get to control the sugar or syrup, so I can control the nutrition.

It’s not always easy to eat healthy, and sometimes, you get so caught up in something you’re ravenous when you finally finish a scene or you’re so busy you just want to eat something so you can get to the writing. Making healthy choices is not only about having stuff prepped, but a mindset that your body has physical as well nutritional needs. If you feel like you’re in a rut, switch it up: for instance, I love oatmeal, but I don’t want to eat it every day. Some days I put in apples, others, raisins and nut butters as well as seeds. Little changes, such as using fresh herbs and spices can go a long way in adding flavour to staples as opposed to slathering on sugary or oily sauces or other condiments.

Got any healthy recipes you’d like me to try?

Talcott Henderson, dead for over one hundred years old, wants to live again. Enslaved and abused, he longs to destroy his maker and return to the world of the living. But first, he must replace himself with someone else. Armed with only a silver tongue and a fuzzy sense of right and wrong, he sets his sights on Elyse Delafayette, a lonely melancholic. But Samuel Quartermaine, a vampire hunter with a dark past of his own, bears a grudge against Talcott's maker, and stalks Talcott from the shadows of the cemetery walls.

Will Talcott succeed in convincing Elyse to join the ranks of the undead before Samuel can stop him?

Fans of Dracula, steampunk, and gaslight fantasy will love this collection of dark and lurid tales. If you're tired of sparkly vampires and sickly-sweet romances, sink your fangs into the Nefarious Series and get a bigger bite out of the vampire world.

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT:

From Hannibal Steele and The Bone Elixir
(Nefarious Book Series Prequel)

Hannibal bit his tongue, almost slicing off the tip, at the thought of her marred beyond recognition. His tongue—tasting a scream since she’d been captured— stitched itself back together, but the pain and the perpetual scream seared themselves into his brain as he ran to the gate at the end of the alley. It was set deep into the side of a small hill, and it led down to a grotto, connecting the city’s eastern boundary with the basement of an old papermill. A dank, cool gust of air billowed from the dark entrance. Hannibal opened the gate with a sharp creak, and the ivy tendrils entwining the rails were slippery in his calloused hands, burned by the different chemicals he’d been experimenting with. He closed the gate.

Glowing amber in the darkness, his deep brown eyes illuminated his path—a gentle slope down into a humid cavern. A few rusted-out sconces lined the cement walls carved into the underbelly of the city, and his shoes slipped in the mud of a subterranean river. It rushed in his ears, hurrying him along, beckoning him to its southern bend before the entrance to the paper mill. His panic and anxiety quickened his footsteps, and his cane clinked against the slippery, moss-covered river rocks.

Abaddon had given him little time to complete the elixir before he would incinerate Emmeline. Fear and disgust haunted Hannibal. His lungs constricted at the thought of the king—all smug and overcome with joy at the prospect of executing a rival hive’s noble. He rightly feared that the king would not heed his own bargain, and instead, would take the elixir and render unto Emmeline and himself the true death. And so, Hannibal would finish the awful draught, but he’d set into motion a plan for another means of escape for himself and Emmeline.
