Return to Lerici by Rachel Dacus - Book Tour - Blurb Blitz - Giveaway - Enter Daily!

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Rachel Dacus will be awarding a $15 Amazon/BN GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

A suspenseful, uplifting story of second chances, family bonds, and redemption.

Sisters Elinor and Saffron rarely see eye-to-eye, but they agree that an unknown half-brother appearing in their lives can only spell trouble. The Greene sisters want to support their ailing mother, Betsy, as they gather in their cottage in Lerici, Italy. But they don’t want Betsy to keep searching for Baby Boy, the only name they have on faded adoption papers.

While the Greenes debate, Baby Boy finds them. A rough childhood has led Daniel to a life as a thief. When he learns of his connection to the wealthy Greenes, he decides to scam them. He goes to Italy and using a fake identity observes them at close range. Watching these people makes him ache for what he never had—a loving family.

Betsy is touched by the young man’s story and guesses their hidden connection. Discovering his true identity, she asks the family to help him. But Daniel’s shady past is catching up and putting the Greenes at risk. Should they bring their lost lamb into the fold—and can he claim his heritage if it endangers his family?

Read an Excerpt:

April in Lerici was blossoming like the paradise it was. Elinor knelt over her tomato plants pulling weeds on a fine, cool morning. Whenever she had troubles, she turned to her plants, and today she had a basketful of troubles. Bushels and bushels, and they all revolved around her mother. Betsy said she was ailing, but she was being vague about the specifics of her illness. And she’d written Elinor to say she was searching for their missing family member, Baby Boy, as he was listed on the adoption papers they’d discovered in an old drawer. Best left at the back of that drawer, Elinor thought. An unknown quantity could only be another basketful of problems.

She dug harder to loosen the weeds. Her tomato plants had to have room to breathe, though soon Elinor wouldn’t have much room. Because Betsy was coming here to stay with them, and bringing her larger-than-life personality with her, and who knew what else, packed in that huge tapestry purse of hers.

Elinor bent closer to her plants, her babies that would later this summer be ready for farmer’s market. Italy was renowned for the quality of its tomatoes, and in this fine, coastal soil they grew bigger and more flavorful than almost anywhere else. In a couple of months, hers were going to be a hit.

A sudden pain stabbed her stomach. She sat up and put her hand on her abdomen, where her sister’s transplanted kidney rested, filtering her blood. Nothing had hurt for months. Why should she have a sharp pain now, two years after the surgery?

Getting to her feet as if to escape the sensation, she stood looking out over the trees to the sea. The pain still throbbed, but was now ebbing. Years of practicing to calm the PTSD she’d had after the explosion that injured her, Elinor couldn't help picturing the worst—losing her life here in her lovely garden, before she could fully grab her amazing second chance at love.

Jane Austen Time Traveler

The Timegathering Book Series

Book Four

by Rachel Dacus

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   Sci-Fi
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BOOK BLURB:

Lonely Regency romance writer travels to the future, meets her fans, dips into a pearly swimming pool, and falls for its owner. Can she ever go home again…

If Jane Austen’s novels had never ever existed, would we have rom-com movies and women’s fiction? But the young writer is discouraged by a publisher’s rejection and ready to give up writing. And an unwelcome marriage proposal she has rashly accepted spells her doom.

Someone must save history and Jane Austen! When a stranger calls and claims to be an interested publisher, a desperate Jane agrees to go with him to his office. That office turns out to be in the future. And it's not an office, but a bookstore in southern California in 2024 where fans of Jane Austen gather every month to discuss her works.

Jane greets the Jane Austen Superfan Club, only to find that superfans can be super picky. Discouraged by their critiques, Jane wants different adventures. Even deadly, dangerous ones. And oh, yes! Romantic ones.

Her “publisher” had hoped to inspire Jane’s writing by showing her a book club devoted to her writing. But when she meets a tall, handsome superfan, Jane decides to chart her own course. She disappears with her new friend, and history may have to save itself …

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT:

Will stood and extended his hand to her. “Shall we?”

She repressed the words. I should infinitely prefer a book. Her dismay tumbled out. “Oh, no! That kind of … dancing ... I couldn’t. Not with so many strangers!”

He shook his head, smiling. His hand still insisted. “You’re not turning me down? If you venture onto the floor with me, I will show you three simple steps. You can follow them or stand still. Raise one hand in the air. We can call whatever you do dancing. So, shall we?”

How could she turn down the man whose blue eyes seemed to pin her into a world she wanted more than the one she had left behind? It would be rude to refuse. They were looking at her, smiles pleasant but quick to be disappointed if she really said no.

Her face flushed fiercely. Despite the gentle evening breeze, the impulse seized her. She rose, took his hand, and let Will lead her to the floor. Jane held onto his hand as he stepped onto it and swayed gently, holding her gaze. But until he reached out his other hand for hers, she had not fully decided. Putting her hand into his, she stepped onto the floor. She knew not what step to take next, but lent herself to Will’s lead.

The deep rhythms thrummed in her limbs, pungent as the scents on the evening air, the Margarita Punch, and Will’s gaze. Gazing up at him was easy now in this dim light. The musicians shifted to another tune, livelier even, all rhythm and little melody, but rounded and warm like she felt now.

“Do you like this?” Will leaned over to ask, his voice low so as not to be overheard.

She smiled with abandon. “I love it!” His touch anchored her. The beam in his eye was a lighthouse on a dark sea.

EXCERPT TWO:

THE SAN FRANCISCO QUAKE

He turned to look at her, his brown eyes wide, but his brows pulled together in concern. “Are you going to be okay?”

The smoke from the 1906 earthquake was thick in the air. She repressed a choke. “I’ll be fine.”

“Are you cold? You look like you’re shivering.”

That wasn’t why she was shivering Liv looked down at her clothes and was startled to find herself swathed in a long skirt of heavy silk brocade. Her petticoat rustled its many folds. She was encased in so many layers, she might have been wearing an overcoat to shield her from the wind.

“I’m not cold.”

She turned again and looked down the hill, seeing the ferry building and docks, a familiar landmark. Her emotions calmed.

A man in a bowler hat passed them.

“What’s happening?” Tom asked.

“You’re aware, surely,” the man said. “You see the smoke, the rubble. Pardon me, I must find my family.”

He scooted down the hill.

“In a matter of days, people begin to thirst and even starve,” Tom said. “Half the city is homeless. I just wanted to know if that fellow was a helper.”

“A helper?”

“San Franciscans who had something left began to help the others. The city grew together under the devastation. I wasn’t kidding when I said half of everyone here is homeless, or nearly so.”

Liv couldn’t reply. The enormity of what she was seeing choked her. Tears rolled down her face, and when she wiped them away, soot came off her hand. Her face must have already grown gray with the ash from fires. Tom’s had too.

The Time Gatherer

by Rachel Dacus

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Fantasy
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Coming of age as a time traveler isn’t easy. Young George St. James gets help from a magical medieval monk and a 23rd century geneticist. But they can’t keep him safe from a secret society dedicated to eliminating time travel. When love unexpectedly arrives in a distant century, George must use all his skill to thwart his foes while trying to save his beloved from their malice.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT TWO:
Giorgio not only behaved differently from the men of her city, he looked different. He had his honey-colored skin and thick, dark hair. His voice, even when not singing, ranged from deep to high. Everything about Giorgio fascinated her.
“What are you painting besides Prospero’s portrait?” he asked.
“I’m thinking of a new painting.” She hoped he wouldn’t insist on looking at the painting of him on her easel.
She refilled his glass. “I want to paint the story of Portia, wife of the noble Marcus Brutus, as she stabs her own thigh to prove she can keep secret the plot to kill Julius Caesar.”
“I know the story. A courageous woman.”
“And like all women, she must do as her husband bids. That is why I will never marry. Unless to a man who bids me to do exactly what I am doing.”
She was pleased when Giorgio picked up her hand and kissed it.
“Would you like to see it?”
“Naturally!”
Betta got up and put the canvas of Portia on the easel, hiding the portrait of Giorgio. She beckoned him over to see, hoping he’d appreciate the way she had portrayed Portia’s sad anguish. Portia was costumed in red and gold, wearing the jewels of a noble Roman wife, with pearls twined through her hair. A tiny blade was half-concealed in her hand. Her quiet desperation was in her stare, a woman whose life is nothing to the great men of her time.
“She is beautiful … and sad,” Giorgio said.
Betta was glad he understood.
“She’s led to a desperate act,” he continued. “Despite the fact that as a woman she must obey the men around her, she is very brave. You’ve given her magnificent clothing and jewels, and they only make her predicament sadder.”
Betta suppressed the tears welling up. Giorgio understood her painting so well.
The Invisibles
by Rachel Dacus
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Women's Fiction

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Sisters Saffron and Elinor inherit a cottage on the Italian coast from their father, along with its resident ghost and a secret manuscript. Their rivalry explodes through a struggle for control of the inheritance.
Saffron has a genius for creative living, but ever since her judgmental older sister interfered in her love life, Saffron and Elinor haven’t spoken. When death brings them together at their father’s funeral in Rome, the battle re-ignites. It continues as they travel up the Italian coast to take possession of their cottage. Both secretly wish to mend fences, but they have opposite views about the best way to live.
Saffron has always sensed the “Invisibles”, people lingering after their demise. When the spirit who lives in the house predicts one sister might die, she takes it seriously, but can’t convince her practical-minded sister.
As they prepare the house for sale, Italy infuses its magic in food, festivals, and local love interests -- until a shocking night changes everything for the sisters and their friends.
A tale of sisterhood and the supernatural, perfect for fans of Mary Ellen Taylor and Barbara O'Neal.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

PRAISE FOR THE INVISIBLES:

Author Dacus does a superb job bringing the village of Lerici to life, from the smells of the sea to the pungency of the local olive oil, and showing how the Italian way of life changes both women. An enjoyable, romantic read.
~ Suanne Schafer, author of HUNTING THE DEVIL

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT TWO:
Saffron startled awake in a dark room. Where was she? She remembered this was the cottage in Lerici. Her chosen bedroom.
A strip of light glowed under the door. The window, which she had left cracked open before she went to sleep, let in gusts of chilly, damp air.
She was about to fall back asleep when, despite the coolness, electric prickles sizzled up her arms and the dark came unmistakably alive.
“I know you,” she said aloud, sitting up and turning on the light. “You can’t hide.”
But of course, he could. Any Invisible could hide, though most wanted her help, so what was the point of hiding?
She fumbled around on the bedside table. Trying to remember the lamp and where the switch was, she touched the leather cover of the book of Shelley’s poems. The last verse she had read before falling asleep now came to mind.
In the golden lightning of the sunken sun, o’er which clouds are bright’ning, thou dost float and run; like an unbodied joy whose race is just begun.
I am an unbodied joy.
She whispered back, finishing the line. “. . . whose race is just begun?”
Shelley had been dead for more than a century. Why hadn’t he moved on to The Room Over There? Invisibles had to move on, didn’t they? Yet she felt him here, breathing, as if his breath blew gently on her forehead. She couldn’t see him in the dark, but maybe if she could turn on the light.
Her skin crawled. She reached farther over and found the light switch. In the suddenly bright room, she saw a misty form in midair. Sitting up now, she waited to see what he’d do.
The poet’s pale, round face became clear.
She spoke again. “A Poet hidden in the light of thought, singing hymns unbidden.”
But you are bidding me to come.
“Am I?” How was she calling Shelley to come to her?
Shake your chains to earth like dew.
“But they’re not mine. Ellie’s  the  one  with  chains!” She felt a subtle weight join her on the bed. She gasped.
“What do you want?”
Peace between my girls.
Peace. My girls. The word grated on her wounds. She winced, feeling the many criticisms from her sister over the years, the scars that never quite healed.
Tears rolled down her cheeks. “Ellie doesn’t want peace. She wishes I’d never come to this family. That you’d never sent me to them.”
The voice, melodious, deep, and familiar rang out.
“Saffron dear, I had to send you somewhere. I couldn’t care for you, and you never forgave me for that.”
“Dad?” she called. “You’re breaking my heart all over again!”
No reply. Then, “Your heart must become unbreakable like mine.
