EXCERPT TWO:
“I
really appreciate you coming to the hospital.” How many times had Carolina said
that already?
Sage
slid closer. “I want to see you again.”
She
could see the kiss coming.
He
stopped inches from her face and asked, “Can I kiss you?”
“Yes.”
Her single word was a whisper.
His
lips were gentle. Sweet. Light pressure with a little scrape from his stubble.
“Nice,”
he murmured, brushing kisses on her cheeks and eyes.
Her
hands rested against his chest. “Really nice.”
Sage
leaned in. His tongue licked the seam of her lips, seeking entrance.
She
opened and stroked his tongue with hers. He tasted of coffee and mint and
something dark and sexy. His chocolate-citrus scent made her want to sip at his
lips, kiss his eyelids and nibble on his collarbone. She gripped his shoulders,
the muscles hot under her hands.
He
tipped her head and buried his fingers in her hair.
She
fell hard into their kiss, wanting to explore the firm body beneath her
fingers. “Sage.”
He
pulled her closer.
Pain
slashed her chest as her seat belt locked in place. "Ooh."
They
laughed.
He
cupped her cheek. “I guess your car is trying to tell us something.”
That
she should take him up on his offer to come up to his apartment?
“I
can meet you at the hospital in the morning,” Sage suggested. “Maybe we could
have breakfast nearby?”
Guilt
had her sitting back behind the wheel. While kissing Sage, she’d forgotten
about her mother. “I’ll have to see what’s happening.”
“Sure.
Sure.” He brushed another kiss on her lips, this one sweet and soft. “Will you
let me know when you get home? I don’t want to worry that you didn’t make it.”
Had
anyone ever cared if she got home safely? “I’ll call.”

Who Inspired Your Love for Books?
Books
were incredibly important in my family. One of my early memories is of my
father reading The Grinch Who Stole
Christmas on Christmas Eve. This was before it was a book. My mother had
clipped a copy of the story out of Family
Circle magazine. And that was the copy read for years. Even now that my
kids are grown, we still read The Grinch
Who Stole Christmas every year. (Okay – I can recite it!)
My
mother used to read to my siblings and I. Usually the younger kids got her lap
and the older kids gathered on the floor. In a family of five kids, it was hard
to get the honor of sitting on Mom’s lap. But she would read the Just So Stories by Rudyard Kipling. And
new children’s books came every month in the mail. So many Dr. Seuss books and
children’s classics. With two older sisters I had to be quick to get first
crack at the monthly books. And of course there were the books that came
monthly from my aunt who lived in Australia. Such a different world than the
prairies of South Dakota.
I was
just finishing fifth grade when I first met my English grandparents. (My mother
met my father during WWII, but didn’t immigrate until 1948. My grandparents
came to America and lived with us for a marvelous year and a half. They read
all the time. But what was more thrilling was the poetry recitations. After
meals either my mother or my grandfather would recite stories or poetry. My
grandfather even taught my 5 year old sister the entire Gunga Din poem by
Kipling. I learned If. And The
Green Eye of the Little God. (My grandfather lied about his age and joined
the Calvary at 16. He was stationed in India during WWI and fell in love with
the country.) My grandfather even gave me the complete works of Shakespeare. It
came in handy when I took a Shakespeare course in college—for fun!
And
my father loved to read too. He passed on his thirst for knowledge. Looking up
things in the encyclopedia while having a dinner conversation was normal, both
with my parents and siblings and my own family. (Now it’s all about asking
Google.) We would trade books every time we were together; science fiction,
medical thrillers, and thrillers. And my sisters and I would do the same. Now
that I read most of my books on eReaders, I missed passing books back and
forth.
But I
never thought I would be a writer. In high school, we were required to write
journals and hand them in. I never thought of myself as a writer, that was my
mother and sister, but my teacher liked my writing and encouraged me to do
more. I didn’t think much about it, but then my college freshman writing
professor had us do a creative writing project. I wrote a story on fairies. She
read it aloud to the class and encouraged me to publish the story. (I lost it
before I could do anything!) Those two teachers made me think I might be a writer—but
I didn’t act ono the idea for years.
I
hoped I’ve passed on my love of books and reading to my kids and now my
grandkids. The first books I give them are Winnie
the Pooh. And eventually I will give them the Jungle Books. And maybe I will teach them The Green Eye of the Little Yellow God. They’ll will wonder why I
smile while telling them the tale, but it will be because I am passing on a
tradition.

Dixon spent
her formative years as an actress, singer, dancer and competitive golfer. But
the need to eat had her studying accounting in college. Unfortunately, being a
successful financial executive didn’t feed her passion to perform. When the
pharmaceutical company she worked for was purchased, Nan got the chance of a
lifetime—the opportunity to pursue a writing career. She’s a five-time Golden Heart® finalist,
lives in the Midwest and is active in her local RWA chapter and on the board of
a dance company. She has five children, three sons-in-law, two granddaughters,
one grandson and one neurotic cat.
