Born for Leaving
by Mia Kerick
writing as Jude Munro

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Gay Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

When they say be careful what you wish for, do you pay attention?

Neither did Oliver Tunstead.

Oliver wishes for nothing more than to get his mind off his crappy bartending job, pile of debt big enough to swallow him whole, and playboy ex-boyfriend/boss who refuses to back off. Too bad distractions, like the hot little convertible he has his eye on, cost megabucks. And Oliver is flat broke. Renting the spare bedroom in his rundown beachfront cottage is his only option to pick up the cash he needs—a risky proposition, as Oliver is the polar opposite of a people-person. When he responds to a bizarre ad in the Waterfront Gazette seeking summer housing, he gets more than he bargained for. But Oliver can cope… After all, how much harm can a single quirky tenant do to his tightly guarded life in three short months?

Where Oliver is a loner by design, urban cowboy Bodie is a loner by necessity. A family dispute long ago dropkicked him onto the path of a lifelong wanderer. This changes when Bodie moves into the tiny beachfront cottage and starts working the door at Oliver’s bar.

Despite Oliver and Bodie’s nearly paralyzing instinct to avoid commitment, they fall into a wary romance. And to their surprise, life as a couple is sweetly satisfying; that is, until their jealous boss devises a cruel plan to destroy the tentative bond they’ve built. True to form, Bodie hits the road, leaving Oliver to lick his wounds alone.

Can these wounded souls defy their urge to flee and fight for love?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT ONE:
“You said there was an outdoor shower.”
“Oh, yeah. It’s on the deck off the kitchen.”
He drops his bags in the hall between the bedrooms. “You cool if I borrow a towel? No room for ’em on the bike.” His cheeks turn pink. “I’ll hit the store tomorrow. Ya know, I can pick up sheets and towels and shit like that.”
“No worries—I have plenty of towels. Come here.” I lead him into the hallway and point to a narrow closet. “I have extra sheets too. Don’t waste your money on that stuff. You’re only gonna be here for a few months.”
Bodie nods. Once, of course.
“You can use the bathtub if you want to freshen up before you go to work.” I do my best to fight the blossoming image of a burly naked cowboy with a crown of dark red curls, swallowed up in a pile of bubbles, lounging in my old clawfoot tub. I fail and hear my own extended sigh. “It sort of brings you back to childhood. You know, soaking in a tub.”
“Nah.” His shoulders stiffen. “I like the outdoors better.”
“Okay, then. And for your fingers, there are bandages in the bathroom medicine cabinet.” Bodie grunts his acknowledgment and grabs a faded pink bath towel out of the closet. Then he shakes off his boots and pulls his T-shirt over his head as if he’s alone in his bedroom.
And just as I figured… a golden brown six pack appears beneath a light spray of copper chest hair. “Um, I’ll leave a key for you on the kitchen table.”
“Cool.”
When he starts to push down his sweatpants, I flee. The last thing I need is to witness a sexy cowboy perform a seemingly inadvertent striptease in the hallway by my kitchen. I’m through with great-looking men worming their way into my life and leaving me more alone than before I let them in.
“Just lock up when you leave.” I stand at the front door, back turned to him and my hand fastened on the doorknob. Ready to run. “You’re heading to your job in a little while, right?” I glance at him over my shoulder.
“That’s right.”
I should ask where he works—what he does for a living—but his sweatpants are looped around his ankles and I’ll admit to being somewhat flustered at the sight of his rugged thighs, not to mention the amazing curve of his backside in nothing but his Calvin’s. “Well, I guess we’ll catch up later, Bodie.”
“You bet your ass we will.” When he laughs—a deep rumble—it’s like he knows something I don’t. Whatever the case, the prickles of heat I’ve been unsuccessfully trying to ignore turn into goosebumps and shoot down my arms. Shoulders, wrists, and fingers—all tingling. Which can’t be good.
What have I gotten myself into?
MY BOOK REVIEW:
This book brought on a rollercoaster of emotions over the course of the story!!!
The author has a unique way of creating stories that are filled with easy to relate to characters, overcoming obstacles, and finding acceptance amongst the turmoil.
The author further lends a voice and provides a safe place for young readers to express, understand, and just really be themselves.  I feel happy to know that teens can turn to this author and her books for comfort.
What also really stood out about this book was the high emotional content, the raw and gritty details, the thought-provoking passages, and the complex multidimensional characters.
I liked the main characters, Oliver and Bodie.  These intricate characters (and total opposites!!!) are likable, genuine, and realistic.  These characters are easy to connect to and relate with.  It is clear from the get-go that both of these characters are hurt, damaged, and struggling with their own secrets and baggage.
Although I am not part of the LGBTQIA life, I can still appreciate intriguing characters and enjoyable story lines, like this book cleverly provides.
I really enjoyed that the author created flawed and damaged characters that really showcased her writing style and ability to push her characters to reach their full potential over their arc.
A strong character development journey to root for and enjoy watching it unfold!
This book has a creative story line that flows, excellent writing style with well-described scenes, and strongly developed characters!!
There are some predictable scenes.  However, there are still a few very unexpected twists and turns that you won’t see coming!
This book is Book One of the New England State of Mind Book Series.  It can be read as a standalone.
I would remiss if I didn’t mention a content warning label that should be attached to this book.  There are many difficult topics that are addressed in this story and can be quick triggers for anyone with previous history or ties to them.  As one of those readers, but who has worked hard to be able to overcome and skip past certain scenes, I would feel horrible for not warning someone – especially if they were not as far along in their recovery, going into this book blindly.
All in all, I enjoyed reading this book and would absolutely recommend it!  I think all Gay Romance fans or LGBTQIA fans will like this book too!  So, add it to your TBR List and get to reading – you won’t be disappointed!
AUTHOR BIO:
Like Jude Munro, her fictional characters in her gay romance novels are drawn to the beach. They’ve sunbathed on the sands of many alluring East Coast beaches, along with the fantastical beaches in Jude’s books. They’ll answer questions like “Who do you think you are, the sun god?” (which they often resemble) if they can hear you over "Boys of Summer" cranking on their headphones. To most of Jude’s men, no shoes and no shirt is really not a problem. But even on the sunniest of beach days, the guys in Jude’s books do have problems… as in, serious relationship issues. Many of which seem insurmountable. And each character must earn his day at the beach. (Yes, there is always a HEA).
All Boy
by Mia Kerick
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: YA LGBTQ Romance

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Seventeen-year-old Callie Canter knows all about screwing up—and being screwed over. After her so-called boyfriend publicly humiliated her senior year, taking a fifth year of high school at Beaufort Hills Academy is her second chance to leave behind a painful past. But her need for social acceptance follows, and going along with the in-crowd is the difference between survival and becoming a target. Staying off the radar is top priority. So, falling for an outsider is the last thing on Callie’s “to-do” list. Too bad her heart didn’t get the memo.
With his strict, religious upbringing and former identity far away in Florida, Jayden Morrissey can finally be true to himself at Beaufort Hills Academy. But life as a trans man means keeping secrets, and keeping secrets means not getting too close to anyone. If he can just get through his fifth year unnoticed, maybe a future living as the person he was born to be is possible. Yet love is love, and when you fall hard enough, intentions crumble, plans detour, and secrets are revealed.
From multi-award-winning author Mia Kerick, comes a powerful, timely, and life-changing novel, which follows two teenagers nursing broken hearts and seeking acceptance, and who together realize running away isn’t always the answer.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT ONE:

Callie

It’s not like I planned to let him hurt me last year. I mean, nobody actually plans to step in front of a moving train—when you see it in the distance, chugging toward you at full speed, you take one giant step backward. Except in my case with Ryan. I stood there like an idiot, shut my eyes, and let him plow over me.

It shouldn’t have surprised me when I got flattened. But it did.

I need to get with the program. This isn’t a freaking game—it’s my life and my last chance at a successful senior year, which will hopefully land me a decent college scholarship. I’m not going to screw it up by making a move on any boy, let alone the hottest boy in the school. Even if he was really sweet each time he saved my ass.

And so I do what I do best: I retreat into the bookshelves, backing stealthily from Archaeology to Anthropology to Folklore.  When I reach the Economic Theory section, it’s as if I never paused beneath a Linguistics and Philosophy sign to casually consider my chances with a boy who makes me feel like I actually matter but still doesn’t know me from Adam.

AUTHOR BIO:

Mia Kerick is the mother of four exceptional children—one in law school, another a professional dancer, a third studying at Mia’s alma mater, Boston College, and the baby finally off to college. (Yes, the nest is empty.) She publishes LGBTQ fiction and romance when not editing National Honor Society essays, offering opinions on college and law school applications, helping to create dance bios, and reviewing English papers. Her husband of twenty-five years has been told by many that he has the patience of Job, but don’t ask Mia about this, as it is a sensitive subject.

Mia focuses her stories on the emotional growth of young people who are challenged by the circumstances of their lives and relationships. She has a great affinity for the tortured hero in literature, and as a teen, Mia filled spiral-bound notebooks with tales of tortured heroes and stuffed them under her mattress for safekeeping. She has NineStar Press to thank for providing an alternate place to stash her stories.

Her books have been featured in Kirkus Reviews magazine. They have won a 2019 IPPY GOLD award for Juvenile/Young Adult Fiction, Rainbow Awards for Best Transgender Contemporary Romance and Best YA Lesbian Fiction, a Reader Views’ Book by Book Publicity Literary Award for Young Adult Fiction, the Jack Eadon Award for Best Book in Contemporary Drama, an Indie Fab Award, a First Place Royal Dragonfly Award for Cultural Diversity, a First Place Story Monsters Purple Dragonfly Award for YA Fiction, and a category finalist for the Eric Hoffer award, a finalist in the National Indie Excellence Awards for Young Adult Fiction and more.

Mia Kerick is a social liberal and cheers for each and every victory made in the name of human rights. Her only major regret: never having taken typing or computer class in school, destining her to a life consumed with two-fingered pecking and constant prayer to the Gods of Technology.

GENRE: LGBTQ Contemporary Romance

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
ONE tropical island.
Placida Island’s gentle ocean breezes and rolling surf beckon to those who wish to reside in remote tropical serenity.
TWO men living in self-imposed exile.
Wearing twisted ropes of mutilated skin on his back and carrying devastating damage in his soul from severe childhood abuse, Matthew North lives alone in a rustic cabin on the shore, avoiding human contact.
Gender fluidity his perceived “crime” against family and friends, Vedie Wilson flees his childhood home so he can freely express his identity.
THREE persecutors seeking their warped view of justice.
Vedie’s past refuses to stay in the faraway city he left behind when family members, intent on forcing him to change, steal him from his island home.
TOO MANY scars to count.
Their beautiful faces masking deeply scarred souls, Matt and Vedie live in hiding from the world and each other.
Can they unite and embrace each other’s painful pasts, leaving the scars behind to find love?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT TWO:

Matt

Once again, I’ve been drawn to The Only Tiki Hut on Placida Island, as a moth is drawn to the flame. I drink my beer slowly, another brew of Vedie’s choice, and I can’t help running a long list of discontents through my mind.

I don’t like how Joey looks at Vedie’s ass when he bends over a table to fill the gray tub with dirty dishes. He’s doing it right now, as I swallow my last sip. And seeing this makes my fingers itch with an almost unavoidable need to grasp the older man by the neck of his faded green T-shirt and throttle him until he’ll never again be physically able to stand behind Vedie and drool over his body. I close my eyes and mentally go there, just long enough to imagine the pleasure that would be mine if I were to give in to my rage.

“Hey, Matt. Tonight’s special is lobster mac and cheese. I tried it—the stuff is legendary.” Sheila’s smiling at me, and it’s a brighter smile than usual, as if she thinks we’ll soon be going on a double date together. I don’t think I’m comfortable with this.

“Sounds good. I’ll take two to go.” I want to look away from her smile, but I can’t.

“One’s for Vedie, right?” Her smile turns into a grin.

My blush gives me away, I’m sure. “And put lots of rolls in the bag, please, and a garden salad, too…heavy on cucumbers.”

Another thing I dislike is how I’m starting to know Vedie’s preferences. He’ll slather the rolls with butter and pick the cucumber slices out of his salad with two fingers and dip them into the ranch dressing he will have poured onto a saucer and close his eyes while savoring his feast.

I don’t like that I admitted to Vedie my cat Jennifer is named after Jennifer Aniston, and Bob is actually Sponge Bob Square Pants.

I don’t like how when I come back to reality on my living room couch or in my bed—after my mind has shut down because I couldn’t handle a question or a smell or a sound—that Vedie is holding me, his arm tight around my shoulders. And how I feel safe—so safe I sometimes pretend I’m not back yet, closing my eyes and letting time stand still while I relish the comfort.

But more than anything else, I don’t like that Vedie knows my secret. That I provided him with enough clues to guess it, and I did this intentionally. I wanted him to know because I needed to share in his strength.

I don’t like it at all.

And it’s why I have to push him away.
