I looked forward to sipping tea and exploring Mark’s ancestral roots in Ireland, but oh, what a twist of fate!

My life as owner of The Painted Lady Inn hardly prepared me for this. With my detective husband by my side, we embark on a journey filled with mayhem, murder, and mischief.

As I savor every bite of Irish stew and soak in the breathtaking scenery, little do I know that our vacation will turn into a whirlwind of sleuthing.

Who could have imagined the secrets hidden behind Mark’s family tree? And what dark secrets lurk in this picturesque village, threatening to shatter the tranquility?

The jig is up, and it’s up to us to untangle the web of intrigue.

EXCERPT TWO:

A large delivery truck emblazoned with the word Tato and a smiling potato wearing a bowler hat careened around the curve. “Mark, watch out! He’s coming right at us.”

“What’s his problem?” Mark exclaimed, pushing in the clutch and shifting down while guiding the tiny car to the suggestion of a shoulder. The truck honked as it whizzed by them causing the small car to sway.

“Um…” Donna cleared her throat. “I think you were in his lane.”

Mark muttered something indecipherable, then closed his eyes. “You’re right. If I wasn’t so flummoxed by this joke of a car, I might have remembered they drive on the left side of the road. Add in the manual transmission, which I haven’t driven since high school. Having to use my left hand for shifting doesn’t help.”

“I know, honey.” She reached over to pat her husband’s arm, which only required moving her hand the slightest bit. “At least we’re still in the airport parking lot as opposed to an actual road.”

“Good thing.” His eyes flickered open and he inhaled audibly. “It is what it is. Let’s start by getting on the right side of the road.”

“Left side.” Donna couldn’t stop herself from commenting.

After glancing both ways, Mark steered the vehicle over to the left lane. “They could have at least put some reminder to drive on the left side.”

“They did.” She pointed to white transparent letters slightly above eye view that read: Stay Left.

“Not the easiest to read.”

“Of course not,” she readily agreed with her husband, well aware a portion of his attitude came from being tricked by the counter clerk. The rest came from being out of control. So far, this wasn’t the trip they’d planned. “How about you find a car going our way and just stay behind it? That’s what I do on long trips.”

EXCERPT THREE:

Giving his wife an uncertain glance, he erupted into an awkward jog. His long legs carried him to where a wall and the door to the administration offices used to reside. A few wires dangled from the hole in the ceiling. Blackened acoustical ceiling tile surrounded a ragged patch of blue sky. The blast carved a hole into the slab flooring. Herman pulled out his phone, snapping pictures madly, knowing any minute he’d be stopped. In one corner of the room a leather davenport sofa remained covered in broken acoustical tile, drywall chunks, and glass shards, but still in one piece. Papers littered the scene possibly from the mangled metal cabinet in the corner wadded up like a discarded note.

Interesting the davenport remained, along with a few feet of carpet, but not much else. A pair of men’s black oxfords stood next to the wall. Herman stopped taking photos and gulped. In an age where no one ever bothered to shine their shoes anymore, these had to be Ron’s. Only a former soldier who could have been dropped for push-ups during basic training for not having a shine on his shoes would care enough to keep a heavy polish on his shoes.

Shook by the possibility of what the shoes meant, Herman stood silently, reflecting that less than an hour ago he vowed to talk to the new director and maybe even find out the secret behind his scar. He audibly exhaled, knowing now he’d never discover the story.

In the background, he could hear his wife speaking. “I bet you were Mister October on last year’s calendar. You look like an autumn type of guy. Built like a maple. With that fiery hair, you’d be a red maple.”

“No, ma’am. Our department doesn’t believe in objectifying firefighters for money,” a man replied in an amused tone.

“What a pity.” Lola paused, obviously lost without the calendar as a subject. Herman centered the focus on the shoes and snapped a photo. In a way, it summed up Ron. Former serviceman, who never forgot the rules service taught him. Be prompt. Be ready. Be aware. Why hadn’t he noticed something wasn’t as it should be?

EXCERPT ONE:

A week without a murder or the mention of any crime made Donna Tollhouse Taber grin. She adjusted the car window clamps on the British flags, then stepped back, resting her hands on her lower back. “I think it’s a nice touch.”

Her detective husband, Mark, ran a hand through his salt and pepper hair. “I don’t know.” His face scrunched up. “It might be over the top. Howard doesn’t strike me as the showy type. He keeps things low-key, a proper Brit.”

Typical. Her husband thought he knew all about the neighbors over the pond due to an online relationship he’d struck with Scotland Yard detective Howard Dudley, when he previously researched diamonds and jewel heists. Never mind her husband hadn’t put in the hours she had watching BBC mysteries and The Great British Baking Show. If Howard didn’t appreciate her effort to welcome them, his wife, Elizabeth, certainly would. “A proper Brit might mention they don’t go in for pomp and ceremony, but just look at the royal weddings. They go crazy about those.”

“Well, you’d know more about that than me. All I can hope for is a nice quiet time with no murders. I told the station not to call me unless it’s an emergency. A vacation is still a vacation even if I don’t leave the state.”

“The best thing to do is not answer your phone.” Donna had doubts about her husband not getting pulled into a case.

EXCERPT ONE:

Donning rubber gloves, Della tackled the dirty dishes, indulging in an impromptu trip down memory lane. Even though it was more than a decade ago, every now and then, the memories of not quite fitting in no matter what she did came back. Her school broke down into cliques with the predominant ones being jocks, popular kids, and the hipsters, plus everyone else that didn’t merit a label. As for the jocks, their name said it all while the popular kids were a little harder to define. Sure, it was easy to know who they were, but what made them popular was difficult to pinpoint. Most came from powerful, affluent families that usually had a member on the school board. This often translated into starring roles in the school play or being on the first string in athletics.

Thanks to a cyber security assembly in middle school at which her father presented the other students knew her father as that cop. It resulted in Della getting the side-eye now and then, especially if other students happened to be talking about underage parties. Every party that was busted somehow got laid on Della’s doorstep. Never mind the fact her detective father didn’t take noise complaints associated with teen parties. They assumed she told. Not sure how they came to that conclusion, when she’d never been invited. Not once did the partiers ever consider that deafening music, the abundance of cars, and raucous behavior might have resulted in irate neighbors calling the police.

Some kids might have let it go, but not Lacey. Just her name had Della gritting her teeth. Small town life had its share of mean girls who aged into entitled, mean women. Lacey had to be the queen of them all. For most, being beautiful, wealthy, and the topic of most conversations would be enough. Even with everyone treating the woman like royalty, Della could tolerate it if her royal meanness stayed far, far away.

That was why a woman’s condescending tone reaching into the kitchen and might as well pinched Della. “Oh, how quaint!”

Her head jerked up, and the pan slipped from her fingers. A shiver raced up her spine. No, it couldn’t be. Better check it to be sure. There had to more than one snotty female in town. Her athletic shoes allowed her to creep across the kitchen floor without making a sound. Whoever was out there would say something else, dispelling the possibility it was Lacey. Why would Lacey even visit her modest bakery?

EXCERPT TWO:

The bell rang as two jean clad men entered, toting duffels and wearing backpacks. One had a ballcap on backward while another one had a scruffy beard similar to Ten’s. The younger one, with the cap, bent slightly to put down his duffle, the word CREW spelled out on his t-shirt.

“Hello. Can I help you?”

The second man ran his hand through his thinning hair and smiled, causing his crows’ feet to fan out attractively. “Thornton Ames. We’re with the Bake-off. I think we have rooms here?”

The younger guy grumbled as he tied his athletic shoe. “We didn’t get in with the rest of the crew. They’ll be partying every night.”

Donna pretended not to hear. She reached for their key and readied her welcome speech, tweaking it the tiniest bit. “My husband, who happens to part of Legacy’s fine police department, welcomes you to The Painted Lady Inn, your peaceful haven. I was just getting ready to put your gift baskets in your room, but I can show you the room and leave the basket. Multi-tasking,” she told them with a smile.

“Much obliged,” Thornton commented with a slight drawl to his words.

“Carolinas?” Donna asked with interest. She should have guessed it with a dignified name like Thornton. She loaded one arm with gift baskets and gestured toward the stairs with her free hand. Their room was on the second floor, and they both looked capable of walking.

“No, ma’am. Georgia. Atlanta is becoming quite the production place. Cheaper than Hollywood.” Thornton fell in step beside her.

“So, is t bake-off show from Atlanta or Hollywood?” She hoped Hollywood. That would sound much more glamorous in the retelling.
