Fanny Fitzpatrick and the Sirens by Dana Hammer - Book Tour - Guest Post - Giveaway - Enter Daily!

Fanny Fitzpatrick and the Sirens
by Dana Hammer

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   Middle Grade Fiction
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BOOK BLURB:

It’s the end of the school year. For most kids, it’s time to relax and get ready for summer. For Fanny, there’s work. She has a brand-new baby brother, and she’s been hired by Zeus to look after his “injured” son. And she still has her and her friends’ cheesemaking business! Fanny is overwhelmed.

But then she meets three sirens who want Fanny to join them on Feather Island for a summer of singing, instrument playing, and fun at the beach. The program is totally free and could start an amazing musical career-the thing that Fanny has always wanted the most.

Athena and Gemma are dead set against it. Athena says that the sirens are bad news; that their whole purpose in life is to lure men to their deaths with their beautiful singing. Gemma says that Feather Island is part of a network of unmappable islands, the type of place where criminals and sketchy organizations hoard their wealth and do their crimes.

Surely, the sirens don’t do that anymore, right? All that stuff was a long time ago. If the sirens want to keep their island paradise a secret, well, that’s not so weird, is it? Fanny has talked to them, and she just knows that they aren’t as evil as everyone says. They are perfectly nice ladies.

Right?

Follow Fanny Fitzpatrick as she navigates big sisterhood, friends who disapprove of her life choices, burning ambitions, and a bunch of sirens luring her away to their private island.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT TWO:
But I don’t have a chance to practice or not practice, because I remember that I have a Zoom date with Gemma and Athena. I head down to the computer and log in to the meeting.
Gemma and Athena are already in there, talking about something. They look serious and sour, but Gemma is wearing the most adorable newsboy hat with embroidered flowers on it, and I squeal when I see it.
“Gemma, that hat though!”
They stop talking and look at me, not smiling. I realize something weird is going on, and so I stop smiling.
“Fanny, we need to talk,” says Athena.
That’s not good.
“Um. Gemma? How’s England?” Gemma shakes her head at me.
I look back to Athena, who has crossed her arms, which makes her look like a strict disciplinarian who’s about to give me a terrible lecture. And I realize that’s exactly what’s about to happen.
“Herman told me everything,” Athena says.
“Um.”
“You let those things in your house! After I specifically told you how dangerous they are!”
“I didn’t let them in,” I say, which I realize is a wimpy thing to say, but I can’t think of anything better. “My dad did.”
“What did they want? Why were they there, at your house?”
“Well—”
“Do you have any idea how many people sirens have killed over the course of these millennia?”
“But that was a long time ago!” I say, sounding desperate and silly, even to my own ears.
“Fanny,” Gemma says, quietly, looking around to make sure no one is listening to her. “I’m not supposed to say this. But there are these islands. A few of them. And they have special deals with the UN, NATO, the African Union, and a few others that I’m not allowed to even say the names of. They have diplomatic immunity. They operate under their own laws, and they answer to no one. They’re unmappable, untraceable. I’ve been talking to Athena, and I think these islands are owned by the sirens.”
“You sound like conspiracy theorists,” I say, rolling my eyes. “How do you even know about these top-secret islands if they’re so top secret?”
“My parents,” Gemma says, like it’s obvious. I guess it should be obvious. I still have no idea what her parents do for a living, but they seem to jet around the planet a lot, with machete-bearing security guards, so I guess it must be important. Still.
“Well, Feather Island is a school. A school for musicians,” I say, trying to reassure them. “There’s a brochure and everything.”
I wish I had the brochure so I could show it to them, how lovely and harmless the place is, but my parents have put it somewhere and I don’t know where it is.
“How do you know about Feather Island?” Athena demands, looking even more furious.
Whoops. I guess I’ve gotta tell them now.
“That’s what the sirens wanted. To tell me about their music camp.”
“NO!” Athena shouts, banging her fist on the table in front of her. Splinters of wood fly everywhere and I’m kind of scared now. This is intense, even for Athena. “You can NOT go to this island. I don’t care what they told you. It’s bad news.”
GUEST POST:
A Playlist for Fanny Fitzpatrick and the Sirens
I like to create playlists of music that set the mood for whatever I want to write. Fanny Fitzpatrick and the Sirens is about a preteen girl who is recruited by sirens to attend a summer camp for aspiring singers. Fanny is an energetic, determined kid, with a strong moral compass and fierce loyalty to her friends. I wanted a playlist that would reflect that. Here are the songs on it.
(Please note, I am not a preteen girl. These are not present-day cool kid songs. But they work for me, to get me into the right headspace.)
1.)  Sweet Shop Avengerz, Bis
A high-energy song about raiding a candy shop. I think that’s what it’s about anyway.
2.)  Paper Bag, Fiona Apple
There are actually several Fiona Apple songs I listen to when writing Fanny Fitzpatrick stories, because I imagine Fanny’s voice being something similar to Fiona’s, but a little less mature.
3.)  Give Me Chocolate, Baby Metal
The juxtaposition of little girls singing with heavy metal screaming is delightful, and representative of Fanny’s sweetness and her toughness.
4.)  Best Friend, Saweetie/Doja Cat
Fanny loves her friends, and always supports and helps them. I can imagine her and her friends doing a coordinated dance routine to this song.
5.)  Rebel Girl, Bikini Kill
Fanny is a good feminist, who would never tear down other girls out of jealousy.
6.)  Shut Up and Let Me Go, The Ting Tings
I don’t know why, but this song just works for Fanny books.
7.)  Wannabe, Spice Girls
Friendship. Girl power.
8.)  San Diego Zoo, The 6ths
Who doesn’t like pretty songs about the zoo?
9.)  Defying Gravity, from Wicked
Fanny is friends with gods and goddesses and incredibly wealthy people who are always getting her into wacky situations. Fanny is working class and has no supernatural powers, but she doesn’t let those limits define her. She defies gravity, sometimes literally.
10.)  We, The Roches
A cool female singing group, sort of a modern day Andrews Sisters.
11.)  Don’t Give Up, the Noisettes
Fanny doesn’t give up. Ever.
The Cat Who Chased Ghosts by Nic Minnella - Book Tour - Book Blast - Giveaway - Enter Daily!
This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Nic Minnella will be awarding a $15 Amazon OR Barnes and Noble Gift Card (Winner's Choice!!!) to a randomly drawn winner via Rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.
In a sleepy little town, an ordinary-looking cat hides an extraordinary secret that will transform his owners' lives forever.
When the Thompson family inherits a dilapidated old house, their overprotected son Timmy forms a strong bond with Whiskers—a chronically lazy tabby who's not what he seems.
As Timmy explores the house's mysteries, a chilling discovery puts his courage to the test. With the help of Whiskers and some newfound friends, he must face supernatural forces beyond his imagination and rescue a soul in peril.
The Cat Who Chased Ghosts is a spine-tingling tale about bravery, loyalty, and the magical power of friendship (human and feline) that will thrill readers of all ages, reminding us that sometimes the most extraordinary heroes come in the most unlikely packages.
EXCERPT THREE:
The idea seemed to greatly amuse Jasper. His eyes now sparkled with excitement.
“Alright, count me in.” He laughed, closing his comic book. “After school, we go on the hunt. If there’s something spooky in your attic, we’ll catch it on camera.”
He lifted his hand for a high five.
“Deal.” Timmy grinned, reciprocating. Just as he began to feel the tension in his body ease up for the first time since the night before, a faint rustling sound caught his attention.
“You’ll catch what on camera?” asked someone behind them.
Both boys turned around to see Louisa standing there, her arms crossed over her Born Swiftie sweatshirt, suspicion etched on her face.
“None of your business, Louisa,” Jasper retorted.
“Still breaking into people’s homes?” she shot back.
“We’re planning a science project,” Timmy intervened.
Louisa looked at him with narrowed eyes. “A science project that needs video cameras and voice recorders?”
“We’re doing an experiment on . . . sound properties. Of different spaces,” he made up on the spot, looking over at Jasper, who nodded enthusiastically.
“Listen, we still owe you for helping us last night. If you need anything,” added Timmy, trying to defuse the tension while changing the subject.
Louisa shrugged, mollified. “I think you two are up to something. And I think I know what. But you’re right, it’s none of my business,” she said and turned away, shaking her ponytail in silent disapproval. “Just remember that some things are better left alone.”
The Legendary Mo Seto
by A. Y. Chan
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE:   Middle Grade, Martial Arts, Action / Adventure

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BOOK BLURB:
Mo Seto, martial arts movie star! Has a nice ring to it doesn’t it? Too bad there's a height restriction to audition. But 12-year-old Modesty (Mo) Seto has never let her height get in the way before, not when she became a black belt, or when she fought the meanest boy in her class, and she’s not going to let it stop her this time! Now if only she can figure out a way to grow five inches and fool everyone at the auditions…and find time to search for her missing father (who just might be harboring a dangerous secret of his own). Join Mo on an adventure (and audition) of a lifetime and find out if powerful things really do come in small packages!
Publishers Weekly calls THE LEGENDARY MO SETO “Adrenaline pumping”, Kirkus Reviews says it “Packs a punch”, and Booklist calls it “Remarkably relatable.” Leap in and join the fun!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT THREE:

I tap the arm of a boy next to me. He’s around my height, though he looks like he’s probably a good couple of years younger. “What’s everyone looking at?”

The boy cocks his head toward the crowd and frowns. “There’s a poster about auditions for a Cody Kwok movie, but—”

Cody Kwok? Cody Kwok! Aaaaaaaah! Every thought inside my brain disappears, except for the words “CODY KWOK” in capital letters, surrounded by flashing lights.

I need to see that poster.

I crane my neck, but it’s no use. What would Cody Kwok do? Cody wouldn’t let buildings or bridges or trains or nuclear explosions stand in the way of what he wanted—let alone a few people.

“Nacho, meet me out front. I’ll be right back.” Slipping through cracks, under armpits and between legs, I duck, crawl, and push my way through until I’m standing in front of Cody’s magnificent face. I’d recognize it anywhere. His black eyes are narrowed, and his lips are curled, as if daring his opponent to strike. His fists are held in a classic fighting stance.

“Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh.”

Below the picture are the words:

CASTING CALL FOR THE PROTEGES

GUEST POST:

Character Creation

I once read that everyone is the main character in their own story, and this couldn’t be more true in storytelling. Sure, you’ve got a terrific main character—let’s call her Jem. You’ve mapped out a fun, twisty adventure for her to embark on. You know Jem down to her unruly auburn curls that have a mind of their own. She’s got quirks that make her unique but still relatable, a clear goal, and plenty of challenges to help her grow. And, of course, she’s surrounded by a lively world with her parents, her annoying little brother, and her best friend, Geoff.

But here’s the kicker: what about Dad, who hates his job and regrets not enrolling in the Space Special Ops as a spaceship fighter pilot? Or Mom, who moonlights as a spy for the world’s fiercest criminal mastermind? Or Geoff, who just found out he’s a clone of his parents’ real child, who disappeared years ago?

The truth is, every character in your story is the main character of their own life. They all have their own wants, needs, growth arcs, and resolutions. So, if you thought you only had to create one main character, surprise! You’re actually creating many. Each character’s journey is just as important as Jem’s—to them, at least.

Creating characters means diving deep into each one’s background and understanding their dreams, fears, and quirks. Even if these details don’t all make it onto the page, they’ll influence how your characters think, the decisions they make, and how they interact with each other. This depth makes your world feel rich and lived-in, and your characters become more compelling and real.

So, as you build Jem’s world, take the time to flesh out the lives of those around her. Understand what drives them and what keeps them up at night. Maybe Dad’s regret leads him to bond with Jem over shared dreams of adventure. Perhaps Mom’s secret life adds a layer of tension and excitement that spills over into Jem’s story. And Geoff’s shocking discovery could create a subplot that enriches the main narrative. Character creation is about treating every individual in your story as the main character of their own. This approach adds depth and richness to your writing, making every interaction and subplot more meaningful.

The Sophia Freeman Series by T.X. Troan - Book Tour - Guest Post - Giveaway - Enter Daily!

The Sophia Freeman Series

by T.X. Troan

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:  Middle-Grade Fantasy Mystery
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BOOK BLURB:

What begins as a special trip for eleven-year-old SOPHIA FREEMAN and her billionaire father, leaves her trapped on a mysterious island with a tree boy and other fantastical creatures.

The moment Sophia thinks her situation can’t get any crazier, she is shocked to learn the island is under a deadly eternal curse. All living things are rapidly decaying and soon nothing and no one—including herself—will be left alive.

From competing in a three-round yearly held competition to reviving a long-lost magical spell, Sophia and her new companions must gather every ounce of courage, wit and skill as they are stepping closer to breaking the 150-year-old curse. But will they make it in time while surrounded by enemies and traitors aiming to stop them at any cost?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT THREE:
From Book Three - Sophia Freeman and the Era of Darkness:
Another flaming whip slashed between Sophia and Tim, and they swiftly dodged it. Who could possibly be using Dark Art spells? They looked over and saw Allen’s smoking wand in one hand and Sophia’s scroll in the other.
“S-sorry, guys—I got curious,” said Allen, trembling.
Tim roared, “Curious? You’re not supposed to—”
Sophia raised her hand like Dad did to her, to silence him.
“Allen, can I have my scroll back?” she asked calmly, easing toward him.
Staring at it, he said, “Um … yeah,” and handed it to her.
“Did you hurt yourself?” Sophia asked. “Do you feel any different?”
“I’m fine—actually, I feel good,” said Allen, with a tiny grin.
“Interesting—could you show us how you did that spell?”
Allen gave her a puzzled look. “You mean I’m not in deep trouble? Uh … sure.” He shifted into the attack position and shut his eyes.
“Sophia, I don’t understand—why are you wasting our time?” Tim demanded.
“Shh … Mona was right—you should really work on your temper.” She kept staring at Allen without blinking. “Just watch.”
A moment later, a strong gust howled past them as his wand lit up.
“Allen, break that tall boulder with roots wrapped around it!” Sophia shouted.
He struck with an aggressive roar. “HELLFIRE LASH!” The third flaming whip was unleashed, and it was much bigger than the previous two. It struck directly at the target.
KABOOM!
The spell left a hole through the boulder the size of Allen’s fist.
“Wow, that was impressive,” Tim mumbled.
Sophia handed him the scroll and turned to Allen. “Do you feel any different this time?”
Admiring his wand, he said, “Yes, I felt … confident. Something I didn’t think was possible.”
I get it—he’s attracted to Dark Art spells! At that instant, an absurd idea came to her mind.
Inventing and Developing Mystical Creatures
Creature creation is a huge part of the Sophia Freeman series. For each unique character, I would start out by researching two or more animals I want to combine. Once that part is done, I would outline the appearance, habits and make sketches of the new creature (with many references). Then I would come up with a name. The creature creation part is so much fun!
To check out some of the sketches, please go to: https://txtroan.com/sketchbook
AUTHOR BIO:
Thuan Doan is an award-winning author of the Sophia Freeman series. He conceived his first middle-grade fantasy novel, Sophia Freeman and the Mysterious Fountain, during a trip to Gabriola Island, British Columbia in the summer of 2013. Then he took his work and settled in a small town of Enderby, where it’s peaceful and quiet.
Thuan is writing under a pen name of T.X. Troan. “X” stands for Xu, his grandmother’s name who passed away. And “Troan” is a combination of his parents' names.
“No matter how this turns out, I want my family to be a part of this wonderful journey.”
T.X. Troan married Sarah, his original fan and longtime love, in 2016. They live in Enderby with their pack dogs!
Fanny Fitzpatrick and the Brother Problem by Dana Hammer - Book Tour - Guest Post - Giveaway - Enter Daily!
Fanny Fitzpatrick and the Brother Problem
by Dana Hammer
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE:   Middle Grade Greek Mythology

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BOOK BLURB:
Dion Isaacs (the reincarnation of Dionysius), Athena’s brother, is wreaking havoc. After to an unfortunate bee-venom poisoning at his wine business, he is down on his luck and crashing at Athena’s place. But the former god of wine, feasting, and excess is a bad influence on Fanny’s best friends, with his partying, wacky business schemes, and general debauchery. Sure, Dion is a fun guy. But there is such a thing as too much fun, and Fanny seems to be the only one who sees it.
Meanwhile, Fanny’s mother is suffering from hyperemesis gravidarum, which basically means she pukes all the time, because she’s pregnant. With her mom unable to work, her dad is taking extra shifts to make more money, and things are getting tense at home. Fanny is excited to be a big sister, but all this sickness and stress over money are starting to take their toll on her.
Can Fanny save her friends from Dion’s negative influence, while also solving her family’s money problems? Of course she can. She’s Fanny Fitzpatrick.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT TWO:

I hope Mom doesn’t have breast cancer. She would have told me about that though, right? You don’t hide cancer from your only daughter. That would be messed up. I get out of bed and pad down the hallway until I get to the bathroom. The puking is louder now, and I can hear Mom gasping between retches. I knock on the door.

“Mom? Are you OK?”

“I’m fine, Sweetie.”

Then she retches again.

“No you’re not Mom! You’re sick! Do you want some Sprite?”

Mom gives me Sprite when I’m nauseated, and it usually helps.

“Mom? I think you need to see a doctor. You’re not getting better.”

“Fanny! Go away!”

I don’t know what to do. My dad has already left for work, so he can’t help. I think about calling an ambulance, but then I remember that 911 is only for emergencies, and I don’t think this counts as an emergency.

“Mom, I’m gonna call an ambulance,” I say.

“NO!”

“But Mom—”

“Fanny, go decorate the tree!”

This stops me for a moment. Decorate the tree? Why?

“Why?”

“I’m not feeling up to it. Go decorate the Christmas tree. It’ll be a big help.”

I stand by the door, not knowing what to do. Is Mom trying to be tough, like the time she hurt her ankle and refused to go get X-rays, and she just limped around the house for a week until it swole up to like twice its size, and Dad finally made her go to the hospital, and it turned out she’d FRACTURED IT? Should I be like Dad and put my foot down and call an ambulance?

Ways to Deal With Rejection, as a Writer

I once heard that Stephen King saved up all of his rejection letters and pinned them to a wall, and used them as motivation to succeed. All due respect to the master, but that would totally demotivate me, and absolutely crush me.

Of course, rejection is a major part of writing professionally, or doing any kind of art professionally. Absolutely everyone who submits writing will get rejections; I don’t know a single writer who has not. And this is where the weak are weeded out. Because to survive as a writer, you need to be able to handle rejection and NOT GIVE UP.  There are some qualities and processes that can help you with this. Here are a few.

1) If you’ve ever been emotionally abused, use this to your advantage.
People from happy homes, who form loving, healthy relationships with romantic partners and friends are at a serious disadvantage when dealing with rejection. They have no idea how to take hurtful comments, negative criticism, or silent dismissal. But not you, you lucky damaged writer! You have built up a thick membrane around your heart. When a publisher or agent says “This does not meet our needs at this time” you remember that time a man who “loved” you called you a trashy idiot cunt, and suddenly “not meeting their needs” doesn’t seem like such a terrible insult.

2) Have an enormous ego.
I would argue that most artists have big egos. This is not a design flaw, it’s a feature. In order to create and send your creation out into the world, you have to believe in yourself, and believe that you have something important and fresh to bring to the world. When you get rejected, your ego will protect you. Your ego will tell you that these agents and magazines and publishers don’t know what they’re talking about. They don’t appreciate your genius. You will think of all the artists who were not rewarded in their time, and you’ll count yourself among them. Is this an attractive quality? No. But it is an important one, and you should absolutely cultivate your gigantic ego. Just don’t let it show on the outside, because people will not like it.

3) Know that judges and gatekeepers are not gods.
I sometimes enter screenplays into script contests. This is a fun thing to do, and it helps you network and sell scripts. You get to go to film festivals and have your picture taken on red carpets and meet interesting people. But, in over the course of attending several film festivals, I started meeting screenwriting judges. And not judges for small festivals, for BIG PRESTIGIOUS festivals. Here’s the ting. I always assumed that to be a judge for a prestigious film festival, you had to have special skills, or some kind of experience in the industry. You don’t. These judges are just…people. Usually they are people who have some kind of screenwriting experience, but they are not producers or professors or even professional screenwriters. This doesn’t mean they are bad; just that they aren’t necessarily better than you. So take their rejections for what they are — one person’s opinion.

4) Have a sense of humor about yourself.
If you can’t laugh about your rejections, you are bound to experience a lot of internal darkness and anger. There’s a story I sometimes tell about the time I got drunk and wrote a short story and immediately submitted it to a VERY prestigious publication. Without editing it. I will not name this publication, but you’ve heard of it. Of course, it was rejected, because, drunken, unedited writing is not my best work. Also, it was about Chairman Mao and Ghandi in a three legged race at a church picnic, so you know…not a crowd pleasing premise. Was I ashamed of myself the next morning, when I woke up and realized what I had written, and where I had sent it? Um, yeah. Yeah, I was. But you know what made me feel better? Reading that god-awful short story I’d written, out loud, to my friends. We all had a good laugh at my expense, and I WAS OK WITH THAT. Not only was I OK with that, but it made me feel a whole lot better about the whole thing. If you can laugh at it, you can live with it, right? Right.

If you are in a creative field, you are going to experience rejection. It’s just part of it. But if you keep going, you will probably find your markets, and your people. And if you don’t, at least you know that you had the fortitude to try.

EXCERPT ONE:

WindRunner shot into the air, following the great ‘Dragon through the sky. Peregrina’s wake was strong and fast, and WindRunner put himself in the center of her air stream. Mary looked around, sensing for the other Thoughtdragons that had attacked the Garnet Revenge, but did not feel them.

It doesn’t mean they aren’t nearby, WindRunner said.

Really?

Do not become overconfident with this power, Mary Jingo. The Thoughtdragons are dangerous. Older even than my Kin. While I face the same temptation as you—I am drawn to her great power—remember that Peregrina wanted to be found. Otherwise, we would not have been able to follow her.

That couldn’t be possible, Mary puzzled to herself. She had known where Peregrina was. Mary had made this decision to follow Peregrina, hadn’t she? A stab of doubt hit Mary in the chest. Had they walked into a trap?

Peace, Warrior, WindRunner said soothingly. Peregrina wanted us to follow her. I don’t think she will harm you. I think she wishes to speak with you. Or, that is what Mikeala said to me before we left the boat.

You had a private Mindspan with Mikeala?

Yes. She told me I should take you if you wished to go.

Private Mindspans are rude when they are about someone else. The Father says so.

WindRunner laughed in her mind.

Suddenly, Peregrina stopped in midair and whipped around. WindRunner dove to keep from running straight into her serpentine length, ending their conversation. Peregrina beat her wings softly to stay stationary, and WindRunner flew around until he was face to face with the great Thoughtdragon.

Mary’s stomach sank. The last time she had been face to face in the air with someone like this, it had been the evil Mellie. She had won that battle, but only barely. She was not certain she could win a battle like that again. Peregrina was even more terrifying than Mellie. Her head was twice the size of WindRunner. The Thoughtdragon only needed to barely open her mouth to swallow them both whole.

WindRunner sent courage through their bond, but Mary felt his unease. He was being strong for her, just like she wanted to be strong for him. Peregrina spoke then to them both, her voice rich, gravelly, and musical, like a bass note dropped beneath a perfect melody.

“Well, you followed me out here, Shadowlander. What is it that you want?” She slithered her great head to the side as she said this, and Mary felt and smelled the Thoughtdragon’s untamed power. It blotted out her fear.

“I need your scales. Three of them. We need them in LeeChee. The Everything is shrinking, and I am fighting with the Resistors. We are trying to save it,” Mary said, breathing deeply. She spoke clearly and with confidence. “Please help us, great Peregrina.”

The ‘dragon shook her head and laughed.

“Save it? Save the Everything with my scales? Child, in your tiny mind, I might as well be the Everything. You cannot save the Everything with the Everything. And that world, that island, has been pitiful and beyond saving for many annuals now. Your Keeper is the size of a child. Don’t you see? It is lost. Go home to your dark, dark world and leave us in peace. Your People are causing the problem anyway.”

“My People?” Mary responded, trying to hide the hurt in her voice.

“Yes—you Shadowlanders. The Everything is created in the Shadowlands. It cycles up and up to places like LeeChee to be kept safe. Over time, it drifts back down to the Shadowlands and the cycle continues, with the ebb and flow of time. Do they not teach you anything in school down there?” Peregrina paused and turned her livid golden eyes to WindRunner.

“And you, the Lumon’s son. Bound by oath to protect a girl from the Shadowlands. Why have you done this?”

“She can save us,” WindRunner blasted back.

“Can she?” Peregrina replied with a grin on her giant mouth. “How? It is the greed of her People that has caused the blight in your lands. They don’t go outside anymore. They are trapped in their own heads, in their own tribes. They don’t listen to each other. They hardly interact with anyone who doesn’t think exactly how they do. How does one child heal rifts and tears that are hundreds of years old? This is why the Everything shrinks. Do you not know, WindRunner, son of Spearwing? Or are you all much too blind to see it?”

“Mellie is to blame for the Void. Mellie has been warping the Everything to her own purposes,” Mary said, yelling across the distance.

“Fool! Mellie was once like your precious Mikeala. As tall as a mountain and charged with keeping the Everything and the flow of the Cycles safe. She could no more turn the Everything into the Void than I can. It is against her nature. But to regain her former strength and form, she may have been tempted to help someone corrupt the Everything. The Void is powerful, even if it is unnatural. She may be helping the flow of the Void, but no, no. She did not create it.”

“Her scars,” Mary said to herself and WindRunner, thinking of the marks that marred the woman’s face. “Her scars are from the Void.”

“Yes,” Peregrina said. Her hearing must be excellent to perceive Mary over such a distance. “Yes. She has paid dearly in service to the Void.”

“You must help us,” Mary cried desperately. “Mikeala said you brought me out here to talk to me. Help me. I know you can.”

The giant Thoughtdragon swirled her body in the air in front of Mary. Small flames burst from her mouth when she laughed. Mary could feel their heat as they crackled in the air.

“Why would I help you? As I said, the greed of your people is what is causing LeeChee to die. It will grow dark and cold and fade, and me and my kind will visit it no more. And your land will suffer, Mary Jingo. As we have all suffered.”

“Please—you cannot let this happen.”

“How dare you!” Peregrina boomed. Her jaws opened wide. “How dare you accuse me of letting anything happen. It breaks my very being to know that LeeChee will fall into darkness and the Void, but I cannot intervene. Your People, you Shadowlanders, with your pride and your lack of imagination, your desperation for profit. You will kill LeeChee. I allowed you to follow me here because I wanted to see your face before I send you back to that darkened world of the Shadowlands. You don’t belong in LeeChee, Mary Jingo. You will only make things worse.”

Peregrina dove towards Mary and WindRunner, spinning her long body in the air and flapping her wings hard. WindRunner, always ready for attack, spun out of the way, as Mary gripped the handholds. She cast for Peregrina’s power, but found herself blocked from it.

WindRunner. She has shielded me. I cannot channel or control.

Sensing Mary’s fear, WindRunner burst through the air, the giant ‘dragon following swiftly behind. Peregrina was bigger, which WindRunner used to his advantage, banking and turning quickly through the air, making it hard for the Thoughtdragon to follow. Mary found herself dizzy and out of sorts, casting about for ideas. WindRunner blasted a mighty caw at the Thoughtdragon and watched as a jet of light shot from his beak and hit Peregrina squarely between the eyes. She roared angrily, then continued her wild pursuit.

GUEST POST:

Let Me Show You My Writing Space: The Nerdery

Welcome to the Nerdery! Let me show you around my home office, where I spend my time churning out these ideas for you all to enjoy.

My partner and I purchased our charming little house on the Eastern outskirts of Nashville in 2020, right at the peak of the pandemic. It quickly became a safe haven for us and our two dogs. Our favorite room to set up was the office, or—as we affectionately call it—The Nerdery for Nerd Things.

My husband is an avid comic book nerd with a collection of books, floppies, quarterlies, and omnibuses too big to mention. I am a nerd of a similar ilk, but lean more toward fantasy novels and faerie books. We meet somewhere in the middle at Steven Universe and the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Our home office is crowded with hundreds of hardback and paperback books, graphic novels, and comic books. We’ve had to overflow some of our collection to other rooms in the house because we are truly running out of space for all the reading materials we own.

The books are accompanied by my army of (mostly) female Funko Pops. These characters keep me company on long writing days and help me think about the way certain heroes would handle difficult situations. They also help me get lost in daydreams when I need a break from cranking this stuff out, because it is truly tiring.

Of course, there is a plethora of plants in the Nerdery. We all need a little clean air in our spaces, and these living, growing things definitely help add color and health to the space.

There’s a giant whiteboard for collecting stray thoughts, outlines, and content calendars. Under that sits a dog bed for when either Penny or Bodie wants to join me while I work.

Lastly, there’s the desk. Littered with pens, sticky notes, more figurines, and paperwork, the desk is where I take to the comfy chair to work, knowing that my Funkos have my back.

How do you decorate your workspace?
