EXCERPT ONE:
It was then that I realized I was in it for the both of us. My father and I against the anguish. At one point, during the early hours of morning, the crying faces had all gotten loose and were crawling up the walls and dropping from the ceiling like smokey apparitions from Dante’s Inferno, liquid shadows of creeping hunger, an infestation of screaming mouths and terror-stricken eyes, the reality of the walls closing in on me like a wriggling, dark prison. In my panic and shock, I finally blacked out, leaving the room for the numbing promise of sleep. I welcomed unconscious bliss.
Note to self: pain is a manifestation. It lives like a beast, a breathing, hungry creature, unable to free itself from destiny, unable to make the choice to release itself because it is comfortable in its tragedy. It is easier to go on in pain, then to go through to the other side where there is peace. The fear stops you. It prevents you from going all the way.

Worldbuilding can be the most important element of your book. What media outlets, role-models and real-life inspirations did you draw from while writing this book?
When I start from ground zero and start to build the world around my characters, I always think of their internal psyche, their hang-ups, their level of internal struggle, because ultimately their outer world will reflect this. Think about a room with furniture, pictures on the walls, lamps, and a rug. Is it cluttered? Is it a pristine interior? What do the objects in the room tell you about the person who lives in this world? Does the hero or heroine collect rain water in jelly jars or plant seeds in dirt filled egg cartons and leave them by the window sill? If they are OCD, the objects in the room would be in perfect little rows...everything would be in its place. Idiosyncrasies say a lot in the fictional world of physical objects.
I tried to do this in the larger scope of world building with the story Lady's Code. The very architecture of the buildings in the futuristic world personify the levels of transformation the main character goes through in little epiphanies. You will see this toward the end where the levels of an archival library are actually representative of the five senses of the body etc. This is one of the laws of the fictional universe. The outer world, for it to be relevant, must reflect in some metaphorical or allegorical way the character's inner transformations and psychological make-up by reflecting it in symmetry and alignment.
It is like theater and prop placement—a book of fiction should create the stage of reality perfectly for the reader with carefully designed objects reflective of the emotion and energy you want to convey in the main protagonist's goals and dreams. If their life is a mess, the way they put away their clothes should speak to that. Do they throw their socks and shirts on the floor or neatly fold them back in drawers or hampers? This ultimately says a lot about how the hero or heroine internalizes the world. And if it is not addressed, this says something too about the importance of the daily habits of the main character's activities and state of mind. Who cares where the clothes go! I am concerned about saving the universe!
It was William Shakespeare who said, “A coward dies a thousand deaths, a hero dies but once.” I always try to take this into consideration when getting inspiration for my main characters. It applies on many different levels—psychological, literal, metaphorical, but the writer must tailor the character's fate around this sentiment, writing about conflict with timing, meaning, and a sense of both loss and strength in the character. It is a completely binary situation...to be a coward or to not be a coward and each hero or heroine must deal with it differently. Ultimately the one true face—that of personal strength must conquer and work through the conflict, leading to either the hero surviving or turmoil prevailing.

Tracy Ross is the author of three poetry volumes and the fictional narrative Certainty of One—A Tale of Education Automation. Her latest work, Binary Logic is a short story collection which touches on many genres—surrealism, horror, magic realism, and science fiction. In Binary Logic she tries to not be tethered to one type of story but attempts to explore the metaphors and symbols behind the dualities of choice, free will, and decision.
Ross is a graduate of Augsburg University's MFA program and is a life-long student of the metaphysical behind language as well as consciousness studies. She has lived in Detroit, Chicago, and the Boundary Waters Canoe area in upper north Minnesota. As a youngster she progressed straight from Judy Blume books to Franz Kafka, making a giant leap into existentialism by the age of nine. She is also a student of film and popular culture, working on a new book of essays on life, liberty, and the pursuit of media. She currently lives and works in Minnesota.
