The Mermaid and the Unicorns

by L. T. Getty

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:  Middle Grade Fantasy Adventure
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Daphne’s a typical mermaid, and at least according to her, that’s a problem. She’s courageous and has a beautiful singing voice, but lacks the power of an elemental, the ability to command water with the sound of her voice. Jealous of her best friend, she makes a deal with a sea-witch, only to be betrayed, in place of her beautiful tail and flukes Daphne’s left beached with a pair of human legs. The spell keeping Daphne looking human will become permanent, unless Daphne can hunt down and bring the scheming Lorelei a unicorn horn before the next full moon.

Unable to reach her friends and family for help, Daphne doesn’t know how to walk, much less where to find a unicorn or how to catch one. Even if she’s successful, Daphne’s still not sure if she can trust Lorelei and her pint-sized kraken to keep their end of the bargain and let her return to the sea.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT THREE:
"What's wrong?" Esperanza asked as Daphne went to retrieve the arrow.
"Nothing," Daphne said, unstringing the bow. "Not like I'm ever going need to use this skill. Let's just pack up and go."
"What are you talking about?" Esperanza asked. "You're already better than I am. Here, let me have a try and I'll show you."
"I've already unstrung it," Daphne snapped.
"Fine," Esperanza said, matching Daphne's tone. Esperanza went to go get more water from the river with the large buckets to boil so that they could wash their dishes.
"I'll do that. Water's heavy," Sean said, ignoring Daphne as she struggled to take their tent down.
"Here, let me help you," Esperanza said to Daphne once Sean started towards the river.
"Sure—let's send the person with the tallest reach to the river, great plan," Daphne muttered, climbing onto the wagon to reach the tip of the tent as Sean descended towards the river.
"What's your problem?" Esperanza demanded as soon as Sean was out of earshot. "We're helping you get to Taralee. Sean didn't have to come all this way, you know."
"He didn't come for me, Espy. If it was just me who wanted to go, he wouldn't care that I had to walk the whole way. What do you want, me to kiss your feet and sing your praises? Wait, I forgot—you're the better singer, you should sing your own praises. I might not do it good enough without a four-stringed harp and a cat to squeeze for background noise."
"Our voices are different. Neither one is really better than the other."
"It's just... do you know what it's like to be overlooked?"
"All the time," Esperanza said. She looked away, towards the river. "Hey, wait... be quiet for a minute."
"Don't you tell me what to do—" Daphne became mildly insulted when Esperanza put a hand over her mouth.
"Listen."
They heard singing. A beautiful, high pitched and soft melody, barely audible above the breeze. The sound had a haunting quality. "Doesn't sound like it's Sean's range," Daphne muttered, but then really heard it. She ran, and got the arrow and the quiver as well as Sean's knife and axe. She quickly strung the bow before heading towards the river bank.
"What are you doing?" Esperanza asked, following after Daphne.
"Stay with the wagon!" Daphne ordered.
MY BOOK REVIEW:
This book is an intriguing, enchanting, charming fantasy read filled with important life lessons and engaging story lines!!
Mermaids and unicorns and a sea witch, oh my!!
This book follows Daphne, a young mermaid with a deep jealousy streak that triggers her to strike a deal with a mean sea witch, putting her on the trail of a seemingly impossible task of retrieving a unicorn horn.
While Daphne faces an all-too-common dilemma we’ve all been guilty of at one time or another – wanting what you don’t have and/or being envy of someone who does have said coveted characteristic, this book shows the great length someone will go to in search of obtaining the unattainable.
While this book bears a strong resemblance to Disney's famous mermaid tale, "The Little Mermaid," the author was able to cleverly create a unique and refreshing take on a timeless favorite.
This book encompasses so many valuable lessons and morals that are sure to teach, inspire, and resonate with young readers.
Although this book does have many interesting and engaging scenes, unfortunately, I occasionally found some of these passages to be on the slower paced side.  While the author excelled at quickly sweeping the reader off into an intriguing, fantasy world, some overly detailed and lengthier scenes caused moments of disengagement and disconnect from the story.
There are some predictable scenes.  However, there are still a few very unexpected twists and turns that you won’t see coming but will enjoy watching unfold!!
This book is not currently listed as part of a book series.  It can easily be read as a standalone.
All in all, I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it!!  I think all fantasy and adventure book fans – especially readers that fall into the MG, YA, and NA genres will like this book too!!  So, add it to your TBR List and get to reading - you won't be disappointed!!
GUEST POST:
Inventing and Developing Mystical Creatures
Adding Flavor to an Already Established Myth
Some creatures are so iconic images and tropes pop up at the mere mention of their names, such as unicorns, dwarves, and vampires. Others have had so many interpretations, that you have questions before we get started. Are the elves in this story more like Tolkien’s, beautiful and etheric and almost too good; or more hostile, like we’d see in The Witcher or Terry Pratchett’s Discworld? Assuming we stick with that tall, slender aesthetic and we’re not talking about the Christmas or Cookie-Baking in a tree variety, that is.
So what can we draw on? What is set in stone? When is a dragon no longer a dragon?
Most cultures are familiar with the notion of a dragon. If we were to paint with very broad strokes, let’s divide all of mythology into Occidental (West) and Oriental (East) for a moment. One side has a beast that’s been historically treated as evil, hoards gold, eats maidens, and while it can be intelligent, can also be mindless or seen as the greatest object one can defeat. The other sees them as more traditionally benevolent, often seen as more of a heavenly creature if not a manifestation of the natural world (such as Haku from Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away, he was the spirit of the river) and has the possibility of shape shifting. There may be regional variations (for instance, Japanese dragons are usually depicted with three toes on a foot, whereas the Chinese feature four) that should be considered if you’re drawing from a specific setting or tradition.
So when developing a dragon, one has options. You may chose the more western, wyrm type form while wanting the dragon to be a figure of wisdom and can chose to be good or evil. Maybe they lack the ability to speak, but can commune telepathically. Maybe they don’t hoard gold, but something else of innate value that your hero wants to obtain.
The first thing to consider is the audience expectation. I know some people would want to start with the creature and develop the world around this idea, but I would politely point out that’s acceptable in this genre, because the audience is so vast. An audience who wants something gritty and realistic may prefer a dragon that closely resembles a dinosaur and is mindless, pointing out that its wings can only glide and it cannot breathe fire, whereas the audience who wants romantic or epic wouldn’t mind taking liberties with wings that could not support the beast. Some audiences get hung up on these details, others don’t mind that you’re breaking *some* rules because you’re being consistent. Just be aware that if you do break rules, someone will notice, and probably will complain.
Developing mermaids for my novel was fun, because I got to make some executive decisions. For instance, do I want to make them more fairy-like, or do I want them to be almost more gruff, and consider the realities of underwater living? Some people like to draw them with extended fish features on the upper half, and it’s very obvious that it’s not just the bottom half. What do they eat? What is their culture like? What are their fins like; are they one like we traditionally see, or the more rare two-style fin?
Although I really consider the origin of merfolk to be in the greek tradition (Poseidon and his Undine, I’ll talk about that more in another post on this tour!), there’s sea-folk creatures found all over the world, so I got to be really choosey when creating my merfolk.
Giving really features to the protagonist wouldn’t have worked with a heroine like Daphne who is turned human by Lorelei and who mostly fits in – and while I’m not against Lorelei altering Daphne’s appearance further, it’s an extra step in the story that was really not important. I do draw out the characters, and there’s little hints (Daphne’s feet or skirt almost always flares out in a fish-tail like shape) but nothing to beat the audience over the head. I didn’t chose a descriptive style, and Daphne’s the main character, so we’re mostly in her perspective and it wouldn’t make sense for her to mention having ‘beachy waves’ for hair or whatever.
I had to consider the climate and the reality that most people would have froze in the water that the merfolk were in. Most creatures, especially mammals who live in cold water, have a healthy layer of blubber. I completely fudged this and regret nothing. I considered how they communicated under water, and even offered a bit of an answer, but subsequent beta readers told me that the audience (children) didn’t want a technical answer.
The next thing I had to consider was the relationship between humans and merfolk. I established that yes, some merfolk have powers related to their voices, but it’s not all of them. Because of this, humans can’t tell who can or can’t and because we’re a story telling species, they may know perhaps only a handful can, but they bring down powerful storms etc, and you can’t tell just by looking which merfolk will lure you and drown you and which ones are harmless.
Because the people the merfolk would have mostly interacted with would have been fishermen and sea faring, the people who make their livelihood from the ocean would have myths and stories about monsters of the deep, and even if they themselves were to have amicable stories about merfolk, I’d imagine that if they had travelers through their parts stories from other parts would be shared and there’d always be a healthy amount of caution given to the water. I am a prairie girl myself, and while I scuba dive and kayak, that’s mostly in and on calm waters, and I’ve been in situations where the weather changes very quickly and the winds pick up, and what was a beautiful and fun activity just got a whole lot more dangerous.
On the merfolk side, I implied that the wizards have an interest in merfolk because some of them do have elemental powers, which can be used and harnessed by the wizard under certain circumstances. Most merfolk would have developed a natural fear for being captured and imprisoned on land – whether they were sold to a wizard or put in a giant fishbowl to go with a traveling circus. That wouldn’t stop some of them from interacting from time to time – say a fisherman could befriend a young mermaid caught in his net that he released, and she’d bring him some shellfish in gratitude when he caught nothing that day, but because the world they inhabit was so different, there would be a natural fear of the unknown as well as a sense of helplessness when you’re thrust out of your element, or even trapped there even if your ‘friend’ on the other side meant well. There are many stories, including traditional Ojibwe, about merfolk (Nibiinaabe) who swam in the lakes in my area, and when children swam in areas where they should not have, almost drowned and were rescued by merfolk, only to be turned into mermaids themselves. Sounds like an exciting adventure – until you realize your legs are forever lost to you, and you yourself are now one of them.
This is just a general overview on creating a given creature, but I think it hits most of the notes to get you started. The big thing I would always consider is what other artists have done, and how they get around the technical issues. You never know, maybe someone else came to the stumbling block first and you can go into greater detail, or consider something you didn’t even think of when you were developing your version of a mythical creature.
EXCERPT ONE:
Echor explored a small rocky cave before he chattered. I saw a fish I'd never seen before. He was orange and white!
"You'll see lots as you travel from place to place," Daphne told the small dolphin. "Come, your mother won't forgive me if I let you roam from the pod."
Why hurry? Echor asked as he swam, spinning around different plants and sponges that grew along the rocks, before focusing in on a vibrant snail. It was not a very old reef, though it was well inhabited by many vividly-colored, small fish. The young dolphin seemed to take pleasure in disturbing them and watching them scurry into their small hiding crevices and among the anemones. You're so lucky that you get to stay in your town all the time. This part of the sea is so beautiful!
"I think it would be neat to see so much of the ocean," Daphne said, thinking of her small town of Thranda. Unlike the dolphins, who often travelled long distances in a single day, most merfolk lived in towns unless they left their communities to hunt or travel to another community. She had known members of his family since she was a little mermaid, and only got to see them a few times a year when they passed through her home to feed in a nearby bay. She heard a series of warnings behind her—the other dolphins had detected something with their echolocation. Unless it was something exceptionally large, they should have been safe within the pod, but Echor was very young. "Echor, let's return to your family." The young dolphin had wandered off while Daphne had turned her head, chasing a seal that had left her bob, trying to swim away from Echor.
"Echor!" Daphne called, swimming after him. She caught up to him, then looked over her shoulder as she heard a familiar sound. An orca! Daphne suppressed a shudder. It was large, but far enough away for her to find a hiding space. Still, killer whales almost always travelled in groups. The killer whale dove when he spotted her. She knew the others would want to help, but they were no match for an orca. He swam quickly towards her and Echor. Daphne knew she would be hard pressed to out-swim the large creature.
Hide! the orca told her.
Daphne then saw the immense shadow and wooden keel of a ship following the orca. The killer whale dove deep, though the water was too clear and shallow to truly hide his massive form. A harpoon followed him, missed, and was quickly pulled back to the surface by a rope. Another harpoon plunged into the water, and then another. The rough waters churned green and grey in the ship's wake, and Echor's warning chatter only told her that there was another human vessel. It came from Daphne's left, and it dragged a net behind it.
GENRE:  Sword and Sorcery / Fantasy
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Koth’s life was decided for him since before he was born, for his ability to heal wounds by touch is rare even among his people. When an attempted kidnapping turns to sacrificial murder, he embraces vengeance and the sword. As he journeys far from his small isolated village in the north, he learns the truth as to why his bloodline is targeted by strange magic, in a world still rebuilding from a time when dark sorcerers didn’t bother with secrecy.

Koth thinks his quest is straightforward enough--find the men responsible, and kill them--and any who aid them. He will soon learn that those who have both privilege and power, there are few things they lack--and in the pursuit of godhood, their allies can prove even more sinister as mere mortals seek to advent empires and dynasties.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT ONE:
“Something’s wrong,” Una said. “Koth, wait here.”
“Why?” If there was a problem, she should be waiting outside for him.
He sensed inside, his aunt’s thoughts remained hidden from him. Una shouted, and he ran inside the building. He thought there were lights on inside, but he saw no candles.
The tea house was very dark, and he felt a sudden dread—he wanted to leave. Baro barked from the outside. ~Una!~  he thought, before something hit his neck.
He knew at once it was a poison dart, and ripping it out he tried to smell what it was. Seeing metal reflect moonlight and he moved his hand, his skin cut. Moving instinctively out of the way, his next reaction was to purge the toxin that coursed through his body and tried to understand the wound. It was mostly his forearm, deep but he could still use it, the bone unaffected. He’d do a better healing later. He focused on something not unlike a burn before going for the knife at his hip. Striking 85 in the next liquid motion, Koth realized he was attacking his aunt.
She grabbed onto his injured flesh and seared it, destroying, weakening the sinew and the cartilage and causing it to age and die, following up the bloodstream, to find the heart and kill. Koth tried to brace; he couldn’t heal and keep her at bay. He was physically stronger and much heavier, but she was weakening his muscles. He tried to wrench the knife from her.
He knocked the blade to the ground then tried to lock minds with her to find nothing short of blinding pain take him over, wrestling him to the ground and making him drop his knife. She took the dagger and when he tried to force himself up, a familiar sense washed over him. Magic, but not coming from Una.
“Do not kill him yet,” Yeshbel said, “we will bleed him first.”
GUEST POST:
What's in a Name? The Pros and Cons of Writing Under a Gender-Neutral Name
I always wanted my work to speak for itself, so going by a penname was obvious.
My name is Leia. The most famous Leia you’ve likely heard about is from this series that’s spanned several movies and spin off shows and… oh, you’ve likely heard of it.
The short answer is that almost everyone besides my mother or huge Star Wars fans spells my name wrong unless they have to write it often. I’ve seen Leila, Leah, Leda, Leta, etc. I’m just kind of used to it by now. (And for the record – it’s pronounced either Lay-ah or Lee-ah. It drives some people bonkers that I go by both interchangeably; I’m used to both). My middle name is Anne (Running with the Leta/Leda/Leila; Leanne shows up every once in a while too). So going with initials ‘L.A.’ sounds like a French or Spanish feminine introduction. I went with T for Thomas. It’s my grandfather’s, father’s, and godson’s middle name, and L.T. at the very worst sounds like a lieutenant.
I think I had more of a hang up about being gender-neutral when I was younger, because I figured most of the stuff I enjoyed reading and playing was aimed more towards males than females, but female gamer and geek culture has become more accepted. I don’t really play any video games much anymore (I’m no longer summoned to beat That Boss) and I’m not ashamed to be a woman and I’ll tell anyone who cares that I’m a chick, but not to expect “women’s fiction” so much as “fiction”. I did notice in our early years of selling books at events, people would often expect my beta reader to be the author of mine and vice versa until he had more titles in print. Ron’s first series was called The Dark Lady and his next book was The Queen’s Pawn he had a girl’s face on the cover of his first novel, whereas I had a warrior on the cover of Tower of Obsidian. I think the assumption was that women write about women and men write about everything else.
I can’t rightly answer about the benefits of having a gender neutral name because it doesn’t take much digging to figure out L.T. Getty is a woman. I have noticed some people didn’t want to take me seriously when I was younger, now I think there are some hang ups about what it is women like to read and what I should be writing, but I think that’s more about market trends and where the money in the industry is.
As for picking a pen name: I was tempted to change my last name, but then I realized in most book stores, G’s are eye level, and I’d not be too far from David Gemmell. My other family names are Cante (once again, not the easiest thing to spell for someone hearing it) Mickey and MacLean. I stuck with Getty.
I considered going with a completely different name for other reasons. I signed my first contract around the time I got my paramedic license going back to school, and I was worried whether or not an employer would see me being a writer as a liability. I was more worried about having my work thrown in my face in my field than I ever was about sexism in the world of publishing. My home Province of Manitoba most industries are very tight knit, and even though it’s a large area people in charge of one area speak to other supervisors and managers, so it was more of a concern about being blacklisted because I was perceived in a certain way. Honestly, it was an unfounded fear.
So that’s how I picked my pen name. Fantasy has plenty of writers who start with initials, so it was an easy choice.
I think if you were to decide on creating a nom de plum, the first consideration is if you want to use one or different names if you write across genres. Let’s pretend that I wanted to write to a very different audience, say, picture books. I could use say, Leah MacLean or Leanne Cante. Leah is still not a common name but that’s a common, easier spelling for the audience. Since I’m also clearly not above stealing other names from the family, I’d look at what I have to work with. I have no problem taking from my grandfathers, but for the sake of simplicity (there are multiple Johns’ and Thomas’) let’s ignore them completely and go to the my maternal grandparents. My grandmothers’ names were Marcia and Violet (I also have a Muriel and a Julia in there if we want to go back further) so let’s pretend I wanted to branch out so say, and write some historical romance. I might play around with initials if that’s what I wanted to go with. Say, Julia McKay, or M.J. Cante.
You’re not limited to using family names, but for me that’s a launching point. What’s easy for you to remember? What sorts of names have meaning for you? Also, what’s it look like when you’re signing the book?
GENRE: Steampunk-Horror
BLURB:
Every decade, Marie must leave her home and everything she loves to start anew. She can’t risk the locals learning the truth of her immortality, much less her vampiric need of feeding off fear. Fortunately for Marie, fear comes easily and she spends her endless days mourning the loss of her beloved.
When she is summoned to the leaders of the masquerade, she is persuaded to assist them in uncovering a mystery of powers possibly more ancient then their own order.
As a rare daywalker of exquisite beauty, there is no society Marie cannot infiltrate. Having spent the last few centuries growing into her abilities, she expects to learn of the old powers, and return to her lonely eternity of mourning.
She doesn’t expect to fall in love.
EXCERPT TWO:
I could smell the inside of the building as being more than simply old and in need of a maid. It smelled of old earth and iron. I sensed nothing out of the ordinary, which told me the devious one likely had means of cloaking. Curious, as most old houses at least had hints of hauntings.
He led me past a set of stairs and into what was probably once a receiving parlor, but he had many dusty tomes and tall bookshelves, and a ladder besides to get to the highest levels. One could not easily get to the furniture, which was draped in ugly fabric. Boxes and crates littered the floor. The cad hadn’t the sense to tidy up and make an effort when he knew he was having a lady visitor.
“How many of your kind are there in town?” Septimus asked. “More than a dozen?”
I laughed, looking up at the ghostly pale portraits. He had strange tastes in art, preferring a more stylized appropriation than realistic or idealized beauty. I saw a reference to ancient gods, destroying towns and descending upon mortal women to force upon them their demi-god offspring. Half-naked women in chains being molested was his true artistic preference, it seemed. I should have brought Rosa. Even if he only dabbled in finger-paints, she needed only half an excuse to show skin, and perhaps I could have rooted around and discovered what he was up to without his condescension.
“As…we like to keep to ourselves and go without detection, it is more like half that.” I didn’t bore him of the needs of the lesser of my kin. “Have you had many run-ins with my kind?”
“I was curious about how you go about feeding without being detected.” He turned his back on me and lit the fire almost too easily.
GUEST POST:
5 Healthy Snacks for Beating Writer’s Block
Not gonna lie – this is more of a reflection on my lifestyle than what I do differently when I write. Writing is very sedentary, so besides making healthy choices it’s not a bad idea to put a timer on when you write and not forget to get up and stretch or go for a little walk. Here’s several foods I like to make ahead of time, so it makes picking healthy choices easier.
1.)  Home Made Chia Pudding: I prefer a small/medium size mason jar, that way I can take them on the go. Flavors can be whatever you like – featured here was one made out of a spirulina powder that was designed to make a latte, so I didn’t need to add sugar but if you make yours with matcha or acai powder you can control the sweetness. The main problem with the mason jars is that, as seen, the chia seeds can some times not mix well at the bottom, so be sure to look them over from the bottom and mix thoroughly. The dog, by the way, is my pal Dodger.
2.)  Smoothie Bowl: I was super skeptical when I discovered smoothie bowls. I’d already be on the green smoothie kick for quite some time, and I thought few things were easier than mindlessly drinking a smoothie on the go. Sometimes, eating needs to be mindful and besides switching the recipe, putting toppings on it can change the experience, as well if you’re eating with a spoon you’re not just letting a half-drank smoothie ferment on the table because you’re writing a scene you’re into.
3.)  Carrots and Celery: Yeah yeah, what’s so innovative about this? For me, if I come in after a busy shift I’m usually ravenous, and will reach for the first thing I see. I used to prep mangos and strawberries so I didn’t toss three cookies down my gullet when I was making supper. I was watching a video on healthy eating and prepping and the suggestion was to prep carrots and celery. I did it, thinking it would be for work and now I want a jar at home and another one for the work fridge. Not only are the carrots peeled and ready to go, the water makes the celery crispy! I like to have them with hummus, but they’re nice on their own, too. Anyone got a good homemade hummus recipe?
4.)  Energy Balls: So what are you going to do with those leftover bits from trying to make your home made cashew milk? I hate wasting food and although I will toss the almost and cashew ‘flour’ into oatmeal and other baking I wanted an alternative for the summer months. I first encountered energy balls, made of nut butters and essentially trail mix up in a little place called Onanole, Manitoba where they called them “Owl Balls”. I usually make them with whatever I have on hand: leftover almond flour, chia seeds, honey, tahini, basically if it goes in a trail mix and I can roll it into a little ball, it’s a possibility.
5.)  Skip the Starbucks: Okay, I like writing in coffee shops, but can we all admit that the drinks can get a little sugary? Making them at home saves you time and cash, but really lets you dial in the sugar. Plus, does Starbucks have hilarious chicken glasses? I made an iced matcha latte, and although I’m not a huge coffee drinker I’ve been experimenting with freezing coffee into ice cubes and serving with homemade hemp milk and a little bit of caramel or vanilla flavouring. I get to control the sugar or syrup, so I can control the nutrition.
It’s not always easy to eat healthy, and sometimes, you get so caught up in something you’re ravenous when you finally finish a scene or you’re so busy you just want to eat something so you can get to the writing. Making healthy choices is not only about having stuff prepped, but a mindset that your body has physical as well nutritional needs. If you feel like you’re in a rut, switch it up: for instance, I love oatmeal, but I don’t want to eat it every day. Some days I put in apples, others, raisins and nut butters as well as seeds. Little changes, such as using fresh herbs and spices can go a long way in adding flavour to staples as opposed to slathering on sugary or oily sauces or other condiments.
Got any healthy recipes you’d like me to try?
