Teardown by William Campbell Powell - Book Tour - Guest Post - Giveaway - Enter Daily!

Teardown
by William Campbell Powell

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   LGBT+ Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BOOK BLURB:

Growing up in a dead-end, Thames Valley town like Marden Combe, Kai knows there’s no escape without a lot of talent, hard work—and luck.

Two weeks before the Clayton Paul Blues Band plans to set out on tour to Germany, their singer quits, and drummer Kai takes matters in hand. With bandmates Jake and Jamie, they recruit a talented new singer—the enigmatic Dominique—as the new face of the band and set out on the road to Berlin in a rickety white van.

Dogged by mishaps and under-rehearsed, the band stumbles through their first shows, zig-zagging between chaos and brilliance. But as the first gig in Berlin draws near, the band begins to gel. They’re clicking with their audience, and even the stone-hearted Kai starts to crumble under the spell, first of Dom and then…of Lars.

As the end of the tour approaches, Kai must make hard choices. Dom? But she’s keeping a dark secret. Lars? Not after the acrimony of their last parting. The band? Or will that dream crumble too?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT ONE:
The bus stank of commuters. It wasn’t like a night bus, granted, but the mix of sweat and cheap scent—and the pungency of diesel—was another reminder of how much I hated Marden Combe.
A Thames Valley town like every other Thames Valley town, Marden Combe had a posh, blingy bit, where the bankers, footballers, and celebrity chefs lived. The rest ran the spectrum from dilapidated through demolished to barely affordable modern rabbit hutches. The old town centre was closing down, and the new shopping centre was gridlock hell.
The bus lurched and swung left, past a school named for a long-dead parliamentarian. Or possibly a royalist. I ought to know; it had been my old school till I’d turned sixteen. But it had all seemed irrelevant to the more immediate problem of not getting picked on for being different. There were a dozen ways and more to be different, whether it was for being too ugly, too geeky, too slow on the uptake, too shy, too dark, not dark enough, having a funny accent, or a fundy religion, or being neurodivergent, being too posh, being too poor, liking the wrong music, or football team, or playing oddball sports, or using last year’s tech; not liking girls, not liking boys, not liking either, liking both. Plus others, plus combinations. By more than one marker, I was weird, and I hadn’t always kept my head down. But there’d definitely been no bullying at Sir Long-Dead-Parliamentarian School. Or Royalist, as the case may be. Oh no.
That didn’t come close to summing up the suffocating, hope-crushing, soul-sucking, shit-brown hole that is Marden Combe. I needed to escape.
If I had a plan, it was that music would save me…
GUEST POST:
What is your favorite motivational phrase and how do you apply it your writings? Life? Etc.?
Hi, and thank you for inviting me to write about my favourite motivational phrase. I didn’t have to think hard about it – it’s a phrase that has been a part of my work ethos for most of my working life, though I formulated it comparatively recently:
“Push my boundaries”
Ten years ago I had just heard that my debut novel – Expiration Day – had won a minor award, and would I like to go to the annual World Science Fiction Convention in Spokane, WA. No, it wasn’t one of the big awards, so I’d have to pay for my own flight, accommodation and convention membership. But, why not? It was the first in a lifetime opportunity, and it might be the once in a lifetime opportunity.
The slight softening of the blow was learning that membership was half-price if I went on at least 5 panels. There were a few obvious ones – e.g. Hard SF for Teens – but for the rest? So I wrote “push my boundaries” on the form – that was the first time I’d used the phrase – and hit ‘send’.
And then I waited, to see what they’d pick for me.
Oh. Poetry in SF. That would probably have been bottom of my list. But I had written a little poetry for Expiration Day, so … yeah! Go for it! Push My Boundaries!!
And the poetry panel came, and I offered stats and my opinions on poetry in SF. I read out one of my poems to an OK response. PMB.
And then it was over. At which point my neighbour on the panel turned to me and said to me “You’re William Campbell Powell. Author of Expiration Day, right?” and I agreed, wondering where this was going. “I’d like to make an audiobook of Expiration Day.”
Wow!
And so it came to be – but he’d never have come across my book if I hadn’t been on that panel. He only bought it because it was in my bio and we were on the panel. PMB for the Win!
There’s another formulation for PMB that I like. It’s not as catchy as PMB, but it’s served me well in my career in software development. It’s “When asked, say yes”. In most of my roles, at some time I’ve been propositioned thus: “We hired you for your skills in X, but we need you now to learn Y.”
It’s meant I’ve never got stale in my career. It’s meant that when one role goes sour, or redundancy looms, I’ve got a breadth of skills to fall back on.
And in my writing life, PMB has helped me explore new genres. There’s no manual for writing an enby romance. There’s precious little acknowledgement in fiction that non-binary people exist, let alone that they can be the main character. PMB. From early on, I realised that I was going to have to write a whole novel – Teardown – without ever using a pronoun to reference Kai. PMB. I had to build a mental picture of Kai that excluded any overt sexual characteristics. PMB.
So how can you push your boundaries today?
My Comps for the Book:
The novel combines elements of LGBTQIA+ romance with Road Trip fiction, and - with its focus on music - might sit alongside Taylor Jenkins Reid’s ‘Daisy Jones and the Six’ (2016) or Dawnie Walton’s ‘The Final Revival of Opal & Nev’ (2022), or - with its focus on (Kai's) gender-ambiguity and relationships - near Camille Perry’s ‘When Katie Met Cassidy’ (2018) or Beth O’Leary’s ‘The Road Trip’ (2022).
One USP:
The book is about a band and contains original songs, for which I have created demos – see/listen:
The Search for Sasha Lockwood by Thomas Grant Bruso - Book Tour - Blurb Blitz - Giveaway - Enter Daily!
The Search for Sasha Lockwood
by Thomas Grant Bruso
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE:    Horror, LGBT, Mystery

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BOOK BLURB:
Something is stalking the campgrounds at Pine Hill Creek.
Rumor has it that local folklore about the notorious Bigfoot is responsible for the mystery of a missing young woman.
When eighteen-year-old high school senior Sasha Lockwood vanishes without a trace while camping with her friends, fear and horror sequester a small community. Local and federal law enforcement officers begin an exhausting twenty-four-hour investigation of seventy acres of vast forest, looking for the victim.
The tight-knit community is in an uproar, horrified by these unexpected events. An unrelenting sheriff’s department and a media-savage system doggedly interrogate Sasha’s parents and close friends.
What happened the night Sasha Lockwood disappeared? Is it real or part of a cruel joke? Is Bigfoot responsible, or is something sinister at play in the deep, dark woods?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT TWO:

Silver Lake Woman Still Missing

Search efforts by Bedwell County Sheriff’s Department to locate local girl Sasha Lockwood, 18, continue after a 24-hour search and rescue mission.

Sheriff Joshua Bronson, with the help of his deputy sheriff, Wade Rosen, and state police, has combed the entire five-acre campsite of Pine Hill Creek in search of the young college girl who went missing during a camping excursion over the weekend.

Due to weather conditions, the search has slowed. It will resume when the snowstorm abates in the upstate New York region of Bedwell County.

Lockwood is described as 5-foot-6, 145 pounds, with green eyes and curly amber hair. Athletic, muscular build.

She was last seen on Saturday, October 15. A white Subaru was spotted in Silver Lake Woods, a half mile from where Ms. Lockwood and her friends were camping.

Bedwell County Sheriff’s Department and state police are asking for anyone with information to come forward or contact the Bedwell County Sheriff’s Department or state police.

Scars and Secrets by Thomas Grant Bruso - Book Tour - Blurb Blitz - Giveaway - Enter Daily!

Scars and Secrets
by Thomas Grant Bruso

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   LGBT Mystery
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BOOK BLURB:

Ralph Ashton gets more than he bargained for when police question him about the death of his ex-boyfriend Elijah Ray, whose body is discovered at the edge of the Saranac River.

When the local police visit Ralph and ask him about a critical piece of case evidence, Ralph becomes a prime suspect. He sets out to learn what happened to Eli the night he left his apartment and is startled to learn about his former boyfriend’s shady past.

As Ralph pursues a dangerous investigation, he discovers things about Eli he did not know while they were together.

Ralph’s life starts to unravel when he loses more people close to him as his mother lies in a hospital bed dying of cancer. Is learning about the truth of Eli’s death worth jeopardizing his safety?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT ONE:
The Saranac River empties into the mouth of Lake Champlain and a sliver of late-evening sun shimmies and slices across shavings of broken ice like a school of shiny fish.
I straighten the blue-and-white striped silk tie my last boyfriend gifted me and stare out at the early November landscape. The ground is dusted with newly fallen snow, and the river, a swollen malignant serpentine of icy water, snakes through a vista of evergreens and sycamores.
I catch my hard stare in the reflection of the large picture window of my therapist’s office.
Dr. James Matheson, basketball tall with peacock-blue eyes and warm brown skin, dressed in a rosy-pink dress shirt and charcoal-gray suit, coaxes me back to the present. His voice is butter soft and attractive, musically inclined and bilingual. Spanish on his mother’s side, I think.
My thoughts unravel like vines on a branch, disoriented, a broken fuse box with faulty wiring. I blow out a loud breath and turn to the long-legged and handsome therapist, my hands packed in the pockets of my khakis so he won’t see them shake. Men make me nervous and weak-kneed.
Dr. Matheson is patient and smiling, waiting for me to speak, to say something, since I’ve been standing in silence for the last fifteen minutes, staring out at the dismal day passing by.
I think about my mother who lies in the hospital dying. I’ve just come from visiting her, before my scheduled therapy session. Dr. Matheson wants to discuss it, from his stone silence and sensitive stares.
I glance at my wristwatch. I’ve been in Pretty Boy’s office for almost an hour, and I haven’t said much or given the good old doc enough to judge or dislike me or cancel my next session. I am surprised he has not asked me not to come back. Maybe he’ll call County Hospital and admit me to the psych ward on the fourth floor if I open my mouth and let him into my dark, sad life.
He does not reach for the phone. He sits poised in the high brown leather chair behind his polished cherry wood desk, with many medical certifications on the wall behind him.
He stares across the room at me, grins, keeping a professional manner, waiting for me to give him his money and time’s worth.
I drag myself toward the overstuffed leather chair across from his desk and collapse into it, as if it is my home base.
The Family That Finds Us by Phoenix Blackwood - Book Tour - Guest Post - Giveaway - Enter Daily!
The Family That Finds Us
by Phoenix Blackwood
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE:  LGBTQIA+ Coming of Age

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BOOK BLURB:
Phee hides her secrets well, until they become too much to bear. Her biggest secret is one she’s kept even from herself. Her longest-kept secret is one that hurts her every day. Her final secret is one that will set her free.
In a school that doesn’t accept them, Phee, Theo, and Alex fight for a community close to their hearts. The community desperately needs the trio to help the rest of them leave the shadows without fear of violence and discrimination. Through some heroic activism, the three push the school officials to their limits — forcing them to act — for better or worse.
For Phee, the fight for a place where she can be herself doesn’t stop when she gets home. The strain of taking care of her alcoholic and abusive mother threatens to break Phee away from her family bond forever. Her mother can go from a messy drunk to an angry one in an instant, turning Phee’s home life from an obligation to a war zone.
Theo’s house offers respite to Phee. With compassion scarce in her life, Alex and Theo are Phee’s light in the dark. They protect and cherish her. At Theo’s, Phee is free to be herself and explore her identity safely — her chosen family ready to catch her if she falls. That’s what family does, how family finds us when we feel lost and alone.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT ONE:

“Thank you, my preciou-ous-es son.” She slurred her words as she spoke into the table, and I sighed inaudibly.

At least she wasn’t angry-drunk. This was the drunk I could handle, the drunk I knew how to care for. I’d been doing it half my life, it would be strange if I weren’t good at it by now. I finished the dishes and laid them out on the drying rack after wiping them dry with a kitchen towel, then sat down in the chair next to her at the table.

“Do you need anything, mom? Have you eaten? Drank anything?”

“Mmno.” She rolled her face to look at me, her deep dark eyes glistening but not completely there.

I got a plastic cup from the cupboard and filled it with some ice water and handed it to her. Her hands shook as she tried to lift the cup from mine, so I helped her guide it to her mouth and take a couple sips, then set it back down on the table in front of her. I rummaged through the fridge to pull out some milk and went to the pantry for some cereal. Only, as lifted the milk to pour, I felt objects hit the side of the carton. I opened the cap to take a whiff and gagged; the milk was sour. Sighing, I dropped the carton into the trash and opened the barren fridge to search for another option.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GUEST POST:
My favorite scene in The Family that Finds Us has to be the scene about mid-to-late book where Theo’s triggered by the school principal yelling in their face and runs off, without Alex or Phee knowing where they’re going. Alex starts to panic, her mind going to all the worst places as she and Phee run out of the school to try and find them. Phee keeps a cool head under pressure, and makes a plan with Alex to spread out and search. Alex runs towards home, Phee goes to check the skate park. As Phee is running past the woods behind the school, she remembers something that Theo had told her earlier – about how the forest was a safe place for them, they could hide and no one would find them. With Phee’s gut urging her to try, she runs into the woods while dialing Theo’s number.
Phee starts to hear Theo’s ringtone as she gets deeper into the woods, confirming her thought as she runs farther. She stops when the tone is at its loudest, dumbfounded and looking around anywhere for the phone as Theo’s nowhere in sight, until she looks up. Theo’s climbed the tree above, and Phee less than gracefully climbs to the branch where Theo’s sitting.
Theo’s lost deep in a panic attack, and Phee isn’t sure what to do at first. Theo’s never shown her this side of them. Phee knew Theo could get like this from knowing of their history and how Alex interacts with them sometimes, but she’s never actually seen it. She then remembers what Alex had told her once about Theo’s panic attacks, that a lot of things people usually do don’t help, and that she would just hold them and talk to them through it. Phee’s afraid at first, not wanting to encroach on the boundaries of their friendship, but she knows that she has to do something – Theo’s breathing is erratic, they’re wheezing with tears running down their cheeks.
Lovingly, Phee draws Theo in, squeezing them tight. They cry, and eventually relax into her. Phee fights back her own tears – she hates the amount of pain Theo’s in. She’d do anything to make it better. Eventually, Theo’s able to regain some lucidity, and hugs Phee back while taking a few deep breaths and wiping their eyes. They’re both able to climb down from the tree, and they talk for a bit afterwards.
This scene perfectly demonstrates all the love and care Phee has for Theo, how she still views them as strong and admires them even in a moment of weakness. I think it shows how strong people can still be vulnerable, and how even the most independent people still need someone to have their back, to notice the little things about them and respond to their needs. It shows how important their friendship is to both of them.
Belega by Dianne Hartsock - Book Tour - Exclusive Excerpt - Giveaway - Enter Daily!
Belega
by Dianne Hartsock
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE:   Erotic Fantasy Romance (M/M)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BOOK BLURB:
The Karthagans have regained their ancient powers of manipulating nature, but at the price of madness. In their lust for control, they've destroyed their island and most of their race. They come now to Belega, where one of them, Camron, seeks domination over the known world. The Mage has come from the northern continent of Sennia to bring peace but finding his strength no match for the coming struggle, he passes his abilities on to Natan, who only desires a simple life.
Now only Natan has the ability to stop Camron, but the personal cost is more than he imagines. It is only with the combined strength of his friends, his Karthagan lover, Kavi, and his deep desire to bring lasting peace to the earth, that he finds the courage to overcome Camron and restore balance to the world.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT:

Something wasn’t right. They rode close on Bryon’s heels as the soldier unerringly followed Camron’s trail, but Natan felt an urgent pull toward the east, as if the earth itself called to him in anguish. He slowed his horse, listening, then called out to the others before turning into the forest. He needed to see what Camron had done.

Dread and anger crept into his heart as he rode between the trees. He knew what he would find over the ridge. He’d dreamed of it many times, the torn earth, twisted trees, and bloody ground. Fury blinded him, so he drew his horse to a walk, fighting the desire to chase Camron to the ground. He could easily rip the world apart in that instant if it would give him Camron. How he would make the Karthagan suffer!

His horse snorted and came to a stop. A shudder passed through its large frame. Natan slid from the saddle, holding onto the pommel to steady his shaking body. He was vaguely aware of Kavi slipping from his horse and stumbling to his side as he entered the horror waiting in the glen.

It was as if a child in the throes of temper had been there. The green earth was heaved into rocky mounds. Deep pits of bubbling tar rose to the surface. A hundred trees had been snapped at the trunk and hurled in all directions. Small animals lay where they’d burst apart from an intense pressure on their tender bodies.

Natan grew ill as the nightmare overwhelmed his senses. He wanted nothing more than to crush Camron in his hands, make him feel the pain of the poor creatures dead on the bloody soil.

He fought a rising panic in his breast that seemed to snatch at his breath. He couldn’t fight that way. He mustn’t fight that way! Sobs choked in his throat. He didn’t know what to do. Kavi’s whimper at his side broke him. He moved to take him in his arms in a sudden desperate need for human contact. He was in agony.

“Don’t,” Kavi moaned, horror in his gaze, and pulled from Natan’s clasp. Natan dropped his arms instantly. He couldn’t take on Kavi’s pain as well. He turned from him and lurched across the broken earth, brushing into Kirstin.

“Kavi needs you,” he managed to say, and would have passed her, but she touched his face. He cried out as her fingers burned his skin. “No!” He jerked his head away.

Dianne grew up in one of the older homes in the middle of Los Angeles, a place of hardwood floors and secret closets and back staircases. A house where ghosts lurk in the basement and the faces in the paintings watch you walk up the front stairs. Rooms where you keep the closet doors closed tight at night. It’s where her love of the mysterious and wonderful came from. Dianne is the author of m/m romance, paranormal/suspense, fantasy adventure, the occasional thriller, and anything else that comes to mind.

She now lives in the beautiful Willamette Valley of Oregon with her incredibly patient husband, who puts up with the endless hours she spends hunched over the keyboard letting her characters play. Dianne says Oregon’s raindrops are the perfect setting in which to write. There’s something about being cooped up in the house with a fire crackling on the hearth and a cup of hot coffee in her hands, which kindles her imagination.

Currently, Dianne works as a floral designer in a locally-owned gift shop. Which is the perfect job for her. When not writing, she can express herself through the rich colors and textures of flowers and foliage.

Secrets of a Gay Man Growing Up in the 1950s by Jonathan Feinn - Book Tour - Blurb Blitz - Giveaway - Enter Daily!

Secrets of a Gay Man Growing Up in the 1950s

by Jonathan Feinn

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   Memoir
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BOOK BLURB:

The Blessing of Self -Acceptance

I decided to write my memoir when I reached my mid-eighties. Given the gift of longevity, I felt a strong need to review my life openly and to recall both the joyful moments as well as the days and nights of feeling anguish and hopelessness. Highlighting events and experiences in my life has given me the opportunity to better understand the emotional and physical cost over the years of denying the person I am and the pain of self-rejection.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT THREE:
My travels broadened my perspective to better understand the cultural differences among peoples in the world but just as important was my increasing awareness all peoples strive to fulfill similar hopes and dreams.
Among the important learnings for me was to become aware I could travel independently and was significantly more adaptable than I had thought. I was aware of my openness and desire to learn from others and developed a major respect for the different ways people strive to meet their challenges in life.   I’m grateful to so many for their hospitality and openness in allowing me to learn and to share in differing customs and traditions, some which were quite different from my own experiences.
My new perspectives led to feelings of deep respect and appreciation for all that I learned. I now know differences in language can be managed and handled and people everywhere share the same significant life tasks including the need to feel accepted and loved as they are; to find satisfaction in their work, to find love within their family and community and a hope their children will have opportunities to fulfill their potential.
I’m grateful to the Thai family I lived with for a year who were so generous and caring and respectful to me. The parents were professionals and had two young children. They kindly shared their home with Sung Wien who cared for the home and the children and prepared the evening meal for us each day consisting of many different dishes. I’m deeply appreciative of the Sri Lankan family I’ve known for more than 30 years who now live in Paris. I’ve known their three young adult children since their early childhood and am grateful for their on-going love. It brings special joy to me.
Trigger warning: this story addresses suicide and suicidal ideation.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT ONE:

My work boots clipped across the newly polished floor, squeaking with each determined step toward the security guard’s office in the back of the mall. I didn’t usually get frightened, but after the week’s events of Jacob Adler’s murder and my recurring hallucinations, I was on guard twenty-four-seven. The wall I’d built after Steve died sent me into a tailspin. I lost my self-confidence to “live on -- move on,” as Steve had put it. Getting out of bed was the most challenging part of the day, getting started. But not as difficult as being a suspect in somebody else’s murder.

I locked up in the office, hung my jacket on the wall peg along with my badge, fastened my uniform hat on top of my coat, and secured the building. I walked around the side of the shopping center to get to my truck, which was parked near the auto shop garage in the adjacent lot. My keys clanged against the side of my uniform work belt.

There was a crispness to the air as it gusted across my face.

When I reached my truck, I stopped and glanced at the imposing three-floor structure of the Rushford Shopping Mall. It had been a game-changer, I told myself. When my life was at its lowest, the job as mall security had saved me. Moving from upstate New York to Vermont and being hired at a stone’s throw distance from where everything had bottomed out of my life, life could not be better. I had to keep reminding myself that I was lucky. This was meant to be.

I was living. No – I was surviving the best way I knew how. The sharp gust of wind filled my eyes with a deep sadness.

I slipped my key into the driver’s side door. I jumped inside, cranking the station to a country song I knew Steve would roll his eyes at, but his enthusiastic expression brightened my mood. I sat in the quiet interior of my truck, my head falling against the headrest, my eyes closing to the welcoming solitude. I drummed my hands on the bottom of the steering wheel.
