The Cherry Trees of Rosings by Morgan Blake - Book Tour - Giveaway - Enter Daily!

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Morgan Blake will be awarding a $20 Amazon OR Barnes and Noble Gift Card (Winner's Choice!!!) to a randomly drawn winner. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

A Pride & Prejudice variation with a slightly paranormal, mainly comic twist!

When Elizabeth Bennet visits her newly-married friend, Charlotte Collins, at the Hunsford parsonage, she has no idea that Mr. Darcy (he of the arrogant demeanor and perpetual cause of annoyance!) shall turn up to ruin her blissful, idyllic days.

Only, Mr. Darcy is not himself. And then Elizabeth stumbles straight through him one day... like one would an apparition! Goodness gracious!

“Mr. Darcy, I do not know what you mean, but I would appreciate it if you would desist from haunting me!”

“I apologize, Miss Bennet, for scaring you,” Mr. Darcy said, almost regretfully.

To solve her haunting problem, Elizabeth must team up with Mr. Darcy to find out what happened to him, and along the way discover that maybe he is not all that he seemed at first. And that maybe... she doesn’t hate him after all.

“You wish to write the letter now?” he asked as she moved past him with the candle.

“Well, to be honest,” she glanced at him. “I would prefer to sleep. But since you are here, I do not see why not.”

From the antics of Lady Catherine de Bourgh to the hilarity of Mr. Collins’ advice on staying fit, The Cherry Trees of Rosings shall make you laugh and cry in equal measure. And wonder: Will our favourite couple find their happy ever after?

Spoiler: Yes, they will!

This Pride and Prejudice variation features our favourite Regency romance couple from Jane Austen's original classic in a somewhat spooky setup. ✨ But fear not, dear readers! ✨ This story is not scary in the least. Prepare for a chuckle fest and abundant cups of tea!

EXCERPT ONE:

“Mr. Collins, you know how I despise green beans!”

Lady Catherine’s brows drew down with annoyance as she looked over the tiny list Charlotte had handed her a few moments ago. It was about the gift baskets the Collinses were tasked with distributing for Easter; one of the yearly tasks of the parsonage.

“You shall not present that vegetable to the congregation,” she emphasized, mouth twisting into a moue of distaste.

Mr. Collins nodded his head vigorously. “Indeed, your ladyship.”

“Potatoes will do very well. Very well, indeed…”

More head nodding from her cousin.

Elizabeth held back a chuckle as the spectacle unfolded before her.

She had been somewhat right in her estimation of Lady Catherine from Mr. Collins’ extensive effusions. But once the introductions were made, she was pleasantly surprised to find that the great lady was even more ridiculous than she had imagined. Her father would be dearly entertained by such human folly once she wrote to him.

“Potatoes are vegetables for the hard-working,” Lady Catherine continued sagely. Then she picked up a cream tart from the platter before her and bit into it.

“You are quite right, your ladyship, as always,” Mr. Collins said. “I merely wished to place the beans in the baskets for the sick—”

“You should speak on the virtues of potatoes in your sermon, Mr. Collins,” the lady said, dusting off the crumbs from her fingers before fixing a glare on her parson.

Jane Austen Lied to Me by Jeanette Watts - Book Tour - Guest Post - Giveaway - Enter Daily!

Jane Austen Lied to Me
by Jeanette Watts

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   Romantic Comedy Audiobook
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BOOK BLURB:

What college girl doesn’t dream of meeting Mr. Darcy? Lizzy was certainly no exception. But when Darcy Fitzwilliam comes into her life, he turns out to be every bit as aggravating as Elizabeth Bennett’s Fitzwilliam Darcy. So what’s a modern girl to think, except....

How could my hero be so wrong?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT ONE:
Sept 5
Well!  That was interesting.  My roommate invited me along to this frat party she was going to.  She went through something called rush week, and she is now pledged to a sorority.  She said the frats are less formal than the sororities, and even though I wasn’t a pledge I could go with her.  I figured, why not, it should be fun, right?
I got to meet the guy she’s chasing.  I couldn’t blame her for being interested.  He’s cute, and sweet, and considerate, and a total people-pleaser.  One of his parents must be the demanding sort who is never happy.
He introduced us to his friend… whose name is Darcy Fitzwilliam!  I wasn’t sure at first that the guy wasn’t just pulling our legs.
“Your mother obviously loves Jane Austen,” I laughed.
“Obviously,” he answered.  Not much to go by.
“I love Pride and Prejudice,” I continued.
“I hate Pride and Prejudice,” I can only describe the look he was giving me as hostile.
“I think you will find yourself very much in a minority,” I answered, returning his look with one of my own.
We didn’t talk any more that night.  Talk about getting off on the wrong foot!
GUEST POST:
Inspired by Headlines: How to Put Your Spin on Real Life Events
I absolutely adore fitting current events into my stories!
Usually, my books are historical fiction. Wealth and Privilege and Brains and Beauty are set in Pittsburgh between 1875 and 1889, I relied heavily on newspapers in the process of researching both books, and I use the current events I found to tell my readers where in time we are.
For example, the railroad riots of 1877 started in Pittsburgh on July 21. Garfield’s assassination in 1881. (July is clearly a good month for bad things happening. In January of 1885, the Liberty Bell really did pass through Pittsburgh on its way to the World’s Fair in New Orleans. When I needed to kill off a character, why just have some random fake accident, when there was the Washburn A mill explosion in Minneapolis? And of course I talk about the Johnstown flood.
These are all real events, in real time, and they tell my readers precisely what the date is, besides being the most awesome world-building. I learned this from Margaret Mitchell and Gone With the Wind: why make things up when my characters can be perpetually running for their lives through hair-raising real historical events?
I expanded this in Brains and Beauty to include events beyond the headlines: the heroine sings music from the latest Gilbert and Sullivan operetta. In both books, I frequently use clothing. What would a man’s reaction have been the first time he sees the radical change in women’s fashion in 1877, and for the first time in 50 years, skirts hugged along a woman’s hips and thighs?
My other modern novel, A Woman’s Persuasion, is sent in 2007. I chose the dates specifically because of current events. I used the crash of 2007 is a catalyst for the story, to mirror the financial troubles of the characters in Jane Austen’s Persuasion.
For Jane Lied to Me I had to very consciously make the opposite choices. Jane Austen’s stories are very timeless, in order to embrace that I wanted to say as little as possible about time and place, even as I emulated her trick of saying as little as possible about each character’s appearance. (What color ARE “fine eyes?”)
The story is about the all-American girl, set on an undefined college campus.
Is this campus in the Midwest? In the south? New York state? In Colorado? Arizona? Minnesota? I never discuss the landscape, or describe the buildings. This could be an Ivy League school, a little private school, or a big university sprawling across miles. I wanted people to be able to see their own college in their mind’s eye as they are reading.
This also applies to the time. All the markers I usually use to tell everyone when this is, I carefully avoided. I tried to stay as vague as I could about the clothing although I am taking a gamble of high heeled shoes are not going to go away anytime soon. When the characters go to concerts, it’s to hear Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, or a group with a long-running history (Metallica). My heroine has jobs at the school library and McDonald’s.
I do not bring up any current events. There are no news stories, no references to any events going on at all. I was trying to uncouple the story from a specific place in history.
I like to think, for the most part, I succeeded. The thing that is going to date most rapidly, and set it within a timeframe, is the technology. Phones and laptops change. At least, for now, people still use their phones to text back-and-forth, although I have had any number of conversations entirely over Snapchat, or Discord, or Messenger, or Marco Polo. So plain ol’ text may already be in danger of feeling dated. At least, for now, students still get online to register for classes, right?
GENRE:   Sci-Fi
BOOK BLURB:
Lonely Regency romance writer travels to the future, meets her fans, dips into a pearly swimming pool, and falls for its owner. Can she ever go home again…
If Jane Austen’s novels had never ever existed, would we have rom-com movies and women’s fiction? But the young writer is discouraged by a publisher’s rejection and ready to give up writing. And an unwelcome marriage proposal she has rashly accepted spells her doom.
Someone must save history and Jane Austen! When a stranger calls and claims to be an interested publisher, a desperate Jane agrees to go with him to his office. That office turns out to be in the future. And it's not an office, but a bookstore in southern California in 2024 where fans of Jane Austen gather every month to discuss her works.
Jane greets the Jane Austen Superfan Club, only to find that superfans can be super picky. Discouraged by their critiques, Jane wants different adventures. Even deadly, dangerous ones. And oh, yes! Romantic ones.
Her “publisher” had hoped to inspire Jane’s writing by showing her a book club devoted to her writing. But when she meets a tall, handsome superfan, Jane decides to chart her own course. She disappears with her new friend, and history may have to save itself …
EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT:
Will stood and extended his hand to her. “Shall we?”
She repressed the words. I should infinitely prefer a book. Her dismay tumbled out. “Oh, no! That kind of … dancing ... I couldn’t. Not with so many strangers!”
He shook his head, smiling. His hand still insisted. “You’re not turning me down? If you venture onto the floor with me, I will show you three simple steps. You can follow them or stand still. Raise one hand in the air. We can call whatever you do dancing. So, shall we?”
How could she turn down the man whose blue eyes seemed to pin her into a world she wanted more than the one she had left behind? It would be rude to refuse. They were looking at her, smiles pleasant but quick to be disappointed if she really said no.
Her face flushed fiercely. Despite the gentle evening breeze, the impulse seized her. She rose, took his hand, and let Will lead her to the floor. Jane held onto his hand as he stepped onto it and swayed gently, holding her gaze. But until he reached out his other hand for hers, she had not fully decided. Putting her hand into his, she stepped onto the floor. She knew not what step to take next, but lent herself to Will’s lead.
The deep rhythms thrummed in her limbs, pungent as the scents on the evening air, the Margarita Punch, and Will’s gaze. Gazing up at him was easy now in this dim light. The musicians shifted to another tune, livelier even, all rhythm and little melody, but rounded and warm like she felt now.
“Do you like this?” Will leaned over to ask, his voice low so as not to be overheard.
She smiled with abandon. “I love it!” His touch anchored her. The beam in his eye was a lighthouse on a dark sea.
Jane Austen Lied to Me
by Jeanette Watts
GENRE:  Romantic Comedy
BLURB:
Dear Diary,
In three years of college, there are seven times my life seemed to suddenly turn into a Jane Austen novel; seven times my life, instead of becoming a romance, turned into a made-for-TV drama.
What am I doing wrong?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT:

Feb 28

I’ve been thinking about my conversation with Professor Jacobson over and over.  The thing about formulas and people.  It makes a certain kind of sense, but does it lack a romantic sensibility?

Ha!  Sense and Sensibility!

This is the second time that Professor Jacobson has me thinking about S&S. Well, if I’m no Lizzie Bennett, there are worse things in life than being a Marianne Dashwood.  She had youth and beauty and high spirits.  She wasn’t good at the dating thing, either, and overlooked the better man at first.  Why was that?  Did Colonel Brandon seem unromantic at first impression?

Even though I’ve got an assignment due in Spanish, as well as the inevitable calc and chem homework, I grabbed Sense and Sensibility to take with me to read while I went to dinner. I wanted to read everything in the book about Colonel Brandon.

Anne spotted me in the dining hall while I was halfway through a tuna sandwich and a really big pile of potato chips.  “Hey, Roomie.” She slid her cafeteria tray onto the table across from me and plopped her book bag down beside it.  “You having a really bad day?”

“Um, no I don’t think so, why?” I asked.

“Usually, if you’re having a bad day, you pick up Jane Austen and read a little something before you start to study.  Since instead of sitting here doing your homework, you’re sitting here reading Jane Austen, I take it you had an exceptionally bad day today.”

Colonel Brandon's Widow and Willoughby
by Marianna Green

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Romance Historical Jane Austen Sequel
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Mrs. Brandon, the former Marianne Dashwood, is now a widow, and not yet twenty-five.

Her former admirer Willoughby is as unhappily married as ever, and the thought that she is free to marry again drives him to distraction. He has continued in his dissolute lifestyle, which Marianne abhors, while his wife Sophia's life has been poisoned by jealousy of Marianne.

Marianne urges him that the only possibility of happiness for Willoughby and his wife is for him to give up his empty pursuit of pleasure - but now the Colonel is gone, Marianne finds that she can no longer push aside thoughts of Willoughby easily herself; she must find some way of occupying her own empty hours. Willoughby retains his rascally charm, which an older and wiser Marianne is determined to resist; Elinor and Edward are as astute as ever, while Sir John and Lady Middleton are as foolish. Mrs. Jennings remains determined to marry off all her associates as before, while Sophia Willoughby is even more sour as the wife of the man she wanted, and Willoughby's friends are suitably cynical rakes.

This sequel to Jane Austen's 'Sense and Sensibility' strives to emulate some of the light ironic touch of the inimitable style of Jane Austen; it is both funny and sad, and is told as dark comedy.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT ONE:
The union of the Willoughbys’ only resembled that of the Brandons’ in being childless. Unlike the latter couple, they had no common interests to compensate, unless an unfortunate tendency to over indulge in wine and other stimulants could count as a mutual source of diversion. It is true that they did share in common a manner of relating to each other that involved raised voices behind slammed doors, angry silences and periods of cold civility; but this shared inclination brought them no closer together.
It could be further urged on their behalf , that in this conduct, they provided society with the diversion of much talk, and their staff with constant entertainment; - for Willoughby’s confidential valet knew all about his improper pursuits, while his wife’s lady’s maid could recount how Mrs Willoughby had cursed him for a fortune hunting libertine in full hearing of the servants, and of how savagely he had kicked shut her sitting room door before retorting that, ‘Devil take it, in his whole worthless life, he had only cared for Mrs Brandon, and he’d be damned if he pretended anything else to please a scolding…’
But the reader does not wish to hear any more of this. Seemingly their staff lacked any discretion, and soon enough, the content of the Willoughbys’ exchanges leaked out into polite society, which showed still less decorum in repeating them assiduously. Many a man had dined out for a month on his knowledge of episodes that ought to have been cloaked in decent silence, and Miss Steele was one of many maiden ladies agog for the latest outrage…
“Not another word, damn it!” he exclaimed, coming again to a stop and turning on her in a fury she had never seen in him before. “I cannot endure to hear this from you, of all people. As to my wife, it must come to a separation; we are so at each other’s throats. Then, Mrs. Brandon, you recommend to me a life devoted to duty?” He stood breathing quickly, while unseen by either of them, a hare bolted across their path. Willoughby’s normally fractious mount did not even notice. Throughout their talk, it had showed remarkable patience at being stopped and started at every other minute, and now stood gently waving its ears, almost as if it felt for its master’s desperation.
He rushed on, “No doubt that is how you plan to waste your youth and beauty. No, I cannot find comfort in a life devoted to good works. Mrs. Smith’s tenants must go to the hell in a handcart along with their master, when he comes to inherit. Lord, but I am well served for my former misdeeds and treachery.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

MY BOOK REVIEW:

Have you ever wondered what happens to your favorite characters AFTER the book ends?  Usually I make-up HEA’s for them if the author “forgot” to end the book that way LOL!!  Ms. Green seemed to wonder the same thing as she created a sequel based on everyone’s past favorite characters from the beloved Jane Austen’s “Sense and Sensibility.”

This book was charming, enchanting, intriguing, witty, and entertaining!

This book was a delightful step back in time and true homage to the original story.

This book effortlessly picks right up with the characters seven years down the road.  Marianne Brandon is now a widower at the young age of just twenty-four.  Even though her and Colonel Brandon had a marriage of convenience, she had grown to love him, and was deeply saddened and heartbroken by his departure.  Since the Colonel left their house to the next male heir, and they had no children, Marianne is forced to move out, and so she retreats back to her mother’s.  Marianne’s youngest sister, Margaret is temporarily still living at home, as she is engaged, and soon to be married.  Now back home, it isn’t long before Marianne’s path crosses with her former flame, Willoughby, and even shorter than that before he begins flirting with her and offering himself up to her.  But Willoughby is still married to Sophia, the wealthy woman he dumped Marianne for.  However, it’s obvious Marianne is still smitten with Willoughby and at a time of grief perhaps he is exactly what she needs to help get over her late husband?

It isn’t hard to see Marianne’s attraction for Willoughby.  First loves are tough to forget.  And when you see that person – or even come across an old gift or memento from them it’s difficult to remember why you’re not with them anymore.  Those hateful feelings or whatever caused the rift just melts away and it’s like butterflies again.  But this time Marianne is older and wiser, and just getting over a tragedy.  Perhaps Willoughby’s timing is off?  And spark or no spark, Marianne knows better this time?  Or now that Marianne is free to marry again will she end up with her soulmate Willoughby?  No spoilers here!!  But you definitely will want to read this book and find out!!

It is truly enjoyable reconnecting with old characters, the setting, culture, and of course that witty banter!

It was fascinating to see where the characters have ended up and how their life has evolved since the first book.  I always liked little Margaret and am happy to see she found someone great and is getting her own HEA!  I was sad to see Marianne a widow so young, but that was an important part of this story.  Willoughby was still the ever so dashing, seducing, and charismatic fool.  Willoughby continued to be a philandering, despicable, scoundrel that took no responsibilities or consequences for his nefarious actions until it was pretty much too late.  I enjoyed that the author included even the smaller, secondary characters, and positioned them in true stance with their historical reconstruction from the original book as well, even though little detail may have been initially provided from the first book it still felt authentic.

I really liked that this book revolved around second chances.  I, personally, strongly believe in them.  It was the way I was raised.  But I have to say, after all the things Willoughby did, it was difficult to see him given a second chance.  Especially since he was not apologetic or remorseful until the very, very end.  I felt he actually needed to repent more and atone for his atrocious behavior.  He seemed only contrite when it suited him and when he realized he was running out of time to make amends.  I realize sometimes you need to hit rock bottom before you awaken and comprehend that you need to change.  Perhaps that’s what Willoughby needed?  Perhaps I am holding out resentment for girl power and once a cheater always a cheater mentality?

Regardless, I applaud this author’s creative take on this storyline and find it rather intriguing!  I only hope that Willoughby really would turn over a leaf, make amends, and become a better man.  Not just in the hopes of getting a chance to be with Marianne – but because he wants to be a better person, a pillar of the community, and someone his friends can count on.

This book also brings a second chance to Marianne as she now has to start over with her new life.  Although her husband did not leave her their house, he did leave her enough money to be comfortable for the rest of her life.  It is very fortunate that she does not need to worry about finances, and she can concentrate on herself and wait to marry someone she truly loves instead of rushing into a marriage for support or financial gain.

This book was an entertaining, short read at just 127 pages!  I was able to quickly read it over the weekend out on the deck.

This book was truly respectful, considerate, and kind to the original and I think Ms. Austen would agree if not compliment the author as well for taking such good care of her characters!

Although this book is technically a sequel it can be read as a standalone.  However, there is a significant amount of references to the first book and the characters substantially overlap.  There is so much backstory that would be missed out on if you didn’t know the particulars of the original book.  I don’t think you would be confused or lost necessarily, just would not get the full ambience or foundation of the story.

All in all, I enjoyed reading this book and would absolutely recommend it!  I think all historical romance readers and Jane Austen fans will like this book too!  So, add it to your TBR List and get to reading - you won't be disappointed!
