Two young dinosaurs from opposite sides of the floodplain bump into each other by chance. He’s a small meat-eater, and she’s a big plant-eater. They’ve got no parents, no food, no friends. They’re supposed to be enemies, but they decide to stick together instead. It’s not easy. When she gets caught with him, she ends up banished from her herd. He faces a huge rival who could stomp him out with one back foot. They have to outsmart a gang of bullies with sharp teeth and long, curved claws. And they struggle to survive the natural disasters of drought, mudslides and a bubbling tar pit. Worst of all, when they lose contact with each other, they fear betrayal. What if their friendship has been broken?

EXCERPT ONE:

On the other side of the lake, the surrounding cliff quivered. A chunk of dark grey earth slid off the slope and gushed through the water. Barely ahead of the mud, another Troödon was running, kicking water into the air. He jumped onto the sand just before the sludge buried the shore behind him. The animal lurched forward then pulled up short. He was huge, bigger than the whole nest.

The little Troödon stretched both arms out. “Take me with you!”

The big Troödon leaned over, but instead of lifting him up, he placed a long clawed finger on his small head and pushed him roughly down, right on top of the closest egg.

“Hey!” the little dinosaur sputtered from the mess of smashed shell and sticky yolk. “That’s no way to help a friend.”

The big Troödon fixed his fierce yellow eyes on him, quickly sizing him up. “I got no time for friends,” he yelled as he sprinted off the island. His deep voice carried back over the water. “You’re on your own, runt.”

The little Troödon knew that he had to save himself. A mass of clay, stones and broken sticks was rising fast around him. He planted one foot in the base of his nest, then he hooked the strongest toe claw of his other foot into the rim. He pushed off and jumped out just before the mud surged over the edge and buried all the other eggs.

“Run!” he cried. “But where?”

MY BOOK REVIEW:

This book is a fun and enjoyable read, that is also equally informative and educational!!!  I really liked the important life lesson skills and moral dilemma themes that are featured throughout the story.  These tools play such a vital element to children's learning and growing development stages and this book definitely supports those goals.  I also really liked the linear, clean edged illustrations that truly brought the story and the characters to life!!  All in all, I really enjoyed reading this book and would absolutely recommend it!!  I think all middle grade readers, YA fans, and even those a bit on the not so young side lol will like this book too!!  And of course, calling all dinosaur lovers out there!!  Whether you are a newly interested fan, a longtime admirer, or total dinosaur enthusiast - this book is for you!!  So, add it to your TBR List and get to reading - you won't be disappointed!!

AUTHOR BIO:

Paula Louise Salvador has had great adventures as a documentary film maker and writer. The scariest was when she stood under the ribs of a Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton – in the dark! The most fun was filming dinosaur dig-sites from a helicopter. On the dangerous side, she had to dodge alligators in Mississippi – and keep all fingers and toes out of the water.

Paula has met fascinating people, particularly jazz legend Oscar Peterson and composer Philip Glass, who performed in her show on electronic music.

In “BUILD GREEN” for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s “THE NATURE OF THINGS”, Paula and Dr. David Suzuki visited rock star Randy Bachman’s super sustainable house. (He played his guitar for us.)

Finally, it was a tiny dinosaur that captured Paula’s heart. For her documentary “DINOSAUR BABIES The North American Story”, Paula held the fossilized egg of a little Troödon. He was curled up inside, just about to hatch. (His leg bones looked like a chicken’s.) That’s where Paula’s story of Trygg begins.

Paula has a Masters in French Literature from l’Université de Provence, France and a Bachelor of Arts (including Children’s Literature) from McGill University, Canada.

EXCERPT ONE:

He had to get out. There was no more room for him inside his egg. The top of the shell had a small crack, so he pushed his snout against it and made a large enough opening to finally poke his head free. He stopped to catch his breath, but his feathers were wet, and the air made him shiver. As soon as possible, he needed to get into the sun to warm up. He quickly smashed the bottom of the egg by scratching at it with his back claws, then he wiggled all the way out. What a relief it was to uncurl his legs and stretch out his tail.

Dark green eggs, just like his, filled the nest. So far, he was the only little dinosaur to hatch. But maybe there were others beyond the wall of his nest. He had to take a look. By reaching high with his hands, he was able to hook his fingers into the dried mud of the rim. His arms were so skinny he could see the shape of his bones under the skin, but he found the strength to pull himself up. His legs wobbled a bit, then they settled, and he stood for the very first time.

“Anybody there?” he called out.

No one answered. He was alone. And he was surrounded by water. His nest sat on an island in the middle of a shallow lake. At least it had been built on top of a mound of earth, so it seemed safe. All was quiet except for the rippling of the small waves.

Describe Your Book Cover and How it Came About

Our book cover drawing of “TRYGG THE DINOSAUR” was great fun for artist John Bindon. John is an immensely talented illustrator of dinosaurs and pre-historic creatures. He worked from drawings and photos of the real skeletons of Troödons, small two-legged meat-eating dinosaurs that lived 76 million years ago in North America. Trygg is a Troödon.

Earlier, I had produced a documentary, “DINOSAUR BABIES: THE NORTH AMERICAN STORY” The video is available for download from Amazon:

Fortunately, I was able to keep in touch with the scientists that we interviewed during the filming, and they gave us advice for how our dinosaurs might look. Trygg was sort of bird-like, and made us think of an ostrich, but instead of wings, he had arms and hands with long claws. We knew that his teeth were small and pointed with little ridges along the side. Of course, Trygg is above all a character - one that kids have to care about. So John put a twinkle in Trygg’s eye. He had Trygg close his mouth for the illustration, so we wouldn’t see what were definitely meat-eater teeth. Besides, Trygg’s best friend is Alta, a plant-eater who is way bigger than him. We also didn’t want to give Trygg a scary look. I suggested that John add a smile to Trygg’s face. It worked. And I still melt every time I look at his cover portrait.

EXCERPT THREE:

I followed the broken trail of bushes and trees to where the others in my crew had gone. I stopped up near the center of the group, who looked even more nervous than before.

“Did anyone see a flare?” I asked a little more shrill than I wanted. A darting of eyes told me that we had all forgot to keep an eye out for it during the dinosaur rampage. “Let’s keep an eye out for it. Solomon is counting on us.”

Had we missed the flare? Was Solomon being slowly suffocated in a swarm of hungry blue zombies? Why had there been a brontosaurus out here? Something wasn’t feeling right. Something about the way the dinosaur panicked just didn’t feel right. Clearing land gives you a sixth sense for an expired situation, and this felt downright sour. With each passing brainstorm, I grew more and more queasy. I almost missed the small bloom of light, a little off from where I had been looking. I realized I forgot to calibrate for the new location.

“Alright. Time to work gentlemen.” I told the group as I grasped the reigns.

James was born in Montana, raised with three brothers, and provided trouble for two parents. In his 20's he fell in love with the Pacific Northwest. He then moved out to Seattle after college and started a life. In 2014, he started to write full time.
