EXCERPT ONE:

It’s been one month, three days, and six hours since I last ‘got my gladiator on’ and battled in the Arena. Not that I’m obsessing or anything. Sure, I can sneak in and watch someone else fight, but that’s a snore.

I roll over on my dingy bed, scooch under the drab covers, and watch the gray drizzle outside my window. Mondays are the pits.

Mom’s voice echoes into my bedroom. “Time to get up! You don’t want to be late for school, do you, honey?”

I roll my eyes. Of course, I want to be late for school.

Raising my head, I open my mouth to say just that, and then decide against it. Instead, I bite my lower lip, yank the pillow over my head and groan. Loudly.

“Don’t make noises at me, young lady.” Mom rustles papers in the kitchen. “I’ve a letter right here. You’re on something called the Official Watch List for Unreasonable Tardiness.” Her footsteps echo down the hall and pause outside my room. “You’ll be suspended from high school at this rate. What do you think about that?”

I peep out from under my pillow. Mom looms in my doorway, her fist set on her hip. She’s a quasi-demon like me, so she resembles a lovely human with a curvy figure, amber skin, chocolate-brown eyes, and chestnut hair that falls in waves over her shoulders. All quasis have a tail; Mom and I both sport the long and pointed variety. The big differences between us are laugh lines, some grey hair and our opinion of what’s ‘dangerous’ for eighteen-year olds.

I fluff the pillow and slide it under my noggin. Being suspended means no school. Maybe even catching a few Arena matches on the sly. I wag my eyebrows. “And suspension would be bad because?”

“I’d make it that way.”

Ugh. She would, too.

Xavier

England, 2770 BCE

The first rays of dawn warm the forest. Wind shifts through the trees, creating a chorus of rustling noises. The scent of all things green and fresh fills the air. Inside my hut, mice skitter past the straw pile that serves as my bed. Months ago, those little creatures might have snapped me out of a deep sleep.

But I’m already awake. I haven’t rested in ages.

Because when I sleep, I see her.

The woman in red.

What a grim figure I make right now. My hut is a small round space with a conical roof that’s formed from dried grasses. There’s the makeshift bed I never actually use. The remaining space is filled with spell ingredients. Herbs hang in bunches from the ceiling. Other magical supplies—everything from fresh seeds to old dragon scales—lie in wooden bowls on the floor.

Then, there’s me.

If any humans could see me now, I’d be mistaken for a mortal ascetic instead of an angel. My dark skin is caked with salt. My hair is long, matted, and matched by an uneven beard. It’s true that my eyes can glow blue with angel power, but that light is easily hidden under my mop of hair. And my once-white wings are speckled with dirt.

I sit up on my bed and press my palms against my eyes. Focus, Xavier. The woman in red isn’t the problem here. It’s the one who sent her into my dreams.

Set, the God of Chaos.

Red is Set’s color. And my dreams always start with a crimson mist of chaos. When the haze fades, I see a woman in a red dress and hair to match. Throughout my existence, I’ve been a warrior angel who protects others. No battle buddies. No romance. Just the occasional spell to enhance my skills. After so much time, how can a dream woman set the very core of me on fire?

This must be the work of Set. And if the God of Chaos is after me, there will be more to his plan. After all, Set murdered his own brother, Osiris. All of humanity could be at stake. I simply must uncover Set’s plans. Fortunately, I’ve finally found someone who can tell me what Set is up to. Too bad the guy in question is dead.

In other words, it’s time to summon the ghost of Mortimer the Druid. Again.

Another Saturday night, another stakeout.

This time, I'm watching the apartment of James Fisher, a major Wall Street tycoon and even larger dumbass.

Suddenly, my phone blares the Imperial March from Star Wars. I stifle the urge to groan. That's the ring tone of my current boss, Otto. He's a middle aged guy with a beer gut, receding hairline, and iron-fisted grip on my lady balls. Long story.

I pop in my ear buds and click accept. "It's Lexa."

"What the fuck?" Otto's gravelly voice blares in my ears. "I can hardly hear you."

"I'm in Big Apple Coffee." The place looks like it fell out of the 1950's... and didn't land too nicely. In other words, Big Apple sports dingy walls, a grimy tile floor, and chipped Formica tables.

"Why can't you run a stakeout from some place that's quiet?" asks Otto. "You know, like a normal person?"

"I don't know," I counter. "Why can't you text instead of call? You know, like someone from this century?"

A few seconds later, my phone dings with an alert. No question. That's a text from Otto. I should know better than to look, but I've never been the type who knows better about anything.

I take a peep.

It's a drawing of me as a pin-up girl from the 1940's. Which isn't too far off. I'm on the shorter side with lots of curves. I don't dress in pin-up style--no push-up bras and bright colors for me, thank you very much. With my job, it's best to blend in. Today, that means a pencil skirt and white top. Unlike this image on my phone which shows me bare-ass naked.

Ugh. What an Otto thing to do.

"The pic is good from the shoulders on up," I say dryly. The artist captured my heart-shaped face, ice-blue eyes, and long black hair.

Otto snickers. "One of the club shlubs left this under my door."

Club shlubs. That's what we call the gents who visit Otto's Lucky Ladies Lounge And Exotic Dancing Club. It's a horrible name, but Otto is known for hiring great strippers, not having excellent writing and grammar. I live in the club's back room and participate in the odd bikini contest for extra cash. Fan art is a sad side effect.

I really shouldn't have looked.

I awaken to the unmistakable noise of a forest harpy knocking at my window. Again. That’s the third time this week.

And it’s the single best part of my day.

Yawning, I slide out of bed, cross the room, and open my curtains. Sure enough, a four-foot-tall creature hovers on the other side of the glass, her wings flapping in a steady rhythm. She has the head of a woman and the body of a hawk. Classic forest harpy.

I wave. “Are you here about a wolf pup?” Harpies act tough, but they have a soft spot for a certain baby animal. So do I, for that matter.

She caws. “Yes, I seek a healer.”

“That would be me.” My pulse speeds. I love holding and healing new pups. “Meet you by the front door.”

The harpy frowns, a movement that shifts all the dainty feathers covering her face. “You’re an elf healer?”

Here we go.

This happens all the time. Harpies are overprotective, especially when it concerns a baby version of their favorite animal.

And honestly, this chick should wonder about me.

EXCERPT TWO:

Day Seventy-One

Dear Diary,

Today I drop some diabolic retaliation harmless prankster fun on my new royal subjects, the summer elves.

Trust me, they totally have it coming.

Why the revenge? Yesterday I held my first formal court as Queen of the Summer Realm. It should’ve been a bunch of long chats with all my elfy nobles.

Only no one showed up.

We are not amused.

Time to get tricksy.

Today marks my second formal court… as well as my mega payback prank. While I write this, I sit upon a throne of red flowers. The shade goes perfectly with my pink hair, matching wings and violet eyes. And let’s not forget my ermine cloak; it adds a splash of white to the look. Clutch.

Yet appearances come second to my dazzling plan for the morning. Although my subjects been avoiding me for weeks, that will end once the court doors reopen in just a few minutes.

I’ve so got this.

Sighing, I soak in the beauty of this moment. A huge atrium towers around me. Sunlight pours in through the open ceiling. The walls and tiles are painted gold. A pile of tiny purple bags sit in the middle of the floor.

Hello, elf bait.

Those packets hold fairy dust, which is powerful magic that any fae wants. My prank lies in how these bags also contain… wait for it… a freezing spell. Grab one and you can’t leave the room until I say so.

My scheme is so brilliant, I can’t stand it.

There will also be plenty of witnesses for my glorious success. My parents, Poppa and Muti, wait nearby. So does my best friend and major crush, Prince Dare of the Winter Elves. Let’s not forget my buddy Bilge, the hobgoblin, and his piggy familiar, Oinky. Two summer elf guards—I call them Blond and Blonder—hang out by the back wall.

Speaking of the guards, they look expectantly in my direction. The moment has come to set aside my journal—it magically shrinks into a locket that hangs about my neck—and get ready for the fun to begin.

MY BOOK REVIEW:

This book was such a fun, exciting, entertaining, hilarious, and adventurous read!!

This book was unlike anything I’ve read before – but in a good way!!

This book is filled with sass, drama, adventure, many LOL’s, and lots of OMG's!!!

Can you imagine going on a trip to find your dad who may be in trouble and being escorted by a total hottie that you have a huge crush on, but have to play it cool and act like it’s no big deal??  Oh, and this journey requires lots of close moments and touching and uhhh yea awkward!!!  How is Calla going to make it through this trip with her heartbeat racing so fast and she can’t stop thinking about Dare??  This is going to be a longgggg trip!!!

This book is told in a diary format, which at first, I was a bit hesitant about, but this story quickly grabbed a hold of me and immersed me into the faerie world!!  I also enjoyed the strikeouts and silly drawings that made Calla's diary more realistic.  My diary was certainly filled with lots of doodles and squiggles lol.

There is so much to this creative story, with complex characters that are strange, unique, but still able to connect with or at least sympathize with.

I really liked the main character, Calla.  She is feisty, scrappy, vivacious, determined, caring, gritty, gutsy, and just down right kick ass!!!  Definitely Book BFF material!!!  I also liked Dare and found him alluring, seductive, charming, strong, and protective.

I haven’t had the chance to read many Faerie books, but after reading Calla, I am very interested in this genre – or at least Bauer’s telling of these cleverly innovative and imaginary entertaining little creatures!!!

There are some predictable scenes.  However, there are still a few unexpected twists and turns that you won’t see coming!

I also really liked that the author included an afterword note at the end of the book.  She provided further insight into the story and little tidbits of how she crafted this enchanting treasure!!  It was a bit randomly put together but felt like a mind-blowing glimpse into the author's gray matter.  I often wonder how author's come up with such clever story ideas and it was definitely a treat to have such an open interaction hearing directly from the author about her process and inspiration behind Calla.

This book is Book Two of The Pixieland Diaries Book Series.  This book can be read as a standalone, however, there are significant character and story line overlap from the previous book.  Even with the overlaps, this book wouldn’t be confusing to new series readers, but I personally would think it would make more sense and have a stronger impact on the understanding of this book series, if you started with book one first.  It looks like the author has written a total of three books in this book series so far with books one and two available for sale at any major bookstore.  Book Three, "Dare," is listed to be released on March 30, 2021 and as it's appropriately titled, focuses on the story of the character, Dare.  And there seems to be some strong indicatation that there will possibly be two more additional books making their way out sometime in the near future for a total of five books in this series.  I am looking forward to checking out what’s next in this book series as there is still so much more adventure to come!!

All in all, I really enjoyed reading this book and would absolutely recommend it!  I think all young adult paranormal romance readers will like this book too!  So, add it to your TBR List and get to reading - you won't be disappointed!
