EXCERPT ONE:

When I turned from the fire to respond, the woman hushed me. “You have much work to do, my dear, now rest.” She held me in her arms, swallowing me up in the most comforting sleep I could remember for a very long time, maybe ever.

Hours later, the warm glare of the sun’s first light sliced through the trees of the forest, waking me from a sound sleep. The air was cool and crisp, and I was laying next to the fire that had burned down to smoldering coals. Suddenly, realizing I wasn’t dreaming, I was in unfamiliar surroundings. I remembered the woman I had met the evening before, but she was not within eyeshot. Glancing around to get my bearings, it was shocking to be sitting in the middle of a small clearing of the woods. Several teepees made of tall tree branches wrapped in animal skins sat along the edge of the clearing. Standing and sliding out from under the animal skin blanket, I looked down to see myself dressed in unfamiliar clothes, and leather moccasins covering my feet. I had the strange sensation I was in a familiar place, but still not where I belonged.

Before I took one step, I scanned the area. Then something compelled me to approach one of the dwellings. As I drew closer, an Indian brave stepped out. Grabbing me by the arm, he pulled me into the teepee and shoved me to the ground. Walking to the edge of the space, he retrieved a large round basket and shot it at me with such force I thought it might fray. Shocked, I gazed up at him, he looked oddly familiar, but it was his eyes that gave him away. These new experiences were teaching me that the eyes were indeed the window to the soul. Those dark brown eyes were those of a man I knew all too well. Makya! Could this be Makya? Had I known him through other lifetimes? Although he spoke in a different tongue, it somehow translated perfectly for me.

He was angry and started barking. “You are a lazy dreamer. Why you insist on leaving our dwelling and choose to lay with the fire in place of me is a mystery. You need to do your gathering, and you are late in starting your day. I am off to hunt. You will obey me and begin behaving like a squaw worthy of me.”

I heard footsteps outside as someone was approaching. “Calian, are you coming? We are late; the morning is half over.”

Stunned, my eyes widened. Makya? Although the man called him Calian, the spirit was too familiar. It was the evil spirit I’d come to know as Makya! It didn’t look like him, but it was his temperament.

As I pushed up to my knees, Calian glared down at me, striking out in my direction. Although his hand never touched me, a force knocked me back to the ground. As I raised my hand to him, he grabbed my wrist, twisting it, and forced me back to the ground.

“You know better. Do not use your powers on me. I will strike you down every time. You are no match for me!”

Panic rose in me as I struggled to understand what was happening. If this brave was indeed Makya by a different name, how did we get here?

Pushing through the opening in the structure, he paused without turning to me. “Do not return this afternoon unless you have filled that basket with berries and some healing herbs. You must learn your place and mind your responsibilities. Do not make me the laughingstock of this tribe one more time!”

I listened to his footsteps as he jogged off, mounted his horse, and rode away before I got up from the ground.

EXCERPT ONE:

HOURS WENT BY, THOUGH I COULDN’T be clear how many. I awoke from a dream where I was reliving my attack. Panic swelled in every cell of my body. Disoriented and completely confused; where was I? What had happened to me? Soft lambskin wraps restrained my wrists, with an IV in the back of my hand. My body hurt all over and my left eye was swollen shut.

A gentle hand touched mine. I opened my eyes to a small girl, wearing a hospital gown, gazing at me through the bed rails. The warmth of her smile gave me a sense of calmness. That’s when I realized I was in the hospital.

A matronly nurse with a heavy Southern accent stole my attention from the little girl.

“It’s okay, child, you’re in the hospital. There has been an accident. Please try to stay calm. Let me take off these wrist restraints. I’m so sorry we had to put them on, but you were thrashing so much during the night we thought you might hurt yourself or pull out your IV.”

The feeling of desperation overwhelmed me. “Where am I? What’s happening?”

She caressed my face, bringing my gaze to her. “My name is Laura and you’re safe. You’re going to be okay. You had an accident, so to speak, and you’re in the hospital.

“The hospital? What kind of accident?”

“Look, honey, try to stay calm. You had a rough night. Doctor Kennedy will be in shortly to see you.”

My throat felt raw and I could hardly speak. “Where is the little girl?”

“What little girl?”

I pointed to the side of my bed where the child had been standing less than a minute before. “She was right there!”

“Honey, I didn’t see any child. The children’s ward is on another floor.”

GUEST POST:

Writing this book has taught me “The Rule of Three”

In my endeavor to publish my first book, I was fortunate to connect with a seasoned writer who was instrumental in my learning a valuable lesson about feedback. She called it "The Rule of Three."

As a new writer, being published for the first time, I wanted to put my best foot forward. As many do, I found family and friends to beta read my book. As luck would have it, I met an author online, who I admire greatly, to design the book covers for my trilogy.  During one of our conversations, she gave me some invaluable advice about considering feedback from readers. She called it The Rule of Three.

This advice came from her when I asked her how to handle feedback. The question was simple, "How do I know what is important to change in my story based on feedback I get from my readers." If I feel strongly about leaving something in the story, when do I consider suggestions?

Her answer was even simpler than the question. She told me that she uses "The Rule of Three," and she gave me a concrete but simple example. Suppose you have a character who drinks coffee all the time. For you, it is part of who he is. This person has a coffee in their hand throughout your whole story. One of your readers suggests that it bothers them, and it is just too much. Maybe they find it distracting or unnecessary. Her advice is that she would listen, take it under advisement and keep the feedback tucked away and think on it. Soon you get a second comment from someone with the same concern. That is, two people that have found your character drinking coffee all the time bothers them. Now you have to really consider the feedback because two people have pointed out that this is an issue. You still feel strongly that this helps design your character's personality. You don't want to take it out, and you wonder why people find this so annoying. After all, there are a lot of people in this world that drink coffee all day. Then it happens, you get a comment from a third reader. Now you really have to consider the feedback. The point is, no matter how strongly you feel about leaving the coffee in the story, it really is about the readers. If you have gotten the same feedback three times, it is probably a signal that you should at least downplay the coffee a little, if not take it out entirely.

Her love of learning and new adventures has afforded her opportunities to reinvent herself many times over.

While working in the medical field she became a licensed massage therapist, attending a number of classes to learn energy work. She then went on to become a Polarity Therapist and Reiki Therapist.

As an artist, she has explored many modalities that have taken her on many a journey.

Her acting has brought her into the world of theatre both on the stage and behind the scenes.

Painting introduced her to a group of artists that shared her passion of bringing a scene to canvas.

Her love of singing afforded her the opportunity to travel twice to Europe as a soloist with conductor Sonja Dahlgren Prior and a chorus out of Boston. Sonja, affectionately known as Sunny, inspired her to do something, she never dreamed possible.

But something CJ Carson has always wanted to do is write. As a young student in high school, she had a teacher who implored her to pursue a writing career, but life had other plans for her first.

Now she is finally introducing to the world her first published work, "Murderous Envy" from her trilogy, Veils of Parallel Times.
