Secret Admirer Pact by Bernadette Marie - Book Tour - Guest Post - Giveaway - Enter Daily!

Secret Admirer Pact
by Bernadette Marie

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BOOK BLURB:

When Will seeks to rekindle a flame with his ex-girlfriend, his best friend Monique reluctantly suggests a plan involving secret admirer notes to divert his ex’s attention. In a surprising turn, Monique finds herself infatuated with her new boss, prompting Will to reciprocate with anonymous tokens of affection. However, as the deceptive game unfolds, both Monique and Will come to realize that the heartfelt sentiments expressed in the secret admirer notes were their own true feelings. So, what happens if the plan works? What happens if it doesn’t?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT ONE:
“Happy New Year, sweetheart,” he says, his words slurred from champagne.
“Sure,” I say, letting my eyes close. “Can’t even imagine anything happy about it.”
“Cynical,” he teases, but I don’t have the energy to argue with him.
Lifting my head, I sit back in my chair, and scan a look over him. Will’s hair looks like he just rolled out of bed, but that wasn’t how he looked when he’d brought me home. Alcohol and stress has had him raking his fingers through it until now it stands on end.
Will is a handsome guy, though lacking in any fashion sense. He’s my ride or die friend, has been since middle school, and I adore him.
“Are you going home?” I ask, noticing his eyes blink slower, or maybe my eyes are blinking slowly.
“No. Since you begged me to drink away the old year with you, you’re going to have to let me sleep on your couch.”
I was hoping he’d say that. I don’t want him to leave. Tonight, I want the company.
“Do you think she’s home?” I ask.
Will leans his elbow onto the table, resting his head in his palm, and he watches me. I move to mimic him, placing my elbow on the table, and my head in my hand.
“She’s home,” he says. “I’m just afraid that maybe she’s not alone.”
I reach for his other hand, and lace our fingers together.
“You know your living situation makes no sense, right?” I say.
“I know that more than anyone,” he admits.
“I mean, who lives with their ex?”
What is Your Favorite Motivational Phrase and How Do You Apply it Your Writings? Life? Etc.?
“Never give up on a dream just because of the time it will take to accomplish it. The time will pass anyway.” — Earl Nightingale
Embrace this empowering mantra: "Time is going to pass anyway, so you might as well accomplish as many things as you can dream up." How often have you found yourself wanting to achieve something but hesitating due to the perceived time commitment? Many times, we let the inconvenience of a lengthy process deter us from pursuing our dreams.
Consider the scenario of undertaking a year-long course. The initial thought of dedicating such a substantial amount of time can be discouraging. Perhaps you've contemplated writing a book or starting a fitness routine, only to dismiss the idea because of the perceived time constraints in your daily schedule. Yet, upon reflection, you realize that the hours spent binge-watching a TV show could have been invested in working towards your goals.
Now, rewind to a moment in your life when you committed to something significant despite the time it demanded. Personally, for me, it was enrolling in cosmetology school. The course spanned nine months, a considerable commitment alongside managing my own salon. I recall wavering, rescheduling appointments, but ultimately persevering. The reward? Twenty-nine years ago, I earned my license, enhancing the services offered in my salon and securing a steady income for my family.
Reflect on those instances where you pushed through the time barrier to realize your ambitions. It's essential to recognize that time will pass regardless. Instead of letting it be a hindrance, let it be a motivation to live your best life and accomplish your dreams. As my favorite quote says, “Never give up on a dream just because of the time it will take to accomplish it. The time will pass anyway.” Act now, for time is a valuable resource meant to be utilized for realizing your aspirations.
Sometimes coming home opens the door to discovering something new.
After Coach Diaz’s funeral, Alex Burke realized there was nothing left for him in Boston, especially after he found out his girlfriend had moved on. Moving back to Colorado, and bonding with his college friends, is what Alex needed to get his life back in order.
Catherine Anderson grew up in the shadow of Coach Diaz’s daughter. The best friend that was always overlooked, Catherine had reservations about the men who had been Coach’s Fabulous Five, especially Alex Burke who always had eyes for Rachel, and didn’t even know Catherine existed.
Coming together to mutually help Rachel through hard times, Catherine and Alex realize they’d had eyes for one another back when. Perhaps now that Alex was home, it would be a good time to explore an adult relationship. But when news out of Boston rocks his world, it just might be more than Catherine can handle.
EXCERPT TWO:
Alex took the brush from her and set it on top of the open can of paint. “Do you dance?”
Now he wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her closer. Her eyes were wide as she studied him. She might have thought he was crazy, but she wasn’t pushing him away.
A few measures later, she finally lifted her arms and swayed with him.
“This is silly,” she chuckled shaking her head.
“Spontaneous,” he corrected as he pulled her a little closer. “It’s supposed to be romantic, right? Stopping what you’re doing and dancing?”
Her eyes went wide. “Are you trying to be romantic?”
“Am I not good at it?”
Catherine blinked and he could see her lip tremble. “I asked you first,” she said and her voice shook.
Alex slowed his sway. Maybe he was trying to be romantic. Maybe that was why he felt the need to show up at her house with flowers and wine.
He slowed even more, until they were simply standing in the bathroom—his hands on her hips, her arms around his neck.
“I guess I am,” he said looking down into her blue eyes.
Catherine swallowed hard and ran her tongue across her pink lips. “Then I guess you’re good at it.”
The ball was back in his court, he decided. He could let go of her and pick up the paint roller, or he could take the next step and see what happened.
Catherine’s fingers began to make circles at the nape of his neck, and now he trembled.
Lowering his mouth, until his was only a breath from hers, he stopped and locked eyes with her. Her baby blues were soft before they disappeared behind her eyelids, and he knew then she wanted the kiss he was contemplating as much as he did.
Something Lost
by Bernadette Marie
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Contemporary Romance

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Saying goodbye is sometimes the beginning.
Craig Turner was Coach Diaz’s star player, back in the day. He was held in high regard, until he broke the rules and dated the coach’s daughter. Young and stupid, his affection for her lasted until graduation, and then it was time to face the real world--but his love for her would never leave him.
Rachel Diaz became who her father wanted her to be, a well educated, well traveled, successful woman, but she holds a well full of secrets from the outside world. As a high school therapist, she uses her past traumas to help others overcome their own.
When the Fabulous Five arrive at Coach Diaz’s funeral, to pay their respects, a rekindling happens between them all—and between Craig and Rachel.
Is Rachel woman enough to face her demons and is Craig man enough to accept them? Or will their encounter be as brief as the affair they had a decade ago, behind her father’s back?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT ONE:

"Dr. Olivia Chasen,” Santa’s jolly baritone popped her mental fuzzy bubble.

She stopped as she struggled to whirl around. “Me?” She touched her chest with a dramatic flourish she didn’t know she possessed.

A powerful spotlight illuminated her; its heat burned her already flushed face.

She pressed a clammy palm to her chest. “How do you know my name?” The haze in her mind was paralyzing all cognitive function.

“My dear girl,” Santa chuckled, “you should know by now that Santa knows everything and everyone,” he tapped an index finger to his temple.

Santa Claus turned to address the waiting line. “Girls, Boys, Moms, Dads, everyone, if you don't mind waiting for a brief moment, I'd like for Olivia,” he pointed a white gloved finger at her, “to please come up here on stage, and tell me what she wants for Christmas.”

She stood dumbfounded as the audience and the people in line clapped and chanted her name, “Olivia! Olivia! Olivia!”

Oh no! What was she going to do? She couldn’t possibly go up onto that stage. She was far too shy to address a theater full of people.

But if she didn’t go that would be so unexciting and so like the old Olivia.

But she wasn't unexciting! She was the new Olivia, and she was exciting! And she wanted to have fun! Correction: She was determined to have fun. Besides, she’d never see these people—her fellow passengers—ever again.

GUEST POST:

Writing This Book Has Taught Me…

Something Lost, the first book in my Funerals and Weddings series, was planned so that I could dive into a topic I’m passionate about, and that’s mental health. The main character has had many traumas in her life, and counseling has helped her to cope and continue to cope as more is thrown her way. Understanding the benefits of mental health care also gave the character purpose in her life when she chose to be a school counselor.

In writing this character, and her openness with counseling, I was forced to dive into my own thoughts and identify how I deal with things as they are thrown at me. My experiences don’t compare to those of Rachel Diaz’s, the character in the book, but it was eye opening. Mental health is only now beginning to become somewhat normalized after the pandemic of 2020, but it has a long way to go until it’s not a whispered about disease.

For me, mental health starts with sitting down and being real with myself. Sometimes, I can do this with journaling. I have learned that even when I journal, it’s helpful to me to write things in a grateful manner, or as a prayer, and then I’m not burdened with the heaviness as much. When writing Rachel, there were times I would walk away and feel as if I were carrying her trauma with me. I had to be very mindful to use the mental health tools at my disposal to free my mind so that I didn’t carry her feelings into my own life. This is something that happens with authors, and I’m sure our families appreciate when we take care of it before transferring it to them.

Kennedy Devereaux

by Bernadette Marie

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Contemporary Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Kennedy Devereaux, owner of Kennedy Devereaux Designs, is a sight to behold in her signature pink colors, accented with custom designed jewelry. Intriguing enough that Joel Kingsley, the man building the new business next door, can’t help but keep coming around, just to get to know the woman in the designer clothes. He finds she’s not such a mystery, and his charm easily wins her over--until she finds that he’s forgotten to let her in on the secrets of his past.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT ONE:
Pink doors, crystal light fixtures, white shelves. Joel cupped his hands around his eyes to get a better look at the feminine interior of the store he stood in front of. Kennedy Devereaux Designs, the lettering on the door said. Costume jewelry, purses, and a few pieces of clothing were elegantly displayed on uncluttered shelves. He could see a small sitting area toward the back of the store with white chairs on a plush pink rug.
When he stepped back from the door, he inhaled. Could he even smell the store and all of its femininity?
“Can I help you?” A soft voice had him turning to see a woman, as feminine as the store, standing behind him.
She was the smell—sweet and floral. Soft golden hair framed a delicate face, and her lipstick matched the soft pastel pink of the doors he’d been looking through. Sharp blue eyes watched him as he stared at her.
Joel Kingsley was no idiot around women, but this one seemed to render him speechless.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GUEST POST:

My favorite Scene

Kennedy Devereaux is a classy business-woman with pink style. And when I say she has pink style, I mean it is her signature color. The book opens with a man looking into her boutique, through the pink French doors that lead into her store.

Kennedy’s boutique is a take on an appointment only dress shop my mother used to go to when I was growing up. It was fashioned in a 100-year-old Victorian house, that one day became the location of one of my salons. (Oh, I have many lives.)

This store, the one in the book, is soft and feminine—and pink. The doors are pink. There are pink accessories. Kennedy even has a signature nail polish color—Kennedy Pink.

When Joel looks through the windows and into the store, it takes me back to the pampering we got from the boutique of my youth. Beautiful clothes line the wall, custom made jewelry, and designer accessories and purses. While looking for inspirational photos, I will admit I wanted to open a boutique to just be surrounded by the femininity of it. (I have five hockey playing sons. I deserve soft and pink.)

The scene is not only my favorite because it draws from my memories, but because it introduces us to Kennedy Devereaux. She’s in heels and finely tailored clothes, with her Kennedy Pink nail polish, but she’s strong and full of that sass that would have any man falling in line.

I suppose it’s appropriate for the opening of the book to be my favorite. Kennedy Devereaux is the first book in the Devereaux Family series, and it’s always wonderful to get to know a new family that we’re going to fall in love with.

Walker Revenge – Book 5
by Bernadette Marie

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Contemporary Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Russell Walker’s life was spared when his truck veered off the road and flipped. When he wakes after surgery, he can only assume the medicines are making him see things, because the woman he loved—who broke his heart—is taking his vitals.

Chelsea Quinn has spent the past four years keeping clear of Russell Walker after she married another man and had a baby. Now she is thrust back into his life as his caretaker, and living with his family when her ex-husband is let out of prison.

Some heartbreaks are too severe to recover from, and Russell is fighting every feeling he has as not to get his heart broken again. But sometimes the pull of love is just too strong, especially when the lives of those you love are threatened, and someone is looking for revenge.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT TWO:
Russell reached for her and she quickly glanced out the window used for observation. “What can I do for you, Mr. Walker?”
“Stay for a little bit. I’d like to talk.”
“I have rounds to make. I can’t spend any time in here talking. If you’d be more comfortable, I could ask to be transferred to another unit.”
His world was fuzzy again, but he wasn’t done. “No, I don’t want that at all. I owe you an apology. I want to give that to you.”
She turned to the computer at his bedside, scanned her ID tag, and then entered something with her back turned to the window.
“Russ, I hate to see you in here like this, but something tells me you deserved it.”
“That’s a horrible thing to say.”
She gave him a grunt. “You got in a fight at a bar before you flipped your truck because you’d been drinking.”
“I wasn’t drunk,” he defended.
“Maybe not, but your mouth was getting you in trouble, which says to me, nothing has changed.” She tucked one of those loose strands of blonde hair behind her ear, a sign that she was nervous. “If you’re sincere about talking, I’ll come back when my shift is over.”
“I’d like that,” he said, but his tongue felt as though it filled his mouth and didn’t sound right. “I’m sorry,” he said slurring his words.
“They gave you something to manage your pain. You will probably sleep a lot.”
His eye lids grew heavy again, but he forced them back open. “I love you, Chelsea,” he managed before he couldn’t open them again.
GUEST POST:
ADDING PERSONAL TRAITS TO CHARACTERS – IT’S A FUN GAME
One of the first questions authors are always asked is, “Do you write anyone you know into your books.” For the longest time, I wouldn’t do it. No one had a name of anyone I knew, and certainly nothing traceable. Then it happened. One day, one of my characters threw his water bottle in the backseat of his rental car, and I laughed for a long time. This was the first trait of someone I’d put into a book, and it belonged to my husband.
In time, it became a game to write in familiar to me things. Of course, those close to me would start to find those little Easter Eggs. My mother laughs when my father’s favorite pizza toppings show up in restaurants that depict places we used to eat. A karate instructor used to beg to be in a book, his habit of looking elsewhere while he was talking to you ended up being the trait of an ex-husband. Grandma’s recipes, cars, houses, clothes, and music show up in all my books now. But the funny part is, much like going through someone’s mail or trash, if you pay close attention to author’s books, you can pick out their personal things too. It becomes a game on both sides.
Hmmmm, can you figure out my two favorite singers by reading my books? I dare you.
