“This is Maddie.” Freya said her name, and her daughter grinned like it was the funniest thing she’d ever heard.

“I’ve got a highchair in the pantry. Let me grab it, and we can set it by the table. And don’t think of leaving until we’ve finished discussing this matter. You try to leave before we’ve finished our negotiations, and I will call the authorities.”

She sucked in a breath at the threat. Rich people really were different. Only a guy who had never interacted with cops would call them the authorities. But she had no plans to leave just yet. Because she wanted to see if he was serious about his offer.

Did he really want to marry her for a year to gain his inheritance? Would he really buy her a house and give her twenty million dollars if she agreed?

On her trek to the bar, she smiled demurely at Cooper, the hotshot, daredevil firefighter. He was sitting at one of the booths with Dr. Levi Mitchell, Gage Walker, and his business partner, Henry Sinclair. By the time she reached the bar, she was certain tonight would be exactly what she needed as a reprieve from the impending financial doom of her business.

Not even a short sale on the building would help get her out of this mess.

Every hair on her form stood at attention as the bartender’s frosty ice blue gaze landed on her. She didn’t know what it was about Xavier Campbell, but the sexy hulking brute always rubbed her the wrong way. Most of the Doms here, she could charm with a sweet smile and by exposing some skin.

This one, not so much.

He prowled her way, dressed for the event tonight in Scottish tartan, shit-kicker boots, and a bad attitude. For such a large man, he moved with lionlike grace. Emma was tall for a woman, clocking in at five nine. Yet Xavier towered over her, even in her four-inch stilettos. And he wore his control around him like barbed wire, liable to rip a body to shreds if they got too close.

“What’ll you have?” His voice, thick with Scots burr, seemed to caress her skin as he raked his scowling gaze over her body.

For tonight’s pagan-themed event, she had dressed as a Pagan Warrior Queen, which, at the costume store, had turned out to be a miniscule black dress that shimmered with glossy fabric made to look like leather, and a faux chainmail panel down the front. She even had a fake plastic sword attached to the belt around her waist. “Macallan. Make it a double. Neat.”

A thick inky brow rose at her drink order. “You sure you can handle that, lass?”

The way his voice rolled over the word lass turned her insides to melted butter. If he could do that with a simple word, he would be lethal if he touched her. Thank god she would never let that happen. Even if the man was the most sinfully handsome man she had ever had the good fortune to meet, he had danger written all over him. She even thought his long, dark chestnut hair with braids descending from each temple was sexy as hell. Most often, he wore it pulled into a ponytail at his nape. Seeing the wealth of his thick hair had her fingers itching to find out if it was as soft as it looked.

And his naked chest on display made her want to fan her face to diffuse the flames. The guy was ripped. Every muscle was defined, exuding just how powerful the guy was, with a light dusting of dark hair over his bulging pectorals, which arrowed down into a single happy trail over his muscly abs.

But his insinuation that she couldn’t handle her liquor pissed her off. “Why, because I’ve got tits?”

His expression turned to stone. “It’s a valid question. If I were you, I would drop the attitude, lass. Not a single Dom here wants to take a viper to their bed.”

“It’s a good thing then, that I’m not in your bed. Nor will I ever be.”

“I’d rather take a poisonous snake to bed than to have to deal with your sharp tongue. Just be careful, lass, because you’re walking a fine line with your disrespectful tone. If you cross it, I won’t hesitate to punish you. And I can guarantee that you won’t like it.”

She rolled her eyes at his brutish attitude. “And you’ve not earned my submission… Sir.”

She was in no mood to trade barbs with the beast.

Ryker had dressed the part tonight, too, which was shocking and rather hot. She hadn’t realized that leather pants with a blue-green scale pattern existed. Combined with the gold belt, cross body gold armor over his bare chest covered in inky chest hair, a pair of fish fin forearm bands over his muscular arms, and a King of the Sea tall, gold pitchfork, the sinfully handsome Dom caused her nether region to purr in delight. The man was sex on a stick personified.

Dakota ignored her body’s response to the gorgeous alpha. He was the last Dom she would ever tangle with at the club.

In the Pit, a line of submissives formed. Dakota held the bin, laughing with each woman as she flushed or squealed with delight over her selection. Dakota was participating too. She had signed up before the events of the previous weekend. But given she was running the show tonight, she would select the last marker, whoever the Dom might be.

The line dwindled as the submissives headed to the scene area where the Dom would meet them after the selection process was complete.

Dakota noted the Doms who had been chosen as the markers disappeared. She had been hoping for the blond firefighter Cooper, or perhaps even Xavier or Colin. But she felt her good mood deflate as the activity wore on and the Doms she considered would be great to ease her dry spell were taken.

There were two markers left when Nora stepped up to make her choice: Rafael and Ryker.

Rafael was a strict Dom who liked doling out punishment. While he wasn’t Dakota’s first or even second choice, he would be preferable to the other one.

Nora, in her pretty pastel mermaid outfit, fished her hand around the empty bin with her eyes closed. The submissive’s breath caught as her hand closed around one marker and she drew it out. Before Nora opened her gaze, Dakota spied the name on the marker in her hand. Rafael.

Double damn.

That left her with Ryker.

She plunged her hand in and grabbed the marker, then glanced up from the pit to the surrounding crowd. Her gaze latched on to the Dom in question.

Dakota’s breath caught at the undercurrent that zapped between them. He cast her a sardonic grin. It was as if he knew she didn’t want to scene with him, and his gaze dared her to withdraw from participating.

By the time he ventured down into the Eros Pit, his exclusive, members only BDSM club hidden a floor beneath Eternal Eros, he was in no mood to play. It had been a spectacularly long day at the office. Shame, really, that his mind and body weren’t on board, given the submissive bounty in his club.

But tonight, he would participate in the event, under threats and orders by Sophia. He sighed over the fact that he could deny the woman little. And she had badgered him from the start about joining in the events each month, until he finally yielded.

Granted, that might have had something to do with the way she had stood in his office earlier today, her hands on her lush hips, a fierce scowl on her face and a glimmer in her eyes that told him that she would forcibly escort him if needed.

He’d folded like a house of cards while ignoring what the sight of her in his office did to him and his libido. Gabe refused to let his dick do his thinking for him, no matter how much Sophia stirred him.

In the elevator, he adjusted the black mask covering his face. He’d not changed into a costume, as much as his event coordinator had pestered him to wear one. The woman had gone so far as to have a costume made for him. But he couldn’t see himself prancing around in the dandy seventeenth century garb, not even to make her happy. Instead, he had stuck with his black suit and navy-blue tie. His one concession, besides his willingness to participate tonight, was the mask covering the top half of his face.

And the mask was all Sophia would get out of him.

The mood in the Eros Pit most nights tended to be more subdued—with the extra added elements of scenes in progress and muted music—than the club upstairs. That was by design on his part. At least, it usually was more laid back, with scenes at various stations and the occasional high-pitched moans from submissives. But tonight, with the masquerade event, the air in the Eros Pit held a thrill of excitement. Submissives in their exotic costumes were grouped together, talking excitedly, wondering who they would end up with for the night.

All participating Doms had been given a station in one of the scene areas or private rooms a floor down. Then the submissives, in their erotic ball wear, selected from a bowl a marker with the scene area and Dom listed. The submissive would head to the scene area or private room upon selection, and then the Dom would join them once all the selections were made.

It was a rather brilliant strategy and way of introducing unattached Doms and submissives to one another. In participating, they were agreeing to scene with another for the night—and possibly more, depending on the connection.

And the place was packed to the gills tonight.

Scanning the crowd, Gabe discovered that even his rapscallion brothers were in attendance—and had gotten into the spirit of the event, given their costumes, or most of them had, anyhow. Dean was a no show, but that had been the norm the last few months.

The submissive selection process was already in progress, with peals of laughter and squeals of delight from the women. It was arranged so that by midnight, all the submissives would be at their stations. With time to kill before he went to his private room, Gabe made his way through the throng to his private section of the club. Most nights there were available subs standing near the black velvet rope separating his section of the club, or sitting at one of the booths or tables nearby with the hope that either he or one of his brothers would give them a nod and join them. Yet, this evening, all those subs were dressed in costume and waiting in line to select their Dom.

EXCERPT TWO:

What the hell? Who was she, and what was she doing here?

Colt didn’t waste time, not with the hail and advancing threat of the storm. The woman even glanced his way, her eyes luminescent in the rain, as they trotted up to the side barn.

Colt dismounted, shoved the barn gate open, and led Tank inside. Outside, the storm raged, and thunder rattled the small barn. Colt spent the next few minutes getting Tank bedded down for the storm’s duration. He removed his saddlebags, the saddle, and sodden blanket. Each barn was equipped well, with extra horse supplies should they be needed. He had never been so glad for the foresight. He brushed Tank off then grabbed one of the dry blankets from the storage chest. Colt made sure he had fresh water in the stall and added a few scoops of grain from the supply he’d brought with him. He hung the saddlebag with Tank’s grain up above the storage chest and away from the stall. Tank, god love him, would eat every bite in the feed bucket. And if they had to stay the night, Colt wanted to make sure there was some for later that night and in the morning before they headed back down.

With his second saddlebag with his lunch, keys, and satellite phone tossed over his shoulder, and his rifle in the other, he strode out of the barn, making sure to lock the door behind him. It would keep Tank safe from any predators in the area looking for a meal.

The woman was still there, carting in some monstrosity of a telescope that was damn near as big as she was. Rain and hail battered Colt. He was thankful the brim of his hat kept the rain out of his eyes. He glared at his squatter.

“Who the hell are you? This is private property,” he yelled loudly with the thunder booming.

She bared her teeth. Her eyes dominated her face. They were a rich mahogany that glowered with venom, and she snapped, “If you’re just going to yell at me, go away. I need to get this stuff inside before it becomes waterlogged and useless.” She struggled with the equipment. Her hands slipped. The weight of it was almost too much for her slight frame.

She might be a squatter, but Colt wouldn’t kick her out in a storm like this. Squatter or not, he wouldn’t have her death on his hands, even if her attitude made him want to wring her elegant neck.

“Leave it. This storm is only getting worse,” Colt barked, his fury rising in undiluted potency. He waved his hand in the direction of the ominous clouds as they turned day into night. The woman was risking her neck for a bunch of stuff that would be worthless if she lost her life in the process.

“All this equipment costs more than your damn horse. If you’re not going to help, at least move out of my damn way so I can get it inside,” she snarled, fighting against the rain and wind as she struggled.

The urge to throttle her swept through Colt. He glanced skyward and back at the damn fool woman.

“Shit.” He moved past her up the stairs, and set his saddlebag and rifle just inside the door. Then he jogged down the stairs to where she stood, struggling with the telescope. He gripped the opposite side, and lifted the slick device up. Shocked by its weight, he wordlessly helped her carry it up the porch stairs and inside, where she already had a few pieces standing throughout the studio cabin.

Working together quickly, they hauled every piece of apparatus inside, fighting the wind and rain. What was she, an astronomy club gone wild?
