GENRE: YA (Fantasy)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Don’t tell anyone, but Kelli spends all her free time listening to folk music. Ok, it’s not what you’d expect from a popular fifteen-year-old, but that’s why she doesn’t want the whole world to know.
When Kelli follows the mysterious Tam Lane, she finds herself in a place where folk songs come to life. As she comes to terms with the world, she makes friends, uses her privilege to help others, and even falls in love.
But Kelli has forgotten the fates which await so many characters in the songs, and she soon finds herself surrounded by heartbreak. Determined to protect the people she has left, can Kelli change a fate which has been sung for centuries?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT ONE:

“So, what is Carterhaugh?”

“It’s in the Scottish borders,” he replied. “You must have heard of it before, Kelli.”

Kelli thought about it. The name sounded familiar, but she knew nothing about Scotland to speak of, and certainly nothing beyond the visitor attractions in Edinburgh. “I’ve heard of it, but I don’t know where.”

“Well, it’s a kind of gateway,” Tam explained. “There are beautiful gardens, and the land is very fertile so it is said that any seed to touch the earth will grow into the greatest of its kind. It was the birthplace of the ancient kings.”

“What does that have to do with me?” Kelli asked. “Or with Jehovah’s Witnesses for that matter?”

“Nothing at all,” Tam replied. “But you must have asked about it for a reason.”

“Yes, I did,” Kelli said, thrusting the magazine back into Tam’s hands with her thumb marking the last page. It fell open as Tam took it from her, and a picture of smiling children covered most of the back page, with the title ‘Bible Questions Answered’ and a small amount of text.

“Yes?”

“It was there!” Kelli said, a shiver running down her spine. She flicked through the magazine, but the page was nowhere to be seen. “It was there. There was a picture of a wood and a river.”

“That is Carterhaugh,” Tam said. “The birthplace of kings. You should go there. You’d like it.”

“How would you know?”

MY BOOK REVIEW:

This book was an interesting, intriguing, and creative read!!

This book takes you on a mysterious, mystifying adventure that keeps you guessing between the real world and this exciting, new fantasy world in Carterhaugh.

I liked the main character Kelli, as she is strong and independent.  In the real realm her life is pretty simple and empty.  Her life revolves around music, specifically folk music that she listens to on LP or cassette.  She also loves to draw and is quite talented at it.  She spends her time when not at school, just getting lost in the music and the art.  Kelli just broke up with her boyfriend at the very beginning of this book for pressuring her to move forward in their relationship and become intimate.  Kelli is fifteen and feels uneasy about making that next step (as she should be at ONLY fifteen!!!) and so she ends things with him at McDonalds.  Kelli has an older brother, Max, who is considered the “golden boy,” and dearly loved by their parents.  Max is mostly focused on video games, his girlfriend, and college.  Kelli’s parents are rarely home or around to parent.  They are not very involved in Kelli’s life and don’t seem to mind leaving both kids at home for long periods of time.  It is even stated that Max was a planned birth, while Kelli’s parents saw her as an unwanted pregnancy.  Kelli states that she thinks because of that her mom never forgave her, although their relationship is more non-existent than difficult.  With Kelli having no family support or structure or real home base, it is no wonder Kelli would want to find a new fantasy world filled with people that need her help and want to be around her.  Kelli is looking for everything she doesn’t have at home and if Tam is going to offer her this special, unique opportunity filled with love and friendship how can Kelli resist?

This book has strong British wording throughout the book as the story starts out in Oxfordshire.   I was quite surprised since that detail was left out of the blurb.  It wasn’t disappointing, just shocking as I stumbled over a few of the words and had to look some up on Google.  Of course, there are the more “popular,” known words like young mum and pushing buggies and I was pretty sure when Max, Kelli’s older brother showed up in a dressing gown that had to mean robe lol.  But A-Levels and a car boot sale definitely had to be looked up lol.

I also want to point out that I found it odd that the book starts out with Kelli breaking up with Marcus at McDonald’s over milkshakes.  Which, unfortunately, was a really awkward scene.  The wording and the interaction between the characters felt unrealistic.  The topic of Kelli feeling pressured into having sex is definitely a realistic theme that I am sure happens every day no matter what country.  However, it just came off a bit stiff.  Furthermore, perhaps it’s different in the U.K., but I’ve never heard of customers paying for their food and drinks AFTER at a fast-food restaurant, especially McDonald’s.  You always order, pay, then receive your items, whether you are eating indoors or taking it to go.  So, that seemed odd to me that Marcus paid for their shakes after they talked and drank them.  Continuing on in the scene, I was shocked and appalled that Marcus didn’t drive Kelli home.  I get they broke up and all, but she was forced to stand in the rain, wait for the bus, and then spend almost an hour on it – just to go a measly six miles.  They left things amicable so I felt like he could have at least drove her home and then perhaps tried to win her back in the car instead of showing up not much later at her house.

The other tidbit I want to throw out, was the first scene with Tam, when Kelli just invites some random stranger/possible Jehovah's Witness into her house when her parents aren’t home, she’s not sure if her brother is still home, and she offers the guy a place to sit on the couch to dry off and starts making him tea.  It just felt unrealistic and so weird.  Especially when she just freaked out about Marcus even looking at couch let alone when he defiles it.  I get that there is wayyyyy more to this and I don’t want to spill any spoilers, but this scene felt unconvincing and uncomfortable.

I enjoyed the strong folk music references that were featured throughout the book.  Each chapter started with a few song lyrics that seemed fitting for that particular chapter.  I also looked up some of bands mentioned that Kelli listens to since I was curious, and I have Spotify so it has pretty much everything on it!  I listed to a few songs by Kelli’s favorite, Steeleye Span.  I am a huge music lover, so I totally get it, but I’m a millennial and a total EDM fan so the music wasn’t totally my speed.  However, I appreciated the music being so weaved into this book, it’s clear Kelli and the author are huge fans!!

I also enjoyed the richly detailed world-building that kept this fantasy world spinning.  The author wrote such descriptive details that provided reasonable boundaries as well as comprehensive ideas that flowed and felt plausible.

I definitely think there were some country and cultural differences and misunderstandings.  Not just in the language wording, but in the way of life and daily habits.  A US fifteen-year-old girl seems not quite the same as a fifteen-year-old UK girl – neither missing nor lacking – just different.

There are some predictable scenes.  However, there are still a few very unexpected twists and turns that you won’t see coming!

At this time, this book is not part of a book series, therefore, it can be read as a standalone.

All in all, there were just a few hang-ups for me, but overall, I still enjoyed reading this book and would still recommend it!  I think all young adult readers and fantasy fans will like this book too!  So, add it to your TBR List and get to reading - you won't be disappointed!

Lovers, Players, Seducer – The Revenge

Book II

by J. A. Jackson

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Last time, in J. A. Jackson’s steamy, romantic thriller Lovers, Players and The Seducer, the storm came…and went. Back then, Nicholas La Cour played a very dangerous game of cat and mouse; one in which he involved his childhood friends, Kienan Egan and Quinn Rolandis.  Even worse, he put his own sister, Lacey La Cour, right in the middle of that storm. Everyone got swept away in the torrent of greed, lust and ruthless ambition. All except two ratchet lovers… Discover as one ratchet lover determined to put the past behind her, believes she’s found true love only to be catapulted into an intriguing world that threatens her life and may shatter her heart. Another storm is coming, but will the two ratchet lovers survive it?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT TWO:
Quinn stood on the pier at Fisherman’s wharf hid among the throngs of people and watched as the young mother smoothed the windblown hair of her child as she watched the magic act being performed.
He knew why he’d come back to California. The woman talking lovingly to the child was the only person in the whole world that he trusted and the only woman that he’d ever loved. He and the woman had grown up together with no idea that they were brother and sister.
Quinn swallowed hard and let his gaze traveled to the man standing beside her. His old friend Kienan Egan. His eyes captured a tall, lean tamer lion with diehard toughness watching lovingly over his pride. At the sight of the smile Kienan gave the smiling child securely held in his arms, Quinn envied him. Kienan was a proud, happy, married man. A father with his whole world within his reach.
All at once the little girl let out a spontaneous peal of laughter amused at the antics of the magician performing in front of her.
As if on cue Lacey Egan’s head reared up astute as if her womanly instincts were on high alert. Her gaze scanned the crowd on the pier. All at once her gaze turned transfixed and powerful as she honed in on a man.
Hidden Gypsy Magic
by Tena Stetler
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Paranormal Romance

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
The Salem Wildlife Sanctuary is Gwen Taylor's life work. Her Irish Gypsy heritage provides a hidden talent she uses to help the creatures under her care. But even her magical skills can't help new rescues in dire need of veterinary care.
The opportunity of signing on as the vet for Gwen's sanctuary dropped into Brock Scutter's lap after he expanded his practice to include wildlife. The personal attraction he and Gwen experience is undeniable the more their professional and personal lives collide.
Touring the only "non-haunted" house in Salem they both feel a spark of magic. A trip to his family's cabin uncovers a heritage he didn't know existed. If they want a future together, it means facing the consequences of awakening hidden Gypsy magic and a race against the clock to correct past wrongs.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT TWO:

A mischievous twinkle in his eyes, he swept her off her feet and twirled her around. “Four glorious days, no clinic, no sanctuary, no emergencies—just you, me and the cabin in Puffin Cove, Maine.”

“Wow, you are excited.” She grinned. “Me too. But, I gotta ask. How’s the owl?”

He set her down on the ground and kissed her lips affectionately. “She’s doing great. Doubt she’ll ever fly again, but we’ll be transferring her to you when we get back. She needs rehab on that busted wing and to strengthen the other. Cuts and scrapes are healing well.”

“Great to hear. We look forward to having her. Everything is all set up for the birds arrival. I’ll see to her rehab myself. Though Pepper is going to consult. She did such a fantastic job with Kaylee years ago. In addition, she’s had a couple of endangered owls in her care recently.”

“Figured. Between the two of you, that’s one lucky owl.” He took her bag and wrapped an arm around her waist. “Ready?”

“You betcha.”

MY BOOK REVIEW:

Wow!!  Wow!!  Wow!!

From the very first page I was completely captivated and swept off my feet!!  I finished this book in just one sitting!!  Once I started reading there was no stopping!!

This is truly my favorite Tena Stetler book and absolutely one of the top books I’ve read all year long!!

I have to be honest, once I saw this book was about rescue animals, animal sanctuaries, and veterinarians, I was totally sold!!  But then the author also included a spooky, eerie, mystery of a “non-haunted,” house with ties, history, and secrets related to the Salem Witch Trials.  This added for a fun, adventure filled with historical content and with Halloween on the rise this felt like the perfect read!!

I really enjoyed the main characters, Gwen and Brock.  I loved how likable, genuine, and realistic these characters were.  I loved that Gwen was strong, passionate, caring, sweet, driven, honest, and warmhearted.  She also was a bit sassy, bold, and overall total kick-ass heroine.  She is the type of character you can easily relate and connect with – at least I absolutely identified with her.  Gwen’s love and compassion for helping to rescue and save the animals was sweet, angelic, inspiring, and uplifting.  She is definitely someone you’d want to be BFF’s with or better yet – even be her!!  And that says a lot about the author being able to create such a multi-dimensional character with realistic traits and a unique personality that draws a reader into not only sympathizing with the character, but further engaging and developing a stronger bond.

One scene that just perfectly depicts Gwen’s ambience and that doesn’t give away any spoilers is when Gwen finds the abandoned Desert Tortoises and is going on about, “what’s wrong with people,” which is like the exact same thing I was saying at that moment!!  How can there be people in the world that could commit such horrid, careless acts towards poor, defenseless, little creatures?!?!  And then she takes the box of baby turtles to the vet clinic and is interacting with Delta, the receptionist.  Delta mentions how odd it is to find these turtles in cold, New England, and asks, “how do you suppose they found their way here?”  And Gwen, gritting her teeth responds: “Human interference.” I could easily picture her saying that so annoyingly and frustratingly.  It just captured Gwen’s (and my!!!) passion about saving the rescue animals and her disdain of wretched people abusing, neglecting, and abandoning animals.

I also really enjoyed Brock and his strong, protective, caring, charismatic, and charming features.  His love for animals was also very endearing and adorable!!  Which made partnering up Gwen and Brock even more perfect as two strong, caring, driven, passionate characters with a clear devoted love for the animals in their care.

I also wanted to note that I greatly enjoyed the supporting characters such as Pepper, Lathen, Sam, Paul, Quintin, Delta, Rita, and so many others!!  They were quite entertaining, played well off the main cast, and were significantly important to the success of this book!!

Furthermore, I wanted to mention the paranormal aspect with many of the characters having special "Gypsy Magic," abilities and talents, some of those include being able to connect, interact, understand, help, and heal the injured animals.  I find this to be such an intriguing story line as an animal lover.  If you are someone who is attuned with animals’ emotions, you’d appreciate the ability to take that one step further to really know what the animal is feeling and needing.  Not to mention the power to heal a poor, defenseless animal like in the story, when Misfit, is significantly injured and Pepper is able to quickly heal her as there was no time to wait for a vet.

Also, I enjoyed the historical content of the Salem Witch Trials with a bit of a paranormal mystery intertwined that was well researched and felt properly integrated into the story.

I absolutely LOVED the entertaining names that Gwen gives the rescue animals and the other pet names that appear in this book.  Such as Fluffy the hairless Iguana, RoadTrip, “RT” for short, the injured turtle that was runover by a car, Misfit the stray dog, and so on!!  It was truly adorable, made for some entertaining laughs, and provided even cuter pictures in my head while I watched this story unfold like a movie.

I am a HUGE animal lover and I’ve been known to rescue many cats, dogs, squirrels, the occasional bird, and one time a baby fox.  But, I have never crossed paths with turtles.  Finding them to be one of the main rescue animal story lines was very interesting and intriguing!!  I honestly realized I would have no idea how to help a creature so out of the norm of showing up on my doorstep – not much unlike Gwen’s encounter.  I liked that this book encouraged me to further research a lesser known creature in the event I too, have a similar story in the near future.  Also, I loved that the author applied her own personal knowledge as an owner of a forty-year-old box turtle.

This book has such a fascinating, creative story line, excellent writing style with detailed scenes, strongly developed characters, is steady paced, and keeps you entertained through the last page.

There are some predictable scenes.  However, there are still a few very unexpected twists and turns that you won’t see coming!

This book is Book Three of A Witch’s Journey Book Series.  This book can be read as a standalone, however, there are significant character and story line overlap from the previous books.  Even with the overlaps and having not read the other books in this series, I did not get lost or find it confusing.  I think this book wouldn’t be puzzling to other new series readers, but I personally would think it would make more sense and have a stronger impact on the understanding of this book series, if you started with book one first.

All in all, I enjoyed reading this book and would absolutely recommend it!  I think all paranormal romance readers and animal lovers will like this book too!  So, add it to your TBR List and get to reading - you won't be disappointed!

BLURB:

Dave Knight is a wayward child growing up in a military family during the 1950s. His older sister wants to kill him but settles for regularly beating him up. Other siblings join in the mayhem while their alcoholic father contributes to the chaos with his unique approach to parenting.

As the Knight family moves from one army base to the next, Dave develops a give-a-damn attitude that often leads to trouble. In high school, he joins other delinquents in a series of escapades, some dangerous, others funny, and a few that would be worthy of jail time should they ever be caught.

After barely graduating, Dave is drafted into the army and sent to guard a nuclear weapons depot in Korea. There, he gets into trouble with his sergeant and tries to avoid dishonorable discharge.

EXCERPT ONE:

Two rocking chairs are arranged in front of the fireplace. On the mantle is a signed photograph of General Nathan Bedford Forrest. Mr. Lawson takes the picture down and shows it to Dave. “My pappy rode with Forrest,” the old man says. “He killed a lot of Yankees, you know, in the war.” Mr. Lawson looks at Dave expectantly but is disappointed by the uncomprehending expression on the child’s face. Carefully he places his prized possession back over the fireplace.

Dave and Melissa return to Gram’s house in time for lunch. After eating, the Knight children have another quiet time. Then Ethel comes up with an idea. “Let’s take a ride out to the river,” she suggests.

“What for?” Knight asks.

“I want to see if the rain the other day caused it to rise.”

“Who cares?”

“Come on, it’s something to do,” Bobbie says impatiently.

The family piles into the Plymouth and rides a short distance to where the Trinity River flows. Knight parks on the shoulder of the highway, and they all go onto the bridge to peer at the muddy water. It’s an evil-looking stream, full of snags and home to alligators, cottonmouths, gars, and snapping turtles. No one in their right mind would go swimming in the Trinity, so all the natives can do is look, check the water level, or maybe drop a line in to see what manner of creature takes the bait. “Can we go now?” Marie asks.

“Hush. Gram wants to look,” Bobbie says.

“At what?” Dan asks.

GUEST POST:

WHY MY NOVEL, AS GOOD AS CAN BE, HAS SUCH A MAGNETIC PULL ON READERS:

A lot of what I learned about engaging an audience came as a child.  Back then, I lived for Saturday matinees.  So did George Lucas.  His inspiration for Star Wars came from the serials made for children during the 1940s and 50s.  These films engaged audiences with vivid characters and plots that left you on the edge of your seat, begging for more at the end of each episode.

Eventually, I outgrew kiddie matinees and became an avid reader.  The authors I most enjoyed wrote novels with complex characters who weren’t always easy to love, like John le Carre’s George Smiley and William Styron’s Sophie.   Their plotlines were murky and interwoven with subplots.  Many times, subplots would come to a head at the end of an episode (chapter) in much the same way as the Saturday serials that I (and George Lucas) loved.

As a teenager, I would read into the wee hours sometimes with a flashlight under the covers so to not disturb my brother.  Often, I would promise myself to stop reading and turn out the light at the end of a chapter.  But then a plot twist would render me powerless to resist turning the page and going on.  At school the following day, I would sleep at my desk.

I didn’t have the arrogance to think I could emulate my favorite authors when I began writing As Good As Can Be.  But the story possessed many of the elements I so loved in books.  Characters, who were not all good or all bad, a plot with many branches, and a series of episodes that dramatically built on each other.

The first draft of As Good As Can Be came out in a gush without an outline or really any plan.  After polishing it, I gave draft manuscripts to several professors at the college where I work.  “Flows magically,” an English professor said after she finished it.  “I took it home along with a stack of papers to grade,” a history professor told me.  “Thought I’d read one chapter then get to work.  Next thing I knew it was 2 a.m., I was on Chapter Eight, and hadn’t graded a thing.”

The reactions of the beta readers convinced me to begin the hard work of finalizing the manuscript.  Six years of rewriting, editing, and proofreading later, it was published.  How did I make it so engaging?  The answer is that As Good As Can Be is about characters the reader cares about who are involved in a series of dramatic episodes that culminate in a realistic and satisfying way.  Just like a Saturday matinee!
