Flood
by Elaine Cantrell

GENRE: Contemporary Romantic Suspense

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Drawn together by their love of animals, Aria DeLuca and Caleb Hawkins burn for each other. They never suspected that malignant forces were successfully plotting Caleb’s ruin from the moment he entered her life.
When the flood of a century strikes Aria’s hometown, an alienated Caleb is all that stands between her and catastrophic loss.
EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT:
Have you seen Aria?” she demanded, tossing her wet umbrella onto the porch and brushing past him into the house without even asking permission to enter.
Caleb’s lips thinned as he slammed the door behind her. Guess he wasn’t worthy of common courtesy. “No, she isn’t here. Why do you ask?”
“Because no one can find her or Clairee. We closed the clinic early because the National Guard issued an evacuation order for anyone living on the river. Clairee and Aria were going to Aria’s house to pick up a few things, and then Aria was going to stay with her mother until things calm down.”
Caleb shrugged. “Sounds sensible to me.”
“Yeah, it does, but they never made it home, and they aren’t answering their cell phones. Mr. De Luca is beside himself.”
He now knew exactly what people meant when they said their blood ran cold. A chill had seized him and caused his heart to race as adrenaline pumped through his veins. He drew a deep, steadying breath. “Has Mr. De Luca been to Aria’s house to hunt for them?”
Tears filled Lila’s eyes. She visibly gulped. “He tried to, but the area around Aria’s house is flooded. There’s no way to get to it. Mr. De Luca called the National Guard, and they’ve promised to check into it as soon as they can, but…”
Her voice trailed off, but she didn’t have to finish. If Aria and her mother were trapped in the house, there was no place for them to go except up on the roof, and the way it was pouring outside it would be hard to cling to a slippery, steep roof. Even if they did manage to hang on, the water might still rise too high…  But what if they weren’t in the house? What if their car had been swept away by the floodwater? No!  This couldn’t happen. Forcing the dreadful picture from his mind, he sprang to his feet.  “I’m going out there anyway. If it’s humanly possible, I’ll get to her house. ”
