Resthaven

GENRE:
YA suspense
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
The last thing Kaylee wants to do is participate in a
childish scavenger hunt—especially inside the abandoned retirement home on the
edge of town. When she finds a bruised, deaf boy hiding inside one of the
rooms, she vows to lead him to safety . . . only to discover the front doors
are now padlocked, and her friends are nowhere to be found. Kaylee is about to
learn that not everything that goes ‘bump in the night’ is imaginary, and
sometimes there are worse things to fear than ghosts.
EXCERPT ONE:
Listen.
That’s
my father’s favorite word. I’m pretty sure that’s why he left my mother and me:
we never listened. What does he expect? My mother hides behind a computer sixty
hours a week, and I’m only fifteen. It’s not in our nature to listen. Case in
point: I think my mother just asked a question I didn’t catch—which is
bad—because she hates repeating herself almost as much as I do. My best defense
is to keep staring out the car window, pretending I didn’t hear.
“Well?”
she asked.
“Yeah,”
I said, “I get it. You hate me.”
“Kaylee,
I don’t hate you. And we both know you brought this on yourself.”
“Me?
How is this my fault? I haven’t done anything—”
“Exactly.
It’s been three weeks since we moved here, and in that time you’ve made zero
effort to make friends or leave the apartment. If it wasn’t for Anna, you
wouldn’t do anything but come home from school and sulk in your room.”
I
slunk down further in the passenger seat. “Yeah, and if it wasn’t for Anna I
wouldn’t even be here right now.”
“Well,
I think it was very generous of these girls to invite you over tonight, so at
least try and make an effort. It’s only for a few hours.”
I
scowled out my window, knowing it was pointless to argue. Once my mother made
up her mind it took an act of God, or an argument with my father, to change it.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by, Lisa. :)
DeleteThanks for hosting!
ReplyDeleteHave you started your next project? If so, can you share a little bit about your book?
ReplyDeleteMy third novel, Roam, is going through the editing process and will hopefully see publication by early next year. It's a character driven novel and very different than my first two books. I’m also knee-deep into a fourth book about a father searching for his missing daughter, who might—or might not—have been kidnapped.
DeleteThanks so much for hosting, Ally! I'll check in throughout the day and happily answer any questions that pop up. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat inspired you to write this novel? Do you have a muse?
ReplyDeleteI have two teenage daughters, and I wanted to write something I thought they’d enjoy. I'm also a big fan of horror movies, and it was a lot of fun to employ a creepy, abandoned building as a backdrop for the story.
DeleteI enjoyed the excerpt, sounds like a great book!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you enjoyed the excerpt, Eva. It was a lot of fun to write but definitely a challenge since I used no chapters. The idea was to have the story unfold in "real time" like a movie, which makes it a brisk, fast read.
DeleteWho are some of your favorite authors; what strikes you about their work?
ReplyDeleteStephen King has always been an inspiration, and my wife and I were lucky enough to see him a few months ago while he was touring. He was amazing to listen to! I'm also a big fan of Gillian Flynn as I'm drawn to "dark" characters as I think they're more interesting. Another favorite is Joshua Gaylord, who also writes under the pen name Alden Bell. I often use sites like Book Bub to discover new authors. If the sample looks interesting, I'll probably take a chance on them. :)
DeleteThis sounds like a really great book, I love the cover and enjoyed reading the excerpt. Thanks for sharing :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Victoria. I was thrilled when I saw the completed cover, and I've gotten numerous compliments on it. :)
DeleteSounds like a very good read, thanks for sharing and thanks for the giveaway.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for taking a look. :)
DeleteThanks for the giveaway; I like the excerpt.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Cali. :)
DeleteWhere did you meet Darth Vadar????
ReplyDeleteDigicats {at} Sbcglobal {dot} Net
When I was 8 years old, David Prowse (the man “inside” the Darth Vader suit) came to Iowa on a Star Wars promotional junket. They were also looking for 2 kids to don original Jawa costumes.
DeleteThrough astronomical luck, I was chosen not only to wear one of the original Jawa costumes from the original trilogy, but also to pose for photographs with the Dark Lord himself.
Definitely the pinnacle of my childhood.
You're awesome and I sure appreciate all the work you do daily to bring us these great giveaways. Thanks so much!
