Only in September
by Cynthia Flowers

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   Women's Fiction
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BOOK BLURB:

When Jacqueline follows her trusty Labrador Bailey down a hidden path to the beach, she's unaware that her vacation plans on a small island off the New England coast has already taken her life in a new direction. Running into an unassuming local beach comber stirs new thoughts, desires, and a self-determination she never knew she possessed. Jacqueline will need to trust her instincts and make the most of what fate has in store if she wants the future that, until now, she has only dared to dream of.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT ONE:
The ferry was taking its sweet time making its way to Block Island.
Time is the ultimate dictator. Where did I hear that? I couldn’t have just come up with that one on my own.
Jacqueline French grabbed one of the last outside seats on the Block Island Ferry. It had only left Point Judith, RI, ten minutes ago, but for her, it seemed like ten hours ago. This would be her fourth September visiting this tiny tear drop-shaped island nestled between the south coast of Rhode Island and Montauk Point, located at the eastern tip of the south fork of Long Island, New York.
Over the last several years, both Montauk Point and Block Island had become popular and expensive vacation destinations for well-to-do Manhattanites. They came seeking a reprieve from the overly manicured crowds who flocked every summer to the more fashionable vacation locale known collectively as the Hamptons.
She always preferred visiting Block Island this time of year, after many of the Labor Day vacation stragglers dispersed and the kids were back at school. Although there were still a fair number of visitors, the din of racing mopeds was confined mostly to the weekends. Thanks to Michael, who she met on her first trip to Block Island, she came to know virtually every back road and trail on this seven-mile-long by three-mile-wide island. Beyond its beauty, Jacqueline’s deeper connection with the island was its shape. She shed many tears lately over the fate of her marriage and the direction her life had taken.
In Search of Recognition: The Story of Search and Rescue in British Columbia provides background on why and how organized volunteer search and rescue became a reality in the province, and how search and rescue evolved over many years to meet the increasing demands of finding lost people and rescuing those injured outdoors. The primary focus of the thousands of volunteers is to save the lives of persons lost or injured outdoors; training and fundraising for equipment and other costs also require time and energy. Through personal involvement and references, the author provides insights into how funding and other support for the volunteer service was achieved, through government, responsible agencies, organizations and individuals working together to find ways to assist those who strive "so others may live.
EXCERPT TWO:
Civil defence continued to be the focus of all levels of government in BC during the 1960s. The cold war standoff between the Soviet Union and the United States and its allies continued to escalate as nuclear capabilities grew. Air raid siren tests were common along with drills in schools in BC. Citizens in Comox were treated to the sights and sounds of Voodoo fighter jets launching to intercept Russian long-distance bombers. The RCAF remained the lead for air and marine search and rescue, from their base on Sea Island. Searches for missing aircraft and vessels in distress were numerous, as technology such as tracking and alerting systems were yet to be developed or in their infancy.
AUTHOR BIO & LINK:
Jim McAllister has been involved in search and rescue for over 45 years, starting as a volunteer member in the Rocky Mountains in 1977 with Golden and District SAR and then Cranbrook SAR. He became the SAR specialist for the Province of B.C. in 2002. In 2008, Jim retired from the provincial government as a director with Emergency Management British Columbia and became a volunteer director for special projects with the British Columbia Search and Rescue Association. Jim has been involved with many major projects: the establishment of Avalanche Canada, the updating of volunteer reimbursement rates, the establishment of health and safety guidelines, the formation of a joint health and safety committee, Swiftwater Rescue standards, sustainable funding for search and rescue and the establishment of the British Columbia Search and Rescue Volunteer Memorial. Jim wrote a book on the last project, titled A Monument to Remember, and one on incidents, titled One Week in August: Stories from Search and Rescue in British Columbia.
Unwind to my truth of what love, guidance and faithfulness means to me.
EXCERPT THREE:
Dear Rayan
You're going to inspire so many people soon. You will be surprised when you find out how many people want to hear you talk. You’re an artist in so many ways. You’ll be remembered by the things you left behind. You’re going to do so many wonderful things, my love. First and foremost, don’t ever be afraid of crying. No matter where you are, if you need to cry a river, do so. If you don’t like crying alone, make sure you have a trusted friend by your side for comfort; and say, for example, you’re at dinner and something you saw or heard triggers you, go to a quiet area and let it rain. Don’t mix up fear with crying because then you’ll always be afraid. Crying can be therapeutic as well, especially if it’s tears held back from a young age. I have a lot of love for a lot of people and things. I had to grow up and, unfortunately, realize that not everything you love loves you back. I have love for the risk-takers and the hopeless romantic. Sacrifice and love is so beautiful.
Syndicate Moon: Stellar Heir Series Book Two by Scott Killian - Book Tour - Book Blast - Giveaway - Enter Daily!
Jael and his crew are on the run, searching for an ancient machine that could save the galaxy, but the syndicate-controlled moon has other plans.
After uncovering an artifact that grants him extraordinary powers, Jael thought he had gained the upper hand in the lawless fringes of space. But news of his newfound abilities has spread throughout the galaxy, and a bounty is placed on his head for crimes he didn’t commit. New enemies emerge to claim the reward and old foes remain relentless in their pursuit of the artifact.
Jael is unwillingly thrust into a high-stakes game that determines control over the moon. The four crime syndicates use this brutal contest to decide who will rule, and now Jael’s fate is entangled with theirs.
Complicating matters further, a mysterious woman with a similar artifact stalks Jael across the moon, sabotaging his quest. With each step, the stakes rise, and every decision could mean life or death. Jael must fight to stay alive, protect his crew, and uncover the second Antiqui lock—before time runs out.
EXCERPT TWO:
Sprinting to the edge of the barge, Jael quickly reloaded his pistol with his last three slugs. He aimed and fired at Lorvel. Lorvel swung to the side, barely avoiding Jael’s shot. Jael cursed under his breath and fired again, but Lorvel moved surprisingly fast, evading again. Not wanting to waste his final bullet, Jael holstered the pistol and dashed toward Lorvel. Lorvel had managed to get up onto the side of the barge, and he rolled to avoid Jael’s charge. Jael skidded to a stop, sending loose trash over the side and quickly pivoting and dropping into a fighting stance.
Lorvel fired his own weapon at Jael, but black crystalline armor erupted from Jael’s skin, deflecting the shots. The bullets pinged off the scales, creating sparks. Lorvel’s gun clicked, signaling that his clip was empty. He dove behind a mound of trash, disappearing from sight. Jael rushed to the spot, but when he reached the pile, Lorvel was already gone.
“So what is all that rocky juuk?” Lorvel called out, his voice now coming from the opposite direction of where he had been just moments earlier. “A nanite lattice? Some new tech you stole from Hezion Corp? That why you killed them all, butcher?”
“Sure. Whatever you want to think.” Jael moved around the barge, walking slowly at first and then running to where he thought Lorvel was hiding. “You wouldn’t believe the real story even if I told you.”
“Try me. I’ve been around the galaxy and seen a few things.”
Jael heard the click of Lorvel’s hammer on his gun pull back. Two shots pounded into the back of Jael’s head, and he spun around to see nothing but trash. “Why don’t you come out and fight me face to face?”
Lorvel laughed. “Because I’m not suicidal. You just bodied a half-dozen of Legion’s…” There was a momentary silence before Lorvel spoke again. “Well, I won’t say best, but they were pretty good fighters.”
Merzi zipped overhead, turning and idling. Jael and her made eye contact, and she nodded her head to his right. He slowly and as quietly as he could shift his weight and sprang over a pile of refuse.
“Saihreen warned us you were some kind of warrior monk. Said we should be—” Lorvel didn’t get to finish.
Jael came crashing down on Lorvel. Both the men strained as they wrestled for control. With a quick twist of his wrist, Lorvel managed to bring his gun around and shoved it into Jael's midsection. Slamming his forearm into Lorvel’s wrist, Jael redirected the shot. The gun discharged, and the bullet hammered into Jael’s side. It hurt, but Jael powered through and struck down Lorvel’s hand, trying to free the gun.
Lorvel snarled and used his free hand to jab at Jael’s ribs, attempting to find an opening. Jael grunted, absorbing the blow and tightening his grip around Lorvel’s arm. He twisted Lorvel’s wrist, forcing the gun into an upward angle.
The next few shots were fired into the air. He brought his knee up into Lorvel’s midsection. Lorvel gasped, the impact knocking the wind out of him, and Jael wrenched the gun from his grasp.
Slamming the butt of the pistol into Lorvel’s face, he flipped it and pulled the trigger.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT THREE:

I tensed up, unsure of what would happen next. Would they really go through with it? Beating someone up for a believable story was one thing, but they wouldn't kill an actor, would they? No, they wouldn't go that far; I was sure of it.

Before I could process the thought, two soldiers brought forth a rope, swinging it over the tall branch of an oak in the square. They couldn't possibly stage this, could they? Hanging someone without harm wasn't possible. Using the fake hand and stage blood was one thing, but hanging someone? That could go wrong very quickly! Surely, any moment now, a rider would burst through the crowd, interrupting the execution. But no such intervention came. The dreadful scene continued.

Helpless and sick, my stomach churned as the farmer was led to the tree, and the noose was placed around his neck. A priest stepped forward, reciting a brief Latin prayer, his voice audible amidst the oppressive silence. Was this really happening? They couldn't just sentence him one minute and hang him the next! There had to be some sort of protocol or waiting period, right?

As time ticked by and nothing happened, it became clear that this was not a show or a performance. This was a real execution, taking place right before our eyes in a matter of minutes.

GUEST POST:

Thank you so much for having me! Today, I’d love to talk about one of my favourite parts of writing—world-building.

For me, world-building isn’t just about geography or politics—it’s about creating a world that feels alive. A place that readers can disappear into. A world they can smell, taste, fear, and fall in love in. It’s the backbone of every story I write, and I’m a firm believer that the more grounded and textured the world is, the deeper the emotional stakes become.

When writing A Code of Knights and Deception, my biggest inspiration was real history—specifically medieval England. I’ve always been fascinated by that period, especially the 15th century. There’s something deeply romantic and brutal about the era: the clashing of swords, the stark roles of women, the cold stone castles, the politics veiled behind chivalry. I wanted to explore all of that—but from the perspective of a modern woman suddenly dropped into that world.

My research took me deep into nonfiction books about castle life, medieval warfare, women’s roles, and everyday customs.
I became particularly obsessed with Warwick Castle and the real family that lived there. That’s where I found Richard de Beauchamp, the Earl of Warwick, a historical figure in my book. He was young, powerful, and a notable warrior, yet little is known about his youth—only that he became Earl at 19. This lack of information allowed me to creatively shape his character, though I often wonder if I’ve portrayed him accurately. It’s both the beauty and challenge of blending fiction with real history.

Outside of textbooks, my imagination was also fuelled by films and shows like Outlander, and even Black Mirror. I know that last one sounds like an odd fit, but it’s part of what sparked the story behind A Code of Knights and Deception. I didn’t want the time travel element to be magical—I wanted something rooted in science.

Sword fighting was another real-life influence. Years ago, I took up fencing, then trained with longswords in a historical school. I still remember the weight of the blade in my hand—and that visceral feeling of power and precision. It made its way onto every page.

In the end, world-building is about emotion. You build a world not just to show off your knowledge—but to make your characters bleed, love, and grow within it. And that’s what I hope I’ve done.

The Measure of Life by Judith Works - Book Tour - Guest Post - Giveaway - Enter Daily!

The Measure of Life
by Judith Works

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Women's Fiction
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BOOK BLURB:

A story of love and loss, lies and truth, begins in Rome when Nicole shares a cappuccino and cornetto with her Italian tutor. The meeting sets off a chain of events that upends the course of her life. While Rome also brings deep friendships and immersion into a sumptuous food scene there is no escape from acknowledging the consequences of her actions. In search of forgiveness and healing, she moves to an island near her childhood home in Seattle only to find the way to reunite the remnants of her family and discover her true path is to return to Rome and face the past.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT ONE:
I read about a new concept called blogging. Intrigued, I studied the process to launch my own blog. After a lot of false starts, I managed to post about the day I bought bread in the bakery Maggie recommended and ended up meeting the old man. I titled it FIAT PANIS (Let There be Bread):
Once upon a time I met an old man out of a fairy tale. He was tiny and perched in a gigantic carved chair where he presided over a treasure trove of books and antiques. And it was the same day I first savored the goodness of real Roman bread. The kind of bread that’s crispy brown on the outside and chewy inside. The kind baked in a wood-fired oven wafting a mouth-watering aroma out the door to compel you to follow the scent back to the bakery where fresh loaves await. I squeezed through the crowd toward the clerk to make my selection while imagining ancient Romans clustered at the baker’s stall—the baker pulling the rounds of whole wheat spiced with poppy and fennel seeds from the hot oven while his wife handed them to house slaves who gossiped about their owners, and matrons who gossiped about the neighbors as they handed over a few coins.
I included colorful photos of the bakery and a loaf of fresh bread on my kitchen table along with frescoes of loaves from the ruins of Pompeii.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GUEST POST:

My Office

Because I’m a life-long traveler my office is filled with travel memories that inspire my writing. My first book, a memoir titled Coins in the Fountain, is set in Rome where I lived for ten years. Many of the odds and ends from that time grace the walls and shelves. My new novel, The Measure of Life, is set in Rome and on an island near Seattle. Again, I looked toward my treasures for inspiration on the Roman setting.

I have a large map of Rome in the 17th Century over my desk which holds my PC and dictionaries, The Chicago Manual of Style, and my thesarus. Surrounding the desk on one side is a watercolor of Assisi, an etching of a building near San Gimignano with the towers in the background, a painting from Sicily. On the other side I’ve hung three paintings of Umbria.

There’s also a recent addition of a small piece of a 14th Century Italian Book of Hours. I placed a bronze head from an old piece of furniture above it. I bought it at the famous (and infamous) Roman flea market called Porta Portese.

But the other walls hold other treasures – I puppet from Sri Lanka, a flute from New Guinea, along with an icon and painting from Ethiopia, a Japanese woodcut, a magical realist painting from Haiti, and a print of tribal symbols from Ghana.

Another wall holds small icons, and my bookcase if stuffed with volumes on Italy and my collection of antique travel books. My favorites are the 1913 Baedeker guide to the Holy Land (complete with sentimental pressed flowers from that time), and the 1904 guide to Central Italy including Rome. It’s full of marvelous information and maps for anyone wanting to set a story during that time.

I love my model boats from The Gambia with the little figures paddling or guarding their merchandise as the slide down the river to market. Another small collection on my shelves is Italian terra cotta heads taken from ancient Roman sculptures. The model of the young man served as inspiration for Alessandro, the love interest, in the Measure of Life, although my character is more handsome.

So, what some would see as clutter, is for me, a partial record of my life.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
AUTHOR BIO:
After I earned a law degree in midlife, I had the chance to leave the Forest Service in Oregon and run away to the Circus (Maximus). In reality my husband and I moved to Rome where I worked for the United Nations Food & Agriculture Organization for four years as a legal advisor to the director of human resources. I could see the Circus that had hosted chariot races during the Roman Empire from my office window.
My husband and I reluctantly returned to the US after four years. But we pined for the land of pasta, vino, art, and sunny piazzas. Then the gods smiled and offered a chance to return to Rome with the UN World Food Program. Six more years or food and frolic in the Eternal City passed much too quickly. The indelible experiences living in Italy and working for the UN were the genesis of my memoir Coins in the Fountain.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT ONE:

The thing about being a smudge of darkness against a black backdrop is that no one ever sees you. That is until there’s smoke. I’ve always been a creature of the night. Not like a vamp—although that would be kind of badass. I wouldn’t ever want to be like the sparkly ones, but I wouldn’t have an aversion to the cult classic: razor sharp fangs with no morals kind. Like They Thirst or Salem’s Lot, but maybe with a little more humanity left inside the creatures. I could totally rock alongside The Lost Boys.

I’ve always clung to the shadows. It’s safe there. You know, like the night sky, or the stars. The twinkle of just that small bit of light breaking through this world. It knows me, unlike this place. This place is crawling with filters that no one else seems to notice—colored lenses that sharpen the edges of what most people, if given the chance, wouldn’t want to see. My Grandma Reanin used to say the same things. I guess that’s why I make so many people uncomfortable. I look for the details most people find cringy. Imagine if they knew the truth about me.
