EXCERPT TWO:

Chapter -Twenty-Five-

“A broken heart is the worst. It’s like having a broken rib. No one can see it, but it hurts every time you breathe.”

Caitlyn

Charleston, SC

Two weeks passed with no word from Bruce. Last she had heard from her husband he had gone back to Vegas to help Dane search for Meirah.

Even when on tour, not a day passed when Bruce didn’t call her. She had phoned the police in Vegas weeks ago. They’d told her a Dane Bainbridge had reported his wife missing around the same time. Not new news. She loved Dane and Meirah like family, but she wished they had not included Bruce in their adventure, even though he told her it was his idea to go along.

Caitlyn had to assume they had found their way into whatever dimension they suspected Meirah had been taken into… the only reason Bruce would not call.

And so, she had been keeping busy caring for their son, fans of the band, and even the media who had heard the news of the band’s possible break-up. That alone made her want to shut off the phone, but she needed to keep the line open in case Bruce called.

So, when the phone rang late that evening, she sighed, assuming another reporter had gotten their private number. She answered anyway.

“Mrs. Beaufort?” said a male voice on the other end.

“Yes…”

“This is Captain Smith, of the Charleston Police Department. Can you open the gate please, we need to speak to you.”

Caitlyn’s heart jumped a beat. “Why? What is it?”

“We are just outside. Please, open the gate and we will come to you.”

Unsure if this was a reporter trying to find a way in, she moved to the window and slid open the shade. Down on the street, she could see a police car waiting outside the gate… and a cop holding a cell phone standing outside it.

She almost dropped her phone. “D-Did you…did you find my husband?” she didn’t want to hear the answer. If the police were there, it was bad news.

“We’re not sure. Please. Go to the door so we can talk.”

“O-Ok…” She hung up the phone and went downstairs. Her legs wanted to give out, but she just kept telling herself nothing was wrong. Bruce was with Dane in some other dimension in time… a place the police, or anyone else in the “real” world, would never believe or understand.

She pressed the gate button and moved to the front door. She opened it just as two officers exited the car and approached her. For some reason she didn’t understand, her legs went numb.

“Mrs. Beaufort?”

Why was he asking her name again? “Yes.” Was it her imagination or did her voice sound shaky?

“We need you to come with us.”

Was she under arrest? “Why?”

“A body was found that fits the description of your husband. You need to make a positive identification.”

“A b-body?” That meant dead. No, it certainly wasn’t Bruce. He was in some weird space in time, she reminded herself.

“Yes, ma’am. Please…”

“I-I um… I have a son… I need to…”

“Do what you need to find care for him, we’ll wait.”

From there, her motions were on auto pilot. Her mind continued to convince her it couldn’t be Bruce, yet her body had gone numb all over, as if her subconscious was trying to prepare her for the worst. She called the nanny, promising extra pay, and then dressed in a light pink blouse that was Bruce’s favorite, and a skirt. She slipped her feet into flat pumps and told Lisa, the nanny, who arrived within several minutes, that she would be right back.

She knew Lisa asked a bunch of questions but if she answered she couldn’t remember. Nothing from there on out was held to memory; not the drive to the hospital, nor the doctor or the long walk down to the morgue. All of it happened, but to someone else. A movie she fell asleep watching, or a book she’d read. But not to her.

Even as she was led into a cold room lined with steel drawers did it not feel real. Nor as the Coroner opened one of those drawers and she could see the covered body within. She didn’t even realize she had been fisting the material of her skirt so hard that she tore a seam.

When the sheet was pulled back, she was sure the man that lay there could not be Bruce. The beard was too long, he had been stripped of his clothing and the long dark hair was dirty and matted. Could be some homeless man, she told herself, but deep within she knew.

“Is this your husband?” asked the police officer.

She wanted to shake her head no, but found herself nodding. When she opened her mouth no words escaped.

A hand touched her arm, and she wasn’t sure why until she realized her knees were buckling. And she was crying. No, this was not Bruce, it couldn’t be! But it was. She saw the distinctive mole on his upper right breast. The one she always circled with her finger when they were lying in bed talking or after they made love. Though the hand still held onto her arm, she briefly saw the floor before everything went black.

Evolution of My Writing Habits and How I've Grown into a Better/More Experienced Writer

I could write entire books on my evolution as a writer, since I started writing when I was a little kid. At 9, I wrote stories with pictures (always about horses, my obsession as a kid.. ok, still my obsession) and I would tape the pages together, give the book a title and even a publishing house name. As a teenager, I was bullied a lot in school (I have autism-Asperger’s, and was always very socially inept). I began writing short stories to get away from reality. A short story I wrote in 1980 eventually morphed into my novel, Beyond Every Mirror (Book One in the Anachronistic Dimensions series). But, I didn’t do anything much with it. I self pubbed it in paperback before self publishing was a thing (and was surprised to find several of those copies for sale on Amazon, but not from me). I rewrote it a few years ago, bringing it up to date on the time, changing POV and making the writing better. I published it to Amazon in 2016. But, once I had it up, I realized the story was not over. Now, I am working on Book Four!

I come from a traditional publishing background (my first book was published by Howell Book House in 1998). So, I still go to writer’s conferences, talk to agents and editors and I am constantly learning and improving. Recently, I spoke to a literary agent who works for a big agency in NYC. She read the first chapter of my time travel romance (not yet published) and loved it. She asked for the whole manuscript, so I am extremely excited about that.

BLURB:

In Hyde Park, a movie theater erupts in flames on a bitterly cold November evening.

It seems like a job for the fire department, but under Captain Creighton’s direct orders, Detective Gavin Nolan and his partner, Derrick Williamson, must investigate. Arriving on the chaotic scene, they find multiple fatalities —but one of the victims is most peculiar…

Gavin soon discovers that this fire wasn’t the first of its kind. The arsonist has set ablaze other buildings around Chicago, and more female victims left in the same gruesome state have been discovered.

Gavin and Derrick determine that the arsonist is not an arsonist at all—but a sinister serial killer with an agenda.

Juggling the unexpected events in his personal life, Gavin digs into the locations of the explosions. At the same time, Derrick probes into the victims’ lives, searching for any possible connection.

However, when the next explosion occurs, the killer leaves behind a significant object, and Derrick becomes noticeably reserved. Gavin soon uncovers an enigmatic link, one that points to Derrick’s military past. A time that his partner had wished to forget. Yet, to catch the vicious maniac, Derrick must tell Gavin everything.

In a suspenseful, gripping ride to the end, it is up to Gavin to rescue his partner from the clutches of a killer. But will he make it in time?

EXCERPT ONE:

Alarmed, the woman’s eyes opened. Her nerves twitched slightly, as if an electric shock rattled her body.

Instantly, an eerie darkness consumed her, and an unusual stillness blanketed her surroundings.

Where am I? the woman wondered.

With her instinctual medical training, she began immediately diagnosing her own condition: blurry vision, raspy breath, citrus acidic taste at the back of her throat, and weak muscles. The signs were a tell-all. She had been drugged. Most likely either clonazepam or estazolam.

As her thick braids fell in front of her eyes, she realized that her body was hanging in midair. Above her, a rope bound her hands. The burning strain in her deltoids ached deep into her lower back.

The air was unusually frigid. Her entire body was trembling. She looked down and realized she was completely naked.

Who took off my clothes? she thought, her mind racing with a fresh wave of panic.

All she could remember was getting home from a run in the cold rain of a late November day that had chilled her to the core. Since the presentation of her dissertation was only days away, she relieved the building stress with those exhilarating runs. They were especially liberating knowing that she had to head back to the university lab. Entering the darkened house, she had sworn she’d left the light on. She recalled a quick shadow slipping just behind her in her peripheral vision. She’d felt a sudden blow to head, had fallen against the wooden banister—

What day is it? The presentation was on Saturday. Did she miss it? A sense of dread engulfed her, then fear. All the seemingly endless months and years of planning her project, all the meetings with that arrogant, dimwitted professor, all those countless hours in the lab…it would all be for nothing. Most importantly, all the sacrifices she’d made with her family, spending so much time away from her daughter—and well, her husband too— would be just a waste.

GUEST POST:

Who Inspired Your Love for Books?

Really who doesn’t enjoy reading a great book and be utterly swept away?

My appetite for reading can be rather ferocious, and I can digest between two to three books a week. To me, reading and writing certainly go hand in hand. Reading different genres of books cultivates and allows me to admire the power of a good story and imagination. Discovering new authors and tearing into their books is an absolutely exhilarating feeling. Naturally, they inspire me to create, think and produce more of my own work.

In my youth though, I had not been such an avid reader, and reading was quite a challenge. However, I kept at it and persisted until I was no longer academically behind. While I read the required English literature (The Scarlet Letter, The Old Man and The Sea, and so on), I had appreciated how the classic authors described the scene, while bringing out the story from the characters and dialogue in order to convey important powerful meanings.  When I began reading the likes of Peter Straub, Clive Barker and Anne Rice, I discovered the nuance of contemporary/modern writing in the graphic, yet cryptic details, strong sexual situations and of course explicit language. I couldn’t get enough! Soon, my life took a series of different paths: Unfortunately, reading sat on the back burner. For over two decades, I was an Executive Chef, created various dishes and ran kitchens with various staff levels. Eventually, the demand of the job wore down me. Perhaps, the long hours in the restaurant industry highly distracted me. As my career became less exciting, the love for reading circumvented back, and then I devoured books once again. About ten years ago, I decided to get my Master’s degree. Thus, the discipline of reading dense, critical-thinking materials redefined how I absorbed books.

What does all this have to do with writing?  You ask. In midst of my hectic life, I always wrote things: Short descriptions here and there, some stories or just thoughts. In my early phase of writing, I did complete writing a novel—all handwritten, yikes! Was it great writing? The Great Classic? Will it be published? Absolutely not! Knowing I could produce a complete work from beginning to end fueled my desire to write more. As a result, I wrote another piece: The Tale of Old Man Fischer. Being a chef and too much confidence, I just decided to publish it—without anybody really reading it. Call me a gambler! So many lessons I had learned (i.e. editors are BFFs, marketing, social reach, etc.). No one in my family even knew I was writing: They were completely flabbergasted! Despite this, I keep on writing. While in Graduate School, between the dry dense books, endless papers and grinding out my thesis, I wrote my next novel, GAVIN, as a mental break. After graduating, I wrote DERRICK. Over the last several years, I have written several other pieces which are coming down the pike. In fact, as we ‘speak’, I’m editing the final part, QUINN. I attempt to create books which allow the reader to slip into another reality. Because of my inner love for Shakespeare, my work is truly like an onion: As you slice it down the middle, you see the many layers of juicy flesh. My works are very much like that…so please pick up one of my books and enjoy the ride.

Always Read to Escape!

EXCERPT ONE:

“Um, there is a . . . gentleman . . . demandin’ to see the owner.” Susan twisted her hands together. Her starched white apron had come undone, its ties wrinkled as they drooped on either side of her ample hips. She audibly swallowed. “He’s wearin’ a double gun holster,” her voice lowered to a scandalized whisper, “and carryin’ the biggest rifle I ever saw. He asked for Old James. Miss Catherine, I don’t even know who Old James is.”

Catherine released a sigh tinged with reluctant humor. Probably another miner, coming into town after a typical stint holed up and pounding ore, who hadn’t yet heard of the changes wrought since she’d officially opened The Miner Stage House.

She laid a hand on Susan’s arm. “I’ll deal with this. Just check with the kitchen staff and see if Missus Loman delivered her pies. You know how our customers love their desserts.” She gestured toward her employee’s wayward apparel. “Tie your apron first, please.”

While Susan nodded in obvious relief and bolted for the hallway, Catherine followed at a slower pace, taking the stairs gracefully, calming breaths in and out as she always did before she began each shift of overseeing the main floor of the Stage House.

Her steps faltered when she came face to face with Frank Carter toward the bottom of the wide staircase, his deep gray eyes fastened on her as he clutched a dusty Stetson in one big, callused hand.

Dark, tousled hair curled around his ears, and his wide shoulders filled out his faded work shirt almost to the point of bursting the seams. The soft cotton did nothing to hide his rippling muscles, either.

She lifted a defiant chin. No man should be that handsome.

BOOK REVIEW:

This is the second book I’ve read from the amazing writing duo, Cheryl Yeko and Char Chaffin that go by the penname CiCi Cordelia.  Last year I had the privilege of reading their book, “Realm of the Dragon,” which is part of the Soul Mate Tree Book Series and I totally loved it, so I was very excited to read their latest work, even though it falls into a different book series.

I’m not sure if it was because I just had such high hopes for this book, knowing what these authors are capable of, but for me, this book fell a bit short.  And when I say that, I mean in terms of the characters and the pace.  I still very much enjoy these ladies writing style, the flow of sentences, the vivid details, and of course, their storylines.  Plus, it’s always impossible to tell where Cheryl’s words ended and Char’s began as their lines remain cohesive.

There is so much drama, passion, tension, and resentment in this book – especially between the main characters, Cat, aka Catherine, and Frank.  I liked Cat – she was definitely the best part of the book.  She was smart, strong, fierce, driven, independent, and passionate.  Frank was definitely an alpha male.  He was, well, honestly quite a bit of a jerk – always saying the wrong thing, being rude, treating Cat badly, and making unwise decisions.  However, he does have some redeeming qualities, and over the course of the book – more towards the end – he tries to win back the audience and Cat, but I think for the most part (and possibly for me) it would be too little too late.  He does care about Cat, and he does want to protect her, and keep her safe, especially after the prison break, he just really seems to have a hard time conveying that message.

Also, apparently Cat and Frank had previous baggage from book one that carried over into this book.  I had not read the first book so I felt really out of the loop of why there was so much hatred and distrust right off the bat.

As for the storyline plot point of the prison break, I found this to be quite interesting and intriguing.  This book genre is marketed as a historical western and yet the authors found a way to throw in a mystery, intrigue, and suspense element to the book.  It definitely added a fascinating twist to the story!

I also enjoyed that this book was an old-fashioned historical western that took place in Colorado.  I used to live in Denver, Colorado, but it was nothing like the lovely picturesque Smokey Hills and Bonney Creek that were ever so beautifully described.  The authors continue to find just the right words to describe a scene that make you feel like you are right there and in that moment.

I really liked that the authors are clearly familiar and well-versed on the culture, customs, and traditions of the historical western time period in the 19th century in Colorado.  This helped make the book feel real and authentic.

I also liked that the authors used 19th century slang and phrases that the characters realistically would have said, such as, ““Still sore at me, darlin’?” Frank wasn’t even sure what bee was under her bonnet this time. (201).” Again, it really showed the authors skills and technical ability to write in their own style while still implementing phrases that felt true to the time period and message.

However, even though things were slow back then, I just wish the pace of this book wasn’t one of them.  I would consider this book to be mostly steady paced with a few slow-paced spots throughout the book.

This book is book two of the Brides of Little Creede Book Series.  I had not read the first book before reading this book and unfortunately, I wish I had.  There are so many references to the previous book and the characters significantly overlap.  It could technically be read on its own as a standalone.  I wasn’t completely confused or lost.  I just felt out of the loop and that I was missing lots of important information about the characters and how they got to the point at where they are when book two starts.  So, I personally would recommend reading book one, before you start book two.

Even though I didn’t completely love this book, I still enjoyed reading it and would absolutely recommend this book to all historical western readers!  However, I would just strongly suggest reading book one first.  Regardless, there is a great storyline and fantastic writing that do make this book an interesting and intriguing historical western read and one that should be added to you TBR List!!
