GENRE:   Sci-Fi

BOOK BLURB:

Lonely Regency romance writer travels to the future, meets her fans, dips into a pearly swimming pool, and falls for its owner. Can she ever go home again…

If Jane Austen’s novels had never ever existed, would we have rom-com movies and women’s fiction? But the young writer is discouraged by a publisher’s rejection and ready to give up writing. And an unwelcome marriage proposal she has rashly accepted spells her doom.

Someone must save history and Jane Austen! When a stranger calls and claims to be an interested publisher, a desperate Jane agrees to go with him to his office. That office turns out to be in the future. And it's not an office, but a bookstore in southern California in 2024 where fans of Jane Austen gather every month to discuss her works.

Jane greets the Jane Austen Superfan Club, only to find that superfans can be super picky. Discouraged by their critiques, Jane wants different adventures. Even deadly, dangerous ones. And oh, yes! Romantic ones.

Her “publisher” had hoped to inspire Jane’s writing by showing her a book club devoted to her writing. But when she meets a tall, handsome superfan, Jane decides to chart her own course. She disappears with her new friend, and history may have to save itself …

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT:

Will stood and extended his hand to her. “Shall we?”

She repressed the words. I should infinitely prefer a book. Her dismay tumbled out. “Oh, no! That kind of … dancing ... I couldn’t. Not with so many strangers!”

He shook his head, smiling. His hand still insisted. “You’re not turning me down? If you venture onto the floor with me, I will show you three simple steps. You can follow them or stand still. Raise one hand in the air. We can call whatever you do dancing. So, shall we?”

How could she turn down the man whose blue eyes seemed to pin her into a world she wanted more than the one she had left behind? It would be rude to refuse. They were looking at her, smiles pleasant but quick to be disappointed if she really said no.

Her face flushed fiercely. Despite the gentle evening breeze, the impulse seized her. She rose, took his hand, and let Will lead her to the floor. Jane held onto his hand as he stepped onto it and swayed gently, holding her gaze. But until he reached out his other hand for hers, she had not fully decided. Putting her hand into his, she stepped onto the floor. She knew not what step to take next, but lent herself to Will’s lead.

The deep rhythms thrummed in her limbs, pungent as the scents on the evening air, the Margarita Punch, and Will’s gaze. Gazing up at him was easy now in this dim light. The musicians shifted to another tune, livelier even, all rhythm and little melody, but rounded and warm like she felt now.

“Do you like this?” Will leaned over to ask, his voice low so as not to be overheard.

She smiled with abandon. “I love it!” His touch anchored her. The beam in his eye was a lighthouse on a dark sea.

The McLaren Mysteries Series

Book 16

by Jo A. Hiestand

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: British Mystery
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BOOK BLURB:

Former police detective Michael McLaren arrives in Scotland, ready to immerse himself in the fun of the Highland Games and to enjoy a holiday with Melanie. But the old saying of plans oft going awry rears its ugly head: Simon Shaw, a member of McLaren's folk group, dies. Murdered a year to the day following his uncle's death.

McLaren is determined to find out who killed Simon. Needing justice for his friend is only half of his incentive. He also needs to appease his guilt for suggesting the group sing there in the first place.

As McLaren becomes immersed in the investigation, he wonders if the two deaths are linked, or have to do with the family or their clan. Perhaps Simon's former wife killed him, bent on revenge more powerful than mere divorce. Or was the killing tied to an old hunt for diamonds? After all, diamonds aren't only a girl's best friend. Sometimes they birth greed and murder. And entrap the innocent.

EXCERPT TWO:

Jamie set the cup down, nearly breaking it. "Oh no. You asked me up here to help Mike and I'm going to. Alone. This could be very dangerous, dealing with a criminal. Mike would never forgive me if..." He broke off, a memory of Mike's fiancée welling up in his mind. Shaking his head, he repeated, "No. He'd have my guts for garters if something were to happen to you. I appreciate you wanting to help, Melanie, but I can't agree."

"You need me as your front, Jamie. I think that's the word. Someone to lend credence to the reason you want to find Paul. If I go with you and I have a nice piece of jewelry, you won't seem dodgy." Her eyebrows rose as she gave him a faint smile. She seemed to be holding her breath.

"Melanie"

"A woman hocking her jewelry won't have the whiff of the fishmonger, especially if she seems reluctant to part with an heirloom.  We can even have a bit of dialogue about having to part with great aunt Agnes' favorite necklace. And while I've got his attention, you can have a shufti around his place to suss out what the police will need to pinch him unawares."

Jamie scratched his head, clearly astonished. "I've never heard you use these words before, Melanie. Dodgy. Shufti, Suss out. Fishmonger. Where'd you get them?"

"I listen to Mike. What about it, Jamie? I won't let you down. I was in the thespian club in school."

MY BOOK REVIEW:

This book, “The Low Road,” is an intriguing, mysterious, suspenseful British Mystery filled with deep-rooted Scotland history, exciting Highland Games, captivating characters, and a complicated murder investigation full of suspects!!!

I really enjoyed teaming back up again with one of my favorite investigators, McLaren!!

This is the fifth book I’ve had the pleasure of reading from accomplished author, Jo A. Hiestand.  I was very excited to get the chance to read her latest work – “The Low Road,” which is Book Sixteen in the McLaren Mysteries Book Series, especially since it had been a while since I had the chance to enjoy this beloved book series.  After having left off the series with, “Hide and Seek,” Book Twelve in the McLaren Mysteries Book Series, I was fired up to jump across the pond to Scotland and join McLaren on another exciting murder mystery!!  Even after sadly having to skip over the past four books, I had no trouble getting back into this series without any confusion.

This particular book, “The Low Road,” follows McLaren and his girlfriend, Melanie on a holiday in Scotland to enjoy the Highland Games.  While McLaren is focused on spending time with Melanie, catching up with friends and family, and performing with his band at the Games, his vacation gets uprooted when one of his bandmates, Simon is murdered.  While McLaren has solved his fair share of murder cases, this case presents with many suspects all with powerful motives, leading McLaren’s plans of a fun, easygoing, and relaxing retreat to be anything but!!

At the beginning of this book, before his murder, Simon confides in McLaren about his Uncle Alan having been murdered exactly one year ago here at the Games.  As Simon continues mentioning that the case was never solved and that his uncle’s killer is still out there, he pleads for McLaren to help investigate and finally catch his uncle’s killer.  While McLaren feels for Simon’s loss and the injustice of the killer still out on the streets, McLaren had hoped this trip would be free of investigations and murders – little did he know he was about to be caught up in two!!  McLaren had barely started investigating the crime scene of Uncle Alan’s murder case before he literally stumbled upon a dead body – Simon’s.  While these two cases were a year apart and appear to be under different circumstances, McLaren can’t help but wonder if these two cases are actually connected??  Same killer??  Did Simon know more than he thought??  Did the killer find out McLaren was looking into the case and decide to tie up loose ends??  Is the killer targeting Uncle Alan’s family and if so, who’s next on his list after Uncle Alan's nephew Simon??  Or perhaps this is all just a coincidence??  (For all those Gibbs fans, Rule 39 – there’s no such thing as a coincidence!!)  Regardless, McLaren is now working both cases and is determined to find the killer or killers.

As with Hiestand’s clever writing style filled with red herrings, misdirects, and false trails – this book is brimming with suspicious murder suspects chock-full of secrets, lies, and motives!!

Clearly, McLaren has his work cut out for him as he dives into the wide array of suspects and motives, some of which include an old clan family vendetta, an ex-wife hellbent on revenge, a quarrel over a diamond hunt and a partner left out of the score, a greedy fortune hunter looking for his next big payday, and a lazy, avaricious future son-in-law eagerly awaiting a large family inheritance upon marriage.  As the story weaves through each scenario and suspect, McLaren carefully whittles down the list moving closer and closer to finding the killer(s).

I really enjoyed the main characters, McLaren, Melanie, Jamie, Uncle Brandon, and Grandfather Neill, along the many secondary characters that added support and depth to the story.  As always, I enjoyed McLaren, his strong, handsome, sincere, focused, determined, stubborn demeanor.  And I felt for McLaren as he struggled with the guilt of feeling trapped between his duty of needing to nab the killer(s) and having to cancel plans with Melanie while on their holiday vacation.  I also really liked Melanie and how good she is for McLaren, and just as equally stubborn lol.  I recall several books back, McLaren was left heartbroken and distraught after the tragic murder of his fiancĂ©, Dena.  Understandably, McLaren was damaged, in need of healing, but reluctant to let any women get close to him.  It is wonderful to see this character’s substantial development and growth – and to see him happy again!!  I was also happy to see that Jamie is still around as McLaren’s best mate, and while Jamie wasn’t able to be at the Games at first, he still made a strong appearance in the first half of the book via phone calls and emails as a helpful sounding board.  However, I was excited in the second half of the book, that Jamie was eventually able to team up alongside his mentor and best mate, McLaren, and their new unofficial teammate, Melanie.  I really enjoy books with strong partnerships, and McLaren and Jamie continue to fit that bill.  I also recall McLaren had previously gone through some family drama and was still mending those fences, so it was great to see him still on the ins with the family and spending time with Uncle Brandon, Grandfather Neill, and other extended family.

I am a huge fan of the Olympics, having been to 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City when I was a kid, so I was very intrigued by the Highland Games and really enjoyed this story line!!

As always, I truly appreciate Hiestand’s tenacity for accuracy, creating realistic story lines truly takes her writing skills to the next level.  I also love the in-depth amount of research she did while constructing this book.  It is clear that she is very familiar and well-versed in British police procedures, Scotland history and cultural norms, the McLaren clan records, and useful Gaelic words and phrases.  That plus her love and passion for all things U.K. really shine through in her writings.

I loved the added extras the author provided at the beginning of the book, which included a list of characters with a short description of who they are and how they relate in the story, and a short glossary of unfamiliar Gaelic words that not only included the definition, but also a pronunciation key.  All these extras really enhanced the story and provided important details for the reader to easily follow along.  However, I must note that I was surprised to see Melanie listed only as McLaren’s friend.  As it seems she has appeared in the last few books, with each bringing these two characters closer and closer together and after having professed their love multiple times now, it seems the term friend isn’t quite fitting for these two – perhaps McLaren’s girlfriend, love interest, lady, lady friend, special friend, sweetheart, etc.  I just felt she was mislabeled, Jamie is McLaren’s friend, Melanie is something more.

There are some predictable scenes.  However, there are still a few unexpected twists and turns that you won’t see coming!

This book is Book Sixteen of the McLaren Mysteries Book Series.  Although, this book is part of a book series, it can absolutely be read on its own as a standalone.  As you can see from my past reviews, I’ve randomly been reading books throughout the series, starting with book seven, then nine, ten, twelve, and now sixteen – and haven’t got lost yet lol!!  However, there are strong and significant character and story line overlaps so it may be more enjoyable to start with book one to get the full benefits of this book series!!

All in all, I really enjoyed reading this book and would absolutely recommend it – and this book series!!  I think all British Mystery readers and mystery book fans will be sure to like this book too!!  So, add it to your TBR List and get to reading – you won’t be disappointed!!

AUTHOR BIO:

Jo A. Hiestand grew up on regular doses of music, books, and Girl Scout camping. She gravitated toward writing in her post-high school years and finally did something sensible about it, graduating from Webster University with a BA degree in English and departmental honors. She writes a British mystery series (the McLaren Mysteries)—of which three books have garnered the prestigious N.N. Light’s Book Heaven ‘Best Mystery Novel’ three years straight. She also writes a Missouri-based cozy mystery series (The Cookies & Kilts Mysteries, of which "A Trifling Murder" is the second book) that is grounded in places associated with her camping haunts. The camping is a thing of the past, for the most part, but the music stayed with her in the form of playing guitar and harpsichord, and singing in a folk group. Jo carves jack o’ lanterns badly and sings loudly. She loves barbecue sauce and ice cream (separately, not together), kilts (especially if men wear them), clouds and stormy skies, and the music of G.F. Handel. You can usually find her pulling mystery plots out of scenery—whether from photographs or the real thing.

EXCERPT TWO:

“In this year, 2125, alcohol is still promoted and consumed in large quantities by a generous portion of the world. In the years before, an organisation who called themselves The AAF tried to stop this crippling society drug. They originated in Ireland but were quickly run out of their own country. Next, they travelled down under, all the way to Australia, looking to set up a base camp for their plight. They were quickly run out of there too. (Some say the Aussies were pissed, while running the AAF out of the country). They bounced from country to country, finally setting up shop on the shores of the Arctic. The AAF would fight for fifty years. To give credit where it is due, the AAF held a sensible argument and for an extremely brief moment, a famous politician was subconsciously almost contemplating giving consideration of thought to what they were saying. They spoke of the excessive numbers of Alcoholic Anonymous meeting places. (One can conclude there are an excessive number of alcoholics). They drove the point of the number of alcohol-related road deaths. They touched on the alcohol-related child abuse cases and fired up at the mention of alcohol-fuelled wife bashings. The hospitalised, the alcohol-responsible cancer patients, the effects it has on the liver, kidneys and almost every other vital organ needed for existence. They fought a long, good, worthy fight, but alas, they were extremely outnumbered. The dream of the world adopting the same attitude as religion was lost, buried somewhere under the Vodka bottles with the members of the AAF that drank themselves to death in protest.”

Darren approached his mother Jill Stubbs Mills and asked for her blessing to take her short story, ‘Deception’, and rewrite it into a novel. BOOK BLURB:

A Celtic warrior queen must do the impossible—defeat her sorcerer half-brother and claim the throne. But to do so, she must learn how to strike vengeance from her father’s skull.

AS FORETOLD BY HER FATHER in a vision, Catrin has become a battle-hardened warrior after her trials in the Roman legion and gladiatorial games. She must return to Britannia and pull the cursed dagger out of the serpent’s stone to fulfill her destiny. Only then can she unleash the vengeance from the ancient druids to destroy her evil half-brother, the powerful sorcerer, King Marrock. Always two steps ahead and seemingly unstoppable, Marrock can summon destructive natural forces to crush any rival trying to stop him and has charged his deadliest assassin to bring back Catrin’s head.

To have the slightest chance of beating Marrock, Catrin must forge alliances with former enemies, but she needs someone she can trust. Her only option is to seek military aid from Marcellus—her secret Roman husband. They rekindle their burning passion, but he is playing a deadly game in the political firestorm of the Julio-Claudian dynasty to support Catrin’s cause.

Ultimately, in order to defeat Marrock, Catrin must align herself with a dark druidess and learn how to summon forces from skulls to exact vengeance. But can she and Marcellus outmaneuver political enemies from Rome and Britannia in their quest to vanquish Marrock?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT ONE:
PROLOGUE
White Cliffs in Southeast Britannia,
Eve of Samhain, 31 October, 26 AD
Three human skulls hung over King Marrock’s stallion, dangling from a rope like ornaments. Feeling as invincible as a god, he rode to the precipice of the sheer cliffs and listened to the roar of the waves crashing below. Yet, the raven soaring overhead chilled him to the bone—an omen he was but mortal and could plunge to his death.
He embraced the warmth of Boudicca, his younger half sister, who sat astride his horse in front of him. A toddler full of mirth, she was a healer who could connect to the souls of the dead.
Whereas their mother accused him, also known as Blood Wolf, of being a soulless murderer.
On this eve of Samhain, Marrock knew the souls of the dead freely roamed among the living. He spotted his deadliest assassin, Gawain, searching for the wraith on the emerald hilltop. Gawain had a blue, triangular tattoo of a dagger’s blade on his forehead and deadly weapons underneath his black cloak—the royal insignia of the red dragon stitched to the front panel.
For Marrock, the Otherworldly dragon, with its leathery wings and fiery breath, symbolized perpetual power. It was said that where dragons trod, mystic energy flowed. The untamed beast guarded the portal into the Otherworld.
He yearned for the dragon’s mystic power—the power to summon forces from the earth’s molten underbelly to immolate his rivals.
Gawain pointed to a pile of rocks. “The sheepherder saw the wraith over there,” he said in his deep, gravelly voice.
Marrock handed Boudicca to him and then dismounted, pulling the rope of skulls off his horse and draping it over his shoulders. His family’s skulls served as a warning to anyone who threatened his sovereignty.
Until now, he had only been able to summon the deadly powers from the skulls of his stepmother and bastard sister; their souls were encased in the bone crowns. The soul of his father, King Amren, still eluded Marrock, even after he had sliced off his father’s head. If his father’s soul was indeed wandering the hilltop, he would imprison it in the largest empty skull he had.
Then, he would be able to unleash the collective forces from all three souls.
Glancing all around, he could not see his father’s ghostly figure in the thickening fog. Boudicca’s gleeful giggle roused his attention. He watched her waddle toward a mound of stones and place her tiny hands on the stacked rocks.
“Pa. Pa. Am,” she squealed with delight.
Marrock cast a glance at Gawain. “Did the sheepherder see the wraith disappear into those rocks?”
Gawain nodded. “Indeed, I believe so.”
Marrock transferred the roped skulls from his shoulders to the grassy ground and looked at Gawain. “Help me remove the rocks so I can see what is underneath.”
Gawain joined Marrock in the task of removing the white stones one by one. They inspected each rock for any defect before setting it aside.
Boudicca, mimicking the men, picked up flint pebbles and dropped them on the chalky ground.
After a while, they uncovered the gemstone handle of a dagger; its blade was embedded in a coil-shaped serpent stone. Marrock recognized the jewel-studded dagger as once belonging to his father. Intrigued, he gripped the handle with both hands and strained to pull it out, his muscles aching and his face dripping with sweat from the effort.
Suddenly, to his shock, the hilt turned sizzling hot. He jerked his hands away and inspected the blisters that had formed on his reddened palms. Hearing Boudicca’s gleeful babble, he looked down just as she gripped the dagger’s handle.
“Pa. Pa. Am,” she trilled.
To Marrock’s surprise, Boudicca’s hands did not burn.
A prickling sensation noosed around his neck as he recalled the original curse cast by his mother just before his father had executed her.
The gods demand that the scales be balanced for the life you take. If you deny my soul’s journey to the Otherworld by beheading me, I curse you to the same fate as mine. I prophesy your future queen will beget a daughter who will rise as a raven and join your son, Blood Wolf, and a mighty empire will overtake your kingdom and execute my curse.
King Amren had etched the words of the curse on the dagger’s blade using the Roman alphabet with the belief he could thwart the dark prophecy.
Marrock shuddered.
Does my father’s soul live in the dagger? Has he come back to exact vengeance on me?
Research Behind Skull’s Vengeance
The fourth book in the Curse of Clansmen and Kings series, Skull’s Vengeance is a historical fantasy based on a blend of history and mythology of southeast Celtic tribes in Britain before the invasion of the Roman Emperor Claudius in 43 AD. The biggest challenge in researching this project is the Celts left almost no written records. Historical events had to be supplanted by Greek and Roman historians and medieval writers who spun Celtic mythology into their Christian beliefs. Archaeological findings from this time period also help fill in some of the gaps.
The political backdrop to Skull’s Vengeance is based on what is known of the Celtic tribal kingdoms in southeast Britain (referred as Britannia by the Romans). The southeast British kingdoms evolved differently than those in Wales, Scotland, and Ireland. After Julius Caesar’s military expeditions to this area in 55–54 BC, Rome maintained strong influence over the politics and trade in southeast Britain. Rome demanded hostages to ensure that treaty agreements were met. Hostages were frequently young males, although taking females was not unheard of, and they came from royal families. They were allowed to move freely in public places with minimal security measures to prevent their escape. The Roman patrician watching over them could serve as patron, father, and teacher. Many of the first century southeast British rulers were educated in Rome and adopted Roman taste for luxury goods. To support their extravagant lifestyles, pro-Roman kings warred with rival kingdoms to expand their territory and to supply the Roman Empire. The rulers minted coins with their names mainly written in Latin.
Although there is no written account of any Roman expeditionary forces sent to Britain before Claudius’s invasion in 43 A.D., there are recorded incidents of pro-Roman rulers pleading for Rome’s help to intervene on their behalf. Client kings, paying tribute to Rome, could rule their kingdoms independently, similar to Cleopatra’s reign in Egypt.
Although the Celtic society was becoming more paternalistic, women were still held in high regard and could rule. There is historical evidence that Celtic women fought in battles and took on military leadership. The Roman historian, Ammianus Marcellinus, described Celtic women in Gaul (modern day France) as “…usually strong and with blue eyes; especially when, swelling her neck, gnashing her teeth, and brandishing her sallow arms of enormous size, she begins to strike blows mingled with kicks, as if they were so many missiles sent from the string of the catapult.”
The Roman historian, Tacticus, writes the British were accustomed to women commanders in war. Boudicca was a warrior queen who united the Celtic tribes in Britain and almost expelled their Roman conquerors in 61 AD. She was also known as a powerful druidess who Romans claimed sacrificed some of her victims to the war goddess Andaste.
Archaeological evidence supports that Claudius’s invasion was nothing more than a peace-keeping mission to halt the expansion of the anti-Roman factions led by Cunobelin’s sons, Caratacus and Togodumnus. There may have already been a Roman military presence that protected the areas of Britain vital to trading with the empire. The tribal names used in the novel are based on Ptolemy’s map of Celtic kingdoms generated in 150 AD.
Most of the Celtic characters in this novel are fictional except for Cunobelin, King of the Catuvellauni (referred to as the King of Britannia by the Romans), and his sons, Adminius and Caratacus. Based on coin distribution, Adminius ruled over the Cantiaci but was deposed in 39 or 40 AD. His fall may have been the result of a revolt of the Cantiaci people against the Catuvellauni rule. He fled to continental Europe and surrendered to Emperor Caligula, who falsely heralded this as a great victory over Britannia. Epaticcus, the brother of Cunobelin and the ruler of the Atrebates Tribe at Calleva (modern-day Silchester), is another historical figure introduced in this book.
The characterization of Catrin is based on historical figures such as Boudicca and on the complex archetypes of ancient Celtic goddesses whose functions embrace the entire religious spectrum from healing to warfare, from creation to destruction, and from birth to death. In Irish mythology, war goddesses were associated with fertility and sovereignty. Many of the Irish goddesses were destructive and promiscuous, and personified warlike strength to defend their land so it could flourish.
Though some of the Roman characters in Skull’s Vengeance are fictional, some are some based on historical figures during the tumultuous rein of Emperor Tiberius Caesar Augustus. Tiberius was the second emperor of Rome. Though he’d been an able general and diplomat, the final years in his reign were tyrannical. Rumors abound of his sexual perversity and child molestation. According to the Roman historian Tacitus, Tiberius loathed his mother and sent Caligula to deliver her funeral oration in 29 A.D. while he remained isolated on Capri.
During this period, the infamous Praetorian Prefect, Lucius Aelius Sejanus, over-reached to gain power from Tiberius through murder, conspiracy, and betrayal. At the pinnacle of Sejanus’s power as consul in 31 A.D., Tiberius unexpectedly had him arrested and mercilessly executed. Antonia Minor, the daughter of Mark Antony and Octavia (sister-in-law of Tiberius), may have had a role in the downfall of Sejanus due to fears that her grandson, Caligula, could meet the tragic fate of his older brothers whom Sejanus arrested and imprisoned.
Lucius Antonius was the son of Iullus Antonius and the grandson of Mark Antony. Little is known about Lucius Antonius except that he lived in Gaul after his father, Iullus Antonius, was accused of treason and forced to fall on his sword.
