Bargaining with the Boss
by Jennifer Shirk

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Kinsley just wanted to have some fun for a change. Then she wakes up in a stranger’s bed, with her bridesmaid dress on backward and a hazy memory of what happened at her friend’s wedding. With a quick escape, she can get back to her predictable life. But then she meets her new boss—the same guy she’d woken up next to—and seeing him with a clear head doesn’t make him any less attractive.

Mixing business with pleasure has never been Damon’s style, and easily avoided, but the hotel he just bought comes with an unexpected perk—its manager. “Sensible” Kinsley today is as alluring as “impulsive” Kinsley was the night before, and she talks him into a deal. If she can turn around the hotel by the end of summer, he won’t tear it down to put up a more profitable casino.

Their plan is simple…until falling for each other becomes more than they bargained for.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT TWO:
Damon pierced her with his blue-eyed gaze for several long seconds, as if debating something in his mind before finally taking hold of her hand. “Good night, Kinsley.” Then he leaned in and brought his mouth across hers. Once she got over the shock of his lips on hers, she kissed him back, tightening her grip on his hand for balance.
Oh, but he had a nice, soft, giving mouth, like their lips were two puzzle pieces fitting perfectly together. The world around her disappeared as he wove his hands into her hair, tilting her head back. He trailed light kisses down her neck, bringing every nerve in her body to high alert and begging for even more of his touch. She’d never felt like this before with a man—maybe it was the excitement of him being a virtual stranger or maybe just the man himself, but her body came alive. She didn’t want it to end.
And for once in her sensible life, she wanted to do the insensible thing.
She eased back slowly, gaining confidence when she heard him exude a low moan. “Um, yeah, well then.” She licked her lips, growing dizzier when she tasted him again. “On second thought, maybe…we don’t have to say good night just yet. I mean, if you’re still interested,” she hastily added.
A slow, lethal grin stretched Damon’s lips as he took hold of her hand again. “Yes. I’m definitely interested.”
Ghost Writer
by Alison Bruce
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Paranormal Suspense

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
She has to deal with two kinds of spooks: spies and ghosts.
But which one is trying to kill her?
Jen Kirby has seen ghosts since she was a teen, but she can’t talk to them or help them cross over. And, after a violent death in the family, she doesn’t want to see them anymore.
In her role as ghostwriter, Jen joins a Canadian Arctic expedition to document and help solve a forty-year-old mystery involving an American submarine station lost during the Cold War. The trouble is, there are people—living and dead—who don't want the story told, and they’ll do anything to stop her.
Now Jen is haunted by ghosts she can’t avoid or handle alone. That means confiding in the one man she doesn’t want to dismiss her as “crazy.” But can he help? Or is he part of the problem?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT TWO:

That night, I dreamed of the station again. This didn't surprise me. All my life, whenever something big was looming on my horizon, I would dream about it the night before. I rehearsed exams, job interviews, even giving birth although the last one had little bearing on reality.

The station dreams felt like my pre-birth dreams, filled with anticipatory anxiety. There was a lot of blood in those dreams too.

I had a repeat of the first dream, woke up, walked around a bit and went back to sleep only to have it repeat again. When I saw which way the dream was going, I decided I needed to wake up. Usually I can do this when I know I'm dreaming. This time, it was like waking up and discovering that reality was scarier than the dream.

Six men sit around the table playing poker. They are drinking coffee, though as I watched, one man pulls a flask out of his pocket and hands it around. A few are smoking. Contrails of cigarette smoke drift towards the exhaust fans.

A seventh man enters. The flask disappears and two of the smokers stubbed out their butts. The game continues, but there's no laughter. Then comes the blood and the screams. There is a murderer aboard the station. He has killed all the others and is now coming for me.

GUEST POST:

Who Inspired Your Love for Books?

I grew up surrounded by books. I can remember climbing the built-in bookshelves my father constructed when my parents turned the basement bedrooms into a playroom. Those shelves were full to capacity with everything from the collected works of George Bernard Shaw to pulp fiction spy thrillers.

One of my early independent book reports was on Alex Hailey’s Airport, a book that had caught my eye when climbing the shelves.  I was the kind of kid that would haunt the library for more adventures of Freddy the Pig and then pick up And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie. I loved Alice in Wonderland and Georgette Heyer’s Regency romances in equal measure. The day I discovered Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series in a London bookstore, I was looking to fill in the gaps in my Paddington Bear books.

I have always been able to get lost in books. I was off school a lot because of ear infections. Although we were allowed to watch TV when we were home sick, there wasn’t much to watch besides soap operas and game shows until after school. Reading was my distraction. At age nine I had an ear operation that cut down the infections but made me completely deaf in one ear. When it got too hard to make out what people were saying, I’d tune them out and either read or daydream.  When the daydreams got too complicated to keep straight, I started writing them out, first as a synopsis with a few scenes, then as stories.

No matter where I went, I had a book to read and a clipboard to write on. Things haven’t changed much except my clipboard and books all fit on a tablet.

Wraith
by Gwenan Haines

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Fantasy
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Sixteen years ago, Kira Chiklak’s mother promised her a miracle on Christmas morning. Instead, she woke to the news her brother was gone forever. The Alaskan pilot’s dreams have always told her the future but have never revealed the secrets of her past.

Now Kira’s dreams are warning her another child in Amarok is in danger of meeting the same fate as her brother. As Kira races to save Annie Michaels’ life she comes to believe her past and Annie’s future are inextricably linked.

The last thing Hunter Jackson expects to do during Spring Break is unravel a mystery. When Kira asks for his assistance, he can’t refuse her request. But can he help her protect Annie when his own heart is at risk?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT ONE:
Amarok, Alaska
There are two kinds of dreams. Dreams that come true and dreams that don’t. When I say that to most people they think I’m talking about wishes. What I want out of life, like going to college or getting married or having kids. They think I’m wondering about the future or maybe reflecting on things that happened in the past. They don’t say it to my face but I know they’re thinking about my brother. I know they’re thinking of the dream of our family that died when he disappeared.
That’s not what I mean. Because when I dream at night some of my dreams are just like everybody else’s. The kind where you’re taking a final you didn’t study for or you have to recite the lines to a play you didn’t know you were cast in. Or the senseless dreams everybody has where your mother turns into a stranger but you know it’s really your mother and you’re at your house and it’s definitely your house even though it looks completely different. Then you wake up and try to sort it all out and sometimes you can but more often you can’t so you just forget about it.
I have dreams like that all the time. In fact, most of my dreams are dull as white rice. Or maybe just plain weird. But none of those dreams ever come true.
Sometimes I have the other kind of dream though. When I was four I dreamt of my father floating beneath the water surrounded by cool green light. It closed over him as he sank farther and farther from the surface until at last he stopped struggling and disappeared inside the darkness. I woke in the night, his bright eyes still before me, and cried out. My mother came running and smoothed my hair back from my forehead. “It’s just a nightmare, Kira,” she whispered. “Your father will return in the morning. Go back to sleep.”
I told her it was more than that, but she didn’t believe me. Not that I blame her. She couldn’t imagine the Great Spirit would take her husband from her after he had already called back her only son. When the fishermen found my father’s boat drifting on the ocean the next day my mother refused to believe it. “He’ll be back,” she told them, even after two weeks had passed with no sign of him. “Wait and see.”
After two months went by and the ice began to freeze up for the winter she finally held a funeral for him. That was sixteen years ago and some nights she sits out on her porch with her eyes fixed on the sea as if he’ll still sail back to her.
I never waited for my father. I knew my dream of him was the kind that comes true.
My brother is a different story. I’m the one waiting for him to come back to us someday. I’m the one who knows he’s not really dead, whatever my mother says. The dreams tell me so and I believe them. Unlike most of the people I know, they haven’t lied to me yet.
Lately I hadn’t been dreaming about my brother, I’d been dreaming about Annie. Annie was the four-year-old daughter of Liv and Gavin Michaels, the couple who ran the Blue Moon Café in town. It was more of a restaurant than a café but the Michaels had relocated to Alaska from New York City and I guess they missed the whole urban mood. Or maybe they were trying to recreate it in Amarok. Yeah, good luck with that guys.
REVIEW:
Last month I had the lucky opportunity to be introduced to this author’s work.  I read and reviewed her latest book then and loved it!  So, I jumped at this chance to read and review her new book and found myself again mesmerized by her words.
This book is book one in the Shadow World Book Series.
This book is about Kira, a strong-willed, intelligent, stubborn pilot in Alaska.  Kira has dreams – very strong, deep, intense dreams that allow her to feel death and tell when someone is danger.  Several years earlier her brother went missing and is considered dead.  However, no body has ever been recovered and Kira does not believe her brother is actually dead.  She knows she would have felt it if he really died and she didn’t feel it.  Kira continues to look for him.
One night Kira starts having these powerful dreams warning her that a child, Annie Michaels, is about to reach the same fate as her missing brother.  Unfortunately, when Kira talks to Annie’s parents about her dreams, they don’t believe her.  Kira knows she needs help to save Annie and so she turns to the one person who has been there for her, Hunter.  Hunter is just as stubborn as Kira which makes for some fun and witty banter between these two!  Hunter is really a good guy and it becomes pretty obvious that he likes Kira as more than just a friend.  However, Kira is not so sure she’s willing to risk her one and only friendship for something that probably won’t work out in the end.  Nonetheless, when Annie is taken, Kira and Hunter team up and put everything on the line to save and rescue Annie.
This book is full of mystery, adventure, action, excitement, suspense, intrigue, fantasy, and even a bit of romance thrown in!  As you can see, this book has something to offer pretty much every genre reader!
Although this book’s main genre is listed as fantasy I don’t feel like the book revolved around that – which I was thankful for.  Don’t get me wrong, the fantasy theme is definitely in there, but there is just so much else going on too, that the mystery and suspense themes are equally as valid and as important.
As usual with Gwenan Haines books, I really like the characters!  She writes well-developed, confident, likable, genuine characters.  I enjoyed following Kira and Hunter’s story!  They had great chemistry and played well off each other!
The pace of the book is fast to steady.  It keeps you fully engaged and entertained to the very last page!
I must warn you though, the ending isn’t tidy!  There are definitely many questions left unanswered.  Hopefully they will be addressed in book two as this book is part of a book series.  But fair warning – you may be left upset or disappointed not knowing certain things and having more questions than answers at the end.  That is all I’m going to say as I try hard not to have any spoilers in my book reviews.
All in all, I really enjoyed reading this book and would absolutely recommend this book to all readers as this book offers mystery, suspense, action, adventure, excitement, thriller, intrigue, fantasy, romance, and so much more!
EXCERPT ONE:
“What did you hit! Where is the plane?” the supervisor said frantically, hovering over Marcus’s shoulder.
When Marcus looked at the screen where there was once no blip there were now four and all of them were labeled SW3678.
“Southwest 3678 descend and maintain 5000”
“What are you doing? There’re already at 5000” the supervisor yelled.
Marcus ignored the supervisor and concentrated on the task at hand. Two planes coming in from the northwest, one coming from the south and southwest 3678.
His supervisor called the man next to him, “Jim take the handoff in the northwest and Paul take Pan 16 in south”
“Southwest 3678 cleared ILS 25 left approach”
Marcus wiped the sweat from his brow as he watched all 4 blips approach runway 25L.
“Southwest 3678 are you on the frequency?”
There was nothing but crackle.
“Southwest 3678 contact the tower.”
The blips started to ascend on the approach.
“No, no” Marcus whispered.
Just like it started, the plane began it’s descent and there was only one blip on the screen for flight 3678.
“It’s coming in too fast.” Marcus murmured
Then the sounds of SouthWest came back on and all they could hear were the cries of help from the aircraft.
Marcus didn’t think “ emergency vehicles to 25L, everyone calling stand by ”
REVIEW:
This book has a lot going on!  Everything from hijacked planes, scary dark web auctions, gigantic sums of money, even bigger secrets, double crosses, and so much more!
This book is book one in the Chest of Secrets Book Series.
I have always found the “Dark web” topic quite intriguing and was very excited to read this book and see the author’s take on it!
Unfortunately, I found this book to be a bit jumpy and boring at times.  It took me a couple weeks to finally finish reading it as I found myself easily setting it down and getting distracted.
I really liked the concept of the book and was intrigued by the storyline and the characters.
This book is full of mystery, suspense, intrigue, and action.
There are quite a few twists and turns that you probably won’t see coming!  Along with many double crosses that make it difficult at times to identify the good guys from the bad guys.
This book is written with several flashbacks and time jumps that make it sometimes unclear what exactly is happening or even how that particular scene contributes to the main story or the plot.
This book is written in multiple POVs and unfortunately it only added to the confusion and distraction.
This book tends to go a bit back and forth on the pace levels.  It takes off and so much excitement is happening, but then backs off, and slows way down.  Then it’ll speed back up and gets OMG! and then it’s right back to slow.  This pattern just continues to repeat pretty much through the whole book.  Sadly, this yo-yo effect made the book somewhat hard to finish.  Which is depressing since there is so much mystery and intrigue to this story that it should have been a glued to the book read!
All in all, there were just a few hang-ups for me, but overall, I still enjoyed reading this book and would still recommend it.  There is a great storyline and awesome characters that do make this book an interesting modern-day thriller!
AUTHOR BIO:
Being a child of divorce, I have experienced both sides of the American Family. I understand there is a loss to the family unit that no longer has a father in it.  In the face of that loss, I discovered a woman can rise to the occasion and not replace a man but offer her own strength, moral compass and guidance. In this environment a child can grow up feeling loved, accepted and ultimately successful in life.
Those experiences in my formative years have made me more aware of the women around me and the daily feats of resourcefulness and ingenuity that goes unnoticed and unacknowledged by society. My stories highlight societal issues and the ever-changing challenges women face that I've observed during my life.
