The House on Devil's Bar
by Jessie McAlan

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: US Amateur Sleuth
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

The police verdict of a woman’s accidental drowning in the Mississippi River does more than set tongues wagging in the small Missouri town of Klim; it starts a flood of cancellations that threaten to sink Rona Murray’s bakery and events business. And blacken her good name. Determined to save both, she starts her own investigation to prove she and her property are blameless.  Barbara Lindborg had stopped by Linn House to consider renting it for a party. Yet, when Rona returned from accepting a delivery, the woman had vanished.

Rona’s preliminary search for Barbara yields nothing more than suggestive footprints on the Bar.  Did the woman accidentally fall into the river?  Was she pushed – and if so, why?  A later hunt reveals Barbara’s cell phone in the woods. How did it get halfway up the hill if the woman drowned a hundred feet below? The phone’s camera holds snaps of Klim, its residents, and the Bar. Do any of these hold a clue to her death? Or did her and Rona’s earlier conversation about history and treasure have a different meaning?

Suspects and motives pop up like bubbles in yeast. Is Matt, an employee, still bitter about his and Barbara’s divorce? What about Rona’s own ex, Johnny? Is he trying to drive her out of business, or is his current girlfriend, Crystal, jealous of their relationship and trying to eliminate the competition? A bit like calling the kettle black, for Crystal seems very friendly with Frank, the bad boy neighbor. Frank isn’t lily-white, either. He dislikes Rona; is he behind the pranks on her property or mixed up in Barbara’s death?  It isn’t until Rona’s life is threatened one stormy night that she learns the killer’s identity and her true feelings about Johnny.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT ONE:
Rona paused in the doorway and watched Crystal climb the steps to the gazebo.
Johnny smiled, amused at Rona’s interest. “She’s a nature lover.”
“Yeah?”
“Forget about her for the moment, Ronnie.”
“I’d be glad to. Can you? She seems to be…well endowed.”
“Yes.”
“I’m speaking of all those gold bracelets, Dear.”
“Right. I think they’re trinkets from her ex-husband.”
“I didn’t know the wife got gifts at the divorce proceedings.”
“I didn’t phrase that right, Ronnie. He gave them to her during their marriage.”
“So she clings to them instead of his arm. Charming.”
REVIEW:
Sadly, I found this book to be a bit slow and somewhat confusing at times.
This book focuses on Rona, the owner of Rona Murray’s Bakery and Events.  After Rona’s business is negatively impacted by a woman’s disappearance and her possible accidental drowning Rona takes it upon herself to solve the mystery and get her business back on the fast track.
There are lots of details and analogies that I thought went a little overboard.  Maybe it’s how people in Missouri talk?  I found it occasionally distracting and tiresome.
It’s clear Rona is no professional sleuth.  I found Rona to be quite bold, stubborn, persistent, and naïve.  She definitely doesn’t have a hard time finding trouble or holding back.  Unfortunately, this combo allows for her to end up in some tricky situations that she may or may not make it out of alive.
The pace of the book is mostly slow, but there are a few twists and turns that unfold throughout the book, that create some suspense.
There were so many characters that bounced in and out throughout the story.  It was somewhat difficult to keep everyone straight and identify their importance or relevance to the case.  Perhaps this was more to introduce the town for future books in the series rather than their significance to this particular story.
There is a lot of detail in this book that allow for the reader to easily picture the cute, small town of Klim, Missouri.  The countryside and river truly sound beautifully picturesque.
This book is book one in The Linn House Mystery Book Series.
If you enjoy small towns and amateur mystery books then you should add, “House on Devil’s Bar,” to your TBR List!
Although, this was not a favorite for me, I do have high hopes for Jessie McAlan’s writing and look forward to seeing what the rest of the series brings.
Sweat
by Coco Gem
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Erotica/Romance

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
“The Tryst” tells the story of one woman desperate for the approval of her very dominant partner and the lengths she is willing to go to in order to earn it.
“Me, Her, and Him” suggests that the best way to get over an old man is to get under a new one... especially when his gorgeous wife comes as part of the deal.
From stories of love and passion like “The Elevator” to stories of sheer carnal, insatiable desire like “Bad Girl,” Sweat chronicles the stories of women who take control of their sexuality and go after what satisfies them most—at any cost.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT TWO:

Excerpt from “The Club”

I am a girl who plays it safe.

Every Friday night, I soak in the tub, pour myself a glass of pinot noir, and curl up with a good book or movie. I am usually deep under my covers by midnight at the latest, every single Friday night. This Friday night started off the same as every one before it. Halfway through my soak, I received a text. It was pretty simple. An address, and the words, Come out and play.

At that moment, I decided that, tonight, I would not be the safe girl. I would let caution go down the drain with my bathwater. I could be responsible tomorrow. I climbed out the warm, soapy water, wrapped myself in a towel, and walked into my closet.

Twenty minutes later, I catch my reflection in the rearview mirror... Not bad. My chocolate skin is clear and beautiful, and my hair blows in the nighttime breeze. My lips and nails are a brazen, come-fuck-me red, and they contrast with the simplicity of my outfit—a semi-tight fitting black dress (I am braless, because only good girls wear bras) and black Chucks. My freshly scrubbed body smells like cocoa butter and black soap. I turn the music up louder and sing along with the filthy lyrics, careful not to miss my exit. I reach my destination, find a place to park, feed the meter, and send the text I know he's waiting for.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GUEST POST:
It’s so hard to pitch my writing. It’s my baby… kind of like me giving you reasons why you should love my son. You should love him because he’s amazing… duh!
Okay. So here goes.
Sweat is a book about strong, sexual women.
I am always fascinated by the stigma that exists in our society that there is something nasty about a woman who enjoys sex. I am often on Twitter, and I read so many men calling women hoes and thots for no other reason than the fact that these women are unashamed of their sexual selves and determined to take control of their sexual prowess. Why is it acceptable for men to bed countless women but deplorable when women do the same? A man over 35 who is single is a spinster. A single 35 year old woman is an old maid. Men are allowed to be completely immoral sexually and are expected to have emotionless, casual sex. Why can’t women do the same?
I wanted to write stories from the perspective of women who made these sexual decisions for themselves without apology. I wanted to show that good sex can exist for women outside of long-term relationships or marriages, and that women could enjoy themselves in the throes of casual sex just like men can. These women are all facing different situations in their lives, and find themselves having to make sexual decisions. They choose, and have amazing sex in the process.
I enjoy erotica because I think carnality is beautiful and raw and deeply honest. I started writing it as just a hobby, but it seems to have turned into something much more. I am excited about this project and hope you will enjoy these short stories and poems as much as I enjoyed writing them.
Are you a book reviewer?
You can request a review copy here!
EXCERPT:
Quinn had a special book, a book that had been with her since she was a teenager. This was the notebook that she kept all of her dream drawings in. Sometimes she would add words to the sketches and sometimes she wouldn’t. There were hundreds of drawings in this book, some the size of a quarter, and some – after a particular bad night of dreaming – took up an entire page of hard angry charcoal strokes.
That book was private, and Quinn kept it to herself. That was just for her. For so long she hadn’t been able to tell what was real and what was fantasy, thinking maybe she herself was just a figment of someone else’s imagination. Her sketchbook was Quinn’s way of knowing she was real. Maybe she had imagined seeing the things she saw, or knowing the things that she had forgotten, but she hadn’t fabricated drawing the pictures or writing the words. The pictures and words would always be there, permanently tattooed into the book. If she opened the pages and saw those things then she would know that in that very moment, she was present. She existed. She was.
AUTHOR BIO:
Desiree lives in Northwest Ohio with her husband, two children, and two rowdy cats. She is a craft addicted, roller derby skating amateur foody who loves to enjoy a glass of chardonnay with a side of whatever snack the kids left untouched in the pantry, most likely goldfish crackers.
She writes contemporary and fantasy/paranormal romance because fairy tales are where it's at. She loves the pull of magic, the light and the dark of it, as well as the effort the characters must go through to reach their happily ever after.
Uncle Neddy’s Funeral - The King Of Bad Decisions.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT TWO:

“Brothers and sisters, we have come to say good bye to our brother, Giuseppe Vittorio Vaffanculo.”

“For crying aloud did this guy even know Neddy?” Gia hissed in her sister’s ear. The middle child of the Vaffanculo relations, Gia sat with arms folded across her satin black dress, in her opinion, a beautiful garment wasted on a funeral. Her eyes volleyed between the crowded sanctuary and the man standing at the podium. Her younger sister by a year, Amelia, stared at the priest with intent. Her eyes tearing at the mention of her favorite uncle’s name.

“Giuseppe was an exceptional man: father, brother, son…” as the priest paused a moment Amelia glanced over at her ninety-year-old grandmother who sat playing with her false teeth. She nudged her sister in grandma’s direction. Grandma, dressed in traditional funeral black, included the customary laced veil, now thrown haphazardly over her head. Grandma Lena swished her teeth around her mouth, popped them through her lips, then caught the full set in her hand. Not a bit of spit followed. Without missing a beat she’d place the choppers back in to start again.

“Oh, this is going to be entertaining,” Gia smirked.

“Giuseppe was a fine man who loved his wife…”

“Which is he referring to?” Amelia giggled.

“…Adored his children…”

“Only those he knew about…” without missing a beat Gia responded.

“…And was a wonderful son…” a “humpf” came from the direction of their grandmother. The girls watched their mother squat walk towards grandma. She knelt in front of her, rubs the old lady’s arm, as she whispered something in her ear.
Grandma turned around and flicked her wrist in her daughter-in-law’s direction. The girls’ eyes grew wide.

“We would get slapped,” Gia pointed out to a nodding Amelia. Their mother just shrugged stood fully erect, walked back to her seat. Her face expressionless.

As the priest continued to extoll virtues her uncle never possessed, Gia looked around the crowded funeral home. Bright purple flower arrangements lined the wall then veered around the back of the casket. Family and friends sat, stood, and waited in the adjacent rooms, spilling outdoors under the canvass walkways to pay respects. She knew most of the folks around here all her life, some by reputation, most by some sort of relation.

“Giuseppe was a pillar in the community. He had a big heart…”

“Are you sure he’s talking about Uncle Neddy?” Amelia said.

“I don’t think this one had met him. He’s new. Remember, straight off the boat from the mothership,” The priest appeared to be moving around the alter to avoid stepping in something.

“Don’t you mean Mother Land?”

“Ship…Land…Tomato…Tomato… What is the difference? The guy knows nothing about our family or the person he is talking about.” Gia moved her right hand as she spoke, the same mannerism her mother and grandma used.

“Well he knows some stuff…”

“Yeah, what is on the script. Aunt Neddy the fourth wrote it up or do you think she’d let the fifth to be do the eulogy?”

“I think she’d rather be reading the fifth to be’s eulogy.” As both girls began to snicker Gia glanced up in to their mother’s warning glare. In silence Angela Victorio Cuzzuto Vaffanculo held up one finger. Gia nudged her sister. She gave a head nod towards their mother. Elegantly she raised a second finger. Her dark blue eyes never wavered.

Both Gia and Amelia gave a slight nod, leaned back in their chairs. Legs crossed at the knees they mirrored each other’s worried glances, unconsciously tapping their bottom foot. Angela relaxed a little in her chair. To her left, her husband Joe, snored quietly. Angela poked his arm. He would jump a little, smile at her, only to close his eyes again.

He held her left hand in his. Every so often she would feel a gentle squeeze. Ah, my Joseph, he works so hard at the restaurant. Still cleaning up his brother’s messes. She thought, so he’s napping. He is not disrespectful. It’s his brother’s funeral not mine. He’s better not nap at my funeral. A laugh escapes from her lips. Who am I kidding. I will bury him first. Here, a little nap hurts no one. Uhg – look at the line – I’m sure half are here because they love Neddy, the others want to make sure he’s dead. Her lips turned up into a discreet smile. Iksch – This is all good. All these people here. This will help us with our situation. I wonder how many know? She glances at her mother-in-law who now moved from playing with her teeth to eating what looks like a pignoli cookie. Now where did those cookies come from? Crumbs float down the old lady’s face. Angela nudged a tissue into Enzo’s hand. She pointed towards the older lady. “Oh, for crying aloud,” he proceeded to float down the row to the matriarch’s side, causing as little commotion as possible.

“Mrs. V, you need to stop with the cookies,” he reprimanded in a hushed voice the people in the back of the room could hear.

“I’m ninety years old…”

“You are not ninety, you are only eighty-five.”

“The stunad caused me so much stress I aged five years.” Enzo bit the inside of his cheek yet the grin across his face gave him away.

“I understand, but still, it is disrespectful to be chowing down at Neddy’s…”

“What’s disrespectful is having this idiota talk about someone her never met!” As the word idiota came out of the old lady’s lips, all those in close vicinity did the sign of the cross. The gesture continued down the rows like the wave at a football game.
