I snuggled deeper into the cosy bedding, lazy and heavy-limbed. Shifting slightly, warmth spread through me as the slight stickiness between my legs brought with it delicious memories of the night before. I never dreamed that I could be so wanton, so wildly desperate for one man’s touch.

And boy, did he touch! His potency evident in every aching muscle in my body.

Mmmm. Heat flickered as his musky scent infused my senses.

“Katya.”

I loved his voice. Especially when he said my name, so deep, rich like dark molasses.

“Katya!”

I forced my lids open. And drowned in sensual, male beauty. “Hi,” I purred. And it was a purr. I sounded like a sated cat. Inching a hand out from under the covers, I reached up, hungry to stroke his rough morning stubble.

He reared back as if stung.

What?

My hand hovered midair as he lowered himself to a chair that was pulled up close to the bedside.

How did that chair get there? Was he watching me sleep?

Sluggish, I looked at the window. The curtains were drawn together but didn’t quite meet. Faint light trickled in. It was barely morning. I looked back at Michale and cold started to seep in. Shit. He was fully clothed, he was even wearing his jacket. Only his hair looked out of place. He obviously couldn’t find the cord that I’d enthusiastically pulled from it like a wild woman, and now it hung loose to his shoulders. Bed-hair. Do men get bed-hair?

2:20 A.M. Saturday, 2 May 1998

Emma didn’t know how long he hid, silent and unmoving, in the large Victorian wardrobe to the side of her single bed. She didn’t know how long he peered, salivating and drooling, between the two heavy dark oak doors and watched, mesmerised, as she slowly drifted into fitful sleep. She didn’t know what time he pushed the doors open and crept towards her in the drab grey darkness of the night. But he did. She knew that he did.

 

Emma woke with a start, tense, alert, and opened her bleary eyes, telling herself insistently that the dark silhouette slowly approaching her was the nightmare construct of her subconscious mind. But initial anxiety became blind panic as the inky shadow took on an obvious human form that suddenly gained pace and loomed over her. And then a hand, a large hot clammy hand, pulled the bedclothes over her head, clamped her mouth tight shut and silenced her scream before it materialised.

 

A myriad unwelcome thoughts invaded her troubled mind as he pinned her head to the pillow and raised his free arm high above his head, before closing his fingers tightly, forming his hand into a formidable weapon and bringing it crashing down, again and again and again, with all the force he could muster, rendering her unconscious and bleeding.

The book is a fast-paced dark psychological thriller set in Wales, a small Celtic country that borders England. And, yes, Wales is a country with its own language, flag and government, although many American cities have bigger populations than the entire country. For everyone else, Emma has vanished into thin air. Her distraught mother seeks the help of DI Gareth Gravel. Together with DS Clive Rankin, the police officers start the search for the missing girl. However they soon stumble upon a very grisly find. The bodies of five young girls, all with similar features to Emma's, are found buried in shallow graves. Is this the work of the same man that has kidnapped Emma? Are they too late? Has Emma been murdered and buried somewhere else? Will they ever find her? The police fear the worst...

The whole idea of this book - a sort of human zoo - is simply ingenious and blood-curdling. The story is very gripping and tense. We follow Emma inside the room, frightened, not knowing whether it's day or night, at the mercy of her captor and his sadistic fantasies, and on the outside we follow the police investigating her disappearance and the murders.

Lady Grace found herself in quite a dilemma.  If she accepted Mr. Calshot’s escort into the drawing room, she would by default bring attention to herself simply due to her companion.  However, to enter a room full of people on her own had always been frightfully difficult, and to disengage herself from him after he had so kindly rescued her from Higgins, not to mention the man who had shot at her this afternoon would be unbearably rude.  Added to that she suspected that Mr. Calshot was a man impossible to refuse.  He stood there at the doorway to the drawing room where the rest of the guests were mingling before dinner as if sensing her hesitation, a gentle smile crinkling the corners of his eyes. 

She tightened her fingers briefly on his arm .  She could feel the warmth and strength under her fingers and shivered slightly. 

“Are you cold my lady?” His deep voice reverberated through her touching her core, nearly making her shiver again.   

“No, thank you for your concern Mr. Calshot,” she returned, clearing her throat when her first attempt at speech was dry.  She knew there was no reason to be frightened as they walked into a crowded drawing room.  Whoever it was trying to injure her would not try in such a public location.  However, the allure of the man walking next to her was terrifying in its intensity and she felt it stealing through her, even as she wanted to press her body against his.

When Roselyn is not managing her two wonderful children, amazing husband, a dog, a cat, four chickens and a bee hive, she can be found either reading or writing.  Oh, and the day job where she develops and implements outreach programming for K-12 in entrepreneurship.  She’s lived most of her life in New Mexico and loves the blue skies and being able to see hundreds of miles most days, but is always ready for a new adventure in a new place.  Writing gives her the opportunity to create them on the page when she can’t actually jump in the car and go.
