GENRE: Romantic Suspense

BLURB:

Ever since a devastating family tragedy seventeen years ago, Grace Bighill has struggled to keep her remaining family from falling apart. Then the discovery of her mother's body in the woods unearths a connection to a decades old murder case, and Grace is dragged into a politician's bitter bid for revenge.

Constable Mike Davenport's days in Aspen Lake are numbered. He's ready to take his next step up the career ladder somewhere a lot more cosmopolitan. He's avoided any emotional attachments, despite having fallen hard for a certain stubborn local. But when a body turns up, Mike's careful intentions collapse in the face of Grace's grief and her exhaustive efforts to care for her family.

A search for answers leads Grace and Mike down a twisted path proving no one can escape their roots. But someone might die trying.

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT:

Grace climbed into Mike’s police cruiser and winced at the pain the movement caused to her knee. Mike was busy stowing her bag in the back seat and didn’t notice her discomfort, which was a good thing. He was taking the whole business of her getting hurt a little too personally. Not that his light touches and obvious concern for her welfare weren’t appreciated. They very much were, and that was a problem because he’d made it clear he wasn’t interested in any kind of physical or emotional relationship.

The interior of the cruiser was an excellent reminder Mike’s insistence on seeing her home was professional not personal. He was dedicated to his job, a career cop. She clicked her seatbelt into place, sat back, and waited while he made his way to the driver’s side.

Two years of knowing each other and they’d only been alone together one other time. Shortly after his arrival, they’d both attended a New Year's Eve party and had found themselves along in the kitchen at midnight. They’d kissed, as expected. But their lip lock had gone on to include a bit more tongue than necessary and significantly more groping then required to ring in the New Year. Shored up on yuletide cocktails, she’d let him know she wouldn’t mind continuing things at her place.

Big mistake.

Huge.

His clumsy rejection had stung, almost as much as his continued avoidance. The cruiser shifted as Mike settled into the seat beside her. She sat up straighter. When they didn’t move, she waved her hands in a forward motion. "Anytime you're ready."

"You should press charges against him." His hands curled around the steering wheel.

“Carter?” She dropped her head back against the headrest, wishing she were already home in bed. Or anywhere but trapped in a car with Mike. She let her eyes drift shut. “He apologized. It’s done. Moving on.”

“No, Pearce.”

Her eyes snapped open. “What? No.”

He twisted in his seat. “He assaulted you.”

The atmosphere in the vehicle thinned as his words bit chucks out of the air. Gone was the staid and steady cop, his tone no longer professional. Or neutral.

She didn’t need or want him running interference for her. She’d done a decent enough job of looking after herself for the last seventeen years, after all.
