Hannibal
bit his tongue, almost slicing off the tip, at the thought of her marred beyond
recognition. His tongue—tasting a scream since she’d been captured— stitched
itself back together, but the pain and the perpetual scream seared themselves
into his brain as he ran to the gate at the end of the alley. It was set deep
into the side of a small hill, and it led down to a grotto, connecting the
city’s eastern boundary with the basement of an old papermill. A dank, cool
gust of air billowed from the dark entrance. Hannibal opened the gate with a
sharp creak, and the ivy tendrils entwining the rails were slippery in his
calloused hands, burned by the different chemicals he’d been experimenting
with. He closed the gate.
Glowing
amber in the darkness, his deep brown eyes illuminated his path—a gentle slope
down into a humid cavern. A few rusted-out sconces lined the cement walls
carved into the underbelly of the city, and his shoes slipped in the mud of a
