GENRE: Contemporary Romance

BLURB:

Leigha Luccenzo is a strong, confident woman who has her life perfectly under control. But her nightmares have returned after a long absence. They are kept hidden from everyone. She comes home to find her apartment in shambles, the possible doing of her ex-lover Sydney. Layers of lies start to peel away. Her world begins to shift and unravel.

Dean is a hard edge man who has an appetite for beautiful women, fast bikes, and shattered souls. His secrets bind him, keeping him from any real relationship. They latch onto him from his past like locked chains. He sees behind Leigha’s armor. Convincing her he can help becomes his mission. He hopes she’s strong enough to handle what lies beneath, unlocking his guilt.

Through events out of her control, Leigha’s forced to face her demons.

As other people’s secrets get entangled in her own, she struggles to get to the meaning of her nightmare. Can Dean help her uncover her truth?

EXCERPT TWO:

He said something to Leigha in a language she didn’t understand. His eyes glassed over. “My little angel,” he repeated in English.

Her nerves came undone at the sight before her. Was this the him her father warned her about? She tried to mask her fear. “How can I help you?” Her soft voice didn’t carry far in the empty space.

He stretched out his hand, motioning her to two chairs. “Please, come. Sit down. We have much to talk about. I mean you no harm.”

“Who are you?” The words forced out of her mouth of their own volition. She started to freak out. Her hands shook as she smoothed them over the top of her head.

She had no choice. The option to run left the minute his men locked the door to the studio. Something poked from the back of her brain. His face seemed familiar somehow, but she couldn’t quite place him.

They sat down across from each other in two oversized chairs. He leaned into her space with his forearms on his knees. Caging her in, he demanded her full attention. His eyes had lost their glassiness. He looked at her like a rare piece of artwork, tilting his head to the side.

“I have only ever seen you from a distance. You are even more beautiful up close.” He raised his hand to touch her face but then let it drop.

Jesus, he was a stalker.

GUEST POST:

Evolution of My Writing Habits and How I've Grown Into a Better/More Experienced Writer

I’ve learned a tremendous amount since I first started writing. Because writing is such a creative process it changes and grows over time. There are very few writers who come out of the gate knowing all the elements of excellent writing. There are also very few excellent and gifted writers. For the rest of us, we can be good, working to get better. I’m in the latter category. I always look for ways to improve. One of the things that I have done over the years is rely more on an outline.

An outline can help in a lot of ways from characters development to plot. Finding the right outline format for you is the key to success. There are many out there from Michael Hague to Debra Dixon. Some writers have put together hybrids to fit their needs. Goals of an outline include: staying on tracking with your plot line, character development and arc, pacing, internal and external needs of the characters, black moment(s), antagonist/protagonist, and conflict. Once I have this etched out, I can move more easily through the writing process. I can also see where I have holes or elements that are not working.

Debra Dixon’s Book Goals, Motivation and Conflict is a great place to start or go back to as a refresher. She offers a chart for mapping out internal and external conflict for you characters, ways to heighten conflict, the need for a big black moment, and reading recommendations. Her book always brings everything right back home.

After I read this book, I choose another author’s book and plotted it out according to the goals, motivation, and conflict. I happen to think Erika Kelly is an excellent writer who puts a lot of these structures into your writing. You can pick up any one of her books and map it out. It’s helpful to see how someone else has mapped out their storyline. It really works.

Lastly, there are many online resources that offer ways to connect with other authors, find a critique buddy, and sign up for online courses. Some of these include joining the Romance Writers of America www.rwa.org, www.scribophile.com, and an editing tool such as www.autocrit.com. But whatever you do, don’t stop writing. You can only grow through making mistakes and continuing on.

    1. It took a while to find just the right guy. Once I found him, I found a cover design artist, Louisa Maggio, who understood what I was going for in terms of the right look. I also think I had a little luck on my side ;)
