Wind and solar have increased by 1448 TWh between 2010 and 2018. To replace all fossil electricity generation, we need 11 times that eight-year effort. If the deadline is 2050, this seems possible but would be difficult.
But more obvious, electricity represents only 20 to 25 percent of total primary energy demand. To reduce GHG emissions massively, clean electricity is also needed to replace gas and oil in heating activities, gas in industries, oil in transportation, etc.
In absolute numbers, the need for clean electricity is 38 times the 2010-2018 growth in wind and solar energy.
