Book One

by Isobel Reed

GENRE:   Contemporary Romance

BOOK BLURB:

What happens when the king of casual meets the queen of picking the wrong men?

Lily is running. From a dead-end job, a neurotic mother and all the losers she dared to date. Moving halfway across the world to Bluestone County seemed like a good idea at the time. So did reopening her estranged father’s hardware store. But now she isn’t so sure.

Small town living has its perks though. Wide-open space, clean air, and sexy cowboys. Well, one sexy cowboy. Jake. Who also just so happens to be the new bane of her existence. At least when he’s not talking, she can admire the view.

Jake is the king of casual. The love of his life has always been his ranch, and that was fine with him. He never really saw the point in long-term. But all that changes when a mouthy, blonde sasses him into oblivion. He should have known she’d be trouble as soon as he laid eyes on her. Now it’s too late. She’s all he can think about. All he has to do is convince her that he’s finally the right man.

EXCERPT ONE:

Lily stared at the boarded-up windows and took a deep breath. There was no turning back now. Pulling the keys from her handbag, she unlocked the door and followed the creaking sound of the floorboards into the dimly lit store.

To her surprise the shelves were still stocked and brimming with power tools, each item covered in a layer of dust that had already started to make its way up her nostrils.

“What the hell are you doing here Lily?” she muttered to herself as she ran her fingers across the counter.

To get this place up and running, it was going to be more work than she ever imagined. She just hoped the apartment upstairs was in better condition.

After exploring the shop floor, she went to find out. She followed the beige hallway into the living room, taking a seat on the squeaky leather sofa and looking around. The space was depressing. Habitable but depressing nonetheless.

How could he have lived here for so long, and it still feel so empty?

Furniture was sparse, and other than the chair she sat in, the only other items that remained were a flatscreen TV, a scratched wooden coffee table and a small shelving unit scattered with a few books and a couple of picture frames.

She looked over at the kitchen adjoining the living room and noticed some basic appliances. It felt strange to be in his space. His home. Surrounded by his things. Was there a right way to feel?

GUEST POST:

A Day with Isobel Reed: Behind the Scenes

My day usually begins with my husband’s alarm. Actually, it begins after his alarm has gone off at least five times and I have issued an only sort of kidding threat of bodily harm in between groans. It’s only after my morning shower I look and feel human but not so human that I don’t need coffee, which is my next stop. Once my first hit of caffeine is ingested, I’m ready to start my day.

I’m lucky enough to live in a lovely apartment overlooking the river Thames in London, so I try and take advantage of the view by finishing up my coffee on the balcony. If I’m not ready to leave, then I stay a bit longer and go over my notes from the night before. They are often scribbled in my Notes app on my phone because there isn’t a night that goes by where I don’t have an ingenious idea at stupid o clock in the morning.

I don’t normally jump straight into writing unless my brain feels the need to purge, so my mornings are mostly spent reviewing and editing the previous day’s work. Fresh eyes mean it’s easier to spot mistakes and improve scenes through edits. Once that is done, I set myself a goal for the day. Sometimes that’s a word count and sometimes it’s just finishing off the chapter I’m on. It really depends on whether I know what I want to write next.

As it’s easy to get carried away when I’m in the zone, I make sure I always take a lunch break and get away from my desk or sofa - depending on where I’m working from that day. Sometimes I go for a walk along the river or sometimes I walk into town and go in search of snacks. My stomach decides for me most days.

After lunch, I hunker back down to write. I’d love to say that the next five hours are just me writing non-stop but that’s rarely the case. Some of its writing, some of its research and some of it is just me staring at my laptop questioning my life choices. I just finished writing a scene in a new book which featured a llama (I’ve got your attention now huh?), well, before I wrote that scene I spent a good few hours watching llama videos on YouTube, reading pretty random facts about llamas and then scrolling through news stories about… you’ve guessed it… llamas. I’m not going to sit here complaining about it though, I’m borderline obsessed with llamas now. But you get my drift.

Around 5ish I take a break, it’s usually when my husband has finished work and we start making dinner plans. Normally that involves a quick trip to the shop where I tell him all about my day and possibly llamas and he tells me about his. When we get home, we cook, clean, and then sink into the sofa and watch something on TV.

Later on in the evening I usually pull out my laptop and write some more. If not, my kindle comes out and I read before bed. Either way, sometime in between me switching off my laptop and the next morning, I’m guaranteed to think of something else I want to write and that usually ends up on my phone, ready for the next day.

That’s a day in my life. I try my best to stick to some sort of routine, even when the writer’s block is real. Just opening up my laptop can be the push I need to break my funk. And if my current WIP doesn’t get a workout that day, there’s always the million other ideas I have that I can work on.
