Maz, Origin

by T. L. Ford

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:  Sci-Fi / Science Fiction
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Entering the witness relocation program after lawfully escaping a massive walled-in prison, teenage Merrill tries to fit into our society. Her background and decisions may not let her.

Maz, Origin is a story of growth and love, guilt and innocence, and changing goals. What is morally right and what is legally right? What's legal for humans may not be for aliens...

EXCERPT ONE:

I heard shots being fired from below.  They were aiming at the helicopter or the guy that landed on the scaffolding above me.  The sign offered some level of protection, but they'd move into position directly below shortly.  "It's ok, miss, we'll have you out of here in a jiff.  Are you hurt?"  The man began to wiggle through the bars, which was no small feat because he was wearing some sort of heavy armor.

He reached down toward me, and I hesitated, terrified of grabbing that hand and leaving my life behind.  He clenched his teeth in frustration and urged me, "Come on, miss!  Just take my hand."

Gunfire from below decided for me.  I lifted my good arm, and he latched onto me.  As he jerked me upwards, pain shot through my shoulder and abdomen.  I gave up life and slipped into darkness.

GUEST POST:

Top 10 Ways to Finish What You Started

10.) Pull yourself up and start again when you fall.  There's always something on the journey that demotivates you and stops you.  Sulk, cry, rage, get over it, and get on with your task.

9.) Silence self-flagellation and self-deprecating thoughts. Don't compare yourself to others.  This is the hardest thing in this list - controlling your own thoughts.  It's an acquirable skill, but you may need to actively research, study, and practice it.

8.) Learn what you need to.  Every task has nuances and requires skills.  Buckle down and learn them.  Watch YouTube videos, take classes, and talk with people who know how.

7.) Find a friend to cheer you on.  You want someone who is willing to put up with unfinished work-in-progress-quality things and still loves them and asks for the next installment.

6.) Do a little each day or each chance you get.  Eventually, it must get finished because there will be nothing left to do.

5.) Recognize when you are done.  This goes with the previous item.  Avoid the pitfall of continuous change for the sake of change.

4.) Enjoy and celebrate finishing steps along the way.  Reward yourself.  Allow yourself to be happy.  This teaches you to crave the feeling of success and motivates you to continue.

3.) Exercise, eat your vegetables, and get sleep.  If your body doesn't work, you can't either.

2.) Focus.  How many unfinished stories do I have written?  Many.  I'm still struggling with this one.

1.) Don't think about doing it. Do it.  Thinking about doing something is exhausting and tedious and reminds you that you are not accomplishing your goals and tears you down.  See #9 above.  Once you start doing it, you'll focus on the task, and it becomes easier.  When you finish, do #4.
