GENRE:  Historical Romance (Regency)

BLURB:

Jessamine Goodfellow has spent six Seasons avoiding the parson’s trap, and spinsterhood is finally within her grasp. A brilliant scholar, she longs for adventure and new experiences, things her family frowns upon. Presented with the opportunity to use her puzzle-solving talent on a secret mission for the Foreign Office, Jess eagerly accepts. Even when it means posing as the wife of a scorchingly attractive Scotsman who she must also covertly investigate as a possible double agent.

Lord Dougal MacNair, the new Viscount Fallin, has always completed his assignments for the Foreign Office alone. Now he’s saddled with an overly enthusiastic amateur partner. She possesses a remarkable intellect, but something about her isn’t quite right, and after two failed missions, Dougal is certain someone is working against him. Battling their secret suspicions, Dougal and Jess dive deep into their cover as a married couple, which arouses temptations they find irresistible. Danger is all around them, but it’s their hearts that may be the most imperiled.

EXCERPT TWO:

“Have you ever given up on a cryptogram?”

“No.”

“And I imagine some of them weren’t easy.”

She exhaled. “No, they were not.”

“I assumed as much. I know you, Jess, and you’re tenacious.”

“We haven’t even known each other a fortnight,” she scoffed. “Not officially anyway.”

“What does that mean, ‘officially’?”

She took a generous drink of brandy. “We have met before. Four years ago. I remember it distinctly.”

“Four years ago?” Damn, now he felt terrible. “How can you be sure?”

She gave him a haughty look of certainty that quite frankly pricked his desire. “Because I am. You asked me to dance at the Edgemont Ball.”

He’d danced with her. Four years ago. And never again. Worse, he didn’t remember it. He was an absolute cad. “I should have remembered you. I can’t imagine why I didn’t.” he said softly.

Sentiment, which he preferred to indulge in small, manageable doses, threatened to send him to her chair, to take her hand and beg her forgiveness. A husband would do that. A lover. He was neither and since they were alone, there was no reason to continue the pretense. Only, he was fairly certain he was no longer pretending.

GUEST POST:

My Writing Space

I redid my office last fall when I swapped out carpet for manufactured hardwood floors. With six cats (seven if you include the neighbor cat who is besties with cat #6, who we inherited from another neighbor) and has pretty much chosen us as his family and never goes “home”) who each spend a great deal of time in my office with me, I desperately needed easier to clean/sweep floors! My old furniture was big and while I loved it, the room was just cramped. Furthermore, my husband took over the spare room as his pandemic (and now permanent) office/music room, so I needed to find a new home for all my crafting and scrapbooking supplies (things I rarely have time for, sigh, and—true confession time—honestly don’t enjoy as much as I used too). The result was a new layout with new office furniture. Let’s take a tour!

Here’s my desk, which has never been this clean since. I’m a very organized person, but I need to see things that are important. Resultingly, there are usually a few piles of important things on the sides. The blue lamp next to the far monitor is networked with my writing buddies. We can tap it to change colors and give each other virtual hugs and support. My dear friend Rachel Grant sent them to us for Christmas and I love it so much! The pink kitty in the middle is for holding my computer glasses and was also a Christmas gift from my dear friend J. Kenner.

These are my fancy new bookshelves that I’ve already shuffled! In the upper left are two Welsh dolls that belonged to my Welsh grandmother along with some of my books in English, French, and German. There are also a few things my daughter made for me over the years as well as a picture of my sweet, three-legged kitty, Kira who passed away in 2010. The middle shelf on the left is full of books by my friends as well as gifts from them. Bottom left are research books that I use relatively often. Middle top holds more of my books along with something my son made. Middle shelf is where you’ll find some of my favorite “keeper” books along with my prized Jamie Fraser Funkopop. Bottom middle are pictures of my kids and some cute stuff my kids have given me or made me. Upper right are random books along with an old picture of Mr. Burke and I in college, my beloved Bengal cat Duke who passed away in 2017, and the first book I wrote in sixth grade. Called The Magic Swan, it was, of course, a romance. The middle right shelf holds more of my books along with a gift from a dear writer friend, things my daughter made, and a very cool Rubik’s-type cube a reader made for me. And lastly, that lower right shelf holds some organizational stuff and a cool print on wood that I bought recently. That has since moved to the wall and there’s a new piece of art that I got for Christmas (which I received in February because Mr. Burke hid it too well and forgot about it!).

This is my writing chair where the magic happens! The new office layout of is based on this particular set-up—I have a beautiful view from this chair (stay tuned for that picture!). I usually have a real cat (or cats) on my lap, trying to get on my lap, or sitting on the ottoman. But just in case, I also have my Squishmallow cat Gigi to keep me company. The embroidered fireplace screen on the right was the one thing I bought for my office. My favorite local store often has the coolest antiques, which aren’t normally my thing, but she has a fantastic eye. I just had to have this. I love everything about it. It’s probably late19th or early 20th century from Europe – maybe Germany. The wall behind me is bare, but I already have the artwork for it. Just need to get them all framed!

And here is one of my cats in her usually sleeping spot during the day. Banana is my shadow and the sweetest girl. Behind her is the craft area. I’d hoped the drawers beneath the work table would hold everything, but alas they do not! I need to pare down and maybe get a few projects done. You know, in my spare time. The pretty bottle of gin is a gift for a writer friend!

This is the gorgeous winter view from my office. I get the sunset from probably October to February. It’s quite lovely.

AUTHOR BIO:

Darcy Burke is the USA Today Bestselling Author of sexy, emotional historical and contemporary romance. Darcy wrote her first book at age 11, a happily ever after about a swan addicted to magic and the female swan who loved him, with exceedingly poor illustrations. Click here to Join her Reader Club.

A native Oregonian, Darcy lives on the edge of wine country with her guitar-strumming husband, artist daughter, and imaginative son who will almost certainly out-write her one day (that may be tomorrow).

They’re a crazy cat family with two Bengal cats, a small, fame-seeking cat named after a fruit, an older rescue Maine Coon with attitude to spare, and a collection of neighbor cats who hang out on the deck and occasionally venture inside. You can find Darcy at a winery, in her comfy writing chair, or binge-watching TV with the family.

Her happy places are Disneyland, Labor Day weekend at the Gorge, Denmark, and anywhere in the UK—so long as her family is there too.
