Around that time, I was also having major problems reconciling the God of the Old and the New Testaments. My issue was that I saw people in and around Toronto who looked like the Jesus I encountered in Jamaica, namely the Jewish people. I even lived, worked, and went dancing with some of them. I learned not to mention the name of Jesus in their presence, because they did not believe in Him. How could the whole Bible be taken seriously if the people of the Old Testament did not believe in the New Testament? How could this be? It was too confusing for me. In confusion, I said, “I wash my hands clean of the whole thing.”
I was angry with God for causing all the uncertainty about who Jesus is. I told God I didn’t want anything to do with the Bible, because He couldn’t get things straight. If Jesus is of you, then why or how could you allow His own people to deny Him to this day, while the rest of the world is more or less embracing Him? Even though I was running from God, I knew Jesus was real, but where did I stand among the teachings of learned rabbis and Jewish scholars? I saw them walking to the synagogue early in the morning and on the sabbath. They looked so wise, so knowledgeable, so committed in their holy attire, and I feared I could not attain to such a high standard of knowledge, dedication, and holiness.
Still, I believed I had the right to be angry with God and, in rebellion, to live as I pleased. When asked what my religion was, I responded rather abruptly, “I’m not religious.” After responding like that one day, a still, small voice inside of me said, “That’s right, you are not religious. You seek God and the truth, not religion.”

Beverley was born and raised in the rural parish of Clarendon, Jamaica, where she attended the Content United Brethren Church and its Basic (Kindergarten) school, better known as Sister Betty's school. Growing up, she attended York Town Primary and Denbigh Junior Secondary school, now Denbigh High School. She migrated to Toronto, Canada, as a young adult. A graduate of the University of Toronto and OISE, she is an Elementary teacher by profession, and also a Sunday school teacher. She enjoys reading, writing, travelling and working with children.
