While they’d been talking, Woodson had done his best to keep his eye on Allen and the woman. No easy task, seeing as how the after work crowd was starting to really pour in.
“I was supposed to take Maggie out tonight,” he said. “Got the sitter lined up and everything. You know how difficult it is to get a kid in this day and age who wants to babysit? Especially for what I can afford to pay?”
“You should have married another reporter, Woodson. That way, you both would be so busy you wouldn’t even think of trying to find time to spend together.”
“Maybe so, boss. So what’s this other job you’ve got for me?”
“It’s a death,” his news director said.
“A murder?”
“Not as far as we know. Just a death, though kind of out of the ordinary. Happened last night down in the Zone. We’ve been hearing rumors about the goings on down there, remember? I’d like you to . . .”
“Wait a minute, Barb.”
The atmosphere around the subjects of his surveillance seemed to have changed somewhat. Up to now, they’d been fairly restrained in their body language toward each other, but in the last few seconds that had all gone out the window. The girl had practically slammed herself back in her chair, putting as many inches as she could between herself and the chief.
Even through all the smoke and activity between them, he could see the woman shake her head in a vehement “no.”
“Come on, boss,” he continued. “You really want me to go check out some old wino who keeled over from exposure?”
“The operative word in your statement there was ‘boss.’ How about we remember that for a while?”
“If you say so,” Woodson acquiesced, puzzled because Barb Redland rarely pulled out that particular card with her staff. “But what’s so special about somebody dying down in the Zone? It must happen at least a couple of times a week, if not a day. And that’s just the ones we hear about.”
“True,” she said, “but it seems to be going on a little more frequently lately.”
“Is this that gang stuff you were talking about before? You think some gangbangers are going around offing old guys?”
“I don’t think anything yet,” Redland said. “And the cops sure as hell aren’t talking. That’s why we need to check it out.”
“Okay,” Woodson said, disengaging the call at the same instant that the woman stood up and, just like in the movies, threw the remains of her drink straight into Allen’s face.
Damn, Woodson thought. Maybe it was just a dalliance after all.
That sure seemed like the action of a woman scorned.

A high-school teacher, former college instructor and fiction writer, Kevin R. Doyle is the author of numerous short horror stories. He’s also written three crime thrillers, The Group, When You Have to Go There, and And the Devil Walks Away and one horror novel, The Litter. In the last few years, he’s begun working on the Sam Quinton private eye series, published by Camel Press. The first Quinton book, Squatter’s Rights, was nominated for the 2021 Shamus award for Best First PI Novel. The second book, Heel Turn, was released in March of 2021, while the third in the series, Double Frame, came out in March of 2022.

ReplyDeleteAlly, thanks.To set the record straight, this isn't a new one, but an older one that I'm trying to fan the flames on again. It actually was my third published book, first released back in 2015.
